Jay Hunter returns to tackle the looming demise of Hollywood (which he's not particularly fond of), dog UTIs (which he has no control over), and YOUTUBE, a platform he argues is superior to much of what's on TV. In this one we discuss the medical drama series The Resident, the trauma-bonding science fiction film Upstream Color, the polyamory memoir "More," the lesbian romance drama manga How Do We Relationship, the gangster/rich person drama The Gentlemen, the immigrant relationship drama Past Lives, the Meryl Streep romcom It's Complicated, the Spiderman fanfiction comic "Spider-Sense and Sensibility," the "Things We Never Got Over" series, the existential philosophy/multiverse theory film Mr Nobody, and (only as an honorable mention) the sketchy dating romcom No Hard Feelings. The episode outro music is "Sous les draps" by Pierre von Dormael. The whole Mr Nobody soundtrack is pretty baller. So is the movie, except for the part where Jared Leto says "It's Nobody time" and nobodies all over the place. DTG despises genocide and continue to support people fighting all forms of it. In this episode I host a parasite instead of a conventional guest. In the Mexican jungle, deforestation unleashed Leishmania, a parasite vectored by a sandfly, and I am infected. Marked by volcanic lesions on my left cheek and right hand I'm undergoing an impatient transformation(TM), and as I wait for medicine to arrive, I examine my experience through shamanic, ecological, and pragmatic lenses. Relaying the story in classic SPAOP-fashion, I investigate themes of inter-species diplomacy, the thin line between a parasite and a symbiot, between psychedelic ecology and ecodelic psychology, between parasitology and parapsychology, and contemplate the merits of redemption. #174 The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Renfield, Upstream Color This week, we dip into two theatrical releases. The first is The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which proves to be a vanilla-safe children's movie with little interests to adults. On quite the opposite spectrum, Renfield's splatter gore-fest is geared solely for adults. Though Nicholas Cage's Dracula is very entertaining, the film itself lacked imagination and better humor. Lastly, 2023 marks the 10th anniversary of Upstream Color. This indie film broke the limits of visual storytelling while breaking the laws of nature in this quiet thriller. This episode's first two reviews contains no spoilers. Cade and Harrison are joined by artist Spencer Plumlee to discuss two indie science fiction films: Under the Skin (2013) and Upstream Color (2013). Watch the video version at: YouTube.com/@CadeThomas/streams Check out Spencer Plumlee's artwork here: https://www.spencerplumleeart.com/ Double Feature Movie Club is a weekly movie review show with a retro vibe. Two movies. Three people. One rambling conversation. Each film is our first time watching them. We often go off-topic. Under the Skin is a 2013 science fiction film directed by Jonathan Glazer and written by Glazer and Walter Campbell, loosely based on the 2000 novel by Michel Faber. It stars Scarlett Johansson as an otherworldly woman who preys on men in Scotland. Upstream Color is a 2013 American experimental science fiction film written, directed, produced by, and starring Shane Carruth. The film is the second feature directed by Carruth, following his 2004 debut Primer. It stars Amy Seimetz, Carruth, Andrew Sensenig, and Thiago Martins. In the film, the behaviors of two people are unwittingly affected by a complex parasite that has a three-stage life cycle.

The water before you is somehow special... Shane Carouth exploded onto the indie scene with the time-traveling Primer, and then kinda disappeared for a while. He roared back with our movie this week, the mind-bending Upstream Color, which, like his first film, was made on an absolutely tiny, shoe-string budget. Perhaps not the instant classic that Primer is, it nonetheless has a lot to offer. We discuss!
These two sycophants discuss the follow-up to the legendary "Primer". "Upstream Color" was released in 2013. One-man-band Shane Carruth covers all the bases (yet again) with a mind-bending and disturbing take on mind-control, loss of identity, and substance use. Ideas filched from Philip K. Dick made semi-digestible sit well with anyone who's awoken to a life lost to the ether of the sleeping mind.
Director/cinematographer Jay Hunter (AMERICAN AUTO, SUPERSTORE) is back to bend our minds with the mind-bending film UPSTREAM COLOR (2013) directed by Shane Carruth. Yes, that crazy-ass film about pigs, orchids and worms. Go watch it first, then ingest the episode... just be safe whatever else you might be digesting out there.
We kick off a new Movie-Go-Round cycle with Nicole's New to Two pick, Upstream Color. This head-scratcher seems to be about identity, interconnectedness, addiction, memory, trauma bonding, and...pigs? What did Brett and David think? Could any of us make sense of it? How was Amy Seimetz? And why do we have to keep playing the "Can we separate the art from the artist" game? Email the show at hi@mgrpodcast.com. Find us online by heading over to mgrpodcast.com. Two Nerds was contacted by a friend of ours recently who put in some requests for podcat subjects. On the list were some titles we'd already tackled, like Another Earth and Shane Carruth's Primer, and some we hadn't yet, like Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey. This got us thinking about movies which are mindbenders: often high concept, maybe a little arthouse, and definitely out to blow your mind. Science fiction can be especially fruitful for mindbending, as it allows the artist latitude to mess with reality itself, to present extreme circumstances and and mine them for their philosophical possibilities. Rather than retread old ground, we took as our subject two mindbenders we hadn't discussed yet: 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Shane Carruth's second film, Upstream Color. (We also watched 2010, but I wouldn't call that one a mindbender.) We definitely make mention of Aronofsky's The Fountain a bunch, as that's a mindbender both of us keep coming back to (even though objectively it's a pretty infuriating movie?) Either way, prepare to have your mind blown.

In the latest episode of What's Your Limp? Jordan talks with fellow Arlington, TX native, actor/director Frank Mosley.Frank has appeared in cult classics like Upstream Color, Thunder Road and The Ghost Who Walks while also writing, directing and producing several films of his own. He's an incredible artist with an impressive filmography - but an even better person.Frank opens up about his struggle with anxiety, panic attacks and even IBS (which leads to Jordan telling another one of his infamous poop stories). Frank is one of our transparent guests yet and we hope this episode inspires you to be vulnerable as well. Remember, vulnerability is a strength - not a weakness!
Part Drunker: In this episode the Losers discuss our personal picks from 2013, Inside Llewyn Davis, Upstream Color, Before Midnight, Short Term 12 and Locke.
Got inspired to do an entire episode of soundtracks. Mostly horror and sci-fi stuff, there's a pretty good mix of new and old. The bit with Upstream Color & Annihilation is fuckin crazy.

For the past decade, Frank Mosley has been independent cinema's go-to actor. “Upstream Color,” “Thunder Road,” “Some Beasts,” “Chained For Life,” “Freeland,” “The Ghost Who Walks,” are just a few examples of films that benefit from the authenticity, deep-rooted intensity, and “all-in” approach he brings to every performance. His talents extend to the other side of the camera as well. His uncompromising, visionary shorts and features have played around the world, from Slamdance to the Champs-Elysées. In this hour, he informs, inspires, and reflects on this wonderful and insane creative endeavor that he can't stay away from without getting withdrawal symptoms. He talks about his fondness for rehearsal, how directing has helped his acting craft, what he did to give himself a boost when he felt the fire going out, the important power of empathy for the actor, why he's never going to stop creating, and much more! Brian and I saw The Internship this week starring Vince Vaughn and Luke Wilson. It's their first movie together since Wedding Crashers. We also decided to cover a home movie this week because we both saw Upstream Color by Shane Carruth. That led to a talk about sci-fi, Duncan Jones, and a lot more. The Internship The heavy handed Google infomercial Vince Vaughn and Luke Wilson with rhythm Luke Wilson plays Luke Wilson and Vince Vaughn plays Vince Vaughn Michael Cera playing Michael Cera forever Modern Family and how I gave it up The Internship is forgettable and fleeting as opposed to a repeat watch Melissa McCarthy and how she's in the Kevin James role Kevin James and Patton Oswalt's sitcom The PG-13 vs. the Rated R movie Upstream Color and how comfortable it was Comparing it to Terence Malick The tourguide character Shane Carruth's first movie Primer Lack of exposition in the films Learn more about your ad choices. Talkin' UPSTREAM COLOR with Bob Turnbull. He and Ryan also read some listener feedback on documentaries and flip the record over to play the other side.
A slumgullion of science fiction and the divergent spiritual paths of Terrence Malick and Rob Zombie (to say nothing of Ingmar Bergman and Demi Moore) are on Dave and Alonso's menu. Also, Dave was totally super-wrong about Usher not being in "Scary Movie V," so there. Writer/director Shane Carruth talks about writing, directing, and starring in his second feature, "Upstream Color."
This week on the show, Scott and Geoff discuss Shane Carruth's 9-year hiatus as a viable career option, get some thoughts on Upstream Color from Rob Hunter at Sundance and talk to up-and-coming actor Micah Hauptman about his first big break in the movie Parker. Plus, in the main event, short filmmaker Aaron Morgan (No Way Out) and Aint It Cool's Eric "Quint" Vespe stop by to discuss the legacy of two titans of filmmaking, asking the all-too-important question: In 50 years, will Steven Spielberg overtake Alfred Hitchcock as the more popular icon of movies?
