Fan favorites from UTOPiAfest, Shane Cooley and Lori Ellen sit down to perform two acoustic songs and share the dynamic and delightful stories of collaboration, songwriting, and recharging after live performances. Shane Cooley's nuanced lyrics stand at the forefront of his hauntingly alternative folk music. Cooley's newest album, Forest (released April 2022), continues to receive airplay and acclaim, both in the U.S. and internationally. “(Forest) stands out for its peculiar production and lyrical beauty, which is highly remarkable considering that Cooley himself played all the instruments and produced this work in its entirety,” wrote Javier Rodriquez of Right Chord Music. Lori Ellen is a folk singer-songwriter who transforms her shadow into light as musical alchemy and shares her song because "art is the way we transform into beauty." She delivers steady, polished vocals backed by raw honesty. Find out more about each of them at: https://www.shanecooley.com/music and https://www.loriellenmusic.com/

I've covered various topics and featured many wonderful and diverse guests on this podcast. As many of you know one of my favorite passions is music and seeing a vast array of musicians perform live. That's one of the reasons I moved to Austin. I've been lucky enough to become increasingly entrenched in the local Austin music scene. I'm excited to share my conversation with this week's guest, singer-songwriter Ali Holder. We exchange our take on the importance of vulnerability and our love for west Texas. Also we discuss our fears for impact of the exponential growth of Austin, and how that may effect its robust and vibrant music community. Ali has been compared to Patty Griffin and Lucinda Williams. In 1986, drug activist Rick Doblin founded the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies, commonly known as MAPS, as a non-profit organization specializing in research and education. MAPS has dedicated the last 36 years to changing the way people think of, talk about, and consume psychedelics through research, education, and advocacy. One of MAPS training certifications offers the Psychedelic-Assisted Therapies and Research Certificate Program for skilled therapists and researchers. Today's guest, Andrea Hanson, is one of those MAPS certified therapists able to provide psychedelic assisted therapy. Here is quick clarification. MAPS uses the term "psychedelic" to refer to both the classic psychedelics (LSD, psilocybin, peyote, ayahuasca, etc.) and to those drugs specifically termed "entactogens" and also known as "empathogens" (MDMA, MDA, etc.). Andrea is a licensed mental health professional, and I loved our conversation. I always want to present alternatives to consider for a holistic approach to wellness and healing and this is a good point to remind the audience that I am not a doctor, healthcare practitioner or therapist. What I share in today's episodes are some of my personal experiences and opinions around psychedelics. Andrea and I talk about the MAPS certification process, psychedelic assisted therapy using MDMA, psilocybin, and ketamine, the benefits of recreational, the concerns of therapeutic misuse, and the importance of integration. Andrea has her Masters of educational psychology in clinical mental health counseling and is a Neurobiological Breakthrough Specialist, Psychedelic Breakthrough. Complex Trauma and Addiction Expert. Her career and personal commitment has been reshaping the psychiatric and mental health fields. Connect with Andrea: AndreaHanson.net Be a part of this podcast! Welcome to The Vinyl Sessions, a combination of highlights from the 2022 episodes, and some new content centered around the art and influence of music. This time of year, it can be very difficult for many, myself included. Holidays are stressful in their own category. I still grieve the loss of my parents around this time of year and continue to process grief and loss of my mother, who passed in January 2021. Not a day goes by where I don't think of each of them and what they would want for me. And of course, I ask them for their guidance from above in my life and for whatever influence they can give to help my Georgia Bulldogs to victory on game day. I can struggle in processing my grief, but I know that I am not alone at this time of year. When I enter the “darkness”, music has been an uplifting medicine to keep me afloat, re-energize my body, and stimulate my mind. I love discovering new music, sharing new music, and talking about music. John Berendt, author of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (simply called “the Book” in my hometown of Savannah), was quoted as saying: Someone once wrote that musicians are touched on the shoulder by God, and I think it's true. You can make other people happy with music, but you can make yourself happy too. Because of my music, I have never known loneliness and never been depressed. So today, I want to share how my podcast guests over the past year have referred to music and its influence on their life, careers, and mental health. Enjoy this compilation episode of some of the highlights from the podcast this year. Be a part of this podcast! You may have heard or even personally experienced therapists and medical practitioners including tapping in their treatment of anxiety, depression, insomnia and PTSD. Today, we answer: How does tapping work? As an expert in the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) also known as Tapping, my guest today, Lauren Fonvielle offers a fresh perspective on what is keeping people feeling stuck both physically (with chronic pain) and emotionally stuck. The basic technique requires you to focus on the negative emotion at hand: a fear or anxiety, a bad memory, an unresolved problem, or anything that's bothering you. Our underlying beliefs and emotions—whether or not we're aware of them—can affect our happiness in life. Learning how to better manage our emotions and release any associated stress can be a complete game changer! Lauren is an EFT International Certified Practitioner. She joins me today to walk through the tapping technique that helps reduce anxiety and process emotions around trauma. Lauren offers the listeners a free masterclass: Intro to EFT/ Tapping for Anxiety and pain. In this class she'll talk about the science behind why tapping works, and you can be guided through a tapping sequence to experience it for yourself. You can get a glimpse into this technique if you are watching it on my YouTube channel. Watch it here: https://www.mindshiftwithlauren.com/masterclass I'm excited to share today's episode because in addition to her hands on instruction, Lauren shares the science behind EFT and the remarkable benefits observed for veterans in treating PTSD. Unlike many expensive medications and health treatments, tapping is less expensive and less time consuming. It gives you the power to heal yourself, putting your health back into your own hands. The 29th Annual Austin Film Festival brought an eight-day uninhibited and authentic exploration of story. It was a conference for like-minded creators and an opportunity to view independent films. I love discovering new films and putting myself into a director or screenwriter's shoes to dive into how a film is made and what aesthetic and casting decisions were determined. After watching the dark comedy and unconventional spy story, Checkout, starring Josh Pais, Dar Zuzuvosky, and Norman Issa, I had the opportunity to sit down with Artistic Director Jonathan Dekel for a great conversation on his filmmaking process, how-to cross-cultural barriers within a single film, and how Checkout was inspired by true Mossad stories. Checkout follows Dov, played by Josh Pais, and shows a desperate Mossad spy who's forced to retire yet goes rogue. I don't want to Iive too much of the story away, but I will say that if you have an opportunity to checkout the movie Checkout, I urge you to see it because it is fantastic. Welcome to the 50th episode of the Neurons to Nirvana podcast. It has been one year since embarking on this journey, and for new listeners as well as those priceless loyal friends and listeners, you know this year has been a year of transformation for me. The podcast has introduced me to creative and non-conventional thinkers and artists from all walks of life. And while taking the opportunity to share these stories with you, I've been able to discover new music, make new friends, and find new approaches to healing my own mind and soul. You've heard me say many times that I am a mental health advocate. I always want to provide options and alternatives to big pharma, and help people explore the possibilities of plant medicine, personal retreats, psychedelic-assisted therapy, holistic health, and with today's guest, Bo Bissett, through the muscle testing and pranayama breathing to process trauma foundational to his personalized program, Amo Ni. Bo's personal story is one of addiction, destruction and low-self worth until he himself found healing in breathwork and energy channeling. He tells his story as well as provides details of the Amo Ni program. I am currently in the Amo Ni program and have only begun to open my chakras to healing. For those of you who know personally how I have struggled to overcome grief and anger, including holding profound resentment to childhood events, you can appreciate that my progress is truly profound for friends and family members to already say that I have been calmer and more grounded. In an effort to expose the true value of art, Michaell Magrutsche joins me in a two-part discovery of humanity and the confines of systems. Michaell is an outside the box thinker, and he understands that without creativity there are no man-made systems and there would be no world as we know it. Austin resident and master of psychedelic funk, Kalu James, sits down with Tom to reminiscence about their fateful first introduction in the rugged mountains of Utah. Along the way, hear a journey of musical enlightenment, peek into Kalu's storytelling, and sit down with two friends who found their way together during a period of isolation. Kalu and the Electric Joint are considered one of the best bands on the Austin music scene right now. With their distinct sound, they have a vibrant live show that enhances their dynamic and uplifting songwriting. Kalu James sits down with Tom and shows his off stage persona as the two share stories of when they met, how their pandemic experience shaped them, and how their experience of moving to Austin has aligned (or misaligned) with their expectations. Texas Monthly has said Kalu and the Electric Joint “pulls Austin's sounds into the global diaspora: this is psych rock with more than a dash of Jamaican dub, Southern soul, and Nigerian funk.” Kalu James grew up the son of a village chief in Nigeria and moved to Austin to enmesh himself in the live music scene. He's been on the scene as a songwriter for years, and when he began a month-long residency at the Continental Club Gallery with another Austin mainstay, guitarist JT Holt, they both knew there was chemistry afoot. Their weekly shows would last nearly three years and along the way, drummer John Speice joined the party, officially forming Kalu And The Electric Joint. The Joint was originally an only-in-Austin conception. Now, they have released their debut album, to introduce the world to the blues-rock, American soul and African polyrhythms. Time Undone, recorded over the period of a year out in Driftwood, Texas, and produced by Brett Orrison (Black Angels, Widespread Panic) include guest stars from members of Widespread Panic, War On Drugs, The Sword and Grupo Fantasma, who all contribute to a soulful world groove. Enjoy Kalu and the Electric Joint's single Garden of Eden at the end of the podcast.
Regardless of what language you speak, music transcends geographies and Bombino's epic guitar shredding is a language I think all of us can appreciate. This week's podcast is the first ever bilingual episode with The Sultan of Shred: Bombino (born Goumour Almoctar, also known as Oumara Moctar) came of age during a time of significant political upheaval and fled with his family to Algeria after living in the nomadic Tuareg encampment Tidene, just outside Agadez, Niger. Bombino taught himself guitar by watching videos of his heroes like Jimi Hendrix. After years of honing his skills back home and spending time as a shepherd in Libya, he first left Africa and traveled to California in 2006 as lead soloist on tour with Tidawt. During his trip to California, he had the chance to record a desert blues version of the Rolling Stones classic “Hey Negrita” alongside Stones' members Keith Richards and Charlie Watts. He has released a highly acclaimed studio album, Deran, including one rave reviews from in the form of a full page feature in the New York Times which dubbed Bombino ‘The Sultan of Shred' Deran was nominated for Best World Music Album Grammy, the first-ever Grammy nomination for an artist from Niger. His latest album, 'Live In Amsterdam' was was released in November 2020. Bombino held the center stage at Worldfest and it was an honor to sit down with him to discuss his life, travels and musical inspirations. He is an advocate for teaching children the Tuareg language of Tamasheq, the local Haoussa language as well as French and Arabic, all of which he speaks fluently. Sadly, I am not fluent in any of these four languages so you will us sit alongside one another while we share stories via the assistance of a French translator. Niki J Crawford and her band bring the heat with a high-energy soul get down. There is undeniable energy hitting the airwaves on this week's podcast. You can feel her Soul, Funk, and R&B sound. Niki and the band members have shared the stage and have played with Carlos Santana, Snoop Dogg, Al Green, Macy Gray, The Roots, and Keb Mo just to name a few of the performers who have sought out her talent. She has performed on various late-night TV shows such as Jay Leno, David Letterman, Conan O'Brien, and Saturday Night Live. Making her way from the small country town of Springhill, Louisiana to Los Angeles, Niki is a triple threat: powerful vocalist, imaginative screen and songwriter, and stunning actress. Niki sat down with me after the California Worldfest to bring her signature southern charm, and probably the best compliment I could share with you is that sitting down with Niki feels like being home in Savannah, Georgia. Welcome back to our third episode featuring artists who performed at the California Worldfest. During this episode, it is pleasure to introduce you to the music and spirit of The Gold Souls. The Gold Souls burst on the Sacramento music scene in early 2017 and are one of the most promising new talents in the area. Not only do they bring driving grooves of funk and rich textures of soul, they also deliver captivating lyrics and fresh arrangements with a vintage sound. One such track that captures this dynamic sound is their recent release, ‘94 Chevy. It is featured in the interview. At Worldfest, I sat down with the dynamic and lovely lead singer Juniper Waller and also with their kind and clever drummer, Billy D. Thompson. Unfortunately, we don't get to meet every member, but as you listen to their music, know that each member has a hand in writing and song composition, making The Gold Souls a truly collaborative effort. The band has toured all up and down the West coast, as well as through New Mexico, Texas, Arizona, and New Orleans. Visit their website thegoldsouls.com for tour and release information. They perform an exciting live show that you'll want to catch. This episode kicks off a series with musicians who recently performed at the California Worldfest. During this episode and the next six episodes, you will hear background noise from the festival, and in some cases, you can join along in the experience with video on YouTube. Today's guests were a treasure to meet, and it is a delight to introduce you to two duos, Brightside Blue and Honey of the Heart. These duos began collaborating and performing together, and their integration in life and on stage emits a peaceful energy. Blue Honey –a name they have been trying out to represent their collaboration, are as much a representative of the eclectic and peace seeking characters who call Nevada County home as they are a hidden gem in the music industry. You'll hear Honey of the Heart's song Corazon and Brightside Blue's song Mama, both of which are available for streaming, purchase, or download on bandcamp or Spotify. https://honeyoftheheart.com/ https://brightsideblue.com/ Please like, subscribe or follow this podcast on your preferred listening platform, and if you are even more ambitious, it would mean so much to me if you would complete a very short survey on how to shape future episodes of the podcast. For many Double Blind Media is the definitive resource for psychedelic education and community building and on today's episode I interview Co-Founder and CEO of Double-blind Media Shelby Hartman. Shelby shares her personal experience with psychedelics, her thoughts on Micro vs. Macro dosing, and how Double Blind offers courses for people who are just beginning to explore psychedelics and those looking to go deeper in their healing journeys. We also discuss that psychedelics are not a cure-all and are not necessarily the right solution for everyone. Shelby further stresses the importance of using Double Blind as the premier resource to determine what might be the best approach. Double Blind began as a print magazine launching in 2019 based on an idea with minimal resources. Since its inception, Double Blind has evolved into a Media Company and education platform at the forefront of the rapidly growing psychedelic movement. Cannabis Pioneer, Forbes Contributor, and recent guest of Neurons To Nirvana Podcast dubbed Double Blind Media as the Master Class of Psychedelics! The impact of moving our body on our mental health is undeniable, but the hardest part of the struggle sometimes is getting out of bed. For me, that's particularly difficult because I really struggle most nights to even get a decent night's sleep. My guest today, Christine Coen has been there too, and she has channeled her challenges into a nutrition and wellness program supplemented with a weekly podcast to help people like me who struggle with anxiety and depression discover our Inner Warrior. If you have listened to my most recent podcast episodes, you have heard my support of psychedelics to enhance creativity, treat depression, and treat pain and anxiety. Today, I'll share my conversation with Christine on how her life has been transformed by the power of movement and nutrition. In November 2021, I attended the Meet Delic conference in Las Vegas where my guest Laura Dawn was a keynote speaker. Meet Delic is a conference for psychedelic wellness and entrepreneurship. Laura Dawn is the host of the Psychedelic Leadership Podcast and is on the forefront of the movement between psychedelics, visionary leadership and creativity. While attending the Meet Delic Conference, I witnessed first-hand how inspiring and engaging Laura is as a speaker as she challenged the audience to see parallels in the psychedelic experience and finding our own creative channels. Laura Dawn is an advocate, author and international speaker who has been leading transformational retreats for over a decade and is passionate about reframing the narrative about what it means to be creative. In this episode, Laura and I discuss many intriguing topics surrounding psychedelic leadership, creativity, plant medicine integration, and some key clarifications around benefit sharing versus the concept of reciprocity. It was a real pleasure in today's remote recording world to get an opportunity to actually sit down in person in the studio with Laura. I was grateful to hold a genuine space for creative thinking and receive one another's energy during our engaging conversation. If you are interested in watching this podcast, you view this episode on my Neurons to Nirvana podcast channel on YouTube. Laura is helping to re-define and explore entrepreneurship as well as expand our thoughts on psychedelics through a new lens. She challenges mainstream assumptions and perpetually re-invents herself. Laura has a way of commanding the stage and it is clear how much passion she has in facilitating and re-shaping the narrative around creativity. For more info about Laura and her work listen to her Psychedelic Leadership Podcast at www.lauradawn.co which features many enlightening topics as well as many of the most influential leaders in the movement. Cannabis pioneer, co-founder of the non-profit medical cannabis dispensary Harborside, Weed Wars reality TV star and Forbes Contributor Andrew DeAngelo speaks about a variety of topics related to plant medicine and cannabis legislation. One of his most passionate advocacy positions is to free every prisoner that has been incarcerated unjustly for cannabis and in many places where it has been decriminalized or in fact now even legal through the Last Prisoner Project. His mission stems from a very personal family experience and it conveys how our personal experiences fuel an unrelenting persistence to advocate for change. Andrew is an exceptional individual who has made it his mission in life to help others navigate the confusing regulations and commercial aspects around cannabis. Andrew has an important call to action for all of us on ways to get involved from the grassroots education, to voting, to personal entrepreneurship. Even if you may not believe in cannabis decriminalization personally, I ask that you keep your mind open as Andrew provides a powerful playbook on how to have a successful advocacy and involvement program in how to invoke change on any single issue that you might be very passionate about currently in today's very polarizing cultural and political climate. Andrew's is cannabis, and after you listen to our discussion, I believe you'll understand why exactly. What does it mean to be a Utopian? After twelve years, attendees of UTOPiAfest celebrate mind-blowing musical performances, breathtaking West Texas Hill Country sunsets and dark skies showcasing the Milky Way. In this first of several Discover UTOPiA episodes, I interview founder Travis Sutherland, and creative mastermind Wayne Dalchau. UTOPiAfest encompasses the best aspects of the festival experience: great performances, musical discovery, quality time with new and old friends, and a true alternative and escape from the large festival scene. In April, I went backstage to hear from the musicians about what UTOPiAfest actually meant to them. There are great songs and stories that you can only hear on the Discover UTOPiA episodes.
