On this week's episode of Grease the Wheels, we title it after where we were last week, nowhere to be found! Sorry about that, we needed a week to get back to the grind. This brings us to the theme of today's episode, where we go deeper into some of the crazy stuff that is coming down the pike and the relative rate of advancement in the automotive industry over the last 20 years versus the previous 50. A “Nowhere Man” in this case is a technician who's skills and training cannot keep up with the rate of advancement, and are relegated to doing menial work like brakes and tires - and they're going to get paid like it. From rear wheel steering, to all of the firmware going live on Autonomous Driving V, to iMax screens in the back of the 7-Series. Whenever there is a significant skill gap, and the lower skilled technicians keep sopping up all of the gravy, this is automatically going to create tension in the shop. With the growing number of EV's this presents a new problem for “Nowhere Men”, because if you mess it up - you can die! Bottom line, the entire industry is getting more complicated by the day, so we all need to keep our training up and on top of the latest features that are breaking! Also Uncle Jimmy pitches the console Turkish Press and “Operation: EV-Training”This episode is distributed by The Wrenching Network. Whether you're a technician, a mechanic, or someone who just loves the car scene, The Wrenching Network is a place that you have to check out. They have all sorts of great content, gear, and snacks to keep you turning wrenches in whatever capacity you do it. Also if you see us over there, make sure you say hi and leave a comment with what you think about the episode!

As the coronavirus continues to roil its way across the world, causing devastation in its wake, there is no area that is not affected. Football is no different. But to talk about an amorphous entity “Football” is one thing. The reality is quite different. In English football, we like to talk about the football pyramid - a metaphor which conjures up the idea of a communal egalitarianism, a base springing from the grassroots and lofting its way all the way up to the Premier League. With lower league football rocking on its heels, we ask: is there really such a thing as the football pyramid? And what does the top have to do with the bottom? They now explore lesser known New York stories across all boroughs and walks of life. Have you ever wondered why the fruit vendors stay open late or what their business model is? Their Facebook videos cleverly answer these unique New York questions. From growing up in a commuter town to “studying abroad” for college away from New York just to come back to this city, they say there was never a possibility of living anywhere else in their minds. They think a New Yorker badge is eating at more than 10 dollar pizza places. Alex shares his worst apartment horror story complete with pigeon sounds. Brian shares his favorite Calvin and Hobbes quote “there’s never enough time for all the nothing in the world.” This quote has helped him let go of things that don’t matter in his apartment, like his guitar, which he hasn’t touched in years and helped him gain clarity during quarantine on things that matter most.

Episode 171 - Reviews of The Eternaut, Nowhere Men #7, and Amazing Forest #1

The Comics Alternative

This week on The Comics Alternative podcast, Derek and Andy W. get back into the regular swing of things by discussing three recent titles, one book and two single issues. They begin with something that was published late last year, Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López's The Eternaut (Fantagraphics). This is a legendary text, and not just within the realm of comics history. The Eternaut is a post-apocalyptic tale of alien invasion, originally serialized in the Argentinian weekly, Hora Cero Semanal, between 1957 and 1959. It was revised and expanded in 1969 and 1975, respectively, and it's notable for its politically informed subtext. Many have read Oesterheld's text allegorically in light of Argentina's history of dictatorship, its Dirty War, and United States imperialism. Indeed, the writer was “disappeared” in 1977, making The Eternaut even more of a poignant read. Although the collected series, originally titled El Eternauta, has been translated in a variety of different languages, it wasn't until the recent Fantagraphics publication that the book has been available in English. For both Andy and Derek, this is one of the best comics of 2015, and they wanted to start this year by discussing it in depth. Next, the guys turn to a title that had once been thought “disappeared,” Nowhere Men (Image Comics). It's been over two years since we saw the last issue in the series — completing the first narrative arc — so the publication of issue #7, written by Eric Stephenson with art by Dave Taylor, is of particular interest. The two approach Nowhere Men #7 from different perspectives: Derek went back to reread the first six issues, so as to refresh his memory over the storyline, while Andy came to the issue “cold,” having forgotten much of what went on in the first trade. These different reading experiences drew them to the same assessment: readers would do well to go back and revisit the first arc, as this latest issue doesn't provide any context or backstory to reorient its audience. Nonetheless, the guys conclude that it's great to have Nowhere Men back and that it's a series well worth the effort. They then wrap up with Erick Freitas and Ulises Farinas's Amazing Forest #1 (IDW Publishing). This is a new anthology where each of the short stories, all written by Freitas and Farinas, features the work of a different illustrator. Julien Dufour (“Tank”), Matt Rota (“Wolf Mother”), Melody Often (“Ronnie the Robot”), and Yumi Sakugawa (“Bird Watcher”) are the artists in this inaugural issue, and with the exception of Sakugawa, who last year published Ikebana through Retrofit/Big Planet, these are creators with whom the guys are unfamiliar. But all of the stories in Amazing Forest are strong, art as well as narrative, and both Derek and Andy are expecting great things from the title. There need to be more collections like this!

This week’s episode was recorded June 7th, 2015. After a bit of technical difficulty, we have a new episode! This week’s hosts, Mike, Nick, and Paul talk their comic picks–Batman #41 and Injection #2. There’s was some discussion about Transformers vs. GI Joe (again!), but the longer discussion was put off for another day. The New Gloss Over looked over the All-New, All-Different Marvel announcements, Special Edition: NYCC’s ticket sales for NYCC 2015, Nowhere Men returning this Fall, and Daniel Clowes’ “Wilson” being adapted for film. This week’s main topics were on controversy and piracy on sites like Redbubble and others in regards to selling unauthorized prints of comics/covers/etc., and piracy in the comic and music industry. Nick and Paul discussed the new DCYou, and Mike commented a bit. This week’s music was by Poldoore (“Ain’t No Sunshine” and”In Your Head“), Shin-Ski, and Infinity Shred. Have a question? Each of your hosts have 3-minutes to quickly talk about all the other books that don’t fall under their be all and end all Books of the Week for this week. For the first beta test of this segment, some of the books discussed are: All-New X-Factor, Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, D4VE, Hulk, Cleopatra in Space, Black Canary and Zatanna: Bloodspell, Solar: Man of the Atom All-New Ghost Rider, Sinestro and Batman. And then for our regular Book of the Week segment, the gang bring up some fancy comics like: Dakota North, Adventures of Superman #50, Captain Action Cat,  The Adventures of Business Cat, Transformers: Windblade, Superior Spider-Man, Joyners in 3D, Nowhere Men, Batman Eternal and more. For the main part of the show, there’s no specific topic but we have another week of listener questions. Ha cha cha! We’ve been taking the majority of the questions directly from the forum (if you’re not signed up there, you should be!) but we went to Twitter and Facebook and answer as many of the questions you submitted as possible.
