Timothy Zarley has written a wonderful new book, "1901: The War of the Baseball Magnates." (Yelraz Publishing 2024) about the chaotic birth of what we now call baseball's modern era. We talked about some of the franchise movements, contract battles (and lawsuits) with players and the backroom dealings that brought competition to the National League, opened new markets for American's pasttime, and triggered a series of events that led to the first AL/NL World Series in 1903.The episode opens with a tribute to the great Willie Mays and Craig accepts blame for the Aggies' disappointing loss in the College World Series final round. Zarley's interview begins around the 10 minute mark.Timothy Zarley website: https://www.timothyzarley.comErrata: When Mays caught Vic Wertz long fly in the 1954 World Series, Larry Doby was on second base, not third. Doby likely could have scored had he tagged -- but he didn't. First-time sports historians Tom Delise and Jay Seaborg ("Foxy Ned Hanlon: The Baseball Life of a Hall of Fame Manager") join the podcast for a biographical look at one of baseball's most innovative managerial minds - and who just may be related to your humble host! "Foxy" Ned Hanlon was one of the major leagues' earliest tactical visionaries, who recognized the value of speed and strategy in generating runs long before the term “small ball” became popular. Starting as a fine outfielder, Hanlon played 13 professional seasons with the Cleveland Blues, Detroit Wolverines, the Federal League's one-year Pittsburgh Burghers, Pittsburgh Pirates (neé Alleghenys), and (original American Association-then-National League) Baltimore Orioles - stealing 329 bases after stolen bases were first recorded in 1886. Despite a modest .260 batting average, Hanlon was renowned for his speed and daring on the bases, as well as his defensive prowess, leading the National League in putouts in 1882 and 1884. Hanlon's managerial career began after participating in A.G. Spalding's “Around The World Baseball Tour” in the winter of 1888. He became the player-manager of the Pittsburgh Alleghenys in 1889 and supported the short-lived Players' League in 1890, where he posted a .383 on-base percentage. Returning to the Alleghenys, Hanlon inadvertently contributed to the team's name change to Pirates due to his aggressive player acquisition tactics. In 1892, Hanlon took over the Baltimore Orioles and revolutionized the game with his “Inside Baseball” philosophy. He emphasized teamwork, speed, and innovative plays like the hit-and-run, sacrifice bunt, and double steal. Hanlon also introduced the "Baltimore Chop" and was among the first to use a platoon system based on pitcher handedness. Under his leadership, the Orioles transformed from cellar dwellers to dominant forces, capturing five NL pennants from 1894 to 1900. Hanlon's strategic genius earned him accolades from peers and successors. Hall of Fame manager Connie Mack regarded Hanlon as the greatest leader in baseball history, and in 1937, The Sporting News dubbed him “The Father of Modern Baseball.” Ned Hanlon passed away on April 14, 1937, and was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1996, cementing his legacy as a pioneer of the sport. + + + SUPPORT THE SHOW: "Good Seats" Show & Defunct Team Merch: http://tee.pub/lic/RdiDZzQeHSY Buy Us a Coffee: https://ko-fi.com/goodseatsstillavailable SPONSOR THANKS: Old School Shirts.com (promo code: GOODSEATS) https://oldschoolshirts.com/goodseats Royal Retros (promo code: SEATS): https://www.503-sports.com?aff=2 BUY/READ EARLY & OFTEN: Foxy Ned Hanlon: The Baseball Life of a Hall of Fame Manager (2024): https://amzn.to/3Vyge6v FIND & FOLLOW: Website: https://goodseatsstillavailable.com/ X/Twitter: https://twitter.com/GoodSeatsStill Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/goodseatsstillavailable/ Threads: https://www.threads.net/@goodseatsstillavailable Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/GoodSeatsStillAvailable/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@goodseatsstillavailable

Tuesday night's alright for sickos, baby! One of my favorite movies of last year is Emerald Fennell's SALTBURN, a sordid descent into glamorous hell, guided by an ill-placed, unfettered id. When you've got such talents as Barry Keoghan, Jacob Elordi, Rosamund Pike, Archie Madekwe and Richard "I'm an international treasure" E. Grant, how can this fetishization of beauty not elicit something to keep folks talking?Judging from the flurry of thinkpieces and TikTok clips derived from this sucker, the answer seems simple: "It won't, simply can't, be ignored." ------------------------------------------------------------------Follow Daniel on -Twitter: TheMovies_PodBluesky: themovies.bsky.socialInstagram: themoviespod------------------------------------------------------------------Music: "Rosemary" - Deftones "Going to Bed Now" - Modern Baseball "Murder on the Dancefloor" - Sophie Ellis-Bextor --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/themoviespodcast/message

This week's episode begins with Ian telling Steven about his recent experience seeing The Cure in concert. Turns out they are playing a lot of new songs live, and they sound a lot like Disintegration. Steven reveals that Jason Isbell said something similar about his experience seeing The Cure in New Orleans (5:06).Next, they address the most hyped release in the indie world of late, The Sex EP by NYC throwback dance-punk act The Dare (15:39). A lot of people are talking about this four-song release, and a lot of that talk is negative. But for Steven, what's interesting is that a collection of dumb tunes about sex and drugs is being treated as a novelty, when "dumb songs about sex and drugs" sum up a lot of popular music from the past 50 years, from rock to rap to country to basically every other genre. Is there a reaction brewing to the Trump/Covid era of music? From there, Steven and Ian have a wider conversation about indie sleaze and whether it's a real phenomenon or a trumped-up fantasy by shadowy "Brooklyn-based trend forecasters" (32:29). Speaking of fantasies, the guys also addressed reunion rumors surrounding two very different bands: Oasis and Modern Baseball (44:55).In Recommendation Corner (50:42), Ian talks about two electronic acts, Blawan and Overmono, while Steven brings up the catchy French indie pop En Attendant Ana.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. August 2, 1921. Hundreds wait inside a Chicago courthouse for the verdict. Seven Chicago White Sox players are accused of intentionally throwing the World Series, losing on purpose to collect a payout. For decades, gambling has been a part of America's pastime, but this fix is too big to ignore. The nation feels betrayed, yet is transfixed by the scandal, spending months following the whirlwind case. Today, the 1919 Chicago Black Sox scandal comes to a head. How do these baseball players conspire to intentionally lose the World Series? And will their punishment be enough to root out gambling in the sport forever? Special thanks to Charles Fountain, author of The Betrayal: The 1919 World Series and the Birth of Modern Baseball, and Jacob Pomrenke, Director of Editorial Content for the Society of American Baseball Research. On today's episode, we hop on to Locked On Diamondbacks to talk with Millard Thomas about their MLB Draft. Druw Jones, a generational talent and consensus #1 player in the draft, fell to #2 after the Baltimore Orioles drafted SS Jackson Holliday - why? With Holliday and Jones going 1 & 2 and several other 2nd generation talents being drafted high, is this a trend that we expect to increase? And once Jones & Corbin Carroll join Alek Thomas in Arizona, who plays where?Find and follow LockedOn MLB Prospects on your favorite podcast platforms:Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/locked-on-mlb-prospects/id1525225214Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/2wzJIf26tGgVbB7rsoKyLDStitcher: https://www.stitcher.com/show/locked-on-mlb-prospectsFollow along with LockedOn MLB Prospects host Lindsay Crosby as we follow 120+ affiliated teams throughout the 2022 season! Play ball! In the latest episode of Columbia House Party, hosts Jake Goldsbie and Blake Murphy are jointed by Jonah Birenbaum (@birenball) to discuss Modern Baseball's debut album, Sports. A little too on the nose to have a sad baseball writer discuss an emo band called Modern Baseball? We don't think so. Find out more about why neither the hosts nor guest can remember much from their formative MoBo concert experiences, why the band's lyrics resonated so well with the guys in their early-20s, and whether Blake tells Jake that The Region qualifies as "a town that said reckon all the time" on this week's podcast.Come join the Patreon family for bonus episodes, mailbags, show notes and even more goodness: https://www.patreon.com/columbiahouseparty Follow @ColumbiaHP on Twitter!
