What the Riff!?! has finished covering every month from January 1965 to December 1994, and we are thrilled that you have listened with us as we review the great bands, songs, and happenings of this 30-year time span. In this episode, we bring back Brian Dickhute, one of our co-founders of the podcast, and review what we have learned, experienced, and enjoyed about this period of songs and podcast. We also feature a number of songs that were either missed in our coverage of the times, or that were important to us individually.Eruption by Van HalenWayne brings us this instrumental by Eddie Van Halen that announced the start of the Van Halen band on their first album.Long Live Rock by the WhoWayne's favorite group wrote this anthem to the genre.Black Hole Sun by SoundgardenLynch features a song that front man Chris Cornell wrote in about 15 minutes, inspired by a misheard statement from a TV weatherman.Creeping Death by MetallicaLynch brings us the first and only commercial single from Metallica's second album, "Ride the Lightning."Closer to the Heart by RushOf course Bruce is going to feature Rush in this last episode, in this case an anthem encouraging all to strive to live closer to the heart.Ridin' the Storm Out by REO SpeedwagonBruce thinks this song should have been featured earlier, and notes that the live version is much better than the studio set. Mother by Pink FloydOne of Brian's favorite groups, this song is selected from "The Wall" album, chronicling Pink's descent into madness. Going to California by Led ZeppelinBrian's second selection this week is a ballad off the legendary fourth album, a song originally inspired by earthquakes in California. The One Thing by INXSRob's selection is the introduction most Americans had to this Australian band in 1982, and one of his favorite songs.Mr. Blue Sky by ELORob finishes off this celebration with one of the happiest rock songs you will hear, one he wants played at his funeral. In Episode 169 of Joe & Reese's Pickle & Boot Shop Podcast, Joe and Reese gripe about kids dodging bedtime because the sun's still up and rave about Bucharest Grill's quesadilla sticks. Reese admits to dropping $700 on Electric Light Orchestra's final London show, while they laugh over one of Sonny Johnson's practical jokes. They also cheer a 17-year-old running a collision shop. Send us a textStrange Magic, Sad Illusions: An ELO-rical LetdownThis week on The Wednesday Night Podcast, we're tuning into the cosmic sounds of Electric Light Orchestra's "Face The Music," with a special spotlight on the wonderfully weird "Strange Magic." Prepare for soaring strings, Jeff Lynne's unmistakable vocals, and a generous serving of 1970s prog-pop goodness. But hold on to your laser beams, because things are about to get… decidedly less magical. Inspired by the mystical vibes of ELO, Craig recounts his utterly underwhelming experience at a David Copperfield magic show in the dazzling (and apparently illusion-challenged) city of Las Vegas.Prepare for tales of vanishing acts that didn't quite vanish, levitation that looked suspiciously like wires, and the crushing realization that maybe, just maybe, some "strange magic" is just… not that strange. Did Craig witness a true illusionist, or just a man with a fog machine and a questionable haircut? So, dim the lights, put on your headphones, and join us for a journey from the symphonic heights of ELO to the disappointing depths of Vegas stage magic. It's a show that will leave you wondering if the real magic is just the ability to get through a mediocre performance.website: actonmusicproject.comemail: music@actonmusicproject.comCraig's phone number: (978) 310-1613

The single had peaked at No. 4 on the US singles chart. In the UK Atlantic Records had expected to issue the edited version themselves, and pressed initial copies for release on 5th December 1969. However, band manager Peter Grant was adamant that the band maintain a 'no-singles' approach to marketing their recorded music in the UK, and he halted the release. 1972 - The Electric Light Orchestra made their debut at The Fox and Greyhound in Croydon, London. ELO were formed to accommodate former Move members Roy Wood and Jeff Lynne's desire to create modern rock and pop songs with classical overtones. Co-host Jeremy spins selections from the debut solo album by English singer-songwriter Roy Wood. Best known for his work with bands like the Move, Electric Light Orchestra, and Wizzard, Wood's solo work carries a similar knack for pop hooks and eccentric arrangements, the latter quality amplified by the fact that he's playing everything. And whatever we got up to back in the day—tooling around town in her Chevette, rocking out in downtown Youngstown, or just chilling in any of our respective basements—music was involved. No surprise that Alli was firmly at the top of our guest list. Here's hoping this is the first of many of her appearances on The Mixtape Diaries!Credits: Intro/ Outro — the Februarys, "Does Your Father Know"/ "... In a Letter."

Whilst conducting my meticulous research for Gail….I was taken back to 1980 - my year of transition that was painful, perplexing, exciting, scary – a tussle between my heavily Top of The Pops Top 40 oriented collection, my classical cello playing and a new, emerging, Through The Looking Glass world of punk, post-punk and hardcore. Not easy bedfellows for 12 year old me, I can tell you.One of the songs in that struggle was Xanadu by Olivia Newton-John and Electric Light Orchestra. I think that the new punk crowd that I was gravitating towards would have sent me much further than Coventry had they known that this record was in my collection, such were the no cross-genre rules. So what does this rather tedious story have with today's episode? Well, it's as tenuous as you'll have come to expect. After growing up adoring her music, Gail holds the accolade of and standing on stage with Olivia Newton-John and a huge orchestra playing Xanadu in front of thousands of genuine fans. This connection, however tenuous, feels in some way serendipitous, and actually rather glorious in a way that only music can be. This is just one part of an incredible, pioneering – and I don't use that word loosely - life journey that's led to three solo albums and a whole raft of collaborations with people like Lenny Kravitz, Gwen Stefani, Tears For Fears, Gang of Four, Boy George, The The and, of course…. David Bowie. Discovery es el octavo álbum de estudio de la banda británica Electric Light Orchestra, publicado por la compañía discográfica Jet Records en mayo de 1979. Discovery fue grabado en los Musicland Studios de Múnich, Alemania, de forma similar a trabajos anteriores como Face the Music, A New World Record y Out of the Blue.
