In a boarding house full of eccentric tenants, is there room for love between a bumbling student and his grief stricken landlady? Well, if Yusaku Godai can't get out of his own way long enough to get into University, what chance does he have of ever winning the heart of the beautiful Kyoko Otonashi!?Often celebrated as Rumiko Takahashi's masterpiece, Maison Ikkoku trades the alien antics of Urusei Yatsura and martial arts mayhem of Ranma 1/2 for something more grounded—a slice-of-life romance that showcases her storytelling maturity.Join Mat and returning guest AC (our resident Takahashi Correspondent) as they discuss how this seinen story maintains Takahashi's signature style while breaking new ground. They'll unpack the series' incredible cast of characters, impeccable pacing, and how, despite having the least likeable main character of all Takahashi's works, they still find themselves rooting for romance between the frustratingly indecisive Godai and the emotionally guarded Kyoko! Thanks to Juliano Zucareli for our theme music!Find us on:X: Manga Tak PodBluesky: Manga Tak PodInstagram: Manga Tak Pod

It’s time to put weird together, and make it even weirder! It’s not just my imagination filling me with anticipation, because we’re talking about none other than Rumiko Takahashi’s planet-rocking hit manga Urusei Yatsura! And we have plenty of cause to celebrate, because we have passed the first year anniversary of the manga’s republication by Viz Media! This is an exciting time to be a Urusei Yatsura fan, and no better time to officially cover it on the show! Long-time listeners may remember that I previously recorded a spin-off podcast called #LumSquad last year where me and my friend AC discussed the first volume of Viz’s new omnibus edition and explored some of the series’ history there. But we always intended to cover Urusei Yatsura on Manga Mavericks as well, and we’ve got a great balance of first-time readers and long-time fans on today to talk about it; our good friend and frequent guest Vix, and first-time guest Dawn from the Anime Nostalgia Podcast! Together we discuss how we got into the series, mine and Dawn’s thoughts revisiting the early parts of the series, and Vix and Colton’s impressions as first-time readers. We also explore the differences between Viz’s original 90’s releases of the manga and the new editions, and Dawn shares anecdotes about AnimEigo’s release of the anime and being a UY fan in the early 90s! Plus, we rant about a certain inexplicable name change, gush over the possibilities of a modern UY anime, and share our favorite chapters from these early volumes! All in all, we spend over two hours celebrating the wonderful and wacky world of Rumiko Takahashi’s magnum opus! But wait, there’s more! If you’re looking for more thoughts on the Urusei Yatsura anime, check out the second episode of #LumSquad! AC and I explore the anime’s production history, how the show changes over its run, the incredible production staff and vocal talent on the show, and tons more! Just like this show, we spend over two and a half hours discussing the series, and we’ve barely even scratched the surface of what we wanted to talk about! Urusei Yatsura is a treasure trove offering a wealth of topics to explore, and I’m really excited to talk more about the series and everything I love about it in future episodes of #LumSquad! Sitting at its helm is Malaysian-born, classically-trained chef-turned-mixologist Ethan Leslie Leong.   Since his first big break in 1997 at the International Flair Competition in Birmingham, Ethan has nabbed more bartending awards, made his rounds in the nightlife circuit (https://www.buro247.sg/culture/buro-loves/buro-s-guide-to-the-best-clubs-party-nights-and-live-music-venues-in-singapore.html) as a bar manager in the ‘90s, and gone on to create cocktails for F&B establishments and brands including Chanel (https://www.buro247.sg/watches-and-jewellery/news/chanel-pre-basel-j12-paradoxe-j12-x-ray.html) , Mont Blanc, Guess, and Penhaligon’s (https://www.buro247.sg/beauty/news/penhaligon-hidden-london-limited-edition-collectio.html) .   Of course, there’s no easy road to success. From juggling different jobs at a young age to enduring multiple challenges in business, the cocktail maestro recounts the triumphs and adversities he has faced in the 10th episode of Buro.’s Brave Living with Simon Heng.   1:23 Background Born in Malaysia and raised by his grandparents, Ethan grew up in a kampong with 13 other children in his family. His father was murdered when he was just a baby. To support the household, his grandfather would do all sorts of odd, hard-labour jobs. Not fond of school, Ethan abandoned his studies and began working in a restaurant at 17.   7:40 Started out washing dishes While he was serving up to 100 tables every day in a busy restaurant, his mother gave him a one-way ticket and $300 to help him move on to the next phase of his life. His first job was at an American steakhouse, and his next was bartending at a rowdy discotheque frequented by gangsters.   21:32 Learning to speak English and going to Birmingham Having moved from Malaysia to Singapore abruptly, Ethan didn’t speak a word of English at the time. Nevertheless, he went ahead to compete in the world finals of a bartending flair competition in Birmingham. Held in a stadium with four giant screens and packed with over 5,000 spectators, Ethan came in 13th.   26:54 Job-hopping He returned to Malaysia to open his very own bar, but business was slow to pick up. To continue operations, he worked in Singapore to support the bar’s finances. Things turned around after some time, but to his dismay, his name was removed from the bar by his business partner.   37:25 Maison Ikkoku Never one to quit, he set up Maison Ikkoku in Singapore with another partner, where he crafted drinks using natural ingredients. He later became the main shareholder of Maison Ikkoku after parting ways with his business partner. Maison Ikkoku then evolved from a cafe to a restaurant-bar. Most recently, Ethan re-branded the ground floor of Maison Ikkoku with a new concept called SLING, which serves renditions of Singapore’s national cocktail alongside Peranakan dishes inspired by his childhood.

Maison Ikkoku Volume 14: Welcome Home by Rumiko Takahashi

Sesho's Anime And Manga Reviews

Manga Review for Maison Ikkoku Volume 14: Welcome Home by Rumiko Takahashi. Translated by Mari Morimoto. Adapted by Gerard Jones. This is for the first American edition printed in May 2000 by Viz in a flipped and slightly larger trade paperback size which sold for $16.95 which is out of print but still readily available used. The Maison Ikkoku series was reprinted unflipped in the now standard tankoban format by Viz with the addition of a fifteenth volume due to the differences in the page counts of the two editions. Rumiko Takahashi is known for letting the relationships between her romantic leads drag on for years or even decades without them ever evolving or being consummated (see Inuyasha), but as the last and concluding volume of Maison Ikkoku opens, Godai and Kyoko enter a love hotel. Godai should be in heaven, right? I mean, this is what he's always wished for. But things become a bit awkward when Kyoko says that she is thinking about Soichiro. Godai thinks she's talking about her dead husband, but Kyoko corrects him and says she meant her dog, which happens to have the same name. Is that the truth? Suffice it to say, Godai suffers from impotence at the moment of truth. Things get even more complicated when his ex-girlfriend, Kozue shows up wanting to talk about their relationship. She had already told him a guy proposed to her but she didn't want to say yes because she didn't want to hurt Godai's feelings. On top of all this Godai is going to find out how he did on the teacher certification exams. The only way he can ask Kyoko to marry him is if he passed, so there's a lot riding on the results. I have been reading this series off and on for a little over two years now and I have to admit I got a little misty eyed when I came to certain sections of this last volume. Simply because you never wish good things to come to an end. I used to have that experience a lot with anime and manga series, but it has become rarer lately, probably because there is so much product coming out that you don't have time to lament the end of one before you start another. Instead of just centering a review on this one volume, I'll just make some comments about the series as a whole because in terms of quality they were all about the same. The central conflict of the manga that lasted through the first to most of the last volume was the lack of courage Godai had to make Kyoko his. He bumbled his way through a relationship with Kozue and some childish competition with Mitaka the tennis coach but he was just never aggressive enough to pursue Kyoko with a single-minded determination. He was too wishy-washy. Kyoko too suffered a lot because she wanted to be pursued, hunted, and caught by an alpha male. While this kind of thing makes for a lot of heartache and tragedy in real-life, in the manga world it's the perfect tried and true setup for comedy. And boy was Maison Ikkoku funny!  One of the best comedies I've ever read. I've still never figured out how Takahashi was able to make such a masterpiece from such simple materials and operating mainly with character interaction rather than plot. To me, that's the hardest story to write. Making the lives of everyday people interesting and fun. It's also great to experience a relatively long manga series that has true resolution and ends on an upbeat and happy note. A great manga work. My Grade: A+

A quarter of a million people!?! Have these people no real lives!? Oh, wait. Sorry, wrong person to ask that question... [Link] Mushishi is being courted for a release of it's l;ive action version. God, I must have missed this when it first came out. So, on the podcast no offense was meant to Mushishi fans at all. Betcha one of parties interested in the film was ADV and another was Harmony Gold. I mean without any new licences, they only have Robotech to fall back on for profit. Right? Right!? RIGHT!?! YouTube and Google reps met with members of the The Japanese Society of Rights of Authors and Composers (JASRAC) and The National Association of Commercial Broadcasters in Japan. With literally hundreds of thousands of copyrighted clips of anime available on YouTube, JASRAC is starting to get nervous. What!?! They're only getting nervous now?!? The GITS DVD we were talking about can be found here but is now out of print. You might be able to find it on Yahoo.co.jp Auctions but it's up to you. And finally, as I promised here is the Wiki Entry on Pentacost Reviews Air Gear Huh? Where's the review? Sorry the section with Oni ran long so it's going to be next week before you can listen to Eeeper review this. Project A-Ko This amazing movie from 1986 remains one of Eeeper's favourite anime of all time and set a benchmark for parodies of anime and manga to come. Captain Harlock, Maison Ikkoku and Fist of the North Star are some of the titles that get poked to death in this treat. Eeeper goes all over the world for sport in this review before actually getting to the PLOT. Try and stay with him on this one, it does pay off. Central Park Media released this movie along with the OVA sequels comprising of the DVD volumes Love and Robots and Uncivil Wars. Oni watched Uncivil Wars but Eeeper didn't so only the first film and part of the OVA's are covered. This film was one of three VHS available to rent from 24-Hour Video in Eeep's hometown (the other two being Giant Robo Part One of the OVA and StreetFighter II: The Animated Movie) so it got serious playtime in the Eeep household. CPM page for Project A-Ko the collected edition Wikipedia page on A-Ko ANN page on A-Ko Ninja Scroll 10th Anniversary Edition Yeah! This kick ass movie from 1993 has it's flaws (no character devolpment for secondary characters for one thing) but it's getting the Manliest award from us. It may be replaced soon ( Mazinger Z and Getter Robo are on order) but for now bask in the glory of it's testosterone! The plot doesn't matter! After all it is a public safety service announcement from Yoshiaki Kawajiri. Oni has never tried to review anything before this so his review should be taken in the spirit in which it was approached. Which is the Spirit Of Vengeance. Go Ghost Rider! This Episode is like a good German beer: full of flavor, hearty, and filling. We manage a fine, interesting mix of news, a pair of quality anime reviews (one a drama, one a comedy, both for balancing effect), and the exciting conclusion to our Deb Rabbai interview. And unlike an imported beer, this Episode comes at a friendly economic price. :P Anime Review: "Neon Genesis Evangelion," "Maison Ikkoku" HotSpot: "Deb Rabbai Interview from Nan Desu Kan 2005 (Part Two)"
