Streaming News 39:41: Whatever the Kodansha-Disney deal was supposed to mean, Justin at least doesn’t know since the newest Ghost in the Shell anime will be streamed on Prime this summer; Chainsaw Man: Reze Arc will stream on Crunchyroll this Spring but Justin of course will make this about Demon Slayer; And not surprisingly, things don’t get cheaper, they get more expensive so Crunchyroll upping the subscription price for all tiers is not a shock. 44:43: GKIDS acquired the North American theatrical rights to Shōji Kawamori’s original animation film Labyrinth and it will be in theaters for two days in May; The 76th Berlin International Film Festival is screening a 4K restoration of Ninja Scroll; and Oceanveil continues branching out from what they’re usually known for, and now has Haigakura & Scum’s Wish on their service. Main Topic: Winter Anime 2026 First Impressions 48:04: Justin and Helen discuss a very packed Winter Anime season, which means you should find a lot to like, whether it’s sequels (Frieren S2, Jujutsu Kaisen S3) to thoughtful and dense shows (Journal With Witch) or hilarious romcoms (Tamon's B-Side, You and I Are Polar Opposites). Just don’t do what Justin’s doing and watch objectively bad anime because you liked the original source (Roll Over and Die at 53:03, Tune in to the Midnight Heart at 1:07:47). Weird News 1:57:24: The year of reviving old material continues, as now Chie Shinohara’s Red River is getting an anime adaptation, so once again Justin implores everyone to let their dreams be dreams and put out in the universe what you want to become an anime! 2:03:51: You wouldn’t think a collaboration between artists would generate any controversy, but if it involves China and My Hero Academia, then yes, there will be controversy; if you like spicy foods and Hatsune Miku, Thailand’s got something for you; And finally, Mamoru Oshii has too much time on his hands since he’s logged way too many hours on Fallout, why would he share this with anyone (meanwhile Justin reveals how many hours he’s logged into Fire Emblem: Three Houses) If there’s anything you’d like to share, please feel free to reach out to us on Twitter (@TheOASG) or comment below with your thoughts! What is a “ReView” episode, you might ask? Well, it's my highly-clever (ok not really) name for episodes where I go back and revisit an older title I haven't seen in a long time, and see if what I remember (and what my opinions on it) are still the same now that some time's gone by. This month, Animeigo's Kickstarter bluray for Dagger of Kamui found it's way to my doorstep one cold December morning...so what better time to revisit this 80s Rintaro classic? This movie truly has everything: Ninja, monks, psychedelic flashing colors, cowboys, treasure hunts, a banger soundtrack, and even Mark Twain! But is that truly enough to make this movie great? Let's revisit it and find out!Stream the episode above or [Direct Download]Subscribe on apple podcasts | Spotify Relevant links: Watch the Trailer for the movie here!Buy the bluray directly from Animeigo here!Check out Madhouse's official page on the movie hereOther titles mentioned in this episode: Galaxy Express 999, Wicked City, Demon City Shinjuku, Ninja Scroll My theme song music was done by Kerobit! Just when you thought our annual Shat The Movies Halloween Spooktacular was over, we've back with one more mystical mission into the macabre. Commissioner Rob is raising "Vampire Hunter D" from the '80s crypt and bracing for our darkest takes. In this episode, voiced by Dick Ebert, Gene and Big D clash on whether the animation is delightfully nostalgic or criminally cheap. Gene asks why there's an 8-year-old wandering the post-apocalyptic countryside with a rifle; and Dick dives into the infamous shower scene. The Shat Crew also discusses why Left Hand eats dirt, what Time-Bewitching Incense actually does and who needed half-naked teen girls offering their bodies to sexually unavailable immortals. Movie Summary:Vampire Hunter D (1985) is a cult-classic Japanese anime film set in a post-apocalyptic future where mutants, vampires, and monsters rule the night. Blending gothic horror, cyberpunk, and dark fantasy, the movie follows D, a mysterious half-human, half-vampire "dhampir" hired to rescue a young woman from the powerful vampire Count Magnus Lee. Directed by Toyoo Ashida and based on Hideyuki Kikuchi's acclaimed light novel, Vampire Hunter D is celebrated for its haunting atmosphere, striking hand-drawn animation, and groundbreaking fusion of sci-fi, horror, and anime aesthetics. A cornerstone of 1980s anime, it paved the way for darker, more adult-oriented animation like Akira and Ninja Scroll, cementing its legacy as a must-watch for fans of vampire anime and classic Japanese animation. Episode 97 - This month we head back to Japan and we are animated. This is anime ninja week, part 4 of Marco's deep dive into ninjas. We are watching an early anime classic Ninja Scroll (1993). Ninja scroll is the story of a vagabond ninja who gestured dragged into battling a group of demons involved in a plot to overthrow the shogunate. And just because this is animated don't let it fool you to thinking you can watch this on a plane. Just ask Pete. We hope you enjoy this episode which was long delayed in being released. Coming soon is our conclusion of Ninja Month, and Pete's reveal for next month.email us at mracfilmclub@gmail.com
¿No? Bueno, al menos eso dijo alguien, alguna vez, en algún lugar. Pues eso. Escucha el episodio completo en la app de iVoox, o descubre todo el catálogo de iVoox Originals
Episode 96 - Pack your bags because we are headed back to China as the ninjas take on the Shaolin monks. This week's main feature is the Ninja vs Shaolin (1983). This one is more kung fu than ninja and the ninjas are not portrayed very favorably. It once again features Japanese in China as the Japanese employ ninjas and other schemes to try and take over a Shaolin Temple. It is pretty ridiculous and low budget but it has some great martial arts. We had a lot of fun discussing this, and Brian and Marco spent some time discussing the supplemental: 5 Elements Ninja, a Shaw Brothers production. Tune in next week as we cover some anime and watch Ninja Scroll (1993).email us at mracfilmclub@gmail.com

Today, we're taking a look at another influential anime classic with 1993's Ninja Scroll. A wandering ninja named Kibagami Jubei must confront his past after running afoul of the Eight Devils of Kimon, a group of monstrously powerful ninjas led by Himuro Gemma. Jubei is joined by Kagero, a kunoichi of the Mochizuki clan, and an elderly Tokugawa spy named Dakuan. Our heroes must face the Eight Devils and their deadly techniques one by one. All the while, Jubei wonders how Gemma has seemingly returned from the dead after their fatal encounter years earlier. Our enthusiasts also take a stroll through the anime content minds to discuss favorite series they've been watching recently, including Josh's thoughts on last month's topic selection - Dragonball Daima, Kelvin's recommendations of Ninja Scroll and My Friend Totoro, and Amanda's recommendation of Shangri La Frontier: Season 2. Dragonball Daima and Shangri La Frontier are currently streaming on Crunchyroll, Ninja Scroll on Apple TV and HIDIVE, and My Friend Totoro on Max. In Anime News, they discuss the new post credit scene from Attack on Titan: The Last Attack currently in theaters in Japan. Stay tuned next month for Anime x Pop's year in review mega draft!

We're talking about being a bit of a thrillseeker, the efforts to make Ninja Scroll accessible, the plethora of "dudes rock" moments and much much more... you won't want to miss this hyperviolent hyperawesome horror flick that influenced some of the biggest names in the game! link to post about the show's conclusion ----more----PLUS: New bonus content for the patreon includes a guest appearance on Guys Gotta Gotti, full video of the Gremlins commentary I did with Mike Mitchell of the Doughboys and the Choose Your Own Adventure book "Track Star" being navigated with the help of the twitch chat. You know listeners, I miss the 1980s and 1990s. During this time anime was in your face with insane stories, spectacular characters, and over-the-top ultra-violence that is rarely seen in our modern era. Akira, Ghost in the Shell, Ninja Scroll, and many others would define my anime fandom during this time. Anime just wasn't a really well-known thing back in then like it is today. Lily C.A.T. is perhaps not as spectacular as the original Vampire Hunter D, but it does pay a LOT of homage to great horror sci-fi films such as the Aliens franchise. It also most certainly takes elements from The Thing as well, and others too. In this episode, we will talk about this strange little-known sci-fi horror anime, the films that it was inspired by, and whether this is a classic OVA (original video animation) that you should go out of your way to see or just obscure anime trash. All this and much more, on this episode of the United Nations of Horror! The United Nations of Horror is a Podcast about ALL THINGS HORROR! From thrillers of yesteryear to today's modern-day horror, we are here to present fun and intelligent conversation about the genre films we love! "Jubei's Ninja Chronicles") is a 1993 Japanese animated jidaigeki-chanbara film written and directed by Yoshiaki Kawajiri, starring the voices of Kōichi Yamadera, Emi Shinohara, Takeshi Aono, Daisuke Gōri, Toshihiko Seki and Shūichirō Moriyama. The film was a co-production between JVC, Toho and Movic, with Madhouse serving as the animation studio. Ninja Scroll was theatrically released in Japan on June 5, 1993, and received an English-dubbed release through Manga Entertainment in 1995.[1] The film takes place in feudal Japan and follows Kibagami Jubei, a mercenary swordsman who battles the Eight Devils of Kimon, a team of ninjas with supernatural powers who are intent on overthrowing the Tokugawa shogunate. During his quest, he is aided by Dakuan, an elderly but crafty government spy, and Kagero, a Kōga kunoichi whose body is infused with poisonous toxins. Praised for its animation and action scenes, Ninja Scroll is regarded by many as one of the most influential anime films ever made. Alongside Akira and Ghost in the Shell, it was responsible for increasing the popularity of adult-oriented anime outside of Japan. The film has been cited by The Wachowskis as an influence on the Matrix franchise, and resulted in Kawajiri later contributing to two segments of the anthology film The Animatrix.[2] A televised stand-alone sequel, Ninja Scroll: The Series, was aired in Japan in 2003. In Edo period-Japan, the Yamashiro clan (山城藩, Yamashiro-han) mines gold in secret, and sends a shipment to the Toyotomi Shogun of the Dark (闇公方, Yami Kubō) as payment for his protection. The Shogun of the Dark intends to use the gold to buy advanced Spanish weaponry and overthrow the current government, the Tokugawa Shogunate. The ship runs aground onto Mochizuki territory (望月藩, Mochizuki-han) in a storm, and the Eight Devils of Kimon (鬼門八人衆, Kimon Hachininshū), a ninja team with supernatural powers in the employ of the Yamashiro, kill the people of the nearby Shimoda Village (下田村, Shimoda-mura) to keep the gold shipment a secret.
In our family-friendly, post-Pixar world, it's easy to forget kids of the '90s enjoyed some adult animation—some VERY adult animation. If you're into ultraviolence, overcomplicated plots, fingerbanging, poison kisses and superb boobs, "Ninja Scroll" is the movie for you. Listener Eric C. encouraged "Shat The Movies" to embrace all those things in the Crew's first viewing of this 1993 Japanese animation classic. And boy did we! Along the way, Ash noted the film's influence on "The Matrix," Dick Ebert felt the comic book nostalgia of his youth, and Gene Lyons asked, "Are the Japanese OK?" Other topics on this episode include: Are anime characters Asian? Are some superpowers just too much? Do women anime fans exist? And how should you let down a ninja who offers to save your life with sex?
