Deep in the Anglotopia archive is what Jonathan calls "the graveyard of my ambitions" — every previous attempt to start training for Hadrian's Wall that never became a trip. The difference now is life stage: what would have been an enormous ask with a young family in his twenties is achievable in his forties with teenagers who can manage without him for two and a half weeks. The trip exists because of a single conversation. About a year ago, Jonathan's wife Jackie told him she could see something was wrong and that he needed to do something about it. What came out of that conversation was a plan: get to England, do something big, and train for it. A year later he's roughly forty pounds lighter, knows he can walk long distances because he has, and says he's been happier this year than he's ever been — before even setting foot on the trail. Two sponsors made it happen. Macs Adventure — a self-guided walking and cycling specialist — planned and booked the entire trip, which is what made it financially possible in the first place. SplashMaps, the fabric map company Jonathan has been a fan of for a decade, came in last May to sponsor the forthcoming ten-episode podcast series, and has commissioned a special Hadrian's Wall map for the Challenge Series in collaboration with Anglotopia. The Macs Adventure app is the centerpiece of the self-guided model. It holds the full itinerary, all hotel and booking details, day-by-day route overviews, downloadable offline GPS mapping, weather, luggage transfer information, and — Jonathan's favorite feature — tips left by other walkers who have done the same stage. Because of it, the treasured Ordnance Survey maps and guidebooks are staying home. Luggage transfer changes everything. Each morning the suitcase goes down to hotel reception by 9am and is moved to the next hotel, meaning Jonathan only carries a day pack with camera, laptop, microphones, water and snacks. This is also why he's traveling carry-on only for the entire two and a half weeks. The route runs Wallsend → Heddon-on-the-Wall → Corbridge → Chollerford → Once Brewed → Gilsland → Haytongate → Carlisle → Bowness-on-Solway, over ten days. Jonathan is walking east to west specifically for the experience of walking out of a city into open countryside — an idea that came directly from the Quintin Lake and Macs Adventure guide episodes. "Day Zero" is the smart move. Rather than face a fifteen-mile first day, Jonathan is arriving in Newcastle a day early, collecting his Hadrian's Wall passport at Segedunum in Wallsend, and walking the first flat five city miles back to his hotel — leaving a more manageable ten miles for day one proper. He notes that even ten miles will be the longest single-day walk of his life. He's borrowing a tradition from the Wainwright Coast to Coast. Walkers there dip their toes in the North Sea at the start and the Irish Sea at the finish. Since the Hadrian's Wall Path doesn't start at the sea, Jonathan is taking the Tyne & Wear Metro out to Tynemouth to dip his toes in the North Sea before beginning — and will do the same at Bowness-on-Solway if the tide is in. There is a great deal of content coming, and almost none of it will be published from the trail. A one-off Macs Adventure episode arrives in September, followed by the ten-part SplashMaps-sponsored series starting in October (after the six-part Jane Austen series in September). In this BizNews interview, Irakli Rekhviashvili sits down with the three people behind FirstRand's R2.5 billion Cape Water Performance-Based Bond, the first time a commercial bank anywhere in the world has tied a bond's payout to nature. The Nature Conservancy's Louise Stafford traces it to 2018, when Cape Town's dams were weeks from "Day Zero" and the catchments were choked with thirsty invasive trees. Her teams have since cleared 40,000 hectares and reclaimed more than 36 billion litres of water. "If we clear that we can reclaim about two months' water supply for Cape Town at a fraction of the cost of grey infrastructure," she says. RMB's Martin Potgieter explains the twist: investors earn a performance-based success payment on top of their coupon, paid only when the trees actually come down and independent verifiers confirm it. The aim, he says, is to "get the investors to start thinking about nature as an asset class," and tellingly, "75% of the outcomes-based funding came from entities that had never before funded nature." Peace Parks Foundation's Colin Porteous frames the deeper problem: "Historically, conservation has been a cash-negative product," and philanthropy alone cannot carry a $700 million, 10-year funding need. Potgieter's parting warning is blunt: ecosystems are "the infrastructure behind the infrastructure," and the money flowing into nature must multiply "by 40, 50, maybe 100 times."

We're joined by former U.S. diplomat Josef Burton to examine modern Pahlavism: an online, diaspora-driven movement built around nostalgia for Iran's deposed Pahlavi dynasty and the imagined restoration of Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi. What was once a marginal exile politics of royalist uncles, former regime officials, and anti–Islamic Republic hawks has, in the past decade, been transformed into a bizarre right-populist scene. It's part monarchist revival, part regime-change lobby, part “Make Iran Great Again” fandom. Josef traces how this movement emerged from the trauma and politics of the Iranian diaspora, then accelerated through Persian-language satellite TV, social media influencers, think tanks, bot campaigns, and the broader ecosystem of neoconservative, Israeli, Gulf State, and MAGA-aligned regime-change politics. Pahlavism presents itself as the authentic voice of Iranians, but often functions more like an astroturfed culture-war identity: anti-regime, pro-Western intervention, aggressively nostalgic for a whitewashed “Iran before the revolution,” and hostile toward Iranian dissidents who favor diplomacy, pluralism, or any future not centered on the Pahlavi name. The movement has started to resemble a QAnon-style political subculture: very online, retribution-focused, conspiratorial, obsessed with hidden agents and imminent deliverance, and convinced that posting, doxxing, street theater, and displays of loyalty are forms of revolutionary action. But unlike QAnon, modern Pahlavism's fantasy of “the storm” has been tied to real intelligence networks, real lobbying money, and real military escalation. When the long-promised war finally arrived and failed to produce a restored monarchy, the movement was left to cope with betrayal, humiliation, factional infighting, and increasingly bizarre displays of royalist devotion.
