Host Evie Stokes sits down with Bree and Robin of Seattle duo Faerie Born. The group takes inspiration from Sarah J. Maas’ wildly popular romantasy book series A Court of Thorns and Roses. The three chat about their mutual love of the books, playing fantasy conventions, and their debut album Morally Grey. They also share a song from Julianna Barwick & Mary Lattimore, the stunning “The Four Sleeping Princesses.” The song comes from the Barwick and Lattimore’s latest album Tragic Magic, out now on InFiné Records.Produced by Dusty HenryMastered by: William MyersProduction support: Serafima HealyListen to the full songs on KEXP's "In Our Headphones" playlist on Spotify or the “What's In Our Headphones” playlist on YouTube.Support the podcast: kexp.org/headphonesContact us at headphones@kexp.org.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Lo dice literalmente en su nueva canción, 'Rock Music': “I think the dance floor is dead / So now we’re making rock music”. Today, we're putting The Tonearm's needle on Julianna Barwick and Mary Lattimore.Julianna is a composer, vocalist, and producer whose music is built almost entirely from layered, looped human voices. Mary is a harpist who has spent years pushing that instrument into a vast, exploratory realm. In January 2025, the two flew to Paris just days after the LA wildfires tore through their community. There, they spent nine days recording with instruments pulled from a museum, including harps dating back to 1728 and vintage analog synthesizers. The result is Tragic Magic, out on InFiné, and it's one of the most talked-about records of the year so far.Julianna and Mary just returned from Big Ears Festival and, in a few days, are heading back to Paris to perform these songs live with those same instruments. Ambient composer, vocalist, and producer, Julianna Barwick and experimental harpist and composer Mary Lattimore, have been friends for over a decade, have toured together, and even guested on each other's albums, but their duo album Tragic Magic is their first full length collaboration and was brought about by a remarkable set of circumstances and an opportunity to record at the Museum of Musical Instruments in Paris. Julianna and Mary join Carmel Holt at Mophonics Studios in New York for a very special conversation recorded in front of a live audience.

A harpist since childhood–as well as the daughter of one–Mary Lattimore’s choice of instrument reveals the simple beauty it contains, transcending the stereotype of it being strictly for use in classical music or as flourishes in movie soundtracks. Her ability to cut straight to the heart in her compositions works the same trick, not relying on the standard glissandos often employed by traditional players, but simply reducing the instrument to its essence. Her most recent release is a duet with Julianna Barwick, Tragic Magic, and came out in January of 2026. The duo will perform at this year’s Big Ears Festival in Knoxville in March of 2026. Hear how songs by Debussy, The Cure, and Sonic Youth guided her musical path.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Buck Meek is here for a talk about his charming, confessional new album, The Mirror, coming up in Wimberley, Texas and people's misconceptions of the Lone Star State, the vibrancy of transient college towns, how his grandmother's death and caring for his grandfather galvanized his family and inspired aspects of The Mirror, writing songs about communication, teaching, language, speech, parenting, and family, pondering duality, mid-life, and overcoming societal inhibitions, a unique recording studio set-up, ambience and intuitive expression, being a participant in Bob Dylan's Shadow Kingdom film and recording project, upcoming solo and Big Thief tour dates, other future plans, and much more.EVERY OTHER COMPLETE KREATIVE KONTROL EPISODE IS ONLY ACCESSIBLE TO PATREON SUPPORTERS STARTING AT $6/MONTH. Da sind wir wieder! Hurra!
Mary Lattimore left a voicemail about her fantastic new LP with Julianna Barwick "Tragic Magic" recorded with rare instruments from the Musée de la Musique at the Philharmonie de Paris. Plus we'll spin new indie pop from Heavenly, local Valentines sounds from The Corsican, and our fave ever track from Rufus Wainwright
On today's episode, I talk to harpist Mary Lattimore. Originally from Asheville, North Carolina, Mary began playing the harp as a tween and eventually attended the Eastman School of Music to study it more seriously. In 2012, Mary released her first album, a self-titled cassette, on Fred Thomas' Life Like imprint. This was re-released a year later on Desire Path Recordings with a new title, The Withdrawing Room. Since then, she's released almost a dozen more albums and collaborations on labels like Ghostly International, Three Lobed and Thrill Jockey, and her latest, Tragic Magic, an album she made with Julianna Barwick, was just released in the middle of January, and it's fantastic! Peter plays guitars, bass, keyboards, and mandolin, and Wolfgang provides the drums for the tracks. Ethereal Dialogue by Jason Blake favorite track Pluvial Thoughts Chicagoan Jason Blake plays Warr guitar, often in a more progressive rock style rather than this atmospheric outing. He combines looping and various echo effects into resplendent meditations Ni blomster i en åker by Ævestaden favorite track Jag vill ut och du vill ner i jorden This Norwegian trio of multi-instrumentalists play fiddle, jaw harp, lyres, kantele, cow horn, and electronics. They expertly blend vocal harmonies into a rich pastiche which harkens to ancient Nordic traditions. Desert Electric by Rubi Ate the Fig favorite track Gilgamesh Based out of New Mexico, the core band is led by composter Sharon Eliashar on vocals and guitar, members add qanun, drums and other percussion, guitars, keyboards, bass, saz, cello, and buzuq. Guest musicians play ney, Arabic strings, additional percussion, duduk, oud, zourna, farfisa organ, additional backing vocals, a string quartet, and probably there's a kitchen sink in there, too. The music is a heady amalgamation of rock and psych, blended with Middle Eastern traditions. Tragic Magic by Julianna Barwick & Mary Lattimore favorite track Perpetual Adoration Here is a collaboration of vocalist and electronica composer Julianna Barwick and harpist Mary Lattimore. Recorded at the Philharmonie de Paris, they utilized the Musée de la Musique's instrument collection, which included ancient harps and analog synths. Together they have created a bewitching musical spell. Lemon Crash – 25th Anniversary Edition by Europa String Choir favorite track Waterfall around for just a little while. This is a release with the pieces being reworked with modern equipment for superior sound. Instruments are 6-string violectra, guitars, and 8-string touch guitar, producing a heady blend of acoustic and electric music. Echoe’s End by Tyler Kamen favorite track Spirit Box, Pt. 2 – The Dream New York psych/folk/blues-tinged multi-instrumentalist and composer Tyler Kamen returns with this lovely, layered, lysergic plunge deep into the otherworld. There is no mistaking his signature sound for anyone else, yet each release is not merely delving into the same territory as the ones before. Dreamy and phantasmagoric. Sound Ceremony (Live in Zurich, Spring 2024) by Estas Tonne feat. Ali Ghamsari, Sylvia Kirchherr, Ben Aylon, Yonatan Bar Rashi favorite track Wheel of Life-The Insight This superb guitarist and composer is joined live with guests on Iranian tar, various percussion instruments and vocalists. He has indeed created somewhat of a ceremonial atmosphere for this show, with several extended pieces, which are stunning. For brevity's sake, I am choosing Wheel of Life – The Insight, which reflects most of what you will find here. Nature Reversed by Ashley Reaks favorite track Deep Inside Our Silent Sorrow Ashley Reaks has issued another fine release, which sounds unmistakenly like him, and no one else. These songs are all inspired by the Yorkshire Dales, but don't expect them to be cheerily bucolic because of that. These are dark dales, where the wanderer is struggling with angst and faces his own inner familial demons. He eventually succeeds, finding a sort of peace after he has faced them and the storms have passed. FAUN “Drei Tage” Single 2026 FAUN return with their superb amalgamation of traditional and modern instrumentation that places them squarely at the leading edge of the dark/pagan/medieval folk pack. Drei Tage features dulcet vocals and lush orchestration, it's full of mystery and Nordic darkness.

For our 50th episode, we have an extra special guest who I was so honored to speak with: musical artist/harpist Mary Lattimore! Mary's ethereal instrumental music, particularly her 2020 album Silver Ladders, was a cornerstone of my self-care in pregnancy, and I've been a massive fan ever since. Mary joined me virtually from her home in Los Angeles to discuss her favorite ways to build and nurture community and sustain inspiration in her artistry, the scoop on her favorite artist residencies, dreaming as a form of processing the nightmare that is the current political climate in the US, lucid dreaming, and oh so much more! With permission from the artist and her management, this episode includes a snippet from Mary's forthcoming song, “A Lock of His Hair Under Glass”This episode touches on the following topics:The Aces in Tarot (specifically the Ace of Wands)Sustainable artistic practicesBuilding an artistic community The value of practicing various art forms in an unskilled wayWhere to find artist residency programs Artistic inspiration through nature and unfamiliar environmentsAnimism relating to musical instrumentsThe arts as political resistanceDreaming as a way to process our deep emotionsLucid dreaming School of Song and their amazing Brian Eno workshop (!!)The Artist's Way by Julia CameronYour Brain on Art by Susan Magsamen and Ivy Ross Follow Mary's work and various projects here and here! In this episode, Abby interviews harpist and composer Mary Lattimore about her most recent album Goodbye, Hotel Arkada, her musical collaborations, and her instrument in all its epic visceral and metaphorical power. Together, they present “The Pity of Love” by William Butler Yeats.Recitation begins at 34:38The Pity of LoveWilliam Butler YeatsA pity beyond all tellingIs hid in the heart of love:The folk who are buying and selling,The clouds on their journey above,The cold wet winds ever blowing,And the shadowy hazel grove Where mouse-grey waters are flowing,Threaten the head that I love.
Welcome back to Transmissions, your weekly conversational series from Aquarium Drunkard in partnership with the Talkhouse Podcast Network. This week on the show, a long awaited return visit from Lonnie Holley. The Atlanta artist joins us alongside his manager, Matt Arnett, son of William Arnett, the Southern art curator and collector who brought Holley to the attention of the art world in the 1980s. In those days, Holley often worked directly with trash—taking discarded materials to forge his sculptures. Philip K. Dick has said “the symbols of the divine show up in our world initially at the trash stratum,” and in Lonnie's case, that truth is made evident. His art draws from what's thrown out—a theme he returns to often—but also from personal tragedy: first artistic project was carving headstones for his sister's two children, who died in a house fire in Alabama in 1979. Since then, his found-object assemblages, paintings, and collages have endeared him to the fine art world—they have even been displayed in the Smithsonian and the White House—in part due to the patronage and care of Arnett's father. But the younger Arnett helped Holley get on the path he walks know, as an oracular sculpture of sound. Lonnie and Matt join us ahead of the March 21st release of Holley's new album, Tonky. Crafted with Irish producer Jacknife Lee (R.E.M., U2, The Killers) and featuring guests like Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse, harpist Mary Lattimore, rappers Billy Woods and Open Mike Eagle, spoken word from Saul Williams, and others, Tonky rattles with blues-punk-industrial art folk anthems. We discussed the new album, Holley's poetic metaphysics, and his work with kindred spirit Richard Swift. You can read a full transcript of this conversation at Aquarium Drunkard, where you'll find 20 years worth of playlists, recommendations, reviews, interviews, podcasts, essays, and more. Boston-based Marissa Nadler writes intimate, sweeping dreamy and eerie songs, that shimmer with gothic melancholy. On her 2018 record, For My Crimes, she enlisted accomplished musicians: harpist Mary Lattimore, drummer Patty Schemel (Hole), experimental multi-instrumentalist Janel Leppin, and Eva Gardner plays additional bass. Guest vocals came from Angel Olsen, Kristin Kontrol (Dum Dum Girls), and Sharon Van Etten, plus saxophonist Dana Colley (Morphine) was also a collaborator. These bittersweet and sharp slow burning tunes have a piercing intensity, driven home by Nadler's gripping voice. Marissa Nadler performs some of these songs in their stripped-down form, in-studio (from the Archives, 2018.) -Caryn Havlik Set list: 1. For My Crimes 2. Said Goodbye to That Car 3.
