Broadway Publicist and Tony Award Honoree Irene Gandy Takes Us Behind the Curtains of The Great White Way, along with Emilio Sosa, the newly appointed Chair of the American Theater Wing. Emilio is also a tony-nominated costume and fashion designer. The recent Tony Awards gave us all hope and a strong signal that Broadway is coming back after taking a hard hit by the COVID-19 pandemic. And we will see more diversity as actors and producers gave speeches about their yearning for more inclusive stories on Broadway stages. In this interview, these two Broadway leadership stars share a behind the scenes look at one of the best places on earth! Start buying tickets and support the theater now! Irene Gandy is the only Black female press agent member of ATPAM (Association of Theatrical Press Agents and Managers) for over 50 years. Working with Producer Jeffrey Richards for over three decades, she is a Tony Award-winning Broadway producer for The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess, and was a producer for Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill starring Audra MacDonald. She was also co-producer with Voza Rivers of the National tour of South African musical Sarafina. In 2008, she became the first female press agent to be immortalized with a Sardi's caricature. A fashionista known for her furs, in 2015 she launched a signature collection featured in Vogue magazine and will debut a Lady Irene Fur line in 2022.  Gandy's recent productions include The Great Society, American Son, China Doll, Fiddler on the Roof, and You Can't Take It With You. She began her career in 1968 as a publicist with Douglas Turner Ward and Robert Hooks' Negro Ensemble Company. Since then, she has worked on over 100 Broadway shows including August: Osage County, Glengarry Glen Ross, Radio Golf, Bubbling Brown Sugar, Smokey Joe's Cafe, Lena Horne: The Lady and her Music, and The Wiz. About Emilio Sosa: Born in the Dominican Republic and raised in New York City, Emilio is one of Broadway's most unique talents. He began his theatre career at Grace Costumes, starting as a shopper, and eventually becoming its Creative Director. He credits this time as the foundation for his career. Emilio went on to tour the world with Celine Dion, The Alvin Ailey Dance Company, and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis. Emilio made a name for himself styling music videos for Hip Hop pioneers, Salt-N- Pepa, MC Lyte, and Kid & Play to name a few. He has also designed for music icons Diana Ross, Mariah Carey and Gloria Estefan. Catching the eye of director Spike Lee, Emilio became his in-house stylist, working on national and international ad campaigns, before setting his sight on Broadway, where he was mentored by director George C. Wolfe, for whom he designed his first Broadway show, TOPDOG / UNDERDOG. His other Broadway credits include, ON YOUR FEET! The Emilio and Gloria Estefan Story, MOTOWN: The Musical, PORGY AND BESS (TONY Award nom) and LADY DAY at EMERSON'S BAR AND GRILL. He shares the unique distinction of being the first designer of color to design The Radio City Music Hall Spring Spectacular and a new permanent number for the legendary Christmas Show, both starring The Rockettes. He has received both Tony Award and Drama Desk Award nominations and has been the recipient a Lucille Lortell Award, NAACP Theatre Awards, and LA Ovation Award. Emilio's talent was also evident on season seven of Project Runway and Project Runway All Stars, where he showed his final collection on all models of color, a first for the popular franchise. A proud Trustee of the American Theatre Wing, Emilio shares his vast theatre knowledge with communities rarely represented, by sponsoring theatre trips, workshops and talk backs. “I believe theatre has the ability to build the bridges needed for all of us to better understand ourselves and the world we live in.” Learn more about your ad choices. In this episode of Rolonda on Demand, I introduce you to two of my favorite women of FAITH - Reverend Shannon A. White and Reverend Dr. Terrlyn Curry Avery - both with whom I share a special friendship as the two of them share the pulpit to the pew for social and spiritual change. The two ministers discuss maintaining a mindset of faith and the importance of learning, growing and stretching in these drastic times of change, truth and discomfort. Shannon introduces herself: I am a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary with an emphasis in Pastoral Care. Since my ordination in 1990, I have served three other congregations--one in Scarsdale, NY and two in Greenwich, CT. But I felt my call to ministry in another way as well. Wanting to broaden and deepen public discourse on pertinent issues, I became a radio host with a rabbi colleague and then a TV reporter for 9 years. Two of my pieces on incarceration and addiction were nominated for Emmys. I also served as Assoc. Producer for the CBS News Religion Unit, putting together 4 interfaith documentaries a year. I love to travel to non-touristy places around the world, ride my bike, run and do the NY Times crossword—but only through Wednesday. I have an incredible daughter, Peyton, who attends the University of Delaware. I am the author of How Was School Today? Fine (co-written with my daughter) and The Invisible Conversations with Your Aging Parents. Contact Shannon at https://www.facebook.com/wiltonpresby... The Reverend. Dr. Terrlyn L. Curry Avery and I met in India, studying meditation atop Mt. Abu! Terrlyn is the creator of Pastology, the cutting edge field that focuses on the synergy between pastoring and psychology. She holds a Ph.D. from Hofstra University and a Masters of Divinity from Yale University. She calls herself a pastologist and is a transformational leader, speaker, author and retreat leader. Rev. Dr. Terrlyn L. Curry Avery has a unique approach to healing, transformation, and manifestation. She places the emphasis on your journey toward sacred intelligence: your ability to tap into your internal source in order to move toward intelligent choices. Those choices are intended to honor the Sacred and help you manifest your greatness, while simultaneously embracing the humanity of those around you. Rev. Dr. Curry Avery believes that ‘relating’ on both a spiritual and human level is crucial to helping ourselves and others manifest our greatness and creating more harmonious life sustaining relationships. Rev. Dr. Curry Avery works with highly influential and committed leaders who need spiritual and psychological support as they transform the world by creating a legacy of service, prosperity, and greatness. Rev. Dr. Curry Avery is the author of Sacred Intelligence: The Essence of Sacred, Selfish & Shared Relationships and is currently writing her second book with a working title Sacred Intelligence: Leading with Passion and Faith During Unprecedented Times. www.sacredintelligence.com info@sacredintelligence.com https://www.facebook.com/terrlyncurry... Look who’s talking today on Rolonda On Demand! Baltimore Judge Karen Friedman lays down the law on how #COVID19,, the #BLM Movement, #mentalillness and the recent surge in #crime and #donesticviolence are affecting the #criminaljustice system. Plus, Judge Karen and I have an open and honest conversation about the historic bond between Blacks and Jews on the frontlines of #racialjustice and how that historic bond is needed now more than ever. In this episode of Rolonda On Demand, I continue my cool conversations about race, class and justice with Baltimore's Judge Karen Friedman who expresses grave concern over the rise of hate crimes, including anti-semiticism, most hurtfully and recently from Black celebrity, Nick Cannon. Judge Friedman cites the historic bond between Blacks and Jews and encourages continued bonding, learning each others' history and counseling in some cases over cancelling. Judge Karen grew up in Brooklyn, New York in an Orthodox Jewish family. She attended a right wing all Jewish Orthodox school but was raised in an “open-minded” family. She credits this open-mindedness for her success. While her brothers all became rabbis, Judge Friedman became a judge. Her mother maintained a business while her father was a business school professor. At the age of 19 Judge Friedman moved to Maryland and would go on to attend the University of Maryland School of Law. The connections she made at the law school and the friendships she forged proved to be a great asset to her in the future. When a Probate Judge died, she was asked to fill the vacant position, and was appointed Probate Judge by Governor Paris Glendenning shortly thereafter. Her career has since taken her to the District Court of Maryland and finally the Baltimore Circuit Court – the highest-level trial court in the state. Judge Friedman described the relationship between her public position and her faith throughout this account. Judge Friedman also talks about: How Class is as big a controversial issue as race in America. (18:36) Mental Illness and the Law (20:50) Have Prisons Become the Depositories of Society's Ills? I'm often asked - "What's your favorite talk show moment?" This is among my best picks: The Reunion of The Jeffersons! In this new IN THE VAULT series, I share some of my favorite ROLONDA! talk show moments from the 90s. The Jeffersons Reunion was certainly one of them, where we get an amazing behind the scenes peek at one of the most beloved sitcoms and sitcom characters of all time. In this episode, I chat with cast members Sherman Helmsley, Marla Gibbs, Isabel Sanford, Mike Evans, Roxie Roker, and more. Developed by groundbreaking television producer Norman Lear, The Jeffersons began in 1975 as as spin-off of All in the Family. It follows a successful African-American couple George and Louise "Weezy" Jefferson as they move on up from working class Queens to a ritzy Manhattan apartment. The sitcom had a strong Fanbase throughout its 11 season run and it never shied away from controversial subjects, including, racism and suicide. In 1981 Isabel Sanford became the first African-American woman in history to win a prime time Emmy Award in the category of Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. The show remains one of the most beloved and most successful sitcoms of all time, reminding us all why we love comedy! For more visit the RolondaWattsChannel on Youtube!
