Advent 2023 Day 4 brings us a rare treat. When was the last time you had an imperial red ale? Dragon's Milk Crimson Keep is just that, an 11% abv red ale. We thought Dragon's Milk was just a stout line from New Holland Brewing. This is a strong hoppy red ale somewhat similiar to an American Barleywine. Samppa got a little toasted on this one. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #redale #imperialredale #newhollandbrewing
You might see a peanut butter cup imperial stout on a draft list and think, Wow, that sounds like a unique and special beer, and proceed to order a session IPA. Did you know your session IPA can be considered a specialty beer? Today we talk about the BJCP's style guidelines for specialty beers and experimental beers, and the recommendations for entering them into judging categories if you enter a competition. Tune in to find out why a triple IPA's suggested entry category is the American Barleywine!
Founders Brewing Nemesis is an American Barleywine by style. What's your nemesis? Ours is a Barleywine-style Ale brewed with roasted malts and no shortage of hops for a pleasantly bitter, booming flavor. Pouring with a slight and subtle mahogany hue and a multitude of flavors that will melt on your tongue - this is one nemesis you'll feel good about keeping around. This beer is 11.2% ABV and 75 IBUs. In this beer review, we will take a look at the color, smell, and taste.
Back to work on Dr. Homebrew, as we see two beers today. Well, one beer and one Braggot. The braggot was billed as having a Stout base, but that's not altogether true. The American Barleywine was brewed with Rye as an added ingredient. Was that a good idea? Find out! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Mike and Cal join award winning homebrewer Daren Fearon a few days after he brewed one of the biggest styles homebrewers can try, the American take on Barleywine. By taking all that is good about beer (the malt bite, the hoppy finish, the yeasty esters and a touch of alcohol), pushing everything as high as it will go and with ABVs ranging from 10% all the way up to 15%, this heavyweight style can pack quite the punch. We also talk with Daren about his work with the Reading Amateur Brewers (http://readingamateurbrewers.co.uk/), his approach at the style, his recipe, then try these delicious examples:Brewdog - AB25 https://www.brewdog.com/uk/ Siren Craft - Maiden 2017 - https://www.sirencraftbrew.com/ Tiny Rebel and Siren Craft - Dark Cherry & Chocolate Barley Wine https://www.tinyrebel.co.uk/
It's that time of year, when we head off to HomebrewCon to commune with our fellow homebrewers, and do a live show on the conference floor! Our old pal Geoff is back on, with a Triple he lugged up to Portland for us to try, and soon-to-be-part-time-DRHB-host Brian brought along an American Barleywine for us to consume. The Bay Area has loads of great brewers, and no club represents that better than Club DOZE. A few DOZErs took home awards at the National Homebrew Competition, so we wanted to sit down with them to talk about their beers, their strategies, and hopefully get some recipes. Vito Delucci took Silver in Australian Sparkling Ale, and Sean Monahan won Bronze in American Barleywine - both were in studio for this homebrew-centric show. Plus, Sean brought in a few bottles of his beer to try - pretty cool! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

We switch things up a bit on today's episode of Dr. Homebrew - instead of JP entering a beer for judging, we turn the tables on Brian and Keith and have JP judge both of their beers! Keith brought in an American Barleywine, and Brian brought in his sour project. Any longtime listeners will recall this as the same sour beer project that Brian has been working on for a number of years now, where he pours any and all leftover beer into the carboys. We had a blast and hope you do, too! Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
