Since 2009 a group of friends from the UK have been lighting up the Tour de France and other cycling races with their 'Beefeater Bend' - throwing a party for cycling fans along the roadside. They shot to global fame in 2019 when their Links Rechts video from the Alps went viral overnight attracting national and global press attention. They've won the UCI fans award, preformed on stage at the World Championships and even have a kit collaboration with Stolen Goat and their own merchandise range for which they sell to raise money for charity. We caught up with industry insider Troy de Haas. Former Australian athlete Troy moved into cycling from travel when he took up the position of Head of Sport with BMC. Based in Switzerland, he was responsible for looking after their pro team, as well as their mountain bike, triathlon and other athletes and ambassadors. He oversaw tremendous success with BMC with their trade team and across many other channels before securing the relationship with the now NTT Pro Cycling team so BMC remained within the World Tour. He subsequently set up sports agency TdH which has worked across a number of sports, including F1. He is currently working with three world tour teams; NTT Pro Cycling, Israel Start Up Nation and Michelton Scott. He also works with ASO and a number of the sports legends, including George Hincapie and Cadel Evans. Dan Bigham is the founder of trade team Huub Watt Bike and the aero accessory company Watt Shop. He is one of the fastest pursuit and team pursuiters in the world. He was due to be going with his team to Bolivia to take on a number of work records at altitude. A disruptive thinker, utilising his engineering background to re-think the art of time trialling with changes that have spread throughout the cycling world. He also consults with some of the biggest teams - Danish Team Persuit, Canyon Sram, Jumbo Visma and works with the likes of Wout van Aert. As if today's guest isn't enough, we were also joined by YouTube sensation, engineer and self-confessed aero geek Alex Thomas, whose YouTube channel – Peak Torque – is well worth checking out.
How do you introduce Emma Pooley? She has ten Olympic, World and Commonwealth medals, including becoming the World ITT Champion in 2010. She has six World Cup victories and seven Stage Races wins to her name, not to mention multiple tri and duathlon victories. Not bad for someone who considers themselves a runner at heart! She also has a PhD in geotechnical engineering having graduated from the University of Cambridge in 2005 with a first class degree in Engineering; managing her studies alongside her racing. In 2017 Jacob Hennessy burst onto the world cycling scene with a spectacular win at Ghent-Wevelgem (U23).
