This week, the guys discuss Backseat Plastic (punk band from Portland/Vancouver) and Pixels (sci-fi/comedy movie) while enjoying some All Day West Coast IPA from Founders Brewing.
A lapsed Catholic, a lapsed Baptist, and a poet walk into a bar. The punchline: "Catholics are canceling us after this episode." Fear not, my children, since poet Tom Murphy joins us for the first time to discuss award-buzzy Conclave and The Two Popes (2019), and we do our best to keep the blasphemy to the bare minimum. Beers by Brasserie de Chimay (Trappist beer made in a Catholic monastery...come on!!) and Founders Brewing. Find Tom's work at https://tommurphywriter.com/
This week, the guys discuss Pangolin (punk band from Orlando, FL) and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (horror/comedy movie on Max) while enjoying the All Day Variety Pack from Founders Brewing.
Ever wondered what it takes to turn around a failing business and emerge stronger than ever? Aiden's story reveals just that. Despite facing Chapter 11 bankruptcy, personal financial struggles, and uncertainty, Aiden persisted through relentless challenges. By adopting an unwavering mindset, his approach was simple yet effective—pivot when necessary but stay true to your mission. With the help of strategic investors, such as John Green from Founders Brewing, Aiden transformed his struggling company into a global player, and today, his brand is thriving with a dedicated team and significant market presence. His biggest takeaway? Success isn't just about the bottom line—it's about building a company people are proud to work for, one where relationships and growth flourish. In this episode, Aiden shares his toughest moments, from sitting in a freezing cold Airbnb, uncertain about his next move, to securing a game-changing order from China that kept the business alive. He also dives deep into what it means to be an entrepreneur—overcoming failures, dealing with unexpected setbacks (like the Oregon Liquor Control Board), and the real key to success: short-term memory for failures and a long-term focus on growth. His insight? Always keep moving forward, no matter the obstacles. If you're facing uncertainty or wondering if your business will make it, Aiden's story offers both inspiration and practical advice on how to push through the tough times and come out on top. A recruiter, a manufacturing leader, and a technology leader all walk into a bar… and tackle the skills gap problem head-on over some beers! The skills gap has been a hot topic in manufacturing. So, in true Manufacturing Happy Hour style, we sit down with a beer and discuss. Recorded live from Founders Brewery, MI while on tour with SwipeGuide, we sit down with Ann Wyatt of Ann Wyatt Recruiting, Ryan Lillibridge, VP of Mission Design & Automation, and CEO and Founder of SwipeGuide, Willemijn Schneyder.First up, we talk about how the stigma of heading into the trades is thankfully on the decrease. We swap insights on how the idea of "hireability" is changing, and what companies can do to lower the barriers to entry. A common theme throughout is that manufacturing leaders need to be more flexible when it comes to hiring. Do all candidates need a Master's in mechanical engineering? Probably not. For the future of manufacturers, attitude and aptitude are the golden tickets. We rounded out the conversation talking about upskilling and reskilling your workforce. Part of the skills gap problem isn't just about attracting people to manufacturing. It's also about missing a trick with your existing workforce. Sometimes, you need to tap into their knowledge and interests and reskill them for an increasingly tech-heavy future. In this episode, find out:Ann, Ryan, and WIllemijn introduce themselves and their unique perspectives on addressing the skills gapHow the stigma around trade jobs has evolved How the term “hireability” has evolved in today's market from a recruiter's perspective What companies can do to lower the barriers to entry into manufacturing and why recruiters should look at attitude and aptitude, not just experience and formal educationAnn, Ryan, and Willemijn share which job requirements they think are outdated in today's market and the top skills that manufacturing recruiters should look for Why technology is not the solution but a catalyst to empower the workforceHow upskilling and reskilling existing staff could help to ease the burden of the skills gapWhy people are the most valuable asset of a business that leaders should invest more inEnjoying the show? We got some fun beers to try this episode. Malmö Meadery has been producing some really good meads for a few years now. They have been releasing single fruit meads have been pretty good. Martin knows how much Stefan loves guava so of course he brought Exclusive - Guava Mead. Not sure guava needs to be made into a mead but here it is. Founders Brewing has been releasing variants of Backwoods Bastard. French Toast Bastard is a bourbon barrel-aged scotch ale with maple, cinnamon and vanilla. It's a lot of french toast bourbon goodness. #beer #craftbeer #drinks #mead #scotchale #weeheavy #barrelaged

Our first guest, Matt Satten, is no stranger to the popularity of libations-and drew upon the acquired knowledge to form Top Dog Cocktails. The cocktails, Greyhound, Whiskey Lemonade, Blood Orange Margarita, and Peach Mango Iced Tea are all crafted using hard liquor. In a world inundated with hard seltzers, Top Dog Cocktails offers great mixed drinks without the hassle to make it from scratch.Next, we heard from Nery Burgos, Chef and Owner of Breakfast at Blume located in Delaware. Burgos, who graduated with a BA in Business Management, utilized her career to follow through with her life-long passion within the culinary industry. Nery's career path was inspired by one of her high school teachers, which she vowed to follow the three rules he suggested: Have a means to make money, have a passion, and have a hobby. Burgos' focus on three rules lended itself to the success that bloomed Breakfast at Blume.Lastly we spoke with Ash & Pretha Kailath, the owners of Lu & Aug's in Ardmore, PA. They founded their dessert and coffee shop as a family entrepreneurial endeavor--and soon thereafter the magic of combining ice cream with coffee known as an Affogato became one of the most popular menu items for their business. On top of offering inventive (and instagrammable) desserts, they help support local business by including them into their heavenly ice cream creations--see for yourselves as they pile on 4th Street cookie company's brownies, silky-smooth chocolate ice cream (the Chocoholic), or their signature affogato made with OX Coffee Roasters Espresso poured over your ice cream. It's an understatement to say that the political discourse in our country is a mess! And the problem isn't that you just disagree- that you think someone on the other side of the political aisle has the wrong opinion. That's certainly a part of it, but the major political issues of the day that Americans are rightly discussing require patience and a nuanced understanding of different ideas to make progress. Instead, we have anonymous accounts on social media, partisan media, divisive rhetoric from leaders, and the pandemic which further polarized the political divide. All are factors that have contributed to politics being a hot button topic. Similarly, it's not just inflation that's causing everything to feel like it's costing us more money- that our dollars aren't getting us through to the end of the month. Inflation is a major culprit and we'll definitely talk more about that today. But there are some other factors as well and we think by zooming out and looking at the entire picture, that we'll be able to better understand the many different reasons that everything seems to cost us more than it used to. And then we'll share what steps we can begin to immediately implement in order to start defying these higher prices. During this episode we enjoyed a Breakfast Stout by Founders Brewing! And please help us to spread the word by letting friends and family know about How to Money!
