Axel Merckx won an Olympic medal and stage at the Giro but he is also the owner and boss of the best development U23 cycling team in the world - Axeon. This episode is for anyone who wants to become a pro cyclist or see inside the best development team in the world.
I could chat with Michael about training and racingfor 4 hours. In the spirit of not taking up his whole day while he's in Girona, Spain, we kept it to 80 minutes. Michael goes in depth on how he approaches his training with a wholistic outlook, while racing some of the biggest pro races in Europe. A truly fascinating conversation with a young ripper with a great attitude and mindset. ATL should be really proud of this one (I know they are!). Hey Airport Ride, we see you! Thanks Michael, best of luck with all that life has in store for you. BIG THINGS no matter where it goes and what you do. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ New to the podcast? Axel Merckx's Hagens Berman Axeon Cycling Team are considered the greatest development team in the world and they've just signed today's guest, the exciting young British talent, Joe Laverick. We had a great catch up with Joe about his career. From a goalkeeper to getting into cycling; his junior career; juggling school work with riding for Maddison Genesis. The amazing Rayner Foundation, his year in France; his winter training; signing for Axeon; his upcoming move to Girona, Spain; what next season might look like; pro cycling and moonlighting as a cycling journalist writing for CyclingTips, The British Continental and Cycling Weekly. We loved catching up with Joe, a top man and we very much look forward to following his progress in 2021 and beyond.

There is a thread that connects no fewer than eleven riders spread across eight teams at this year's Vuelta a España. George Bennett, Neilson Powless, Tao Geoghegan Hart, Nathan Van Hooydonck, Will Barta, Sam Bewley, Lawson Craddock, Logan Owen, Clément Chevrier, Ruben Guerreiro and Ben King all rode for the American development team that's run by Axel Merckx - who, as well as being a former rider, is the son of the cyclist who most agree is the greatest of all time, Eddy. The team started in 2009 and has been variously known as Trek-Livestrong, Bontrager, Bissell, Axeon and Axeon Hagens Berman. Throughout its eleven seasons, the team has kept its focus on developing talent under the watchful eye of the son of Eddy. In this episode we hear from Axel merckx and from some of his alumni: Powless, Hart, Van Hooydonck, Barta, Craddock, Owen and King, who was the first rider ever signed to the team. Axel Merckx’ Hagens Berman Axeon team is arguably the strongest U23 development team in the world and regularly graduates riders into the WorldTour ranks. A couple of the team’s riders, Elite US National Road Champion — Johnny Brown, and reigning U23 US National Cyclocross and Elite US Mountain Bike Short Track Cross Country champion — Christopher Blevins, sat down with us to discuss the challenges of young rider development, sibling rivalry, making team mechanics angry, and even poetry. SRAM PR Specialist, Daniel Slusser spoke to Brown and Blevins at the Axeon team camp in Calabasas, California just prior to the start of the racing season.
In Episode 69 the Warren brothers have lots of races to talk about and top on their list was the recently completed Paris-Roubaix race. Randy and Dean discuss the results from the Tour of the Basque Country and other European races where Americans or American based teams have done well. They also touch on the 303 Project cycling team's success at Boulder-Roubaix and look forward to the next big domestic race, the Tour of the Gila. They mention the Sunny King weekend races as well.
