Today is one of those best-laid-plans scenarios, apparently. If you scroll down a bit to play today’s Austin Music Minute, you’ll hear all about Big Bill‘s release show for Public Freakout Compilation, originally set for tonight at Hotel Vegas. Calliope Musicals and BÖNDBREAKR made it the perfect line-up. Then, stupid COVID threw Big Bill a […]
Here's a conversation with the lead singer and guitarist of Calliope Musicals, Carrie Fussell. We go into songwriting, how the band formed and evolved, and more about the magic of the UTOPiAfest and its profound impact on her and other musicians who attend the festival. Carrie categorizes the band's sound like a wholesome psychedelic exploration of feelings through music. Welcome to another magical and simultaneously badass Friday night at Cheer Up Charlie’s on Red River. Check this line-up: The vibrant colors, the glorious din, the dazzling trash glam, and the euphoria! True, you might be tripping, but it could very well may be the melodic chaos of Calliope Musicals. It's pretty common in our collective rear view to gaze upon the halcyon days of early March 2020 and chuckle about our earnest belief that this COVID thing? We'll be past it in a couple of weeks.Of course now, in a story that's been beaten into a fine mist, we know the pandemic had other plans. It is with tongue planted firmly in cheek that I suggest that this development did manage to affect the pursuit of podcasting. At least it did ours.We really like to sit down in person as we can—it just makes for a livelier show—and talk music. So we waited. In the time since, Shane's gone back into the studio, so when we did decide to reconvene, Kevin, Ryan & Mark connect for this episode. We offer you the SLI pandemic recap mixtape, where we consider the tracks we've met since we've not been meeting. From the forlorn to the fanciful, it's a grab bag of what's kept us company throughout as the months piled up.Like the needle dropped in the groove, you've got to start somewhere - Recorded in October of 2021. For the past few weeks (and perhaps beyond), you’ve been hearing a lot about our April 2021 Artist of the Month, Calliope Musicals. This fantastical Austin four-piece has been inching their performative alt-pop eccentricities nearer to insanity with each escalating endeavor, chiefly spearheaded by Calliope’s fearless frontwoman, Carrie Fussell. Carrie and Calliope recently hosted their My KUTX session in […]
This episode features Calliope Musicals front-woman and founder, Carrie Fussell. Hustling since 2009, the band decided to take a break from touring towards the end of 2019 heading into 2020... we all know what happened then. Their brief hiatus was forced into an indefinite one due to the pandemic that has sidelined live music across the nation. In the meantime, they've been working on a new record and Carrie, herself, has helped with the program "Free Lunch" in Austin, TX to help feed the un-housed community. It was a true joy speaking with her.Calliope Musicals BandcampCalliope Musicals WebsiteNEW SINGLE!FREE LUNCH - Become a Lunch Monitor today and provide 3 healthy meals to those in need with just $10 a month.
Forget a buildup. The explosion is immediate. And you’ll see colors blazing before your wide eyes that you didn’t even dream existed. That’s one of a myriad of ways to describe the musical experience of Calliope Musicals. The Austin-based psych-pop outfit has a reputation for these jaw-droppingly high-energy extravaganzas that could have been dreamt up […]
Welcome to Episode 002 of the Glitter and Sage podcast! I am so excited to share this episode, as it is the first interview I recorded for the podcast, and it is an interview with one of my favorite bands, Calliope Musicals, that we recorded sitting in a big circle with the whole band and some of my friends, on the floor of the venue Pianos in NYC right after they played a really fun show! ARTIST BIO “Calliope Musicals exist in multiple mind-bending dimensions. The larger-than-life psychedelic pop collective, led by Carrie Fussell, wows concert-goers with a blast of interactive secondhand glam and woos music listeners alike with invigorating avant-garde anthems. Standouts amongst their Austin, TX peers, Calliope Musicals were hailed by NPR as a “perennial SXSW favorite”. As Fussell sums up the group: “We came from space. We're all going to die”. Calliope Musicals' latest EP, Between Us, is slated to release on April 23, 2021 via Spaceflight Records.” In this episode: INTRO -I share about my amazing experience of interviewing Calliope Musicals. -I give an update on the band since we recorded the interview, including giving their new song “Can You Tell Me” a shout, as well as congratulating the band for their song “That's Why We Dance” being featured in the #1 Netflix show Ginny and Georgia last week! INTERVIEW -I fangirl a bit and share about how I found their music. -The band shares about some of their magical moments playing shows from basements, to music festivals. -They invite me to come to their next show after NYC in Canada to dress up in a polar bear costume and dance; including this in the show notes because although I couldn't take off my seasonal job at the time to go to that show, if that offer is still on the table, I will totally take a rain check! -We talk about their new album Color/Sweat and Carrie's dream one night that inspired the title track's name. -Carrie leads us all through their pre-show ritual! I invite you to breathe along with us! -We have some whiskey, we have some laughs, we have a great time; these guys are the coolest!
