She is the author of several books including Fracture: Barack Obama, the Clintons and the Racial Divide as well as We Are the Change We Seek: The Speeches of Barack Obama. Her new book is The Man Who Sold America: Trump and the Unraveling of the American Story.  Reid explains how Donald Trump has betrayed American democracy, why his violence, racism and other vile behavior is appealing to his supporters, and how he is the human embodiment of America's cultural and social ills. Joy-Ann Reid also reflects on how best to make sense of this confusing and disorienting moment in American history and a Republican Party and Donald Trump which are committed to restoring American Apartheid and total white rule over an increasingly diverse country. On this week's show Chauncey DeVega ponders why so many journalists, reporters, and the American people as a whole, are still surprised by Donald Trump's racism and his newest exercise in presidential white supremacy -- the slurring of four nonwhite Democratic congresswomen (most notably Ilhan Omar and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) as somehow being inherently "un-American" and who should be kicked out of the United States if they do not bow in fealty to Trump's racial authoritarian regime. Chauncey also shares several news items which highlight Trump's war on America's multiracial democracy and his campaign of cruelty against nonwhites and then asks you, the listeners, to connect the dots. The world’s leading philanthropists are constantly working to “make the world a better place,” leading passionate campaigns against everything from climate change to poverty that had once been the province of governments. Journalist Anand Giridharadas asks whether those rich and powerful people who have most benefitted from “our highly inequitable status quo” are in fact the best candidates to take on these challenges. When are their solutions democratic and universal, and when do they reflect and support the biases that introduced the inequity in the first place? In conversation with Joy-Ann Reid, political analyst for MSNBC and host of “AM Joy,” Giridharadas discussed his new book, “Winners Take All: The Elite Charade of Changing the World,” a call to action—for elite and everyday citizens alike—to build more egalitarian institutions.

Robert Mueller’s Russia investigation now includes two indictments and a guilty plea. Writing yesterday in Vanity Fair Magazine, Gabriel Sherman reports that Steve Bannon is now openly worried about Donald Trump being impeached or removed under the 25th amendment, and that Bannon fears a revolt by some members of the cabinet, and the Republican establishment. All of this is, of course, music to the ears of the Progressive Left. But should impeachment efforts form the fundament of the Trump resistance movement? Progressives, and many conservatives, for that matter, agree that Trump is unfit to serve in the highest office in the land. But what else do they agree on? Is there consensus about health care, tax policy, or counter-terrorism? What do Democrats stand for besides standing against Trump?Tom's first guest today was Joy-Ann Reid, host of AM Joy on MSNBC, where she is also a political analyst. If you've ever tuned into weekend mornings on MSNBC, you know the ever-appropriately named Joy Ann Reid, host of AM Joy. But if Saturday and Sunday mornings aren't your jam, that's ok, because MSNBC is getting their money's worth out of Reid, with appearances on nearly every show they have at one point or another. In her profile, I described Nicolle Wallace as “delightfully Republican,” Reid, in a lot of ways, may just be her Liberal counterpart with her trademark smile and infectious laugh. Getting her start in local news in Miami, and a Harvard education, Reid is one of the brightest bulbs in the bunch providing analysis on the biggest stories of the day, alongside some of the heavy-hitters in news, day-in and day-out. Reid is an author, her first book is called Fracture: Barack Obama, The Clintons, and the Racial Divide. She's also a self-proclaimed policy wonk, she's got the important, useful ability to break down complex issues in a way that makes them digestible and accessible; priding herself on her show's unique ability to talk to politicos who love the daily grind of K-street and also to people who'd rather not get into the weeds. I talked to Reid on a rare day off, while she was home with her dog.
