It's been a busy spring for Julien Baker: she just released a collaborative album with Torres, ‘Send A Prayer My Way', played Coachella with boygenius, & announced her relationship with bandmate Lucy Dacus. Given all that, it seemed like a great time to re-issue my conversation with her from back in 2021. We talked about her last solo record, ‘Little Oblivions', OCD, addiction & relapse, spirituality, & tons more. Her honesty throughout this conversation is why it remains one of my favourite interviews I've done, & one that has also resonated with a lot of you. Before a song is released, a record is produced, or a chorus is written, the musicians that write them think. A lot. They live. A lot. And they feel. A LOT. Hosted by award-winning interviewer Sofia Loporcaro, Before the Chorus explores the genuine human experiences behind the music. Sofia's deep knowledge of music and personal journey with mental health help her connect with artists on a meaningful level. This is a space where fans connect with artists, and listeners from all walks of life feel seen through the stories that shape the music we love. About the host: Sofia Loporcaro is an award-winning interviewer and radio host who's spent over 8 years helping musicians share their stories. She's hosted shows for Amazing Radio, and Transmission Roundhouse. La suite de la soirée alterne entre énergie brute - Cage The Elephant, Viagra Boys, System Of A Down - et envolées mélodiques avec CMAT, The Mamas and the Papas, et The Cramps. En fin d'émission, Garbage dévoile un extrait de leur prochain album "Let All That We Imagine Be the Light", et Pogo Car Crash Control revient avec "Comme Toi", fraîcheur noise venue d'Île-de-France. Songwriter Lucy Dacus talks about her new album, Forever Is A Feeling. In conversation with Emily Fox, she discusses everything from love, lyricism, and making conscious decisions to step away from boygenius and her solo work to find balance and stillness. She also breaks down some of her favorite songs and lyrical moments on the new record. “I keep saying this, how you spend your time is how you spent your life. And that has been a really profound cliche to remember,” Dacus says. “You're in charge of your time more than you realize.”Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Springtime brings musical renewal as hosts Matt and Sam curate twelve standout tracks spanning the contemporary music landscape. Their carefully selected mixtape captures everything from Lady Gaga's 80s-inspired dance anthem "Killa" to the tender acoustic stylings of Third Eye Blind's "Like a Lullaby," demonstrating how established artists continue evolving while staying true to their signature sounds. The mixtape delivers unexpected delights like Lexi Liu's reimagining of Le Tigre's "Decepticon," which transforms a 1999 indie classic into a fresh pop gem. Indie rock fans will appreciate the separate appearances of Boy Genius alumni Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker, while Queens-based rapper Lil Tecca demonstrates remarkable talent for a 23-year-old who's been creating music since childhood. The mix finishes with a range of songs from the cathartic rage of Dinosaur Pileup to the unity message in The Lathams' "Heartbreaker." The Criticals' remake of their own song "Good Lookin'" years after its original release, and explore how Matt Berninger's solo work compares to his output with The National. What new music are you discovering this spring? This one's for the girlypops! Jodi and Nora first gab about our favorite problematic women of the week, including the hold that Jordon Hudson seems to have on her grandpa-boyfriend Bill Belichick (2:53), Club Chalamet and Gwyneth Paltrow marketing ‘Marty Supreme' in very different but ultimately problematic ways (15:15), and Millie Bobby Brown revealing strange things about her life on the press tour for her flop Netflix movie ‘The Electric State' (29:38). Then, they touch on Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker from the group Boygenius going public with their adorable relationship (38:09). Finally, they dig into the debate sparked this week on TikTok over “boring” New York City influencers and whether they can claim to have influence over anybody (45:55) before sharing their personal obsessions for the week (1:11:25). Lucy Dacus has a new album coming out on March 28th, called Forever Is A Feeling. So, in the week before it comes out, I thought it could be nice to revisit her Song Exploder episode from 2021. It's about the beautiful and brutally heartbreaking song "Thumbs," which I love. And since recording that episode, Lucy's won three Grammy awards as part of her band Boygenius, including Album of the Year. But back in 2021, I had a really nice afternoon talking to Lucy. She was the first guest to come over and record with me at my studio, in person, after COVID hit. So I have a lot of fond memories about this one, and I hope you'll enjoy listening or re-listening to it with me.Lucy Dacus is a singer and songwriter from Richmond, Virginia. She put out her first album in 2016, and in 2018 she formed the band Boygenius with Julien Baker and Phoebe Bridgers. In June 2021, she released her third album, Home Video, which includes this song, "Thumbs." The first time I heard it, I knew I wanted to ask Lucy about how and why she made it. After some COVID testing, we spoke in person here in Los Angeles. And she told me the story of how "Thumbs" took months and months to get right. For more, visit songexploder.net/lucy-dacus.

On her fourth solo album, “Forever Is a Feeling” (out March 28), Lucy Dacus contemplates the fears and delights that go along with falling hard for someone. The song “Best Guess” celebrates the leap of faith involved in committing to a partner with the knowledge that both of you will change over time. And in another track called “Talk,” a couple realizes they've grown apart because they have nothing more to say to each other. In this episode, Dacus reads Molly Pascal's Modern Love essay “How the ‘Dining Dead' Got Talking Again,” about a couple who sets out to bring conversation back into their marriage. And Dacus tells Anna Martin why she's not afraid to put in the work for long-term love.Lucy Dacus' fourth solo album, “Forever Is a Feeling,” is out March 28.Molly Pascal's essay can be found here. Here's how to submit a Modern Love essay to The New York Times. Here's how to submit a Tiny Love Story. +++ PLAYLIST +++ · 22:56 – SABATO von ALESSANDRO GIANNELLI · 22:52 – WATERTREES von SUPERNOVA EASY · 22:50 – I'VE BEEN DOWN von HAIM · 22:44 – TELL ME HOW TO BE HERE von LAEL NEALE · 22:40 – RICHARDSON von SHURA FEAT.
