Cheer Up Charlie’s consecutively scores “Best of Austin” awards, and deservedly so. So unsurprisingly, most concertgoers in Austin have made fond memories at Cheer Up Charlie’s, no matter […]

Four men are facing federal charges in connection to the mounting count of 53 migrants who died of heat exhaustion after being abandoned in a tractor trailer near San Antonio this week - including the driver of the truck, who tried to pass himself off as a migrant himself when confronted by police. The first Texas city on record saying it will not enforce new abortion restrictions in Texas isn't Austin - it's Denton. Following the closure of Jacob's Well this week comes the closing of Hamilton Pool, also due to high bacteria levels in the water. Meanwhile, after months of pleading for new lifeguards, some of them have not been getting paid on time by Austin's Parks and Recreation Department. Austin's Music Commission is requesting that the City Council expedite the deployment of the Live Music Fund to an earlier date than the one currently planned, next July. Stream Realty Partners, the company heavily invested in revitalizing East 6th Street has unveiled plans for new live music venues in several spaces it controls, including the former Buffalo Billiards and Dirty Dog spaces. SXSW is planning an offshoot event in Sydney, Australia, in October of 2023 (it's spring down there at that time). Travis and Williamson counties both made U.S. News' new rundown of the 500 healthiest counties in the country - Collin County ranked highest in Texas at #50, and Williamson significantly outranked Travis, at #121 and #295, respectively. Thursday live music roundup for the weekend: Friday shows include album releases with Sir Woman album release at The Parish and Big Bill at Hotel Vegas, a TC Superstar tour kickoff show at Cheer Up Charlie's, Bigg Robb at Antone's as part of their 47th Anniversary run, and a Nancy Griffith tribute show at the Cactus Cafe. Saturday catch Antone's anniversary fun with Jimmie Vaughan, a heavy 2nd Anniversary party at Hold Out Brewing with Holy Death Trio and Eagle Claw, and Los Pendejos del Norte featuring Ed Miller of Sun Radio and Rich Brotherton of the Robert Earl Keen band at New World Deli. Sunday Fleet Foxes are at Waterloo Park's Moody Amphitheater, and the Antone's anniversary features Miss Lavelle's Birthday Bash. And Monday the 4th, Willie Nelson's 4th of July Picnic rolls into Q2 Stadium for the first time with Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit, Tyler Childers, Allison Russell, Steve Earle & the Dukes, and tons more. Austin weather: a tropical disturbance in the northwestern Gulf Of Mexico is expected to dump rain on the Texas coast, and there's hope some of that will come our way, but officially our rain chances for this week are dropping and our hopes for significantly cooler temps are fading too. Highs Thursday and Friday of 96, rain chance now down to 20% for Friday. We're back to upper 90's by Saturday, and then back to what looks like a long string of triple digit days starting Tuesday.
If you know, you know. To simply call this one a “show” is insufficient. Perhaps…a vibe, honoring all moods, styles, fashion, artistic expression from the darkest recesses of the spectrum. Soon after a serendipitous meeting in 2009, Maggie Lea and Tamra Hoover became partners not only in life, but also in business. Maggie teamed up with Tamra to transform her food truck turned brick-and-mortar bar, Cheer Up Charlie's, into one of Austin's favorite queer hangouts. It became a place where LGBTQ folks could be unapologetically themselves, enjoy a few drinks and listen to good music. On any given night, there was an almost palpable sense of joy and togetherness buzzing in the atmosphere. Suddenly, life threw a curveball — Maggie received a diagnosis that would change her life. The Cheer Up community rallied around her, setting up a GoFundMe page for her treatment. Maggie emerged victorious in time for a second curveball— the pandemic. During the year of uncertainty and financial struggle that followed, Maggie and Tamra dreamed of how (and if) they would bring Cheer Ups back to life in a way that allowed people to heal and feel whatever they needed to feel. At it's core, Cheer Ups remains a valuable space created for the queer community of Austin— a community that will fiercely carry them through into the future.Learn more about Maggie Lea & Cheer Up Charlie's: http://www.cheerupcharlies.comLearn more about GoDaddy: https://www.godaddy.com

We're taking a break from the news this week to celebrate the holidays, so instead we have a Christmas Special for you!
We are firmly into the festive season now, with supermarkets blaring Christmas songs and lists being checked twice. Continuing our Christmas capers, we watched two more classics, the movie that goes by a thousand names, ‘Dr Seuss' How The Grinch Stole Christmas' (2000) and the movie most people think of when you say ‘Christmas movie'; ‘It's a Wonderful Life' (1946). We naturally manage to veer off-topic to talk about our favourite topics (sport and Catholicism), but also our favourite hobby, skin care. Most importantly, we discover who The Grinch really is, and he's pretty close to home… . loop-pedal pop artist and Austin-based sound engineer, Sydney Wright. She releases her new single, "Time of Night" from he upcoming albumSeiche, today via idobi radio. Listen to the single HERE. Follow up to “You Can Stay” (August 2017), “Tip” (July 2018) and video, “Seiche” (May 2018), the single are from her upcoming album Seiche, due out November 9, 2018. Between her latest releases, Wright endured a harrowing experience on June 30, 2018: ahit and run accident in downtown Austin. Surviving several severe injuries and surgeries. including four rods in her right leg, screws in her ankle, a wrist splint, a compound ankle fracture, broken tibia, multiple wrist and lumbar fractures, Wright is still pressing on and releasing music throughout the Fall. After the accident, the Austin community came to her side. Wright was approached by The Health Alliance for Austin Musicians, and her friends and family started a Go Fund Me. Cheer Up Charlie’s, where Wright ran sound primarily is hosting a benefit show on September 29; Wanderlust, where she ran sound and booked Live Music Classes, hosted a benefit class in August. "It’s about Denton, Texas, where I graduated college. I met my best friends there. We went so hard, we were good at turning the weekday cares into that weekend flare,” Wright says of the song. There’s a powerful sense of peace and pure happiness in “Time of Night”. The synths move you and the (heart)beats skip as the vocals float overhead. “‘Time of Night’ is after the bars closed when we would stay out and keep visiting under the stars and streetlights on the town square.”
