DEREK LALONDE HAS BEEN FIRED BY THE DETROIT RED WINGS. So much for the holiday break - tune into this EMERGENCY EPISODE of the Winged Wheel Podcast as we discuss Derek Lalonde and Bob Boughner being relieved of their duties by Steve Yzerman in Hockeytown, and Todd McLellan and Trent Yawney being hired to replace them. We open by discussing Newsy's firing, how the team performed under him, how Dylan Larkin's comments & poor performances by the team (outside of the like of Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, Simon Edvinsson, & Alex DeBrincat) affected his coaching tenure, if he deserved to be fired, & how much of the season was his fault (2:50).  Next, a look at Todd McLellan as a coach, his history with McDavid's Oilers and Kopitar's Kings, what type of system he plays, how much he can get out of the likes of Patrick Kane, J.T. Compher, Andrew Copp, Vladimir Tarasenko, Marco Kasper, Jonatan Berggren, & others, whether Yzerman wanted Jim Montgomery, Gerrard Gallant, or Joel Quenneville, & what can realistically be expected of this season (still tanking for Hagens, Misa, Martone, Schaefer, etc.?) (11:55). After that, what Steve Yzerman has to do next to fix the roster (and when): a trade with the Buffalo Sabres for Dylan Cozens or Bowen Byram? Zegras from the Ducks? (32:40) Finally, Axel Sandin Pellikka kicks off the World Junior Championship by storm with a hat trick, scoring 3 goals and an assist for Team Sweden as the Detroit Red Wings prospect lights it up (as Augustine struggles a bit against Germany) (48:05). So much for holiday cheer... Tune in as we discuss the Detroit Red Wings & their two losses to a fellow bottom-feeder in Lane Hutson's Montreal Canadiens, including Simon Edvinsson being out leaving Moritz Seider and Ben Chiarot to fend for themselves (with Lagesson getting his first game), Talbot & Lyon not saving the day per usual, Patrick Kane, Joe Veleno, Michael Rasmussen, & Tyler Motte contributing, terrible special teams, and an altogether brutal weekend for Derek Lalonde's squad (6:30). After that, a look at where this team is at as we head into our Christmas break, including Dylan Larkin's scoring slump, how the team is performing behind Lucas Raymond, Alex DeBrincat & Co., & whether the tank for Hagens, Schaefer, Martone, Misa, etc. is truly on for Steve Yzerman's Hockeytown team (20:35). Next, a conversation with Bob Kaser, voice of the AHL Grand Rapids Griffins, to talk some positivity: Red Wings pipeline in Sebastian Cossa, Nate Danielson, Maroc Kasper, Jonatan Berggren, Amadeus Lombardi, Wallinder, Carter Mazur, & plenty more (32:20). After that, Red Wings news including John Keating calling it an incredible career, Trey Augustine, Max Plante, Jesse Kiiskinen, and Axel Sandin Pellikka at the World Juniors as well as a conversation about whether Steve Yzerman needs to make a coaching change in Derek Lalonde or a trade with a team like Buffalo (Cozens? We then get into whether this season is a write-off and Steve Yzerman's Hockeytown team is truly in tank mode for Hagens, Schaefer, Martone, Frondell, or Misa, with players like Kane, Compher, Copp, Tarasenko, and others not performing and only the likes of Larkin, Raymond, DeBrincat, Moritz Seider, and Simon Edvinsson carrying the team (20:40). We then discuss how bad the rest of the Atlantic has been including the Buffalo Sabres, Montreal Canadiens, and Ottawa Senators, before discussing whether Sebastian Cossa should get playing time with Alex Lyon and Cam Talbot still out (39:48). Tune in as we start by discussing Detroit's brutal loss to Treovr Zegras and the Anaheim Ducks as they kicked their road trip off in the worst way, including Marco Kasper's 1st career NHL goal, Jonatan Berggren striking again, DeBrincat finding Lucas Raymond to break his slump, Alex Lyon's rough return, Simon Edvinsson leaving with an injury, and Derek Lalonde's squad's ugly loss (4:15). After that, a predictable loss to Cam Talbot's former team in the Los Angeles Kings, including another lopsided affair where only Dylan Larkin's goal could at all spoil the show as Moritz Seider had to contend without his defensive partner (13:40). After that, what Simon Edvinsson being out would mean for Steve Yzerman's Hockeytown team and what the game against San Jose means for them (Hagens? Martone? Misa?) (20:25). Next, we have the big discussion: does Steve Yzerman need to consider firing Derek Lalonde? Jamie Decker, who founded Experience Anatomy in 2016, visited Discovery Place Science in Charlotte to see Body Worlds created by Dr. Gunther von Hagens.  Jamie had an interest in anatomy ahead of the trip, but having the opportunity to experience an extensive exhibition showcasing plastinated human cadavers and specimens stirred something within her she didn't know was there: passion.  In college, Jamie studied Funeral Service and Mortuary Science. At a plastination conference in Toledo, she received a personal invitation from von Hagens to study under his direction at Gubener Plastinate GmbH. She spent the following three years commuting between Germany and the US to complete an intensive internship that developed and refined her self-efficacy as an anatomist and educator, and significantly extended her knowledge of plastination. To this day, Jamie has the distinction of being the only American who has extensively trained under von Hagens' at his plastination company. In 2015 Jamie reengaged with Discovery Place Science to serve as a scientist-in-residence during the six-month run of Body Worlds & The Cycle of Life. Within five months of the exhibition closing, in October 2016 Jamie established Experience Anatomy. Today, Experience Anatomy encompasses a fully-equipped training venue and mobile wet lab, deploys anatomy resources of unrivaled quality worldwide, and engages a team of expert Anatomists and Program Specialists. Serving numerous industries with courses of exceptional standard, Experience Anatomy has the power to revolutionize health and life science education. Hello, dear wild friends! I'm taking a short break, but I wanted to share some of my previous interviews with guests who delve into themes of collapse, the meta-crisis, and the decline of the systems we've always known to grow—like GDP, technology, population, and prosperity. Many of you have joined my book serialization project on Substack, where we're navigating the collapse awareness journey together. These interviews provide valuable context for our journey. You can join us here if you're not already part of the project. I release one chapter of my book at a time, and we discuss its contents in the comments, tackling this big, beautiful, hard thing as a community, step by step. In the meantime, enjoy this wild conversation with Nate Hagens.--Nate Hagens (mindblowing energy futurist) was working on Wall Street when he realised…we don't have enough energy to fund the world's economy! Massive pivot ensued and he is now the global leader in energy systems, director of the Institute for the Study of Energy & Our Future, on the board of the Post Carbon Institute, teaches an honours course, aptly titled Reality 101, at the University of Minnesota, oh and he also advises governments and institutes around the world on the future of energy!Nate and I met at a conference in Stockholm to address these very (meta)modern issues. In this chat we talk about how green growth is not possible, EVs are not the answer, and he makes a numbers-crunched case for how to live once collapse occurs, what he calls the “Great Simplification”. This is a big one. It changes (mostly) everything, including my own ideas about the climate crisis.SHOW NOTESYou can learn more about Nate's work here and listen to his podcast hereI also mention previous episodes with Tyson Yunkaporta, Douglas Rushkoff and Gaya Herrington--If you need to know a bit more about me… head to my "about" pageFor more such conversations subscribe to my Substack newsletter, it's where I interact the most!Get your copy of my book, This One Wild and Precious LifeLet's connect on Instagram and WeAre8 Hosted on Acast. On this special 100th episode, Nate is interviewed by his friend and colleague in the metacrisis space, Kate Raworth. The conversation is a reflection on the past two years of podcasting – and how Nate's worldview has evolved because of it. What fundamental concepts could help us better understand the trends happening around us and the potential futures they point to? With so many moving pieces, how can we begin to create a coherent story of the world around us and - even more difficult - start preparing responses to coming challenges? What should individuals aware of these converging crises be thinking about in order to prepare themselves, their families, and their communities for a materially smaller future? About Nate Hagens Nate Hagens is the Director of The Institute for the Study of Energy & Our Future (ISEOF) an organization focused on educating and preparing society for the coming cultural transition. Allied with leading ecologists, energy experts, politicians and systems thinkers, ISEOF assembles road-maps and off-ramps for how human societies can adapt to lower throughput lifestyles. Nate holds a Masters Degree in Finance with Honors from the University of Chicago and a Ph.D. in Natural Resources from the University of Vermont. He teaches an Honors course, Reality 101, at the University of Minnesota. About Kate Raworth Kate Raworth describes herself as a renegade economist focused on making economics fit for 21st century realities. She is the creator of the Doughnut of social and planetary boundaries, and co-founder of Doughnut Economics Action Lab, based on her best-selling book Doughnut Economics: 7 Ways to Think Like a 21st Century Economist. Kate is a Senior Associate at Oxford University's Environmental Change Institute, where she teaches on the Masters in Environmental Change and Management. She is also Professor of Practice at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences. She is a member of the Club of Rome and currently serves on the World Health Organisation Council on the Economics of Health for All.

Nate Hagens (mindblowing energy futurist) was working on Wall Street when he realised…we don't have enough energy to fund the world's economy! Massive pivot ensued and he is now the global leader in energy systems, director of the Institute for the Study of Energy & Our Future, on the board of the Post Carbon Institute, teaches an honours course, aptly titled Reality 101, at the University of Minnesota, oh and he also advises governments and institutes around the world on the future of energy!Nate and I met recently at a conference in Stockholm to address these very (meta)modern issues. In this chat we talk about how green growth is not possible, EVs are not the answer, and he makes a numbers-crunched case for how to live once collapse occurs, what he calls the “Great Simplification”. This is a big one. It changes (mostly) everything, including my own ideas about the climate crisis.SHOW NOTES Here's the link to vote for Wild in the Podcast Awards. Every once in a while there is a podcast that fundamentally changes the way that I look at the world. This is one of those podcasts. I realized that I was blind to the very currency of life, technology and progress: Energy. And the cold carbon truth is that we are running out of it. What does that mean for us as a global society? Nate Hagens has dedicated his life to studying this dilemma, and he has determined that the most likely outcome is what he calls The Great Simplification. This is no doomsday prophecy. Our advances in technology (and energy consumption) have not made us any happier according to mental health metrics. Why would we think that EVEN MORE technology is going to work? Perhaps a return to simpler practices and local processes will be an unforeseen emotional boon. But there are immense structural challenges that need to be addressed in a timely manner to prevent famine, drought, and poverty. Nate Hagens is the Director of The Institute for the Study of Energy & Our Future, professor, and host of The Great Simplification Podcast. He has spent decades grappling with the great issues of our time, and in this podcast we cover the gamut. Nate synthesizes human behavior, monetary/economic systems, energy, ecology, geopolitics and the environment into a coherent story of humanity's current predicament. This is a challenging reality to face, but face it we must if we're going to continue to live on this planet. This podcast is for the bold, those of us with the courage in our hearts necessary to grapple with the meta-crisis and act in a way to shepherd humanity onto the correct course.
