PREP Athletics Basketball Podcast

Stanford Final Four guard, pro vet, and USA Basketball 3x3 U23 coach Christina Batastini joins Cory to deliver clear, no-nonsense guidance for families navigating prep school basketball. Now the head coach at St. Andrew's School (NEPSAC AAA), Christina breaks down what truly translates to college—defending your position, decision-making, and making teammates better—and why the Ivy League is real Division I basketball. She explains the prep vs AAU recruiting dynamic, the difference between offers and interest, and how the transfer portal has shifted commitment timelines (and why late spring/summer decisions are increasingly normal). You'll also hear how reclassing or a post-grad year can be used strategically—without forcing a path that doesn't fit the student-athlete. If you want practical answers on exposure, academic fit, and the right level (AAA/AA vs A), this conversation keeps the hype out and the player development in.

Send us a textEs wird Herbst... This week, host Richard Graves is joined by Ellie Wilson, a professional footballer who has played for Reading, Bristol City, Sheffield United, Wolves, and most recently Melbourne Victory in Australia's A-League Women. Ellie opens up about her journey through elite football, from being rejected by academies as a young player, to representing England U19s, U20s and U23s, battling an ACL injury, and helping Melbourne Victory break club records this season. This is a powerful conversation for anyone working in or around sports science, performance support, and high-performance teams who wants to understand the real challenges athletes face behind the scenes — and how the right environment can shape success. In this episode, you'll learn: How the infrastructure and support systems in women's football are evolving — and where they still need to catch up. The physical and psychological demands on female athletes during adolescence and how clubs can better support them. How Ellie navigated a 13-month ACL rehab and what it taught her about athlete wellbeing and return-to-play planning. Why preparing for life beyond football is vital, and how her sports science degree and S&C studies helped her do that. What it's like to be part of a team that breaks records but misses out on silverware, and how to process that experience. How penalty shootouts are prepared for and the role of psychology in those high-pressure moments. Practical advice for coaches, practitioners, and parents supporting the next generation of female players. About Ellie Wilson Ellie Wilson is a professional footballer currently playing for Melbourne Victory. She has previously played for Reading, Bristol City, Sheffield United, and Wolves, and has represented England at U19, U20 and U23 levels, playing alongside stars like Leah Williamson and Alessia Russo. Send us a textBalancing on the knife edge between breakthrough performance and burnout, Benjamin Townsend takes us behind the scenes of his remarkable season traversing continents in pursuit of skyrunning glory. From the humid jungles of Malaysia to the technical Alps, his journey reveals the unseen challenges young athletes face when building a global racing career. The conversation opens with Benjamin's qualification for the U23 Skyrunner World Series Final and his rollercoaster experiences competing internationally. After a devastating DNF in Spain where debilitating foot pain left him unable to continue, Benjamin rebounded spectacularly with his first U23 win at Japan's Weta Sky Race - a grueling 16-mile course with over 10,000 feet of vertical gain. The victory marked a pivotal moment, confirming he belongs among the sport's elite. What makes this episode particularly valuable are Benjamin's candid reflections on the physical and logistical challenges of international competition. He details his specialized training approach - using a 40% incline treadmill to develop the power hiking skills Americans often lack compared to Europeans from skiing backgrounds. These insights reveal the technical demands of true skyrunning that casual fans might not appreciate.Perhaps most compelling is Benjamin's vulnerability discussing the fatigue that eventually caught up with him. "I've been pretty much tired since July," he admits, acknowledging the lesson that saying yes to every opportunity has consequences. This hard-earned wisdom shapes his evolving approach to racing strategy and career longevity. The episode peaks with Benjamin's breakthrough at Broken Arrow, where he slashed nearly 20 minutes from his previous time to finish in the top 20. This performance didn't just catch the attention of major brands - it fundamentally shifted his timeline for reaching the sport's pinnacle. "My why hasn't changed," he reflects, "but the when has... it feels a lot closer than before."Whether you're an aspiring mountain athlete or simply fascinated by the mental and physical demands of elite endurance sports, Benjamin's journey offers a rare glimpse into the realities of building an international racing career from the ground up.Follow Benjamin on IG - @benjamin.tsendFollow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

Cam Jones has had a pretty memorable 2025 season, rocketing from Grand Prix wild card to winner of Unbound. And yet, that dramatic turn of events pales in comparison to his 2022 season. For his final year as a U23, Cam planned to race every World Cup in the hope that it might secure him a team for the start of his Elite career. After a promising start to the season, things went downhill fast. Kidney failure, Covid, and a five-day stint in a Belgian detention center followed, and somehow, that barely scratches the surface.Cam joined Payson in the studio in Durango to talk about that unforgettable 2022 season, how he ended up racing gravel in the U.S. after starting a forestry career in New Zealand, and his childhood in Nelson. They also talk about the logistics of traveling to Grand Prix races that American riders don't have to think about, and how he's approaching Leadville after his decisive and unexpected win at Unbound.Instagram: @withpacepodYouTube: Payson McElveen Email: howdy@withpace.cc

We're back with another AFTN Soccer Show packed full of Vancouver Whitecaps, CONCACAF Champions Cup, Major League Soccer, Canadian Premier League, and national team chat and interviews. Vancouver Whitecaps' trip to Mexico City was not a happy one. A heavy 5-0 loss to Cruz Azul in the Champions Cup final saw the 'Caps outclassed and look a shadow of the team that got them to that point. A tough one to take, but it shouldn't fully be allowed to cloud what was a fantastic and galvanising cup run and the season so far. The worry is that there could be some lasting psychological damage in the coming weeks and we hear from head coach Jesper Sorensen about lifting the team up after this and getting back to winning ways. We also look at Michael's experience in CDMX both at the match and in the city, plus the breaking news that the 'Caps didn't come home with a trophy, but they did come home with gastrointestinal illness. We look at what went down, what it means for the game against Seattle at the weekend, and hear from Whitecaps CEO Axel Schuster. We've also got four interviews to bring you this episode as we turn our attention to the international game. With Canada preparing for the Gold Cup later this month, we chat with the man who is, for us, the current number one goalkeeper for the national team, Minnesota United's Dayne St Clair and talk with head coach Jesse Marsch about the development pathway in Canada and the role of League1. Nine Whitecaps are off to represent their country this international window. We talk with one of them, Giuseppe Bovalina, who is off to play for Australia's U23 side, about his move to Vancouver, life in MLS, what he misses about back home, and playing with the Olyroos. Plus we chat with another antipodean, former Whitecap Michael Boxall, about New Zealand's qualification for the World Cup and his international career. All of this plus music-wise, a solo Pete Shelley begins his residency as our Album of the Month, we've a Britpop song from The Bluetones, and Armchair Loyal are back in Wavelength. This week the American Director of Photography and Cinematographer ,Theresa Vitale, whose resume spans all genres of film and TV productions. Theresa is passionate about elevating women both in her love of sport and her dedication to the industry; two paths that have merged as she crossed the bridge from the US U23 National Rugby Team to film and TV production. As we will hear, sport taught her so much that has helped her in her career not least of all the value of team work and collaboration. Theresa was born in 1982 in Wallingford, CT, the eldest of two daughters; she has a sister Rosanne. Shortly after her parents Mario Vitale and Karen Weeks moved to Lawrence, NJ where her father could commute to New York, while her mother was the home care provider. Sports and music dominated her childhood—she played trombone for nine years — and tried every sport she could, eventually, and accidentally, discovering rugby. Her natural talent was soon recognized and within six months she made the squad which was competing for the national championships. Despite coming up short that year she did win the national championship with the US women's U23 national team in 2005.  Alas, her career called and she chose the University of Massachusetts for its BA in Communications degree with a focus on TV/Film, graduating in 2005. An internship with MTV in New York convinced her that she wanted to be a camera operator and from that point on doors opened and led the way to a highly successful career.  Her work has been featured on major broadcast, cable, and streaming networks, including ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, HBO Max, Netflix, Amazon, Hulu, Showtime, Bravo, to name a few, specializing in docu-series, competition reality, cooking shows, studio shows, live music, documentaries, BTS and women's sports. Theresa also takes great pride in helping women find and properly fit personal protective equipment (PPE). As an ambassador for EasyRig, she continues the legacy of her mentor, Cat Cummings, by empowering women with the right gear and ensuring it fits them correctly. Theresa lives in Long Beach California with her wife Heidi and son Barron. Theresa's website: www.TheresaVitale.comIMDB -  https://www.imdb.com/name/nm2922553/Instagram: TheresaVitale21 & TheresaVitale_DP Theresa's favorite female artists: Gretchen WarthenJen MortonMeagan Stockemer Host: Chris StaffordProduced by Hollowell StudiosFollow @theaartpodcast on InstagramThe AART Podcast on YouTubeEmail: theaartpodcast@gmail.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/aart--5814675/support.

Alexey Vermeulen has a lot of thoughts on how US gravel can improve. A 100-mile Unbound. A U23 field. Fewer elite riders in the Grand Prix—the list goes on. Since leaving the WorldTour to join the American off-road scene, Alexey has become one of the most prominent racers in the sport, finishing second overall in the first two years of the Grand Prix and being a leading voice among his peers through a host of media projects. This year, he's started a post-race debrief podcast with Keegan Swenson called The Cooldown.Alexey caught up with Payson in Bentonville after placing second at Rule of Three for a wide-ranging conversation. They talk about the current state of the sport, what professional gravel racers get wrong about their jobs off the bike, and why he thinks beating Keegan is more important than ever this year. They also argue (at length) about tires and debate the best ways to bring younger talent into gravel.Watch episode 2 of Ride With Pace here: https://youtu.be/3rMbJDoCxeQ?si=-gZU8TtFSrBa46PZGet tickets for the premiere of 'Crossing New Zealand' here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/crossing-new-zealand-film-premier-and-social-ride-tickets-1350916600919?aff=oddtdtcreator Instagram: @withpacepodYouTube: Payson McElveen

Brayden Johnson landed his dream situation in 2024  when he signed a contract with a factory team. As a third-year U23 rider, it was a crucial opportunity on his way to the elite field. He had already shown his potential, winning National Champs and podiuming at World Cups. Soon after moving to Italy for the new team, however, Brayden started to notice some red flags. Before the end of the season, he was blacklisted from the team shortly before organization collapsed altogether. This year is his final year as a U23 and he's taking it on as a privateer. He has a lot on the line. The opportunities for U23s to continue racing in the elite field are few and far between, but by accepting the odds and preparing himself for any outcome, Brayden has found the freedom to go all-in. Payson sat down with him in Bentonville this week to talk about the coming season, when he realized that things had gone too far with his previous team, his long-time friendship with Riley Amos, and how he's taking things into his own hands this season. Instagram: @theadventurestacheYouTube: Payson McElveen
