Kiwis will be able to experience the drama as ‘Nine Perfect Strangers' returns for a second season. Nicole Kidman's Masha Dmitrichenko has invited a new cast of characters to join a transformational wellness retreat in the Austrian Alps, pushing them to the brink over the course of a week. Annie Murphy and Murray Bartlett are among the cast, playing alongside Henry Golding, Lena Olin, Christine Baranski, Lucas Englander, King Princess, Dolly de Leon, Maisie Richardson-Sellers, Mark Strong, Aras Aydin, and of course, Nicole Kidman. For Murphy, the ensemble nature was a huge draw, telling Mike Hosking she was thrilled by the prospect. “We were there for six months Munich, with a whole bunch of really talented, really theatre, dorky actors... I was thrilled.” Bartlett was also excited to be a part of the show, having watched and “devoured” the first season. Season 2 will be releasing on May 22nd worldwide on Amazon Prime.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Donna Missal over Zoom video! In the summer of 2022, Donna Missal was disoriented to find herself living out of her car and on friends' couches in Los Angeles, questioning whether she could continue – financially and emotionally – to make music. In the past five years, she had collected tens of millions of streams across platforms, cultivated a passionate fan base for her heartfelt songwriting, played festivals from Bonnaroo to Bottle Rock, and toured with high-profile artists including Lewis Capaldi, CHVRCHES, and King Princess. Rolling Stone calls her music “stunning”, and Billboard has hailed her “drop kick of a vocal.” But still, Missal was struggling. Working through the pain, she found refuge in the creative process, digging deep into her beliefs about safety and satisfaction.Missal had started out as a songwriter and backing artist, collaborating with artists like Tinashe, Sharon Van Etten, Macklemore, and Lee Fields, and landing a publishing contract in her early 20s. After what The Guardian called the “strident queer torch songs” of 2020s Lighter, Missal became a sought-out vocalist, tapped to contribute a cover of Cigarettes After Sex's “Nothing's Gonna Hurt You Baby” for the Oscar-winning film Promising Young Woman. In the confines of the early pandemic, Missal dove into bedroom pop recordings, using her powerful voice in a quieter way to avoid disturbing her neighbors. She showcased this spare and sexy homespun electronica on 2022's in the mirror, in the night EP, which was executive produced by Sega Bodega (FKA Twigs, Caroline Polachek). We want to hear from you! After a number of years in small-market television journalism, 7x Emmy-winner Anthony Mason joined CBS News in 1986 and has quite literally done it all: from being a chief correspondent in London and Moscow, to handling Q&A's with American presidents. But maybe most notably, Anthony has now become a go-to confidant for musicians of all stripes. Carving his own path on the network thanks to a lifelong passion for songwriting, he's profiled legends like Elton John, Mick Jagger, Patti Smith, Joni Mitchell and Aretha Franklin. Plus, for up-and-comers seeking credibility, an interview with Anthony can rival a glowing review from Pitchfork or Rolling Stone, so non-household names like Charley Crockett and King Princess are given a new, nationwide audience courtesy of a conversation with today's guest. On this episode, Anthonly divulges how UPS once lost his entire record collection, what momento he took from a then-shuttering Tower Records in the late 2000's, and how he's navigated some incredibly personal moments with the likes of Bruce Springsteen, Neil Diamond and John Mellancamp. In the 20th century, queer people had the phrase “are you a friend of Dorothy?” But in 2022, there's the saying “do you listen to girl in red?” If you're young, queer, or on Tiktok, you might have noticed a growing community of artists and listeners over the past few years under the banner of “sapphic pop,” a term recently coined referring to music by and/or for sapphics (a.k.a. women or femme folks attracted to other femme folks). Journalist Emma Madden defines the folk-inspired sound as having a “soft tactile approach” that's “more sensual than it is sexual.” This umbrella folds in everyone from indie pop veterans Tegan & Sara to nonbinary artists like King Princess; even artists like Hozier and Sufjan Stevens are, improbably, considered sapphic pop, with their music having the same sonic qualities of other songs dedicated to feminine yearning. From articles popping up in multiple news outlets to the majority of Taylor Swift's openers for this upcoming tour (looking at MUNA, girl in red, and Phoebe Bridgers, specifically), the terminology of “sapphic pop” has come to define a scene almost out of nowhere. This week on Switched On Pop, we explore exactly what sapphic pop is, where it came from, and how artists feel about it – even asking Tegan & Sara and King Princess directly. You can listen wherever you get podcasts. — Songs discussed: Clairo – Sofia King Princess – Talia girl in red – i wanna be your girlfriend Hozier – Cherry Wine (live) Alex G – Sarah The Velvet Underground – I Found A Reason Sufjan Stevens – To Be Alone With You Cris Williamson – Shine On Straight Arrow Jaylib, Madlib, J Dilla – The Red Taylor Swift – betty Brittany Howard – Georgia MUNA, Phoebe Bridgers – Silk Chiffon Tegan & Sara – Call It Off Tegan & Sara – Smoking Weed Alone King Princess – 1950 King Princess – I Hate Myself, I Want To Party King Princess – Pussy is God Kate Bush – Why Should I Love You? King Princess is the project of Mikaela Strauss, a singer, songwriter, and producer from Brooklyn. She's a platinum-selling artist, and she put out her second album in July, 2022. The last track on the album is the song "Let Us Die." Rolling Stone called it "the banger of the year." In this episode, Mikaela breaks down the song, along with two of her collaborators on it: co-producer and co-writer Ethan Gruska, and multi-Grammy winning producer Mark Ronson. You'll hear the original voice memo that Mikaela recorded, and the demo she made with Ethan. And you'll hear the drums recorded by the late Taylor Hawkins, the legendary drummer of Foo Fighters and Alanis Morissette, who passed away earlier this year. As broadcast July 12, 2022 with plenty of disco to treat with tender, loving care. Tonight we mark the mania that was Disco Demolition Night at Chicago's Comiskey Park in 1979. As disco faded and the backlash became enormous amongst the rock heads, Steve Dahl made some very weird, quite ugly history when he blew up some "disco" records fans brought in. But we love disco, so we payed tribute to a trailblazer and revolutionary of the disco and Pride game in Sylvester to start. We had the pleasure of interviewing Mallrat over Zoom video. Mallrat's prized pop songwriting has become a beacon the Australian music industry will eagerly follow, and on her debut album Butterfly Blue, she embodies the spirit of its titular creature – but without the delicacy that keeps you at a distance. Over a dozen clever and open-hearted tracks, Mallrat – aka Grace Shaw – draws you in close and shows you the world through her wide, hopeful eyes. On Butterfly Blue, a lifetime of collecting influences across genres – from folk, country, and Florence + The Machine to the moody noir pop of Lana Del Rey and Azealia Banks' bold and charismatic hip-hop – come together into one vast and tender debut, a compilation of Shaw's emotions as eclectic and cohesive as those soundtracks she pored over. With combined streams topping 300 million, her trio of early EPs – Uninvited (2016), In The Sky (2018), Driving Music (2019) – are documents of an artist on the rise. In the process of making them, Shaw swapped the Brisbane suburbs for Los Angeles and toured both at home and internationally, including European and North American supports for Maggie Rogers and King Princess, selling out headline shows from London to New York, and collecting fans in the likes of Mark Ronson on the way. Butterfly Blue solidifies Mallrat's reputation as a master of clever, timeless pop. Sweeping across vast, airy production is often surprising samples and sounds tucked under the surface: chopped-up Gangsta Pat bars, a flipped recording of a children's choir performing Lisztomania. Distorted effects were recorded from discarded children's toys – a sonic gift from Clams Casino's producer. Layered, like an instrument all their own, are her signature breathy vocals, more assured than ever, worthy of the same attention and fixation she once applied to Imogen Heap's. Mallrat's journey to become the artist capable of making such an accomplished record has been a fascinating one – to watch and experience. Describing the metamorphosis of her favorite insect, she explains breathlessly: "The transformation they undergo is almost incomprehensible. They dissolve into goo and then reconstruct themselves – but hold onto the memories of their time as a caterpillar." She could just as easily be describing the next phase for Australia's rising pop princess as she prepares to unfurl her wings and show you how she's grown. We want to hear from you! We had the pleasure of interviewing TAYLOR ALXNDR over Zoom video! TAYLOR ALXNDR (they/she) is a DIY musician, drag performer, and community organizer based in Atlanta, GA. Raised in the rural edges of the metro area, ALXNDR has been creating in and captivating Atlanta and beyond since 2011. ALXNDR is the co-founder and current executive director of Southern Fried Queer Pride (SFQP), an Atlanta-based non-profit organization empowering Black queer and QTPOC centered communities in the South through the arts. They are also the mother of the House of ALXNDR, an Atlanta-based drag family and events hub, creating drag-centered, inclusive events. Getting her start performing at dive bars in the local Atlanta subversive queer drag scene, ALXNDR broke through in 2017 with her debut single “Nightwork”, an ode to the underbelly of nightlife. She followed it with her debut EP, Noise, later that year. In 2018, ALXNDR released her debut album Hologram. An observation of social media, technology, and communication set to dance-floor ready synth-pop with 80s flourishes, Hologram received critical acclaim and was listed as one of the top 10 albums to come from Atlanta in 2018 (#10). Writing, producing, and creative directing all of her music and content, ALXNDR's DIY approach to her craft is born out of a need for honesty and an appreciation of the art form. ALXNDR's live shows are a mixture of her interactive and improvisational background in drag, interest in video projection, and a foundational belief that music can make you think and dance. This has led her to perform with Charli XCX, King Princess, Mr Twin Sister, Sateen, & more. TAYLOR's work has bee featured in Vice, Forbes, Out Magazine, Vogue, them., and more. Bandcamp called them an “underground drag icon”. They were voted as Atlanta's Best Drag Queen & Best LGBTQ Performer in 2019. We want to hear from you! As broadcast March 21, 2022 with plenty of spring for your podcast steppin. Tonight we welcome two very new things with open arms on The Drop, with the start of Season 7 of the show happening on Spring Solstice, we couldn't possibly take that as a bad sign, although Iggy Pop and David Bowie weren't having the most auspicious night on this date in 1976, which is our history opener for the gig. Tons of great new tunes to cover on the show tonight, with new tunes from The Smile, Bon Iver, and a new album announced from Arcade Fire to highlight. However, we were missing Kat Bass at least in the studio this week as she came down with COVID, so is trapped at home until later this week as a result. Great cuts to hear in our 2nd hour Popcast feature from her as well though, although without her lovely voice. Nothing serious with Kat's situation though, she's doing well so no worries!#feelthegravityTracklisting: Part I (00:00)Iggy Pop – The PassengerAndrew Bird – AtomizedYumi Zouma – Astral ProjectionsDent May – Crying LaughingArcade Fire – The Lightning IArcade Fire – The Lightning II Part II (32:12)The Smile – Skrting On The SurfaceEthan Gruska – So UnimportantHovvdy – Everythingwhy mona – lemonsMt.
