RJJ Software's Software Development Service This episode of The Modern .NET Show is supported, in part, by RJJ Software's Software Development Services, whether your company is looking to elevate its UK operations or reshape its US strategy, we can provide tailored solutions that exceed expectations. Show Notes "Yeah, exactly. In fact, one of the central premises of Dapr has, you know, one of its goals is not only to be multi-language, in that anyone can use the APIs from any language they come from. So it has SDKs. First, you can call it HTTP if that's all you care about. But it has SDKs for Java, JavaScript, of course, .NET, Python, and Go."— Mark Fussell Welcome friends to The Modern .NET Show; the premier .NET podcast, focusing entirely on the knowledge, tools, and frameworks that all .NET developers should have in their toolbox. We are the go-to podcast for .NET developers worldwide, and I am your host: Jamie “GaProgMan” Taylor. In this episode, Mark Fussell from Diagrid joins us to talk about Dapr—that's D-A-P-R—the Distributed Application Runtime, which aims to make it trivial to build applications in a distributed manner: covering things like service discovery, Pubsub messaging, and distribution of your microservice-based applications. "And the reason why I mentioned that is because, going to your AI discussion, is that we had an amazing contributor actually from Microsoft, actually he's ex-Microsoft now, a guy called Roberto Rodriguez, who worked in Microsoft Research, We built an agentic AI framework on top of Dapr workflows because it had this power of being able to do recoverability and coordination."— Mark Fussell Along the way, we cover the history of Dapr, how it started as a Microsoft incubator project (and was heavily inspired by Project Tye), and how it's now a full graduated project of the CNCF (Cloud Native Computing Foundation). Anyway, without further ado, let's sit back, open up a terminal, type in `dotnet new podcast` and we'll dive into the core of Modern .NET. In this episode, Marc Fussell, Founder of Take2Minutes, talks about the impact of making time for gratitude and positive thoughts on your mental health. https://www.take2minutes.org/
This week on The Business of Open Source, I spoke with Mark Fussell, CEO and co-founder of Diagrid and co-creator of Dapr, in a special episode recorded on-site at KubeCon NA in Salt Lake City. We kicked off with a discussion of what's different about running an open source company versus a proprietary software company, and Mark said that a big part of it is that you have to nurture the community. But what does that actually mean? I pushed back, and happily Mark was able to go into more specifics about what he means. We also talked about: Why, and how, to build a contributor ladder. —> worth noting here that not all companies even want to encourage outside contributions, so it was interesting to hear Mark go into this dynamic. Dapr is now a graduated project at the CNCF, and Mark talked about what changed for Dapr as a result of getting that seal of approval… as well as what changed for Diagrid. And since Diagrid is the primary maintainer of the project, this probably means Diagrid will end up spending more engineering resources on the project. The constraints that come from having your open source project hosted by the CNCF — or any other open source foundation, for that matter. The delicate balance between the engineering resources you need to put into your open source project and the engineering resources you put into your commercial product. Even though Dapr has many (around 4,000) outside contributors, it takes a huge amount of effort (and effort = money) to manage that community, and Mark talked frankly about the investment it requires to make that happen. What percentage of the open source users even know that Diagrid exists?
Shawn Fussell band is my guest this week and what a treat! They played new music ( you'll hear it first here) and some tunes you're probably familiar with. I'm a new fan not only of their inspirational music- but their kind souls. I can't wait for you to fall for them too Originally aired 11/17/2024 on 95.3 FM KHYI the Range in Dallas, TX.
On today's episode, I talk to musician Jake Xerxes Fussell. Originally from Columbus, Georgia, Jake is the son of folklorist Fred Fussell, and as a teenager began playing and studying with elder musicians in the Chattahoochee Valley, apprenticing with Piedmont blues legend Precious Bryant, with whom he toured and recorded. In 2015, Jake released his debut self-titled album composed entirely of adapted folk and blues songs on Paradise of Bachelors, his home for his next three albums: What in the Natural World, Out of Sight, Good and Green Again. In this episode of The Valley Today, host Janet Michael is joined by co-host Niki Foster of the Front Royal Warren County Chamber and her guest, Katie Bonnet, owner of Fussell Florist. Katie shares her experiences over the last two and a half years since she last appeared on the show. Initially, she bought the florist shop from Betty Showers and had no prior experience owning a business. Despite challenges, including a major remodel and unexpected flooding from Hurricane Debbie, she has successfully made the business her own. Katie discussed the journey of establishing her unique identity for Fussell Florist, distancing it from corporate chains like Teleflora. She is thrilled with the shop's recent renovations, including an open space and a creative succulent garden in what used to be a fountain. Katie is hosting a grand reopening on November 16, 2024, complete with a ribbon cutting, giveaways, kids' activities, and a unique blindfolded floral arrangement contest with her team. Niki emphasized how the Chamber supports local businesses, from new ones to well-established ones. They provide networking opportunities and practical help, like connecting Katie with people who assisted her cleanup efforts post-flooding. Katie offers specific advice for aspiring business owners: seek insight from others and don't hesitate to ask for help. She acknowledges the importance of community support, whether it's from family, staff, churches, or local organizations. The conversation also highlighted some of the unique services Fussell Florist offers: wedding arrangements, funeral flowers, gift baskets, corporate flower deliveries, and more. Katie announced a new membership program where customers can receive regular flower arrangements delivered to their door. Fussell Florist provides both live, artificial, and dried flowers, along with a variety of gifts and plants. Even silent auction items and seasonal wreaths are available. Niki informed listeners about the Chamber's upcoming Valor Awards and Coffee and Conversations events, underscoring the Chamber's ongoing commitment to fostering community connections. You can contact Fussell Florist at 540-635-1334 or visit their website at fussellflorist.net, or follow them on Facebook and Instagram for all your floral needs. Stay tuned to the Chamber's Facebook page or visit FrontRoyalChamber.com for updates on their events and initiatives.

If you've been listening to Transmissions for a while, you've noticed how often host Jason P. Woodbury brings up “time” when talking about music. And while he's certainly apt to talk about music in spiritual or "out there" terms, songs are in some ways literal time machines: they can take you back to your own past or in the case of traditional music, preserve some essential “nowness” of the human experience. Songsmith Jake Xerxes Fussell grew up understanding this intimately. As the son of folklorist, photographer, and artist Fred C. Fussell, he spent time on the road with his father, documenting the sound and feel of blues singers, indigenous fiddlers, and performers whose songbooks reached back generations. The younger Fussell carries on curatorial work through his records, applying his alternately smooth and grainy voice to traditional vernacular ballads. His latest collection is called When I'm Called. Produced by James Elkington, it finds the Durham-based songwriter joined by a cast of collaborators including Blake Mills, Joan Shelley, and Joe Westerlund of Bon Iver. Though it's comprised of traditional blues and folk, as is Fussell's trademark, it isn't a work of historicity so much as a document of how songs live; how they can be preserved, and how they can find new life. In this conversation, Fussell explains, and touches on The Beastie Boys and his time with one of our documentary heroes, Les Blank. Aquarium Drunkard is supported by our subscribers. We all have ebbs and flows. I definitely have my highs and lows still. I think mindfulness has made me more aware of when I'm having a low or when I'm having overwhelming thoughts or even depression. My mindfulness practice has helped me recognize that and get me into a better mindset more quickly instead of dwelling on it for days and weeks. Thoughts On Breathing I really enjoy box breathing. I almost modified it to be more of a triangle breathing. The idea is that I will breathe in for a count of 4, hold it for a count of 4, and exhale for a count of 4. Just doing that for a repetition of 20 times can be a form of meditation. Bullying Story Bullying is a huge problem in schools, and it always has been, probably even back when I was a kid. I think mindfulness can help with bullying. I can't speak out of experience, but I think it can help with emotional regulation. If you get bullied, you may have a fight-or-flight reactive response. However, how you react could make the situation better or worse through emotional regulation. With mindfulness you also are a little bit more self-regulated. You're more aware of your surroundings and aware of your situations. This situational awareness can keep you out of situations where you could get bullied. Water Stone saw 25% growth in revenue from 2022 to 2023, which runs counter to the ongoing narrative in the outdoor industry that has struggled with inventory overhang and other macroeconomic challenges. Fussell attributes that success to internal and external factors. Internally, she said she's built a strong team and updated the store's systems, including its POS program. Externally, nearby New River Gorge was designated as a national park and preserve in 2020, and that has helped bring in customers who are either tourists visiting the area or locals who need supplies to explore the park, Fussell said. The store has always been focused on climbing, but Water Stone is now offering a wider variety of products as well as an expanded coffee shop and a beer garden. “We spent a fair amount of money transforming the back of the shop into a hangout spot,” Fussell said. One of the strategies there is to attract people to the store with lower price point opportunities like beverages. Summary Noah Hurowitz (Twitter; LinkedIn) joins Andrew (Twitter; LinkedIn) to discuss infamous drug kingpin El Chapo. A weak link in his cybersecurity set-up would help bring him down. What You'll Learn Intelligence El Chapo's internal surveillance operation The cartel's use of cryptography to keep communications covert How cybersecurity enabled then brought down El Chapo The role of the infamous DFS – a corrupt and now disbanded intelligence agency Reflections Technology – early adopters vs. counter responders The changing nature of crime enabled by emerging technologies – spyware, drones, etc. And much, much more… Episode Notes Joaquín Archivaldo Guzmán Loera, aka El Chapo (shorty) because of his 5-foot 6-inch frame, was called by one of the agents chasing him, “the godfather of the drug world.” So, how did a low-level drug dealer from a provincial state rise to try and subvert the Mexican government to his will? What was the intelligence game that played out with regards to El Chapo? How did the cartels use spytech, tradecraft and cybersecurity to stay one step ahead of the law? How was he caught? To answer these questions and more, Andrew sat down with Noah Horowitz who covered the trial of El Chapo in Brooklyn for Rolling Stone magazine. Noah is also the author of the recent book El Chapo, and his work has appeared in the Village Voice, the Baffler and New York Magazine. And… In the El Chapo trial, question No.57 asked prospective jurors, “Are you familiar with Jesus Malverde?” If you are not familiar with this angel of the poor (el ángel de los pobres) as well as the Sinaloan narcos (el narcosantón), then you can find out why this question would be relevant here, here, here and here. Quote of the Week "So, in addition to encrypted communications…he was also installing spyware on Blackberry devices that El Chapo was giving out to his lieutenants and his girlfriends and his wives. And then EL Chapo was able to use this, the spyware program to see what was on their phones. He was able to see their text messages. He was able to see their locations. He was even able to remotely activate their mic and listen to them. And he loved that…it was like a toy to him almost. He became obsessed with it." – Noah Hurowitz Resources Headline Resource El Chapo, N.
