fWotD Episode 2399: Revolutionary Girl Utena Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of the featured Wikipedia article every day.The featured article for Wednesday, 29 November 2023 is Revolutionary Girl Utena.Revolutionary Girl Utena (Japanese: 少女革命ウテナ, Hepburn: Shōjo Kakumei Utena) is a Japanese anime television series created by Be-Papas, a production group formed by director Kunihiko Ikuhara and composed of himself, Chiho Saito, Shinya Hasegawa, Yōji Enokido, and Yūichirō Oguro. The series was produced by J. C. Staff, and originally aired on TV Tokyo from April to December 1997. Revolutionary Girl Utena follows Utena Tenjou, a teenaged girl drawn into a sword dueling tournament to win the hand of Anthy Himemiya, a mysterious girl known as the "Rose Bride" who possesses the "power to revolutionize the world".Ikuhara was a director on the television anime adaptation of Sailor Moon at Toei Animation in the 1990s; after growing frustrated by the lack of creative control in directing an adapted work, he departed the company in 1995 to create an original series. While he initially conceived of Utena as a mainstream shōjo (girls' anime and manga) series aimed at capitalizing on the commercial success of Sailor Moon, the direction of the series shifted dramatically during production towards an avant-garde and surrealist tone. The series has been described as a deconstruction and subversion of fairy tales and the magical girl genre of shōjo manga, making heavy use of allegory and symbolism to comment on themes of gender, sexuality, and coming-of-age. Its visual and narrative style is characterized by a sense of theatrical presentation and staging, drawing inspiration from the all-female Japanese theater troupe the Takarazuka Revue, as well as the experimental theater of Shūji Terayama, whose frequent collaborator J. A. Seazer created the songs featured in the series.Revolutionary Girl Utena has been the subject of both domestic and international critical acclaim, and has received many accolades. It has been praised for its treatment of LGBT themes and subject material, and has influenced subsequent animated works. A manga adaptation of Utena written and illustrated Saito was developed contemporaneously with the anime series, and was serialized in the manga magazine Ciao beginning in 1996. In 1999, Be-Papas produced the film Adolescence of Utena as a follow-up to the television anime series. The series has had several iterations of physical release, including a remaster overseen by Ikuhara in 2008. In North America, Utena was initially distributed by Central Park Media starting in 1998; the license for the series has been held by Crunchyroll since its 2023 acquisition of Right Stuf and its subsidiary Nozomi Entertainment, which acquired the license for Utena in 2010.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:24 UTC on Wednesday, 29 November 2023.For the full current version of the article, see Revolutionary Girl Utena on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Joey Neural.

It’s time to ta- ta- ta- talk! At MTAC in Love, we got the rare opportunity to interview the king of games himself, Dan Green. Dan Green is an American voice actor, voice director and script adapter who has worked for 4Kids Entertainment, DuArt Film and Video, NYAV Post and Central Park Media. He is best known as the voice of Yugi Muto from Yu-Gi-Oh!, Trudge from Yu-Gi-Oh! 5D’s, Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic X and some of the Sonic the Hedgehog video games, and is also known for his script adaptions of Kurokami: The Animation and Mobile Suit Gundam Unicorn. This was Dan’s first appearance at an American anime convention to date. OSMnotes We want to give a gigantic thanks to both Dan Green and MTAC for the chance for the interview. And since it was more press conference style, we were’t the only ones there asking the questions! You also heard questions from John and Charlie from the Chainsaw Buffet, as well as Andrew from A Man and His Pod, among others. So big shout outs to them as well. Next week will be our traditional recorded late at night with Chainsaws MTAC podcast that I’m sure everyone is excited for!

Hell yes it's "engaging!"Oh Animerica, the world is a sadder place without you. Since out last podcast was on stuff that was really new, we decided to check out something that’s a little bit older. So in honor of Cinco de Eleven we talked about They Were Eleven*, an anime adaption of the manga by Moto Hagio. *Hey it was this or Ocean’s Eleven. Which begs the question, if they ever did a sequel using the same premise, would it have been called “They Were Twelve… No Wait, Still Eleven” followed by perhaps “They Could Have Almost Been Thirteen, But Nah! Still Eleven.” And the answer is actually no, it’s “Horizon of the East, Eternity of the West.” Color _me _disappointed. Musical Interlude: Koda Kumi – Taboo (Cynispin Remix)! Perhaps you have hear of Dou(gai)jin Recordings? That group of rag-tag brash musical reimagineers?  Well their leader, their Red Ranger if you will, is man known as DJ Cynispin. You can hear the full version of his track, and other awesome tunes in the Dou(gai)jin Recordings 2009 Promo EP. OSMnotes This is Makinami Mari Illustrious. Yeeeep. Like we said in the podcast, now that Central Park Media is gone this DVD is out of print. But you can still find it pretty cheap, if you act on it soon. So here are a few places to buy it.  Honestly between the six days ago when we recorded this and today’s release, prices on They Were Eleven and other CPM stuff have already started to go up. And this is a show that every one of you should have in your collection. Did we mention just how awesome Frol is? Frol is one of the most fun characters to watch do their “thing.” And by “thing” I mean “run around being onrey for onrey’s sake.” For a movie like this, good levity is key and Frol is some of the best at it. Keeping our promise, our pact, to you dear listeners you will note that we have to the side the images were talking about of Mari Illustrious Great Gatsby the III. See the wonders of her frog-like nature! Will she actually roll out with some form of awesome motorized wheel chair? Will said wheel chair also have it’s own AT Field? If so, will be represented in it’s eventual inclusion into some  Super Robot Wars game? The world may never know. But what we want to know is your opnions! Hence our latest contest: Four wheels of THUNDER! Or something, I dunno. The contest is easy! Simply send us an email at osmcast@gmail.com and tell us what you thought about the new Dragonball Evolution live action film. Perhaps you liked it! Or mayhap you hated it with a passion of a thousand suns. It could even be you are somewhere in between. Hell it can even be about the PSP game. No matter what the opnion is, we want to hear about it. To sweeten the pot, we are giving away two Dragonball Evolutionn posters. One is for our faveorite email, and the second will be an email picked at random. Once you get said poster, do with it whatever you desire. Put it on your ball, or burn it in effegy! We don’t care!

Yes, the hardest working Internet launched anime in history is coming Here's hoping this doesn't turn out to be another Azumanga Daioh...[Link] Also on 25th January just under 1/4 of a million people viewed the special ending of Haruhi from volume 7 of the Japanese DVD when it was posted up on YouTube. A quarter of a million people!?! Have these people no real lives!? Oh, wait. Sorry, wrong person to ask that question... [Link] Mushishi is being courted for a release of it's l;ive action version. God, I must have missed this when it first came out. So, on the podcast no offense was meant to Mushishi fans at all. Betcha one of parties interested in the film was ADV and another was Harmony Gold. I mean without any new licences, they only have Robotech to fall back on for profit. Right? Right!? RIGHT!?! Oh here's that link to Jo Odagiri's ANN page. [Link] Funimation announced they have the rights to Mushishi the anime, Ragnarok The Animation and Suzuka. OK, let's just hope they finally fix their subtitle problems this year....YEAH, RIGHT!!!Christ, I can't escape from Mushishi! And it's been given one of the worst re-titles for this year. BugMaster! (As Weevil Underwood(English Version)): Oh no, you've broken my Great Moth! We hate that voice actors take on Underwood. Also Funimation expand their programming block on their Funimation Channel. Now we can watch more DragonBall then ever before! [Link] Bandai Visual USA have said they will release Gunbuster 2[Link] Manga Entertainment have announced that they will release the Ghost In The Shell:SAC movie Solid State Society in July. Apparently they weren't brave enough to release it on Blu-Ray [Link]I've tried to find the article on Anime News Service about Blu-Ray outselling HD-DVD in Japan but as of the time of my writing this, I've had no luck...Any one who read it can email me the link at the usual address. YouTube and Google reps met with members of the The Japanese Society of Rights of Authors and Composers (JASRAC) and The National Association of Commercial Broadcasters in Japan. With literally hundreds of thousands of copyrighted clips of anime available on YouTube, JASRAC is starting to get nervous. What!?! They're only getting nervous now?!? The GITS DVD we were talking about can be found here but is now out of print. You might be able to find it on Yahoo.co.jp Auctions but it's up to you. And finally, as I promised here is the Wiki Entry on Pentacost Reviews Air Gear Huh? Where's the review? Sorry the section with Oni ran long so it's going to be next week before you can listen to Eeeper review this. Project A-Ko This amazing movie from 1986 remains one of Eeeper's favourite anime of all time and set a benchmark for parodies of anime and manga to come. Captain Harlock, Maison Ikkoku and Fist of the North Star are some of the titles that get poked to death in this treat. Eeeper goes all over the world for sport in this review before actually getting to the PLOT. Try and stay with him on this one, it does pay off. Central Park Media released this movie along with the OVA sequels comprising of the DVD volumes Love and Robots and Uncivil Wars. Oni watched Uncivil Wars but Eeeper didn't so only the first film and part of the OVA's are covered. This film was one of three VHS available to rent from 24-Hour Video in Eeep's hometown (the other two being Giant Robo Part One of the OVA and StreetFighter II: The Animated Movie) so it got serious playtime in the Eeep household. CPM page for Project A-Ko the collected edition Wikipedia page on A-Ko ANN page on A-Ko Ninja Scroll 10th Anniversary Edition Yeah! This kick ass movie from 1993 has it's flaws (no character devolpment for secondary characters for one thing) but it's getting the Manliest award from us. It may be replaced soon ( Mazinger Z and Getter Robo are on order) but for now bask in the glory of it's testosterone! The plot doesn't matter! After all it is a public safety service announcement from Yoshiaki Kawajiri. Oni has never tried to review anything before this so his review should be taken in the spirit in which it was approached. Which is the Spirit Of Vengeance. Go Ghost Rider! Wikipedia page for Ninja Scroll ANN page on Ninja Scroll Competition Time plus other stuffYep, it's our first give away and up for grabs is the first volume plus artbox of Fafner! Yeah I know it's an Evangelion rip-off but it's brainless, entertaining stuff anyway. The competition is open to all regardless of location. Only stipulation is that you must be able to play Region !
