Then it's time for a Byte-Sized Review of Stetson Kentucky Straight Bourbon. This new collaboration between Stetson, Green River Distilling Co., and Bardstown Bourbon Company is a 100-proof high-rye bourbon blended by Dan Calloway after a three-year sourcing and tasting process. With corporations getting ever larger – and even able to influence the outcome of presidential elections – the power of a single individual might seem lost. But it's alive and well.Sandy Rosenthal is an experienced community mobilizer, most notable for founding the nonprofit Levees.org, with 25,000 supporters nationwide. Her 2020 book, Words Whispered in Water, explores how she — against all odds — altered the national narrative about the deadly flooding in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. InWords Whispered in Water: Why the Levees Broke in Hurricane Katrina, Sandy gives a first-person narrative of the 2005 flooding and its aftermath, thrusting her into her role as a leading voice for fact-based responses to flood threats. She describes her transformation into an advocate for education on the history of flood control failures after Hurricane Katrina had moved inland, and her subsequent work as a watchdog tracking the responses of government and media in the hours, weeks and years after the floodwalls first gave way. A special Anniversary Edition of her book, featuring a new cover and foreword, went on sale in August 2025, timed with the 20th anniversary of the catastrophe.The catastrophic flooding of New Orleans in 2005 brought levees into the public consciousness. Yet, flooding now seems to be happening almost everywhere. The majority of the nation's population lives in counties protected by levees. Sandy's organization brings awareness to the dangers posed by this situation.Her organization has a strong physical presence in New Orleans, including the Flooded House Museum and the Levee Exhibit Hall at a major breach site. The organization has also installed three historic plaques vetted by the state's preservation office and hosts an annual levee breach bike tour, among other public education efforts.For these efforts, Sandy has received numerous awards, including Outstanding Social Entrepreneur of the Year from Tulane University and Most Influential Woman from Mount Holyoke College. She is an advocate for the 62% of the American population living in counties protected by levees.Rosenthal has been married to Stephen Rosenthal since 1979 and has three adult married children and two grandchildren. Jenna and Mark are excited to welcome Joel Sartore to the Cincinnati Zoo Tales Podcast to discuss the recent release of The Photo Ark: Animals of Earth (20th Anniversary Edition), out now.  In 2017, Sartore was at the Cincinnati Zoo where the ‘National Geographic Photo Ark' Exhibition was on display at the Cincinnati Zoo.    Over the last two decades, Joel has traveled the world documenting more than 17,000 animal species in zoos, animal sanctuaries, and more as part of the Photo Ark, one of the most ambitious wildlife photography projects ever undertaken. The project has inspired millions through books, exhibits, speaking engagements, and conservation partnerships.   Joel also discusses the upcoming opening of his brand-new exhibit Photo Ark: Animals of Earth at the National Geographic Museum of Exploration in Washington, D.C. Joel is also coming out with a new children's board book at the top of next month called National Geographic Photo Ark Bodies / Cuerpos, which introduces young readers to parts of the body through stunning photographs of animals from around the world, pairing each English word with its Spanish translation to help little ones build early vocabulary in two languages.

The Old Testament, Walter Brueggemann said, is an old text that simply refuses to stay old. "It reads like it was written yesterday." For him, God offers no artificial closure, but is active in the meantime, and at peace with the "unfinished." Walter Brueggemann died on June 5, 2025, at the age of ninety-two, and his own influence is unfinished. This episode is from the Conversing archives: a conversation Mark Labberton hosted with Brueggemann at Fuller Seminary for the 2015 Fuller Forum "Justice, Grace, and Law in the Mission of God." Brueggemann was an Old Testament scholar for the sake of the church, the author of over one hundred books including The Prophetic Imagination, and came to the Bible as a text-wrestler, "comfortable with collisions," taking the Hebrew text and his own life as an artist with equal and total seriousness. He describes his method of exegesis written longhand, "at the end of his pen," catching himself speaking the words as he writes them. Together they discuss the artistry of biblical language and why art is inherently subversive; Abraham Joshua Heschel on the suffering of God in Jeremiah; the pastor as scribe rather than prophet; the violence of God in the Old Testament and what it means to call it recovery; and justice as the "willingness to be inconvenienced." Brueggemann closes with Psalm 73: " Whom have I in heaven, and who do I desire on Earth but you?" Walter Brueggemann was the McPheeters Professor Emeritus of Old Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary. Episode Highlights A Scholar for the Church: "It took me a while to figure out that I wanted to be a scholar for the church and not for the academy … you wanna maintain your credibility in the academy, but it's not where you live." On the Old Testament: "It's so Jewish, and Jewishness means that it's conflicted and multi-vocal and multilayered and complex, and that's the nature of the text, and I think that's the nature of the God who indwells the text." On Subversiveness: "Art is inherently subversive because it wants to show us reality in a way that we have never before seen it … what we always wanna do with art or with the Bible is that we wanna cram it into the categories of the familiar." On Unfinishedness: "This is a God who stays faithful in the unfinishedness … in some ways, God isn't finished becoming God yet. So there is more light to break forth yet in our midst." On Fixing Everything: "Our society is about to forget what it means to be human in a technological, capitalist environment … The dominant value system of our society believes that everything can be fixed." Justice as Inconvenience: "I don't mind dying for Christ, but I don't wanna be inconvenienced … so much of justice work is just being inconvenienced." Tim Wheeler joins Mark Millar on the XS Noize Podcast to discuss Ash's landmark debut album 1977, its 30th Anniversary Edition, "Girl From Mars," "Goldfinger," Owen Morris, young fame, Northern Ireland and taking the album back out on the road. Originally released in 1996, 1977 turned Ash from teenage upstarts from Downpatrick into one of the defining guitar bands of the era. Featuring "Girl From Mars," "Goldfinger," "Kung Fu," "Oh Yeah," "Angel Interceptor" and "Lose Control," the album captured a young band moving at full speed — melodic, noisy, chaotic and full of life. In this conversation, Tim reflects on what it feels like to see 1977 turn 30, why the album still belongs to both the band and the fans, and how Ash managed to stay together when so many bands from that era did not. Tim also looks back on working with producer Owen Morris, who brought energy, chaos and confidence to the sessions. He talks about recording "Kung Fu," "Angel Interceptor," "Girl From Mars" and "Goldfinger," how Owen pushed the band in the studio, and why "Goldfinger" became such a major step forward for Ash as songwriters. The episode also explores the new 30th Anniversary Edition of 1977, including the B-sides, the long-lost track "Bittersweet Blue," the band's live STABAL performance, and why the B-sides from that era might be the strangest Ash album of all. Elsewhere, Tim opens up about the pressure of becoming successful at 19, having a number one album, appearing on Top of the Pops, touring the world, and trying to deal with the mental and emotional weight of dreams coming true while everything was moving too fast. Tim also discusses the Northern Irish identity in Ash's music, the humour, melancholy and resilience that helped carry the band through, the emotional pull of playing Belfast, and why the 1977 anniversary tour feels like a celebration rather than simple nostalgia. Miguel was joined on the Sports As A Weapon podcast by Dr. Gerald Horne and Anthony “Tony” Ballas to discuss the June 14, 2026 UFC “Freedom 250” event that was staged as an imperialist political spectacle by Donald Trump and Dana White. Dr. Horne, Anthony, and Miguel framed the spectacle as US imperial theater echoing “bread and circuses” and even late-stage Roman Empire decline. Additionally, Dr. Horne, Anthony, and Miguel discussed the parallels between Dana White and historic boxing promoters, fighter labor exploitation, and the event being used as a propaganda tool for US patriotism and militarization. Also, Miguel posed the question of alleged match-fixing amid the wider boom in sports gambling, crypto payments, and prediction markets, including the alleged leaked viral Twitter exchange between former UFC fighter and now commentator Daniel Cormier and Eric Trump. In the leaked message, Eric Trump sought insider betting information ahead of the UFC event. The episode conversation also links these dynamics to finance capital, media consolidation, and the crisis of US imperialism. Miguel, Dr. Horne, and Anthony also examined the UFC's new partnership with an AI military startup called Anduril and the normalization of AI within culture and warfare.
