A harpist since childhood–as well as the daughter of one–Mary Lattimore’s choice of instrument reveals the simple beauty it contains, transcending the stereotype of it being strictly for use in classical music or as flourishes in movie soundtracks. Her ability to cut straight to the heart in her compositions works the same trick, not relying on the standard glissandos often employed by traditional players, but simply reducing the instrument to its essence. Her most recent release is a duet with Julianna Barwick, Tragic Magic, and came out in January of 2026. The duo will perform at this year’s Big Ears Festival in Knoxville in March of 2026. Hear how songs by Debussy, The Cure, and Sonic Youth guided her musical path.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Buck Meek is here for a talk about his charming, confessional new album, The Mirror, coming up in Wimberley, Texas and people's misconceptions of the Lone Star State, the vibrancy of transient college towns, how his grandmother's death and caring for his grandfather galvanized his family and inspired aspects of The Mirror, writing songs about communication, teaching, language, speech, parenting, and family, pondering duality, mid-life, and overcoming societal inhibitions, a unique recording studio set-up, ambience and intuitive expression, being a participant in Bob Dylan's Shadow Kingdom film and recording project, upcoming solo and Big Thief tour dates, other future plans, and much more.EVERY OTHER COMPLETE KREATIVE KONTROL EPISODE IS ONLY ACCESSIBLE TO PATREON SUPPORTERS STARTING AT $6/MONTH. Da sind wir wieder! Hurra!
Mary Lattimore left a voicemail about her fantastic new LP with Julianna Barwick "Tragic Magic" recorded with rare instruments from the Musée de la Musique at the Philharmonie de Paris. Plus we'll spin new indie pop from Heavenly, local Valentines sounds from The Corsican, and our fave ever track from Rufus Wainwright
On today's episode, I talk to harpist Mary Lattimore. Originally from Asheville, North Carolina, Mary began playing the harp as a tween and eventually attended the Eastman School of Music to study it more seriously. In 2012, Mary released her first album, a self-titled cassette, on Fred Thomas' Life Like imprint. This was re-released a year later on Desire Path Recordings with a new title, The Withdrawing Room. Since then, she's released almost a dozen more albums and collaborations on labels like Ghostly International, Three Lobed and Thrill Jockey, and her latest, Tragic Magic, an album she made with Julianna Barwick, was just released in the middle of January, and it's fantastic! Peter plays guitars, bass, keyboards, and mandolin, and Wolfgang provides the drums for the tracks. Ethereal Dialogue by Jason Blake favorite track Pluvial Thoughts Chicagoan Jason Blake plays Warr guitar, often in a more progressive rock style rather than this atmospheric outing. He combines looping and various echo effects into resplendent meditations Ni blomster i en åker by Ævestaden favorite track Jag vill ut och du vill ner i jorden This Norwegian trio of multi-instrumentalists play fiddle, jaw harp, lyres, kantele, cow horn, and electronics. They expertly blend vocal harmonies into a rich pastiche which harkens to ancient Nordic traditions. Desert Electric by Rubi Ate the Fig favorite track Gilgamesh Based out of New Mexico, the core band is led by composter Sharon Eliashar on vocals and guitar, members add qanun, drums and other percussion, guitars, keyboards, bass, saz, cello, and buzuq. Guest musicians play ney, Arabic strings, additional percussion, duduk, oud, zourna, farfisa organ, additional backing vocals, a string quartet, and probably there's a kitchen sink in there, too. The music is a heady amalgamation of rock and psych, blended with Middle Eastern traditions. Tragic Magic by Julianna Barwick & Mary Lattimore favorite track Perpetual Adoration Here is a collaboration of vocalist and electronica composer Julianna Barwick and harpist Mary Lattimore. Recorded at the Philharmonie de Paris, they utilized the Musée de la Musique's instrument collection, which included ancient harps and analog synths. Together they have created a bewitching musical spell. Lemon Crash – 25th Anniversary Edition by Europa String Choir favorite track Waterfall around for just a little while. This is a release with the pieces being reworked with modern equipment for superior sound. Instruments are 6-string violectra, guitars, and 8-string touch guitar, producing a heady blend of acoustic and electric music. Echoe’s End by Tyler Kamen favorite track Spirit Box, Pt. 2 – The Dream New York psych/folk/blues-tinged multi-instrumentalist and composer Tyler Kamen returns with this lovely, layered, lysergic plunge deep into the otherworld. There is no mistaking his signature sound for anyone else, yet each release is not merely delving into the same territory as the ones before. Dreamy and phantasmagoric. Sound Ceremony (Live in Zurich, Spring 2024) by Estas Tonne feat. Ali Ghamsari, Sylvia Kirchherr, Ben Aylon, Yonatan Bar Rashi favorite track Wheel of Life-The Insight This superb guitarist and composer is joined live with guests on Iranian tar, various percussion instruments and vocalists. He has indeed created somewhat of a ceremonial atmosphere for this show, with several extended pieces, which are stunning. For brevity's sake, I am choosing Wheel of Life – The Insight, which reflects most of what you will find here. Nature Reversed by Ashley Reaks favorite track Deep Inside Our Silent Sorrow Ashley Reaks has issued another fine release, which sounds unmistakenly like him, and no one else. These songs are all inspired by the Yorkshire Dales, but don't expect them to be cheerily bucolic because of that. These are dark dales, where the wanderer is struggling with angst and faces his own inner familial demons. He eventually succeeds, finding a sort of peace after he has faced them and the storms have passed. FAUN “Drei Tage” Single 2026 FAUN return with their superb amalgamation of traditional and modern instrumentation that places them squarely at the leading edge of the dark/pagan/medieval folk pack. Drei Tage features dulcet vocals and lush orchestration, it's full of mystery and Nordic darkness.

In this episode, Abby interviews harpist and composer Mary Lattimore about her most recent album Goodbye, Hotel Arkada, her musical collaborations, and her instrument in all its epic visceral and metaphorical power. Together, they present “The Pity of Love” by William Butler Yeats.Recitation begins at 34:38The Pity of LoveWilliam Butler YeatsA pity beyond all tellingIs hid in the heart of love:The folk who are buying and selling,The clouds on their journey above,The cold wet winds ever blowing,And the shadowy hazel grove Where mouse-grey waters are flowing,Threaten the head that I love.
Welcome back to Transmissions, your weekly conversational series from Aquarium Drunkard in partnership with the Talkhouse Podcast Network. This week on the show, a long awaited return visit from Lonnie Holley. The Atlanta artist joins us alongside his manager, Matt Arnett, son of William Arnett, the Southern art curator and collector who brought Holley to the attention of the art world in the 1980s. In those days, Holley often worked directly with trash—taking discarded materials to forge his sculptures. Philip K. Dick has said “the symbols of the divine show up in our world initially at the trash stratum,” and in Lonnie's case, that truth is made evident. His art draws from what's thrown out—a theme he returns to often—but also from personal tragedy: first artistic project was carving headstones for his sister's two children, who died in a house fire in Alabama in 1979. Since then, his found-object assemblages, paintings, and collages have endeared him to the fine art world—they have even been displayed in the Smithsonian and the White House—in part due to the patronage and care of Arnett's father. But the younger Arnett helped Holley get on the path he walks know, as an oracular sculpture of sound. Lonnie and Matt join us ahead of the March 21st release of Holley's new album, Tonky. Crafted with Irish producer Jacknife Lee (R.E.M., U2, The Killers) and featuring guests like Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse, harpist Mary Lattimore, rappers Billy Woods and Open Mike Eagle, spoken word from Saul Williams, and others, Tonky rattles with blues-punk-industrial art folk anthems. We discussed the new album, Holley's poetic metaphysics, and his work with kindred spirit Richard Swift. You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. durée : 00:59:24 - Banzzaï du jeudi 13 février 2025 - par : Nathalie Piolé - Soyons jeunes, soyons insouciants, et profitons de nos vingt ans !.
Working with artists such as composer, Owen Pallet, harpist, Mary Lattimore, pianist Kelly Moran and nature recorder, Chris Watson, Christopher Weingarten is exploring the market for "artisanal" white noise with his Fuzzzel app.
What do you do to feel most connected with God? One way that many of us grew up with is the idea of 'quiet time' where you physically sit still and quiet. While there is still value in this practice (just ask friend of the show Strahan Coleman), this is something that many struggled with growing up and, in actual fact, there are many ways to connect with God. Join Petra Bagust in this special episode recorded live in the Coromadel at the Love It Media staff retreat. Petra first talks to senior producer, Josh Couch, who breaks down the nine different paths of connection as identified by Gary Thomas in his book Sacred Pathways. After some time to think, Petra then hears from different members of the Love It Media staff team, who offer a mix of funny and poignant stories about the different ways they feel connected to God. To wrap it all up, Sunday Sanctuary's very own Rev Frank Ritchie leads communion (which you're welcome to join in with from home) and Petra finishes off with another benediction from Kate Bowler and Jessica Ritchie. Join us! Sacred Texts: Sacred Pathways by Gary Thomas C. S. Lewis quote from his book Miracles Music: Pine Trees by Mary Lattimore (played at end of Josh's interview) Make that Connection by Tom Petty Frolic by Jake Xerxes Fussell (played during the time for contemplation) Blue in Green by Miles Davis (played during communion) Collect for Midday by The Fuzzy Robes Summer's End by Julie Byrne (played to end the episode)
Plus: “It's such a universal instrument.” Filmmaker Theo Schear and world-renowned harpist Mary Lattimore pull some strings to create a harp emoji. Also: A Sudanese-Canadian man says his sister died waiting for approval to come to Canada; TikToker Talia Cadet tells us what's at stake for creators like her as a U.S. court considers the country's proposed ban on the Chinese-owned platform; and a new type of parasitoid wasp burrows inside fruit fly abdomens to lay its eggs.
At the wonderful End of the Road festival in Dorset, we hear from harpist Mary Lattimore and nature rockers Gently Tender. Films reference by Mary include Good One, Janet Planet and Unarius. Join SON Estrella Galicia on 12 September at Paper Dress Vintage in Hackney, witth Coach Party and The New Eves playing - plus a clothing repair workshop, Soundcrafters interactive workshop and beer pouring. Another week, another solo show. Do the presenters even like each other? Will they ever present a show together again? Is the show better when it's only one of them in the studio? So many questions, so many answers we may never find out. This week, Steve was flying solo. So he was playing stuff he liked. As you can guess, there was some OSEES and some Mary Lattimore. The other stuff is also good. Hopefully you'll enjoy it.In theory, we'll both be back in the studio on Sunday with tales from Wilderness, Wales and more!Remember, you can join us live (almost) every Sunday 9pm-11pm on SheffieldLive! 93.2fm, via the TuneIn Radio App or www.sheffieldlive.orgGet in touch with requests, recommendations and guest mix inquiries!https://www.instagram.com/radionighttrain/https://bsky.app/profile/thenighttrain.co.ukWe're also available for family functions, weddings, funerals, boat launches and more.SHOWNOTESOseesGZA, RZA and Bill Murray : Coffee & Cigarettes...3024 with MARTYN and OM UNIT @TheLotRadio 12-02-2023Percy Digs (@percydigs) on Instagram#62 David Axelrod Tribute Show (2nd March 2017)Sylvia Solanas Guest Mix for The Night TrainTRACKLISTINGCanned Heat - Poor MoonKing Curtis - Night TrainThe Move - I Can Hear The Grass GrowUnloved - When a Woman Is AroundOSEES - Also The Gorilla...Funkadelic - A Joyful Processmoog dub - 2562TRG - Broken Heart (Martyn's DCM Remix)Martyn X Om Unit - DragonflyDavid Axelrod - Human Abstract (Om Unit edit)Prince Jammy - InterfaceClancy Eccles - Dollar TrainHokum Boys - You Can't Get Enough Of That StuffBullwackies All Stars - All For FreeTim Reaper; Ontology - This Music Belongs To All Of Us (Tim Reaper Remix)Loveage - Pit Stop (Take Me Home)Ikebe Shakedown - No AnswerAbeti et les Redoutables - Musique TshilubaCheryl Thompson - Black NightTremosphere - All I Want Is YouMark Lanegan - Strange ReligionHank Willams - The Angel Of Death (Undubbed Version)Photek - Into The 90sPoppy H - Flat & WhiteMary Lattimore - Hold Your BreathAdam Wiltzie - Mexican HeliumKevin Richard Martin - To DisappearAphex Twin - XtalBuddy Peace - Florida Happyworriedaboutsatan - What Happened In Brooklyn

Boston-based Marissa Nadler writes intimate, sweeping dreamy and eerie songs, that shimmer with gothic melancholy. On her 2018 record, For My Crimes, she enlisted accomplished musicians: harpist Mary Lattimore, drummer Patty Schemel (Hole), experimental multi-instrumentalist Janel Leppin, and Eva Gardner plays additional bass. Guest vocals came from Angel Olsen, Kristin Kontrol (Dum Dum Girls), and Sharon Van Etten, plus saxophonist Dana Colley (Morphine) was also a collaborator. These bittersweet and sharp slow burning tunes have a piercing intensity, driven home by Nadler's gripping voice. Marissa Nadler performs some of these songs in their stripped-down form, in-studio (from the Archives, 2018.) -Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. For My Crimes 2. Said Goodbye to That Car 3. Laraaji is often thought of as one of progenitors of new age music. He was discovered by Brian Eno while playing meditational music in Washington Square Park in the early 1980's. After studying classical composition at Howard University's College of Fine arts from 1962 to 1964, Laraaji was initially drawn to the world of stand-up comedy, which he excelled in. He was featured in the movie Putney Swope, but though the career path of an actor did not blend well enough with his interest in spirituality, laughter remained a key trope in the composition of his life. His playful, trickster persona pleasantly offsets the meaningful koans of wisdom he gifts throughout his work. Laraaji's approach to creating music and to making speech is not just an art form; it's a deep, meditative process that invites both the performer and the listener into a state of present-moment awareness. In doing so, Laraaji bridges the gap between the terrestrial and the cosmic, awakening a dormant understanding that everything in the universe is interconnected, and playing out simultaneously. Beyond his unique perspective, Laraaji is quite simply a musical genius, very very prolific, with more than 50 albums to date and a full 2024 performance schedule. His music provides a wonderful companion to meditation, to journeying, to walking, to breathing, to being. Laraaji was at Esalen as part of Esalen's inagural Go Within series, curated and hosted by Sadia Bruce, which also featured performances from Mary Lattimore and Snow Raven. https://www.esalen.org/learn/go-within-winter-series-2023-2024 Laraaji and Sam sat down and did this in front of a live studio audience in late December 2023. We began with a beautiful micro concert, performed by Laraaji and Arji Oceananda. Laraaji's 2024 tour schedule and more: http://laraaji.blogspot.com/
