Part two with Diana Schutz picks up right where the real war stories begin. This time, Diana pulls back the curtain on her Comico years , stepping into the editorial trenches at a publisher that, for a moment, looked like it was riding high. She talks candidly about the challenge of wrangling the Robotech comics line, but also the joy of editing Johnny Quest, working with the legendary Doug Wildey and the always inventive William Messner-Loebs. She breaks down why that book worked . Then comes the sobering part: Comico's collapse. Diana explains that it wasn't simply bad luck — it was a fundamental misunderstanding of how the newsstand distribution system actually operated. In the early direct-market dominance era, that mistake was fatal. A harsh lesson in the business side of comics that too many creative-driven companies learned the hard way in the '80s.From there, Diana recounts her earlier blink-and-you'll-miss-it four-day stint at Marvel Comics as an assitant editor for Ann Nocenti , working under Editor-in-Chief Jim Shooter. She doesn't hedge. The rigid, top-down editorial structure simply wasn't a fit for her. Diana closes this segment by giving heartfelt credit to her then-partner Bob Schreck for helping her land back on her feet, find new opportunities, and stay in the industry after some serious professional gut punches. It's a compelling look at the pitfalls of trying to survive the comic biz in the 80s and 90s. Part 3 tomorrow.

We're talking about the glory of war, or rather the hollowness of it. Not just war though but the symbols of power and violence associated with any kind of conflict, from something like a sword or pistol, all the way up to fighter jets, tanks and warships. These are all objects that viscerally symbolise power more than anything else, whatever appeal they have is rooted in their ability to enable their wielder to actively make changes in the world and set themselves above others. But why "hollow"? Because war, injury and the exercise of power over others is NOT sexy or at all glorious, rather it's the worst possible thing you can experience. We talk about that contradiction. War and violence is often sexualised, and I use that term correctly in this instance unlike the people who talk about the "sexualisation of women"- adult people are sexual by definition and cannot be "sexualised", what they actually mean is "eroticised", the distinction is important. How is war and violence sexualised? We gender weapons in obvious ways, relating them to male and female genitalia, we name them and refer to them in gendered ways, we also strongly associate war and weapon imagery with gendered things- think of Sylvester Stallone as Rambo, bare muscled, sweating chest, thick, shaggy hair, an M-60 machine gun cradled in one arm blasting away while a chain of ammunition is draped across the other. Or the actors in Top Gun being all young, handsome, virile men, playing beach volleyball shirtless. Sarah Connor in Terminator 2, rippling with muscle, expertly handling assault rifles. The recruits in Starship Troopers, male and female, hitting the showers together. Wonder Woman pulling a sword from the back of her evening dress… All this imagery ensures we associate the exercise of power with adult sexuality and virility. The superficial interpretation is to see power, weapons, and war as all "masculine", but that is inadequate and facile because the lust for power, it's use and exercise is not limited by gender in any way, it's only been skewed to the masculine through historical sexism. As a young person I was seduced by the glorious imagery of war and weaponry through TV shows like Robotech and Starblazers, animes that make a specific point of venerating giant weapons in the form of transforming fighter jets, beweaponed mecha, and massive space battleships bristling with guns. Then of course there were things like the sword wielding Conan, The Three Musketeers, Robin Hood, King Arthur, Asterix and Obelix and their powerful fists, and all the heroes in WW2 movies fighting the good fight. It wasn't till adulthood when I began to question the appeal and allure of these things and realise the darkness they actually represent. But even though I better understand it now, I also realise that the attractiveness of power imagery is baked into my brain so it will always strike a chord with me, which is why I'm always exploring both sides of the equation in my comic Piny TA. As Tantz says in the Quackcast though: "The way to win is not to play". Wise words for two reasons; the best use of any type of weaponry from swords, to guns, to fighter-jets, to warships, or even nuclear missiles is to only have them for the purpose of intimidation, if you can achieve your objective without ever committing violence and horror you've truly won because you didn't destroy resources, create further issues, damage your weapon, lose lives from either side, risk losing, or create many further complications and the risk of reprisal. The other reason is based on another interpretation: don't play, don't venerate the exercise of power through the use of war and violence focussed imagery and symbolism, then you won't perpetuate it. Have you ever been at all moved by "heroic" imagery, the power fantasy of holding a weapon, or the imagery of "righteous war"? Braveheart and Lord of the Rings are two that many love because of this topic. Read transcriptStrap in for the mecha of your dreams, or nightmares, because this week on Play Comics we're transforming, exploding, and fighting our way through the post-apocalyptic wastelands of Robotech: Invasion, the PS2 and Xbox shooter that said, “You know what would make the Invid Invasion better? A first-person perspective and the ability to pilot a motorcycle that also becomes battle armor!” (Spoiler alert: it actually kinda worked!) This gloriously ambitious action game takes the New Generation saga of Robotech and asks the most important question: what if we gave players the chance to save Earth from alien protoplasmic parasites while somehow managing to keep their sense of humor intact? Featuring FPS combat, transforming Cyclone vehicles, and enough environmental destruction to make any resistance fighter proud, this 2004 adventure proves that sometimes the best way to fight an alien invasion is to embrace the chaos and enjoy the ride. Joining us on this mecha-piloting expedition is the phenomenally talented Greg Sewart from the Player One Podcast, a man who's been dissecting video games with the precision of a Robotech technician since before most of us even knew what a Veritech was. When Greg isn't co-hosting one of gaming's longest-running podcast institutions with fellow ex-games journalists, he's crafting the delightfully nerdy web series Generation 16 where he breaks down the games that shaped an entire generation with the kind of passion that can only come from actually living through these gaming eras. And here's the kicker, Greg has intimate knowledge of Robotech: Invasion that'll make this episode more insightful than your average “let's talk about this old game” discussion. Here's a hint, he helped make it. Together, we'll explore how this game managed to capture the desperate, war-torn atmosphere of Earth under Invid occupation, puzzle through the quirky design choices (inverted camera controls, anyone?), and debate whether transforming on the fly between Cyclone and battle armor is the best or most ridiculous gameplay mechanic ever conceived. Did this game successfully honor the Robotech universe, or did it get a little too ambitious for its own good? How does it stack up against the PS2's library of anime-inspired action games? And most importantly is the level design actually good, or are we just nostalgia-blinded? Lock and load your favorite energy weapon, adjust those camera settings immediately, and prepare yourself for an episode packed with more robotic transformation sequences than an afternoon spent watching the New Generation arc! Learn such things as: Can a transforming vehicle system be both mechanically interesting AND narratively meaningful to the story? How does working within PS2 hardware limitations affect game design ambitions? Does it get awkward to ask someone how something that they helped create could be better? And so much more! You can find Greg on BlueSky @sewart.bsky.social, Threads @gregsewart, his YouTube Channel @sewart (where Generation 16 is on different playlists for different seasons so I'm linking to the main page), and of course the Player One Podcast. Top Gun with Mecha and reckless fighter pilots, involved in a love triangle involving a 4th party AI, ‘plus' the kitchen sink. Macross Plus is an anime film from 1995 based on the 4 part miniseries cartoon of the same name. This is a continuation from the Macross Franchise also called Robotech from the 80's.This Shōji Kawamori directed film is set in the year 2040, 3 decades after the previous situation with the war between Humans and the Zentradi Aliens. The three main characters are Isamu, Guld, and Myung who were high school friends on a planet called Eden, but after an incident that happened years prior they went their separate ways. Years later they met back up again, as the two boys were now highly respected fighter jocks who flew experimental mechas (hybrid robot/jets.) Also back on the scene is Myung who was the prior love interest of the men, and despite their friendship from years prior, there is now a hostility that exists between them. Through the film they are constantly fighting with each other, but a much worse threat looms on the horizon and that is a new AI model that is set to take over the masses through pop culture and its deceptive ways. Little did the boys know, but Myung was actually the one who was using her own experiences to train this new artificial intelligence. Sharon Apple the AI begins to have plans of her own and the three come together to stop it.This film had some very good reviews on IMDB and has a bit of a cult following. The four of us all have a different take on the film, when it comes to the plot, the music, and the animation. There seems to be many references to other films, one being that the AI might be based on the actor Sharon Stone.By the Creators of Cowboy Bebop and written by Keiko Nobumoto, Takumi Yamazaki as Isamu, Unshou Ishizuka as Guld, Rica Fukami as Myung, Megumi Hayashibara as Lucy McMillan, and Mako Hyōdō as Sharon Apple. Today on Too Opinionated we sit down with actor Cam Clarke. For many American families, the King family defined Christmas entertainment. "Now They're All Here: The King Family, Over 100 Years of Entertainment From America's First Family of Song" is a not only a complete history of the famous King family, but a story of author, Cam Clarke's, life in front of and behind the camera. "Now They're All Here: The King Family " is more than just a celebration of television history; it's a family album from one of America's most iconic entertainment families. The King Family has been performing together (and with solo careers) since the 1920s: vaudeville, radio, musical films of the 1940s, kitschy sci-fi from the 1950s, tours across the country, recordings in musical genres from jazz and big band to Broadway and pop—even cartoons and video games. Cameron Arthur Clarke is an American voice actor who is known for voicing Leonardo and Rocksteady from the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon, Shotaro Kaneda from Akira, Freddy from the Barnyard franchise, Liquid Snake from Metal Gear Solid, Clay Kaczmarek from Assassin's Creed II and Simba from The Lion King franchise whenever Matthew Broderick is unavailable. Cam is also known for being the voice for Snoopy (Snoopy the Musical/Talking Snoopy Doll), Max Sterling in Robotech, He-Man in the 2002 He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, the tween idol, Heath Burns, in the original Monster High, and Professor X in several X-Men properties. Welcome to The Pencil Pushers Podcast. In this episode, I chat with the multitalented Armando “Mondo” Roque about his incredible journey from childhood robot doodles to designing iconic toys.Mondo takes us back to the '80s, reminiscing about sketching RoboTech battles as a kid and getting his start as a caricature artist at Knott's Berry Farm. He shares his winding educational path through multiple art schools and how he eventually made the leap from corporate graphic design to a creative role at By George Inc., where he helped develop standout projects like the animatronic Hero Droid BB-8.Now serving as the creative director of Dreams of Robots, Mondo blends nostalgia with innovation to craft unique art toys that speak to fans of all ages. His story is a reminder that chasing your passion can lead to professional success, and that choosing creativity over comfort can pay off in powerful ways.
