Political analyst Joy-Ann Reid is making television history as she becomes the first woman of color to anchor a prime-time news show on MSNBC and the only Black woman currently anchoring a prime-time news show on any of the major networks. The last Black woman to host a prime-time network news show was Gwen Ifill, who, along with Judy Woodruff, was a co-anchor on the PBS NewsHour until her death at age 61 in 2016.  Joy-Ann’s new show will take over the primetime slot once held by Chris Matthews’ Hardball, and will be based out of Washington, D.C. Joy also has a best-selling new book: The Man Who Sold America: Trump and the Unraveling of the American Story (Harper Collins, 2019), was published in June and is a New York Times best seller. She is the author of the book Fracture: Barack Obama, the Clintons and the Racial Divide (William Morrow/Harper Collins, 2015) and the co-editor, with Washington Post columnist E.J. Dionne, of We Are the Change We Seek: The Speeches of Barack Obama (Bloomsbury, 2016).  Reid’s columns and articles have appeared in The New York Times, The Guardian, The Miami Herald, New York Magazine and The Daily Beast.  She has previously worked in local TV news, as a talk radio producer and host, and in politics as a Florida press secretary for America Coming Together (2004) and a Florida press aide for the Barack Obama campaign (2008). As the former managing editor of TheGrio.com, Reid led a staff of 12 young journalists in exploring stories and issues of importance to African-Americans. After a stint with The Grio from 2011 to 2014, she was tapped to host her first branded cable news show: The Reid Report, a daily news program on MSNBC. In 2014, she took the helm of the Saturday 10 a.m. to noon block with “AM Joy.” The daughter of a college professor mom, Reid taught a course on “race, gender and media” at Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Communications’ New York City annex from 2017 through 2018.  Reid graduated from Harvard University with a concentration in film in 1991. She and her husband Jason own a documentary film production company. They reside in New York and have three children. Learn more about your ad choices. Joy-Ann Reid is the host of "AM Joy" on MSNBC. She is the author of several books including Fracture: Barack Obama, the Clintons and the Racial Divide as well as We Are the Change We Seek: The Speeches of Barack Obama. Her new book is The Man Who Sold America: Trump and the Unraveling of the American Story.  Reid explains how Donald Trump has betrayed American democracy, why his violence, racism and other vile behavior is appealing to his supporters, and how he is the human embodiment of America's cultural and social ills. Joy-Ann Reid also reflects on how best to make sense of this confusing and disorienting moment in American history and a Republican Party and Donald Trump which are committed to restoring American Apartheid and total white rule over an increasingly diverse country. On this week's show Chauncey DeVega ponders why so many journalists, reporters, and the American people as a whole, are still surprised by Donald Trump's racism and his newest exercise in presidential white supremacy -- the slurring of four nonwhite Democratic congresswomen (most notably Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) as somehow being inherently "un-American" and who should be kicked out of the United States if they do not bow in fealty to Trump's racial authoritarian regime. Chauncey also shares several news items which highlight Trump's war on America's multiracial democracy and his campaign of cruelty against nonwhites and then asks you, the listeners, to connect the dots. Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation now includes two indictments and a guilty plea. Writing yesterday in Vanity Fair Magazine, Gabriel Sherman reports that Steve Bannon is now openly worried about Donald Trump being impeached or removed under the 25th amendment, and that Bannon fears a revolt by some members of the cabinet, and the Republican establishment. All of this is, of course, music to the ears of the Progressive Left. But should impeachment efforts form the fundament of the Trump resistance movement? Progressives, and many conservatives, for that matter, agree that Trump is unfit to serve in the highest office in the land. But what else do they agree on? Is there consensus about health care, tax policy, or counter-terrorism? What do Democrats stand for besides standing against Trump?Tom's first guest today was Joy-Ann Reid, host of AM Joy on MSNBC, where she is also a political analyst. She is the author of the book ----Fracture: Barack Obama, The Clintons and the Racial Divide,---- which was published in 2015, with an update in the summer of 2016.
