First-time sports historians Tom Delise and Jay Seaborg ("Foxy Ned Hanlon: The Baseball Life of a Hall of Fame Manager") join the podcast for a biographical look at one of baseball's most innovative managerial minds - and who just may be related to your humble host! "Foxy" Ned Hanlon was one of the major leagues' earliest tactical visionaries, who recognized the value of speed and strategy in generating runs long before the term “small ball” became popular.  Starting as a fine outfielder, Hanlon played 13 professional seasons with the Cleveland Blues, Detroit Wolverines, the Federal League's one-year Pittsburgh Burghers, Pittsburgh Pirates (neé Alleghenys), and (original American Association-then-National League) Baltimore Orioles - stealing 329 bases after stolen bases were first recorded in 1886.  Despite a modest .260 batting average, Hanlon was renowned for his speed and daring on the bases, as well as his defensive prowess, leading the National League in putouts in 1882 and 1884. Hanlon's managerial career began after participating in A.G. Spalding's “Around The World Baseball Tour” in the winter of 1888.  He became the player-manager of the Pittsburgh Alleghenys in 1889 and supported the short-lived Players' League in 1890, where he posted a .383 on-base percentage.  Returning to the Alleghenys, Hanlon inadvertently contributed to the team's name change to Pirates due to his aggressive player acquisition tactics. In 1892, Hanlon took over the Baltimore Orioles and revolutionized the game with his “Inside Baseball” philosophy.  He emphasized teamwork, speed, and innovative plays like the hit-and-run, sacrifice bunt, and double steal. Hanlon also introduced the "Baltimore Chop" and was among the first to use a platoon system based on pitcher handedness.  Under his leadership, the Orioles transformed from cellar dwellers to dominant forces, capturing five NL pennants from 1894 to 1900. Hanlon's strategic genius earned him accolades from peers and successors. Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack regarded Hanlon as the greatest leader in baseball history, and in 1937, The Sporting News dubbed him “The Father of Modern Baseball.”  Ned Hanlon passed away on April 14, 1937, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1996, cementing his legacy as a pioneer of the sport. + + +   SUPPORT THE SHOW: "Good Seats" Show & Defunct Team Merch:  http://tee.pub/lic/RdiDZzQeHSY Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable     SPONSOR THANKS: Old School Shirts.com (promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Royal Retros (promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2   BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: Foxy Ned Hanlon: The Baseball Life of a Hall of Fame Manager (2024): https://amzn.to/3Vyge6v   FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

2022 March Deep Sessions (2018 Pt.1 Tree of Life Set)  First installment of what will be a long Deep House Series. Our last real Deep House sets are dating from 2017. The main reasons for the hiatus being that to stay within the true colours of the genre, we have to depart from the vocals we love, the progressive sounds we long for and the catchy melodies for which we are suckers for. But then it becomes a Sisyphean task looking at all the Deep tracks we have accumulated in 4 years and just start building a playlist. Opted to simply start from where we left it at,  filter 2018 Deep and solely concentrate on the results. If House is a feeling, Deep House is the essence, the core of that medicine for the Body, the Mind and the Soul. True Deep House is about beats, chords, subtle melodies lines and sometimes dubbed vocals in the background. Deep House gets you there, but it does it by stealth The frequencies are low and do not “occupy” the Mind. At its best Deep House is an immersion and the Mind willingly surrenders. Your head starts bopping, good thoughts take over, yet the brain is fully capable to function not invaded by sounds. A Deep House journey is at the same time warmth, sorrow, cheeky miles and hope. It is healing music! Let's see if we can deliver. Playlist:  2018 Summer in Greece (ZaVen Remix). Kavi Kavini, ZaVen 2018 Inspired (Original Mix) [Qtπ Soft Synth Edit]. EPISODE SUMMARY In the final episode of our Baltimore Orioles trilogy we travel back to the 1890's to discuss the first dynasty in American professional sports: the 1890's Baltimore Orioles. Led by Manager Ned Hanlon, they invented the Baltimore Chop, started the career of the legendary John McGraw, and won three National League pennants. Along the way they were home to such future Hall of Famers as Willie Keeler, Dan Brouthers, and Joe Kelley. This is the furthest back we've traveled on an episode of Hello Old Sports, and we hope you'll join us! Emerging Russian deep house producer Baltimore Chop is back on 5 Mag with an irresistible new mix for our #StayHomeDisco series. First, a correction: I wrote a year ago that despite the name, Baltimore Chop (like most Europeans) had probably never played baseball. He quickly corrected me: he is a huge fan and was even an accomplished player in the Under 16 field, and has the receipts to prove it. Baltimore Chop has released records on a bunch of labels that have been the tip of the spear of the emerging Russian scene, including Sub_Urban, his own PRGVSK as well as Minor Notes and Hustler Trax. His latest cut is You and The Sea, out April 3 on PRGVSK.

2019 Aug Back in the Building (through the Deep Door)   Deep House, suitable for loungin’, eating, reading. I have been told “Deep House” is boring, my answer is right here, just give the music time to get to you. Do not force it.   I recently was eating in an upmarket restaurant in Rome. Setting was uber-cool as expected, food amazing but the soundscape was just passable. As it is the sort of brand of eateries found in most of the cool cities of the world, they can (should) command the perfect soundscape for dining.   The requirements are a great sound system able to project pure sound at a low volume and a crafter who understands that the sound has to adapt to the crowd volume. Late PM, early evening, we want to hear the sound, during full service, we do not, late service we do but at a low yet discernible volume. Finally, whoever puts it together needs to have a script, an intention and obey one simple rule: low, up, peak, low.   Nothing more irritating than background music that is either overpowering out conversations or just as bad, music that we cannot hear due to the background noise and that we would prefer off as it serve no purpose.   Well, here is my take. Use it for whatever purpose you want, this is accompanying music, you can zone out to it but it should/will bring you back in at times and that is the beauty of a soundscape. It is around you not “on” you.   Playlist:   2018 Summer in Greece (ZaVen Remix). Kavi Kavini, ZaVen2018 Tree of Life (Atjazz Remix). Dave Anthony, Eman, Atjazz2015 Take Me Down (Original Mix). Baltimore Chop   Highlights:   “Inspired” by Deep Grounder because it is a deep house classic and magnificently produced. “The Message” for it is says about House and because Yves Muscara is one of the most consummate producer of House music.   This set ought to be taken as a whole, each tune brings something to the party. Give it a go!   A bientôt   Xtian

Career journalist and baseball history author Bill Felber (A Game of Brawl: The Orioles, the Beaneaters, and the Battle for the 1897 Pennant) joins the big show to discuss the most cut-throat pennant race in American baseball history – a multi-level study in contrast that also symbolically set the course of how the modern-day game would ultimately be played. On one side was the original incarnation of the Baltimore Orioles – a charter member of the 1882 American Association who migrated to the National League ten years later (and not genealogically connected to today’s current American League club).  Led by eventual baseball Hall of Famers John McGraw, Wee Willie Keeler, and managerial innovator “Foxy” Ned Hanlon (no relation to your humble host?), the original O’s had a reputation as the dirtiest team in baseball – though many of the tactics they employed (e.g., tight pitching, base-stealing, hit-and-run plays, and precise bunting) were simply edgy approaches to the rules that later became strategic staples of the modern game. On the other, the comparatively saintly Boston Beaneaters – part of the longest lineage in baseball history dating back to the earliest days of the professional game and predecessors of today’s Atlanta Braves – and eight-time National League champs over the course of the late 1800s.  Boasting five of their own Cooperstown enshrinees – pitcher Kid Nichols, outfielders Hugh Duffy and Billy Hamilton, third baseman Jimmy Collins, and manager Franke Selee – the 1897 Beaneaters were the latest installment of a franchise that largely dominated the NL for most of the 1890s. A hotly contested battle throughout the season, the pursuit of the pennant was the most intensely watched team sporting event in the country’s history to that time, right down to the dramatic final week that climaxed with a decisive three-game series.  The effective championship match on the last day of the season saw 30,000+ crazed Boston fans – including a rabid self-appointed supporters group known as the “Royal Rooters” – break down the gates of the 10,000-capacity South End Grounds to watch the Beaneaters grind out a win and bring down baseball’s first and most notorious “evil empire.” PLUS: soap suds on the pitcher’s mound; the Temple Cup; late-Senator Ted Kennedy’s grandfather; the “Baltimore Chop,” and "Nuf Ced" McGreevy! AND, we fire up the old Victrola to hear one of (if not) the earliest known recordings of the Boston “Royal Rooters” de facto fight song, that originated with the Beaneaters during this memorable season!
