On this episode of the Ramble we meet Richard Norris to hear about his memoir of a lifetime in music, Strange Things Are Happening. The book spans the entirety of Richard's career from an early pivotal meeting with John Peel, via the birth of Acid House to Californian adventures with Joe Strummer. But Strange Things Are Happening is much more than a series of anecdotes. At its heart are a series of reflections on forty years of creative practice, a lifetime of collaborations and innovations in music that have brought countless people together. It is written with a rare grace, never shying from accounts of relationships imploding or ideas that don't make it. But above all else there is a deep sense of love here for the creative act and a gratitude for a life well lived.Strange Things Are Happening is published by White Rabbit Books and is a huge recommend.Richard Norris lived the 20th century and beyond like no one else and this is one of the truly great eyewitness accounts of the heroic years of the counterculture.'David Keenan@fieldzine /www.fieldzine.com

Joe McGrath is well known within the music industry and is an accomplished producer, and recording/mix engineer who leads the team at Hellfire Recording Studio Dublin. His ability to put people at ease, combined with brilliant technical skill has led him to work with a diverse list of acclaimed artists including Republic of Loose, Mary Coughlan, Hypnotic Brass Ensemble, The Coronas, Johnny Mc Evoy, Loah, Stano, Fields, David Keenan, Wyvern Lingo, Niwel Tsumbu, and Yankari to mention but a few. Joe studied acoustic design and has sat on the Programmatic Review panel for the Certificate, Diploma, and Masters courses in Music Technology at the Dundalk Institute of Technology. He designed the vast majority of the acoustic spaces in Hellfire Studio. His understanding of live rooms and how to quickly manipulate acoustics allow him to capture sonics that bring out an artist's originality. Acoustics and recording are Joe's passions and live recording is Joe's specialty. A session with him is performance-driven, keeping creativity and individuality center stage, whilst also being productive and fun. “Collaboration to realize artistic visions” is what Hellfire Studio stands for to Joe. Producing for artists, working alongside engineers such as Rob Kirwan (Hozier, PJ Harvey), Ger Mc Donald (U2, Manic Street Preachers) and engineering for producer/composer Valgeir Sigurðsson ( Bjork, Feist, Sigur Rós) on Mary Couglans powerful “A Woman Undone” – has given him the insight and attention to detail to make great records and set the standard for Irish recording and production. Adam has been re-reading David Keenan's historical biography on the rise of Industrial Music, England's Hidden Riverse, after it was re-published with extended material over the summer. That book primarily looks at the rise and legacies of Coil, Nurse with Wound, and Current 93 (and suspiciously, only passingly mentions Douglas Pearce and Death in June.) There is also, however, a plethora of material dedicated to William Bennett and what led the British artist to create the pioneering power electronics project Whitehouse. Formed by Bennett in 1980 and joined by Philip Best in the '80s and Peter Sotos in the '90s, Whitehouse developed both the sound (throbbing bass, ear searing and abused synths, washed out white noise, brutal and screamed vocals) and content (power, abuse, serial murder, war crimes) of the style that we now call power electronics. Though PE has since given us several iconic artists and acts — Con-Dom, Grey Wolves, Genocide Organ, and Ramleh among them — there is still something about the conceptual rigor, thematic depth, and historical mythos of Whitehouse that makes the group an enduringly fascinating area of study. To discuss the legacy of Whitehouse as well as the philosophy and history of industrial music, Adam and Will converse with friend and noise musician Xylon Genesis Otterburn, back for the second time on the show. David Keenan turned from music journalism to writing relatively late in his career - but did something unusual with his first book. After completing it, David Keenan fulfilled a vow he'd made to himself - and destroyed it. Not just by pushing delete - he took a hammer to his laptop. That was, he says, when the writing truly began. His award-winning debut novel, This is Memorial Device is set in the post-punk scene in his hometown of Airdrie in Scotland, based on a fictional band that has its own legion of fans in real life - and even a beer named after it. His second novel For the Good Times, set during the Troubles and influenced by his father and uncles' experiences in Belfast, made the Booker long-list. He quickly followed that with Xstabeth, Monument Maker and Industry of Magic and Light. Music trips through all his work - as it turns out, he has a real passion for New Zealand music - citing The Dead C as one of his favourite bands. He's in New Zealand for three events at Christchurch's WORD festival, which began on Wednesday and runs through the weekend.

Our intrepid guide on this journey is Scottish writer David Keenan, a literary and musical polymath known for his innovative contributions to the UK cultural scene. Born in April 1971, Keenan has worn many hats, from running Glasgow's iconic record shop, Volcanic Tongue, to shaping the dialogue around experimental music genres in The Wire magazine. The amazing Scottish multi award winning author David Keenan enters Green Sunrise Podcast alongside beautiful friend Brother Joseph and I also get a massive help from our new beautiful co-host Brian Mitchell who has been gagging to make his entry to the podcast. A chat with 3 awesome guys and myself, we talk about music from artists like Perry Como and how music helped David shape his story telling with some Como therapy, stories from each guy and their upbringing and how magical the meeting with Mary Hannah and other characters born from David's novels. Brother Joseph says he writes books the way Andrew used to mix music. The guys also make a special tribute to Andrew James Weatherall https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_...and they tell us stories of how he impacted their life personally. This episode was always going to be excellent and I knew at points it would always make us feel rather vulnerable to talk as we discuss how being at funerals can bring out great memories and that the passing of loved ones can help us actually celebrate a persons life. It seriously brings me so much joy getting to welcome another artist from Ireland onto the podcast. David Keenan is a singer-songwriter who in many ways is an unabashed maverick. His arrangements and singing styles tend to go against the conventional structures of western pop music, and yet his music still has an accessibility factor that allows his art to be embraced by the masses. The thing that's impressed me the most about David's art is how he's achieved this without ever compromising his vision; which is part of what we explore on today's podcast. How does our need and desire for art shift in a time when the world is in utter disarray? We also chat in-depth about the difficult yet liberating work that comes with making a body of work that reflects who you are (in the form of David's second album ‘WHAT THEN?' and his upcoming third album, Crude (which will be out on November 11th). We also have a talk about David's friend/bandmate, Gar Kane, who sadly passed away in October 2020. In tribute to Gar's life, David wrote/released a song called His Name Was Gar Kane, which you can find via Bandcamp. Be sure to purchase the song, since all proceeds go to Gar's widow and children.
David Keenan's Industry of Magic and Light transports readers to the Scottish town of Airdrie in the 1960s and 70s, through a catalogue of relics from the local counterculture scene — or as the small ad describes it “Bunch of Local Hippy S**t for Sale. Job lot”. Expressed narrowly, the novel tells the story of the purveyors of a revolutionary psychadelic light show. But there's nothing narrow about David Keenan's books. Through this portrait of a band, we get to know a town, its inhabitants, their fascinations, their beliefs, their trips, and how it all hangs together—socially, culturally, cosmically.… Like all of Keenan's books, it's a ferocious ride of a novel that demands to be read at least twice to get any kind of grasp — which is no burden at all, given how much fun it is to spend time in his world. Cult author David Keenan tells us about his astonishing, cryptic novel of occult hippiedom Industry of Magic And Light. And we've got big news for all listeners… plus a lot of new music, TV and movies to tide you over the autumn. “My father was illiterate, but he could tell the most amazing stories. He had such faith in language and told me ‘You need to read, it'll change your life'.” – David Keenan “Making a film about Bowie without mentioning his prodigious intake of cocaine is a bit like mentioning Maradona without mentioning the football.” – Andrew Harrison “Moonage Daydream doesn't feel like a sellout or a museum piece. From Belfast, Wendy Erskine has been called the greatest short story writer of her generation, by David Keenan no less. She has just published her second collection of short stories entitled Dance Move, and I was really lucky to be able to chat to her last month around the time of publication. Wendy has kindly put together a short playlist to go along with these episodes (see show notes). We started our conversation by talking about the first track in her playlist, but we then veered off in various directions. We do circle back to it in part two of this conversation, which will be available next week. This week we discuss Wendy's writing methodology, how music inspires her work, her ideal word count, the complexity inherent in her depiction of characters and how to end a short story. Along the way our conversation takes in Chekhov, Throbbing Gristle, Jacques Brel, George Eliot and Raymond Carver, among many others. Please note: while we try to avoid spoilers, if you haven't read Wendy's work before please be aware we do discuss many stories, and Dance Move in particular, at length.Show Links:Wendy Erksine playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/4fpH3KP5eIjafUxMRSKSvH?si=4kKrPqGpTBegPFfbk9inpg&nd=1Dance Move: https://stingingfly.org/product/dance-move/Chekhov's Gun: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chekhov%27s_gunSupport Ukraine:https://www.dec.org.uk/appeal/ukraine-humanitarian-appeal Hosted on Acast. Since then we have been lucky enough to sit down with David to talk about his critically acclaimed debut album 'A Beginner's Guide To Bravery', and now his follow up album 'WHAT THEN?'. In the lead-up to the new album Keenan went through somwhat of a personal transformation, and so we spoke about him putting himself together again, falling in love with writing again, identity and balance, expanding his sound on the new album, being honest with himself in his lyrics, and a lot more! It's time for our annual look at what we've been reading over the summer break. John, Andy and Nicky discuss David Keenan's fourth novel Monument Maker; Open Water, a promising debut novella from Caleb Azumah Nelson; Deborah Levy's three-volume ‘living autobiography', Things I Don't Want to Know, The Cost of Living and Real Estate; a reissue of Percival Everett's satirical diatribe Erasure; Life With a Capital L, Geoff Dyer's selection of essays by D.H. Lawrence; and Vivian Gornick's The End of the Novel of Love and Unfinished Business, in which the author re-reads favourite classic books and comes to fresh conclusions about them. All these titles can be purchased from the Backlisted bookshop at https://uk.bookshop.org/shop/backlisted.

In this episode, I had the pleasure of talking to Charlie Abbott, a member of Arco Arena, an up & coming band from Dundalk. Formed in early 2015, Arco Arena is an Irish four-piece riff-rock band from the currently vibrant music scene of Dundalk, County Louth which has to date spawned such up-and-coming Irish artists such as AE Mak, David Keenan, and Just Mustard. Mixing shifting time signatures with straight-up hooks, described as Queens Of The Stone Age crossed with Northern Irish post-rockers And So I Watch You From Afar their frenetic live shows are a rolling cascade of starting-never-stopping riffs and crowd singalongs. They've performed in prestigious venues all over Ireland from The Spirit Store in Louth and the Roisin Dubh in Galway to The Workmans Club in Dublin. With the release of their latest single ''Docker Martins'' the future looks extremely bright for Arco Arena in 2020 Arco Arena Instagram https://www.instagram.com/arcoarenaband/?hl=en Blah Blah Studio Instagram https://www.instagram.com/blahblahstudio_ www.blahblah.ie
We're back from the Port Eliot Lit Festival in Cornwall and this week, we'll be sharing our interviews of the musicians and writers we met there. For our first installment, we sat down with legendary DJ/producer Andrew Weatherall and Scottish author and musician David Keenan. Inside a little caravan getting pelted by rain somewhere in a field in Cornwall, we talked about their latest work, their inspirations, and a life dedicated to music and art. For your listening pleasure, we've closed the episode with “Evidence the Enemy” from Andrew Weatherall's upcoming album Qualia.
Today's guest on this special edition of The Quietus Hour podcast is writer David Keenan. David has been, at various times, an independent record label boss, a contributor to The Wire and Melody Maker, the author of England's Hidden Reverse, a musician, a record store owner and a published poet. Well, he can now add novelist to the list, as this week sees the publication of his debut for Faber, This Is Memorial Device. It is a singular novel - and one of the best we've read at TQHQ in the last year. It's frequently hilarious and touching, while also being an uncomfortably precise portrait of the often inward looking world of underground music fandom, that has its own distinct voice while also echoing David Foster Wallace, the Irvine Welsh of Trainspotting and Alan Warner. The action of the novel is set in Airdrie, Lanarkshire, in the early 80s and is told from the point of view of several characters in and around the mythical post punk band, Memorial Device. David talks about the genesis of his novel, the problems of forming a band with only mannequins as members and gives us the insider's view of the night his former band 18 Wheeler supported Oasis at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in 1993. But not only that he picks all of the music which stretches from Felt to Whitehouse via an Italian punk band called Tampax.
