The Department of Justice has faced backlash from members of Congress and survivors of Jeffrey Epstein following the release of millions of documents with inconsistent redactions of key names and details. On Today's Show: Vicky Ward, investigative journalist and author of books including Kushner, Inc. A Missouri investor named Andrew Bar has filed a lawsuit against Bannon and fellow MAGA operative Boris Epstein over the now-defunct FJB coin cryptocurrency, alleging nearly $59,000 in losses on a $60,000 investment. Hawk walks through the details of the FJB coin operation, including the suspicious 8% transaction fee structure that promised charitable donations to causes like veterans care but allegedly redirected funds to high-risk investments in obscure coins. With $2.7 million in transaction fees reportedly unaccounted for and investor wallets frozen since early 2025, the lawsuit is seeking class action status.This is not Bannon's first financial scandal. He was pardoned by Trump after a federal indictment tied to the fraudulent We Build the Wall fundraiser, which raised tens of millions in small-dollar donations from Trump supporters before Bannon and associates allegedly pocketed the money. So we found out yesterday from the Epstein files that in 2018, Steve Bannon told Epstein that the 25th Amendment should be invoked against Trump. Back then. So utterly at odds with everything Bannon says publicly about Trump. And it reminded me and disgusted me once again, that Trump and everyone in Trump's orbit lies. All the time. This is an audio essay from my Substack, Process This. Look, I wasn't planning to write 5,000 words on Steve Bannon, but then he goes on his podcast and announces that ICE—the same agency that just shot two American citizens in Minneapolis—is going to "surround the polls" in November, and I couldn't help myself. So I went back to Reinhold Niebuhr's 1944 book The Children of Light and the Children of Darkness, where he divided the political world into naive idealists who think reason and dialogue will save us, and moral cynics who understand power but recognize no law beyond their own will. Turns out Niebuhr basically wrote Bannon's biography eighty years early. This essay traces how Bannon evolved from "flooding the zone with shit" to proposing armed federal agents at polling places—and why liberals kept bringing fact-checks to a knife fight. Niebuhr called the children of darkness "wise" because they understand self-interest, but he also called them "evil" because they serve no good beyond domination. The question he leaves us with is whether the children of light can get wise without losing their souls. Spoiler: he doesn't promise we win. PS.
