The first biography of the revolutionary political prisoner who laid the foundation for contemporary abolitionist struggles and Black anarchism. A Continuous Struggle: The Revolutionary Life of Martin Sostre (AK Press, 2025) is a political biography of one of the most important revolutionary figures of the twentieth century in the United States. Martin Sostre (1923–2015) was a Black Puerto Rican from East Harlem who became a politicized prisoner and jailhouse lawyer, winning cases in the early 1960s that helped secure the constitutional rights of incarcerated people. He opened one of the country's first radical Black bookstores and was scapegoated and framed by police and the FBI following the Buffalo rebellion of 1967. He was sentenced by an all-white jury to thirty-one to forty-one years. Throughout his nine-year imprisonment, Sostre transformed himself and the revolutionary movements he was a part of, eventually identifying as a revolutionary anarchist and laying the foundation for contemporary Black anarchism. During that time, he engaged in principled resistance to strip frisks for which he was beaten eleven times, raising awareness about the routinized sexual assault of imprisoned people. The decade-long Free Martin Sostre movement was one of the greatest and most improbable defense campaign victories of the Black Power era, alongside those to liberate Angela Davis and Huey Newton. Although Sostre receded from public view after his release in 1976, he lived another four decades of committed struggle as a tenant organizer and youth mentor in New York and New Jersey. Throughout his long life, Martin Sostre was a jailhouse lawyer, revolutionary bookseller, yogi, mentor and teacher, anti-rape organizer, housing justice activist, and original political thinker. The variety of strategies he used and terrains on which he struggled emphasize the necessity and possibility of multi-faceted and continuous struggle against all forms of oppression in pursuit of an egalitarian society founded on the principles of “maximum human freedom, spirituality, and love.” Host: Michael Stauch is an associate professor of history at the University of Toledo and the author of Wildcat of the Streets: Detroit in the Age of Community Policing, published by the University of Pennsylvania Press in 2025. In this conversation we talk with Garrett Felber about their latest book A Continuous Struggle: The Revolutionary Life of Martin Sostre.  In discussing this new political biography, we cover Sostre's ideological and political journey, history as a jailhouse lawyer, his forms of organizing practice, and the ways that people supported his campaign for freedom from political imprisonment. We talk about the influence of Great Depression era Harlem, Black and Puerto Rican Nationalism, Marxism-Leninism, national liberation movements, armed struggle, Women's Liberation, and Anarchism on Sostre's political thought and practice. Although much of what we know about Martin Sostre has to do with political letters and writings during the time of his incarceration, Felber also shares insights that few know about Sostre's life, community organizing, and institution building on the outside. Garrett Felber is an educator, writer, and organizer. They are the author of Those Who Know Don't Say: The Nation of Islam, the Black Freedom Movement, and the Carceral State, and coauthor of The Portable Malcolm X Reader, with Manning Marable. Felber is a cofounder of the abolitionist collective Study and Struggle and is currently building a radical mobile library, the Free Society People's Library, in Portland, Oregon. Yesterday we hosted Garrett Felber along with Russell Shoatz III on a livestream where we talked about some of the resonances between Martin Sostre's life, political thought, and approaches to political prisoner defense work and that of Russell “Maroon” Shoatz and we also discussed CURBfest which is expanding to the West Coast for the first time this year.  Tomorrow Thursday the 29th we will host a livestream on Sundiata Jawanza's Freedom Campaign including a quickly approaching parole hearing. We encourage all of you to go to the website and send letters of support for his release. The website says that letters were due on May 19th, but there is still just a little time if you can get a letter in the mail today or at least submit one electronically or contribute to the legal support fund that would be great.  There are a number of other initiatives we want to share related to this episode, the campaign to free the Mississippi 5 which Garrett Felber mentions in this episode and the exoneration effort for Martin Sostre and his codefendant who is still with Geraldine (Robinson) Pointer. Links for that are in the show description. If you like the work that we do, please contribute to our patreon or BuyMeACoffee accounts. These episodes each take hours of preparation, recording time, and production time and listeners like you are the only means of support for that work. Over the last month we've seen a 10% decline in recurring support. We know people are under financial strain right now, but if more of you who listen are able to contribute even a dollar a month it helps make this show possible and sustainable. Thank you for your support! Links:  Martin Sostre and Geraldine (Robinson) Pointer's names should have been cleared after they were framed. This week, we're sharing an interview with Garret Felber, author of the book A Continuous Struggle: The Revolutionary Life of Martin Sostre,  out May 5 from AK Press. Garret speaks about the life of Martin Soster, famed jailhouse lawyer who successfully won cases related to the constitutional rights of prisoners, was politicized in prison by the Nation of Islam in the 1950's, ran radical Afro-centric bookstores in Buffalo NY to radicalize the youth, embracing anarchism during his time imprisoned on a frame up during which he was a celebrated political prisoner resisting cavity searches through the courts, went on to organize after his release for tenants rights and rehabilitating disused buildings for community centers and helping run a childcare. He is in solitary confinement, with only a concrete slab to sleep on. He can make only one phone call per week. A comrade is helping him get onto the “GTL Getting Out” app so that he can communicate with everyone. Meanwhile, he has been on hunger strike since he got there. He lost 17 pounds during the first week. He appeals for maximum publicity and pressure. The phone numbers listed for the prison are: 864-243-4700 and 803-737-1752. Make calls and spread the word. Kevin “Rashid” Johnson, ID number 397279, must be treated humanely, given good medical care and a decent place to sleep and allowed full access to communicate with his lawyers and supporters.

Photographer Christaan Felber has had the opportunity to point his camera at some of the most recognizable faces in the world, creating iconic portraits while working for editorial clients like The New York Times and Rolling Stone, as well as commercial work for companies ranging from Apple to Nike.  But during our conversation we dive into the very personal world of his newest book "Bitter Sweet" and have an honest exploration of some of the ups and downs of Christaan's career and how that culiminated into a deep dive into his own psyche that led to the realization that what others might deem as an "ugly photo" could have something more to say if given the chance.  Throughout Christaan's career he has self pulbished many personal projects, but we talk about the unique aspects of this one and how it came to be, what we can learn from taking time out to appreciate the mundane and even the uncomfortable, how we need make sure we continue to make work for ourselves later into our career, and the advice he gives to others chasing their own creative dreams.   To Learn More About Christaan Felber Visit: https://www.christaanfelber.com And Follow Him On Instagram At: https://www.instagram.com/christaanfelber/ To Buy A Copy of His Book "BitterSweet" Visit: https://christaanfelber.com/shop/bittersweet To Learn More About Visual Revolutionary Visit: https://www.visualrevolutionary.com And Follow On Instagram At: https://www.instagram.com/visualrevolutionary/ And YouTube At: https://www.youtube.com/@visualrevolutionary
