Johan Bruyneel and Spencer Martin from the Beyond the Peloton Newsletter break down the UCI's recent controversial decision to ban a key piece of the Specialized time trial helmet's aerodynamic design, as well as announcing a decision to re-examine its own rules, likely it an attempt to roll back the increasingly radical time trial helmet designs cropping up across the top teams. Johan and Spencer attempt to figure out the logic behind the process and speculate if this will deter future sponsor investment/innovation and what the landscape for aero helmets will be when the dust finally settles.

Afterward, they discuss Sunday's epic showdown between Wout van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel, and Tom Pidcock at the Benidorm Cyclocross World Cup in Spain, which produced what will likely be the defining race of the 2023/2024 CX season.
Do they know it's Christmas? Well, no, not at most pro team training camps, where thoughts are a million miles away from brandy cream and mince pies. We sent our intrepid reporter to the Costa Blanca to get the latest from the peloton's stars...Mark Cavendish says he's ready for his final hurrah: Motivated by the desire of his Astana-Qazaqstan to see him race for one more season and also by his competitiveness at this year's Giro d'Italia and Tour de France, the Manx sprinter says he's happy and relaxed as he goes into what is likely to be his final season. He also admits he's humbled at being described as the best sprinter of all time. Lidl-Trek's GC hopes pinned on Tao Geoghegan-Hart: The Briton tells us that he's recovered well from the pelvis fracture that he sustained at the Giro and will go into 2024 with his focus set very squarely on the Tour de France, where his objective is nothing less than the yellow jersey. We also hear from Italian climber Giulio Ciccone, who believes he's got the qualities to challenge for victory in the Giro d'Italia, thanks to his team's increased investment in training preparation and tech. One Cycling's sense of déjà vu: Last week's WorldTour seminar in Lausanne led to further developments in the project to revamp the men's professional scene. We detail the latest, including the rumoured sidelining of Jumbo-Visma boss Richard Plugge, the emergence of a new player at the project's head, and, in another significant shift, reports of contact with the women's side of the sport...This podcast is brought to you with the support of our sponsor, Saddle Skedaddle. Lidl-Trek had a strong 2023 season with Mads Pedersen as the headliner but for the 2024 season the team have brought in reinforcements in the form of Jonathan Milan, Tao Geoghegan Hart and more to make the squad more all-round. Mads Pedersen had plenty of top results and will be looking for monument success and could be the rider to look for as well in the Tour de France. Mattias Skjelmose equally will look to build on his 2023 success where he won the Tour de Suisse and second in Fleche Walloone. In this week's episode of The Cycling Podcast, we take you inside one of the more dramatic and harrowing stories of the 2023 season - a crash that abruptly ended one rider's realistic chance of winning the Giro d'Italia, his season and also his seven-year career with the team that, as a teenager, he had dreamed of one day joining. That rider is Tao Geoghegan Hart - and he is also our guest and Daniel Friebe's conversation partner this week. We hear about the initial trauma of the accident, the ordeal of the days that followed and the slow and sometimes tedious battle to regain fitness. In addition, Tao looks ahead to his new start with Lidl-Trek and nominates some of his heroes and heroines of 2023. The Cycling Podcast is supported by Science in Sport. The Vuelta a España is just around the corner, but before the focus switches to the final Grand Tour of the season there are plenty of other big talking points in the pro peloton. These are RadioCycling's latest headline stories...We start on familiar ground, with a look at the latest developments and rumours involving the Ineos Grenadiers, Soudal-QuickStep and, it almost goes without saying, Remco Evenepoel. What began as a quest by the British team to sign the Belgian team's leader is turning into something quite different and much more substantial. There's talk of a merger of the two squads, a move that could suit the key players on both sides and could, if confirmed, result in two billionaires joining forces in what would be the most super of teams. It's been a bad week for doping cases. On the heels of the Richard Freeman verdict, Belgian cyclo-cross star Toon Aerts has copped a two-year ban after testing positive for Letrozole, a verdict which doesn't bode well for his compatriot Shari Bossuyt, who now appears to be facing the same fate for the same product. Meanwhile, Jumbo-Visma GC prospect Michel Hessman has delivered a positive test for an unknown diuretic. We examine these cases and discuss where they leave the riders involved, their teams and the sport as a whole.Lidl-Trek have been arguably the biggest movers in the transfer market in August, and the raft of talent highlights that they've definitely not been shopping in the cycling equivalent of the middle aisle in your local Lidl. We hear from the team's head of performance, Josu Larrazabal, who reveals the thinking behind the arrival of seven highly experienced racers including GC leader Tao Geoghegan Hart and top sprinter Jonathan Milan, and of the team's hopes of becoming stage racing big-hitters. Finally, our super sleuth, Chris Marshall-Bell, is already thinking eight years down the line, to the 2031 Super Worlds. The UCI has said five countries from three continents are interested, and our journalistic bloodhound believes he's identified three of them, with the ruling body's home country admitting that it's very much in the running. After two weeks of non-stop action, the Glasgow "Super" World Championships closed, as they began, with some stellar performances from some of the sport's biggest stars. As we head off for a super beer and a long lie down, these are RadioCycling's latest headlines...Worlds in motion... UCI president David Lappartient has hailed these Glasgow Worlds as the biggest success in the championships' history, but there are plenty of talking points in what has been an overwhelming (in all senses of the word) fortnight. We reflect on the sheer amount of racing, which has triggered admissions of burn-out among leading racers, as well as the quality of the action, which has been of the highest level right from the off.The "Remco Evenepoel to Ineos" rumours are rumbling on, fuelled by the Belgian's entourage and by a suggestion from multiple Grand Tour winner turned team owner and commentator Alberto Contador that a deal between the Belgian and the British team is "an open secret" within the peloton. Our man with his ear to the Remco rumour mill, Chris Marshall-Bell, picks over the latest reports and explains how bike manufacturer Specialized could be the deciding force in this affair.Tom Pidcock gave up his chance of going for a road race medal in order to focus on mountain biking in Scotland, and achieved his goal by finishing with a gold and bronze medal haul from his two off-road events. Both, though, were tinged with controversy, notably the UCI's late-minute reshaping of the rules regarding grid positions. We examine the issues, including the UCI's fudging of its own regulations. Among the many long-rumoured transfers that have been confirmed since August 1 was Tao Geoghegan Hart's move from Ineos to Lidl-Trek. We hear from Ineos team manager Rod Ellingworth about the Briton's departure from the squad where he's spent his entire career and why there's no hard feelings on either side. Finally, the Super Worlds is over, but there's less than a fortnight to the start of a super mountainous Vuelta a España. Weary Tadej Pogacar has said a firm ‘no' to racing, but plenty of big names will be in Barcelona for the start. We look at their final preparations and pick out the one contender who's made the Vuelta his entire focus this season as our favourite...Support the show

On what was supposed to be a ‘calmer' day at the Giro, there was more drama yet again.
A seemingly boring stage turned into a nightmare for Ineos Grenadiers as most of the team crashed and Tao Geoghegan Hart abandoned the race but in the remainder part of the stage UAE Team Emirates managed to secure the stage win with Pascal Ackermann narrowly beating a rampant Jonathan Milan. Soudal Quickstep also lost four more riders who abandoned and now only down to three.

In this episode of Kilometre 0 from the Giro d'Italia, Daniel Friebe and Lionel Birnie called Tao Geoghegan Hart at his rest day hotel to get his verdict on the opening nine days of the race. A brilliant time trial by Geoghegan Hart and his Ineos Grenadiers teammate Geraint Thomas kept them at the forefront of the pack stacked up behind leader Remco Evenepoel. And then, on Sunday night, Evenepoel announced he'd be leaving the race having contracted Covid, which puts Thomas in the pink jersey and lifts Geoghegan Hart into third place and raises the possibility of him repeating his 2020 Giro win.

Episode 4 went off without hitch, only for race leader Remco Evenepoel to quit the Giro d'Italia with Covid. So here's version two, complete with that disappointing news, as well as a look ahead to week two of the corsa rosa.We get Jayco-Alula team manager Matt White's analysis of what lies ahead in a race that could hardly be any more finely balanced. Plus, there's Tao Geoghegan Hart's analysis of Radio Cycling host Jeremy Whittle's wardrobe, while Peter Cossins suggests that the Giro, so hyped by so many, is actually the least exciting of the Grand Tours Over in Spain, Demi Vollering and Annemiek van Vleuten were at it again, duelling with each other, this time at the Itzulia Women's race in the Basque Country, their contest further racing expectations of what lies in store at the Giro Rosa and Tour de France Femmes. Finally, after weeks of back and forth contact between Radio Cycling newshound Chris Marshall-Bell and both Nairo Quintana's lawyer and his agent, we look at the prospects for the Colombian climber, who's not raced since the painkiller tramadol was found in two of his samples from the Tour de France. The 2023 Giro d'italia is looking to be an epic showdown between the World Champion Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic both bidding to win the Giro for the first time in their careers. However, Ineos Grenadiers are sending a strong lineup to support former champion Tao Geoghegan Hart and also defending champions Bora Hansgrohe will be wanting to do the same as last year this time with Aleksandr Vlasov. But who will be on top and clinch the beautiful infinity trophy?
I've got a cracking episode for you this week, one I've been sitting on for a while and I am so excited to bring it to life. We needed to start at the very beginning with this one, because I know you want to hear as much as I do, the whole Jai Hindley story, and it's such an epic one that you won't want to miss a bit of it. I sat down with Jai earlier this year at TDU, because I just couldn't miss the opportunity to record this episode in person. He's one of the great talents and great personalities of the pro peloton. He's the Aussie kid made good, who grew up only ever wanting to become a pro cyclist. And at just 26 years of age, he has not only realised that dream but he's also already become one of the greatest in our history. He is a true cycling purist, he loves everything about the sport - he loves vintage bikes, he was drawn to the Tour de France as a 6-year-old, there was really nothing else he ever wanted to do - he just loves cycling to the core. And this always comes across when you chat with Jai, his pure love of the sport. He loves the history of the sport and the classic era of cycling, and he was inspired by the Aussies in the European pro peloton in the early 2000s, which I loved chatting with him about. But most of all, he's just a top bloke and his humble and unapologetic nature are a big part of what make him such a great champion. We had an in-depth chat about how he got into cycling (as a 6-year-old no less), and we talked at length about his early time as an amateur racing in Italy. To say he has had an astronomical rise since then is, of course, an understatement. His breakthrough came when he won the Herald Sun Tour, followed by his infamous second spot in the 2020 Giro d'Italia, where he lost the pink to Tao Geoghegan Hart in heartbreaking fashion on the final stage (I'm sure I don't need to remind you of that one). But most notably, last year, he came back to take an incredible Giro d'Italia victory, becoming the first Australian ever to do so, and only the second Australian ever to win a Grand Tour. Of course, I couldn't interview Jai without also touching on the speculation and pressure that will accompany him into the Tour de France, where he's learning to manage the expectations that inevitably now rest on his shoulders. If you don't know Jai too well, you'll love getting to know him in this episode, where he is candid and utterly himself – a trait that cycling fans have come to know and love. I hope you enjoy the listen and getting to know this young Aussie legend as much as I enjoyed recording it! Cheers, Mitch
Johan, Spencer, and JB give a brief overview of Tao Geoghegan Hart's impressive victory at the Tour of the Alps, which comprised five difficult mountain stages through Austria and Northern Italy. They then get into what it all means for the upcoming Giro d'Italia and if Ineos will be able to leverage their depth to mount a series challenge to Primož Roglič and Remco Evenepoel.
Rouleur editor Edward Pickering catches up with photojournalist James Startt to talk about James's experiences at the Vuelta a San Juan and Peter Sagan's retirement announcement. There's also a brief extract of our interview with Tao Geoghegan Hart from the next edition of the magazine, and Dan Cavallari interviews Canyon's design engineer Lukas Birr about the Canyon Ultimate CFR. Red Walters is a cool dude. I noticed him a few years back while reading about U.K. road racing. I've followed Red ever since. When I see Red Walters I see the faces of Maurice Burton, David Clarke to Russell Williams. All black cyclists from the U.K. and extremely talented. Walters earned a bike from his dad with good grades. Two weeks later he did his first race. He was restricted to the small chainring, got lapped twice and finished second to last. All that race did was fuel his fire to improve. In 2018 Walters says he started to see a change in his riding. So, he deferred going to college and focused on cycling. Since he has dual citizenship with Grenada, his mom is from the Caribbean country, he switched over and has been on a terror ever since. He's been the national champion in the road race and time trial in 2022. Walters' first pro team was Vitus Pro Cycling 2019. The next year he raced with the top tier Hagens German Axeon team with the assistance of World Tour rider Tao Geoghegan Hart. In 2022 he switched to Ribble Weldtite Pro Cycling and for 2023 he will ride for Speed United Continental Team out of Belgium.
