Next month the Craft Brewers Conference and BrewExpo America takes place in Indianapolis. From April 28th to 1st May, America's largest gathering for the beverage alcohol industry will bring together countless figures from across the drinks sectors. And for Ann Obenchain, she lovingly likens it to a 'taproom on steroids'. Because as we all know, such events are the perfect opportunity to learn, and to reconnect. Ann Obenchain is the vice president of marketing and communications for the Brewers Association. Here she develops and leads the strategic direction of the association's marketing and communications activities, and serves as spokesperson with the media for events, including the Great American Beer Festival, Craft Brewers Conference & BrewExpo America, World Beer Cup, and Homebrew Con. In this podcast, we discuss that a time why it is more important than ever to engage with our consumers, our peers and the wider industry. The latest trends taking hold across the USA, why diversification remains key and by taking a little time out of our taprooms, events such as CBC and BrewExpo America represent the perfect opportunity to partake in a taproom environment of a different kind.

Firestone Walker CMO Dustin Hinz and brand director Hannah Barnett explore the marketing approach to the Paso Robles, California-based craft brewery's biggest brand, 805, as well as its portfolio of other brands, including Cali Squeeze, Mind Haze and the F Brand. Hinz and Barnett break down Firestone Walker's Authenticos partnership program and how the black-and-white film work the brand does with its ambassadors plays with wholesalers. Plus, the Brewbound team reviews the latest news, including Iowa's Big Grove Brewery taking a majority stake in non-alcoholic, THC-infused sparkling water brand Climbing Kites and the union strike at Molson Coors' Fort Worth facility. The team also plays Another Round or Tabbing Out on the Brewers Association's decision to pause Homebrew Con and shift activities to the Great American Beer Festival.

We'll do a deep dive into social media to learn about best practices from a leading expert and we'll hear how one nano has approached building an online community. HomeBrewCon steadily marches closer and on this episode we sit down with Jeremy Duffy of Isle Brewers Guild about their unique way of running a brewery - and what we can expect when we (and hopefully you) party with them on the 26th! But before we get there, we check the beer news, a new book that's just been released, Denny's latest mistake (and our disagreement). Sit back and relax - we're on island time! The Brew is Out There! One of our favorite traditions is the HomeBrewCon commemorative beer given to attendees. This year's beer is Wicked Smooth, an Apricot Milkshake IPA. Two big things on today's show as we get ready for HomeBrewCon! The first, we asked you for your Brewday disasters and boy did you deliver. So we're going to run through some of our favorite stories of things gone horribly wrong. And in more positive and hopful news, Drew talks with Richard Smith of Florida Hops, LLC about the challenges of pulling off the improbable - growing hops in the humid heat of Florida. What happens when your pub chain wants a brewery but has no room? You make room! When Brian Herbertson joined the Simmzy's group, that was his challenge. The answer - stick it on the second floor! Together we sit down and discuss just how you put a brewery on the second story, tackling supplying a whole chain with beer from one location and his spin on the summer's new hit style - Brut IPA. We also get some great feedback on Speed Brewing and Drew butchers the Polish language, again. SCIENCE TIME! Sit back and relax, it's getting frosty in here! On this episode of the podcast, we breakdown the results of our Cryo/T-90 experiment. And since the results were so "weird" - we brought in some extra help in the form of some of the IGORs who helped with the podcast including Brad Macleod, Eric Pierce and Miguel Loza Brown. Together we talk what went right (and sometimes what went wrong with the brew days) and what we all thought of the Cryo beers (including some numbers courtesy of White Labs). And then in the lounge, Drew sits down with Joshua M. Bernstein, author of the newly released Homebrew World about the stories you find when you talk to homebrewers around the world. And of course we also cover the whole wide world of beer news, talk about some brewing adventures, answer some questions, drop a little British Museum on you before we get you back to the world. We're still in New Zealand, but this time we're joined by Denny's better half as she walks us through her experience exploring the beers of New Zealand. What stories did she discover about the breweries (and her thought about their IPAs)? And then Denny hits the fields to discover how hop research is carried out in New Zealand! IN the pub, it's all the news fit to drink to, including Denny's anniversary and ABI's impact on homebrewing. In the library we cover some great recipes from Jester King before talking about a new IPA style and why people are confusing it for something Belgian, a little science tease and of course a quick tip and Denny's new cooking obsession. Denny's back from New Zealand and boy, the stories he has to tell! And of course, we're back to our usual format - thank you for sticking with us as we planned our way around absences and April Fool's day. In this episode, we cover a rough few weeks in the beer world and some new guidelines for everyone to argue over, look at some lambic myths, Drew's stupid brew day and Denny's recap of the New Zealand Homebrewer's Conference including their unique competition format before we hit the hop fields to learn some New Zealand hop secrets. All of that plus we answer your questions, hit you with a hot tip and hotter wings too! Episode Links: BrewSwag.com - Use Code "Experimental" and save 7.5% and give 7.5% to our charity fund! It's back - it's science time! But first... we hit the feedback back, talk about some elections and other beer news - including Sierra Nevada's throwback beer move and the new beer style that's got people up in arms. In the library we discuss whether or not Prohibition was a good thing for beer and why American versions of British beers seem to fall short - according to the Brits. In the brewery, Drew discusses a very cool charity he just worked with and YCHops sets the record straight on the hop glut. In the lab, we look at the hot hop topic of BioTransform from the results of our IGORs. In the lounge, we sit down with Brad Ring from BYO to discuss their boot camp format before we close out with the Q's & the A's, quick tip and say goodbye to one of the best actors Denny ever got to work with. UPDATE: Sorry, we had a bad render on our Bob interview. If you download again, you should be able to hear Bob now! We start, as always, with your feedback and recap our successful charity effort, before we head to the Pub, where we reminisce about HomeBrewCon and what we did and enjoyed. We talk about a new seal (no not that one - that's later) and about Russian River's success and planned sale. In the library, Drew takes a little bit of time to talk about Patrick McGovern, the Indiana Jones of Beer, and his latest book, Ancient Brews. In the lab, we break down the results of our UnderPitch experiment - what went right and how Drew sorta, kinda goofed part of the whole thing. (Yeah, he's fired). What does happen when the freshest yeast you can get meets wor in two very different quantities? Then in the Lounge, it's another double dose of interviews - first, live from the Southern California Homebrewers Fest, Drew and Marshall Schott (Brülosophy) interview Joshua Kunkle about his portable pocket randall infuser with a less than work safe name! Then, Denny and Drew sit down with Bob Pease, the CEO of the Brewers Association about the newly introduced "Independent Beer" seal (note - not craft beer seal as Denny states). We skip over questions this week (Hey, Episode 48 is a Q&A - get some questions to us!) We do drop a quick tip and Drew reminds us why movie trailers can remind you of some awesomely non-family friendly music. (Seriously!) Another year, another Conn appearance at the best homebrew party on the planet - HomeBrewCon! Live from the Expo booth of our sponsor BrewCraftUSA, we sit down and visit with a number of folks and vendors you know and talk to them about where they see the homebrew world going.
