I don't have extensive experience on the sea, but I've spent a bit of time in and around the ocean and other large bodies of water; enough to know what I bet you know too: it doesn't take much time out on a large body of water to be impressed by the immensity of it. When you're out in the middle of the water on a vessel that seems large from land, you suddenly feel very small. Imagine being surrounded in that same way, by an overwhelming knowledge of the glory of the Lord! Listen in!Habakkuk 2:14Do I have a solid grasp of the reality that a day is coming in which the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord, so much so that my heart can hold onto that hope, even in difficult times? Do I have a solid grasp of the reality that only the work that I do toward that end will endure beyond my lifetime? Is there a gentle invitation to my soul through this verse today? How will I respond?

Water is our lifeblood and Clean Water (along with Clean Air and Clean Soil) is one of our core Three Asks, the non-negotiable baselines that underpin a flourishing future for people and life on our planet. Getting there, means everyone beginning to care at a bone-deep level, way beneath our conscious minds and having a sense of how we might get there, supported by evidence of what works (or doesn't) so that we can create positive feedback loops of growing community between the human and Beyond-Human worlds. Living this into being is one of the core pillars of the Great Transformation and one of the groups working towards it is the River Dôn Project in Sheffield, one of the many projects overseen by Opus Independents. One of the project leads is Jonny Douglas, and he's today's guest.Jonny imagines a world where the vast majority of people have the means and opportunity to find and fulfil their true potential. He has worked as a designer, a trainer, educator and facilitator in human skills and creativity in universities, colleges, schools and businesses.  At Opus he is a Co-Founder and Network Coordinator of the UBI Lab Network and Technology Lead for the River Dôn Project, among other roles across the portfolio. He believes our only path forward is one of mutually assured flourishing and that now is the time to build those alternative realities, together. I met Jonny last July at the Social Enterprise Network Summer Conference in Sheffield and the conversation about the River Dôn Project was one of the single most inspiring, thought -provoking I have ever had. On the forty- fourth episode of All the Film Things, I had the pleasure of interviewing award- winning screenwriter/ novelist/ film director Steven Bernstein! Steven Bernstein has been working in the industry for nearly 40 years behind the camera, often as a cinematographer, under the direction of acclaimed filmmakers from Noah Baumbach to Patty Jenkins before directing his own feature films. He earned a Golden Lion at the Cannes Film Festival early in his career for working as a cinematographer on commercials in the UK. Steven has been the director of photography on nearly 50 films, some of which include critically acclaimed films Like Water for Chocolate (1993) and Monster (2003), and beloved comedies such as The Waterboy (1998) and White Chicks (2004). Alongside Emmanual Lubezki, Steven earned the Best Artistic Contribution Award at the Tokyo International Film Festival for his work on the 1993 film Like Water for Chocolate. Steven's directorial feature film debut, Decoding Annie Parker (2013), earned him The Alfred P. Sloan Feature Film Prize at the 2013 Hamptons International Film Festival and his sophomore directorial feature, Last Call (2017) was hailed as “Oscar- worthy” and earned lead actor Rhys Ifans the Best Actor award at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival. Steven also co-hosts, alongside Vince Grimes, the terrific and insightful weekly podcast “Filmmaker and Fan's” which you should all check out on the same platform you listen to ATFT on but here's the link to listen on Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/0cepNNzk8evxnNEAPUPXPX?si=33b9632bbe4a49e9 Steven's debut novel, a thriller titled GRQ: Get Rich Quick, was published on June 3 and has been continuously earning rave reviews so definitely buy yourself a copy now wherever books are sold, including Barnes & Noble through this link: https://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/grq-steven-bernstein/1147259290! This novella, which is set over the course of one day in a seemingly doomed Los Angeles that regularly faces natural disasters, follows Marlon who, unbeknownst to his wife, quickly tries to come up with the money needed to save the house from being repossessed leading him to make a dicey investment in cryptocurrency. GRQ, which is the first of a series in the works, ends with a surprising twist that provokes a lot of questions by considering what is important in life. GRQ: The Movie, which Steven directed based on his book, will be having a worldwide theatrical release later this year so I'll keep you all updated here on the ATFT Instagram on its release! This is Steven's first time on ATFT! We got connected on Instagram over a year ago through the comments under a post he made about the film 20th Century Women! This episode was recorded on May 29, 2025. In this episode, Steven talks about the films and filmmaker who made him fall in love with cinema, the film industry currently being in crises, and the technical, underlying ways to bring out a great performance as both a cinematographer and filmmaker. Steven also discusses the unique, visceral experience of cinema, working closely with Charlize Theron on the film that earned her an Oscar, what he hopes people take away from his films, and much more on the latest episode of All the Film Things! Background music created and used with permission by the Copyright Free Music - Background Music for Videos channel on YouTube.

What if the greatest stories of our lives are the ones we never meant to write? On today's episode, we welcome Steven Bernstein, a man whose journey through the world of cinema has been anything but predictable. A writer at heart, a cinematographer by accident, and a director by destiny, his career is a living testament to the art of surrendering to the unknown. From his early days at the BBC to the sets of Hollywood blockbusters, his story unfolds like an unplanned masterpiece—one that ultimately brought him full circle, back to the thing he always loved: writing. In this profound conversation, Steven Bernstein recounts his journey from philosophy student to award-winning cinematographer, where his love of storytelling found an unexpected home behind the lens. He speaks of the curious ways life moves us, sometimes against our best-laid plans. “You tend to go with those things that are providing you income,” he muses, reflecting on how a passion for writing gave way to cinematography, leading him to films like Monster, Like Water for Chocolate, and Scary Movie 2. Yet, even as he shaped light and shadow for some of cinema's most striking images, the writer within him never faded. There is an undeniable poetry in the way Bernstein describes his work. He doesn't just shoot a film; he composes it, layering meaning through framing, movement, and light. Every choice—a dolly push, a backlight, an asymmetrical composition—whispers something to the audience. It's a language beyond words, one that he speaks fluently. “Everything to do with film is a language,” he explains. “And like any language, it's made up of two parts: that which we present and that which we mean.”His journey back to writing was not an easy one. After years of crafting imagery for others, he took a leap into directing his own films, starting with Decoding Annie Parker. It was a lesson in risk and resilience. At one point, he spent five years in poverty, refusing to return to the safety of cinematography. “If you hold out for the dream, maybe you achieve it,” he says. It is a stark reminder that the artist's path is often one of sacrifice, but those who persist find themselves richer in ways beyond money.Yet, Bernstein also understands the tension between art and commerce. Filmmaking is an expensive endeavor, and investors want guarantees. He describes the struggle of balancing creative vision with financial expectations, a dance between inspiration and limitation. And yet, some of the greatest filmmakers—Terry Malick, the Coen Brothers, Charlie Kaufman—have defied convention, proving that the most resonant stories often break the rules. The conversation moves to the nature of collaboration, the unspoken alchemy that happens on a film set when everyone is in sync. He recalls moments from Monster, where the crew, sensing the gravity of a scene, chose to remain completely silent, whispering only when necessary. It was an unspoken agreement, an offering to the art being created. “It was one of the most magical moments I remember in any film I've ever worked on,” he recalls. It is a glimpse into the rare, sacred spaces where true storytelling happens—not in the scripts, but in the spaces between them.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/bulletproof-screenwriting-podcast--2881148/support.

It is a glimpse into the rare, sacred spaces where true storytelling happens—not in the scripts, but in the spaces between them.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/indie-film-hustle-a-filmmaking-podcast--2664729/support.

Deposits into this account are used to purchase 10 investment-grade and high-yield bonds. As of 9/26/24, the average, annualized yield to worst (YTW) across the Bond Account is greater than 6%. A bond's yield is a function of its market price, which can fluctuate; therefore, a bond's YTW is not “locked in” until the bond is purchased, and your yield at time of purchase may be different from the yield shown here. The “locked in” YTW is not guaranteed; you may receive less than the YTW of the bonds in the Bond Account if you sell any of the bonds before maturity or if the issuer defaults on the bond. Public Investing charges a markup on each bond trade. See our Fee Schedule. Bond Accounts are not recommendations of individual bonds or default allocations. The bonds in the Bond Account have not been selected based on your needs or risk profile. See https://public.com/disclosures/bond-account to learn more. Learn more about your ad choices.
