Christie Goodwin is a music photographer who has photographed a huge number of bands. She started photography at a young age using her father's film camera and studied photography in art school because she felt she wasn't suited for technical school. Her first experience of music photography was shooting a friend's covers band, and when someone sent her images to the manager of Status Quo, he hired her to photograph the band. Although she has struggled with imposter syndrome and faced challenges as a female photographer, Christie has always persevered and built her confidence and portfolio. She enjoys capturing the passion and creativity of musicians, and recommends embracing the conditions you're given rather than fighting them. Today's guest, former White House photographer Pete Souza, is a bucket-list item for me. I started Behind the Shot because I am a fan of great photography, or more specifically great photographers. Through the over six years I have been doing the show, I have had a range of guests, in a range of genres, from legends, to people I wasn't aware of before asking them to be on the show. While I have discovered many amazing creatives through doing this podcast, when I started there were a few specific people I hoped would someday be on the show. Joe McNally checked off one of those boxes last year when he came on for the show Master of Light, and again when he helped with the show on the Best Photo Advice You've Been Given. Scott Kelby has now been on a few times, with Insights From Scott Kelby and Timeless Photography. Trey Ratcliff stopped by twice, for Raise Your Dynamic Range and Documenting Burning Man, Christie Goodwin did Fireworks, Ed Sheeran: Memories We Made, and also helped with the Best Photo Advice You've Been Given show, and Rick Sammon, David Bergman, and Don Komarechka each have been here too many times to list. Well, today checks off the name I never thought I would get, and excited doesn't begin to cover what I am feeling. Often described as the White House photographer for the eight years of the Obama administration, Mr. Souza's career, and influence on the industry, is so much more than that. Pete Souza is a best-selling author, speaker and freelance photographer. His actual title during the Obama years was Chief Official White House Photographer and the Director of the White House photo office. That job alone would instill fear in most photographers, but Souza has done it more than once! He was also the Official White House Photographer for Ronald Reagan. As an author, Pete has written some of the definitive books related to White House photography. His book, Obama: An Intimate Portrait, was published in 2017, and debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, and to date it is one of the best-selling photography books of all time. His 2018 book, Shade: A Tale of Two Presidents, also debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. Shade is a portrait in Presidential contrasts, telling the tale of the Obama and Trump administrations through a series of visual juxtapositions. His most recent book, The West Wing and Beyond: What I Saw Inside the Presidency, was published in September 2022. This book lets us behind the scenes of the West Wing — and into the Oval Office, the Situation Room, aboard Air Force One, and beyond — in intimate detail. Based on his best-selling books, Souza became the subject of a documentary film, The Way I See It, in November 2020.  If you haven't seen it, I can't recommend it enough. It is absolute fantastic. The film takes an unprecedented look behind the scenes of two of the most iconic Presidents in history, Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan, as seen through Souza's eyes and camera. As Official White House Photographer for both these Presidents, Souza was an eyewitness to the unique and tremendous responsibilities of being the most powerful man in the world. The film also reveals how Souza transformed from a respected White House photographer and photojournalist to a searing commentator on the importance of having someone with empathy and dignity in the office of the Presidency. In addition to the national political scene, Souza has covered stories around the world. After 9/11, he was among the first journalists to cover the fall of Kabul, Afghanistan, after crossing the Hindu Kush mountains by horseback in three feet of snow. While at the Chicago Tribune, Souza was also part of the staff awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for explanatory reporting on the airline industry. As an educator, Pete Souza is Professor Emeritus of Visual Communication at Ohio University, and as a lecturer he is in high demand. He has lectured on his photography at the Smithson...

Live event and concert photography have obviously been drastically impacted by the global pandemic and related shutdowns. Let’s give a shout-out to all the photographers, musicians, technicians, and crew who have struggled with the loss of that part of their income and craft, but also make time on the B&H Photography Podcast to talk about concert photography as we inch toward a hopeful return to live music and art performances. Today’s guest is Christie Goodwin, a premiere concert and music photographer. She has been the tour photographer for the likes of Taylor Swift and Usher and has shot in venues around the world. She is also the house photographer for the famed Royal Albert Hall in London. Her work is impeccable, and a quick glance at her website features some of the most recognized faces in contemporary music today. With Goodwin we speak on a range of topics, including her goals as a concert photographer based on the needs of the artist, the management team, the venue, or the fans. We also talk about life on tour, the trust necessary to work with musicians, shooting techniques learned from experience, and how she lets a concert “speak to her” as she decides her photographic approach. We also talk briefly about her Canon DSLR cameras and lenses, and about her side hustle, creating conceptual images for book covers, and how this primarily mirrorless endeavor is the yin to her concert photography yang. Join us for this insightful and practical conversation. Guest: Christie Goodwin Photograph: Christie Goodwin

Rocking photography with live concert photographer Steve Brazill - an inspiring conversation about this unique genre of photography.   This episode is sponsored by: HoneyBook - Win Clients. Book Faster. Get Paid. Stay Organized. Steve Brazill is a live music and sports photographer from Southern California. He has been around the entertainment industry for many years and his images have been published in newsprints and magazines. He is also a radio personality and has been active at KCAL FM for more than 30 years. Naturally, with a radio voice he is also a voice actor and the host and owner of the “Behind the Shot” Podcast - he is also known on-air as Razz.   Steve picked Christie Goodwin as the PPN inspirational photographer of the month. Christie is a British photographer and has worked hard to become the house photographer of the Royal Albert Hall. She has also been a tour photographer for famous musicians such as Katy Perry, Ed Sheeran, Taylor Swift, Paul McCartney, Joe Bonamassa, and One Direction. Her images don’t only appear on magazines, CDs, and tour merchandise. She also shoots covers for best selling crime novels. You can find out more about Christie Goodwin on her website: https://www.christiegoodwin.com   In the main part of the show, Steve and Marco discuss the unique rules and approaches to music and concert photography. Some of the points that they cover are: How do you prepare for a concert? How do you get access? Who hires and buys the images? And what makes a good concert photo?   Here are the links to Steve’s work and social media accounts:   Web: stevebrazill.com Podcast: behindtheshot.tv Twitter: https://twitter.com/stevebrazill    Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/stevebrazill/    Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/SteveBrazillPhotography/    Marco’s inspirational photo book of the month is called: “One Night in Rio” - by Paul Ripke.   Link to book at Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/2tEc7Yg Published by Edel Books Germany  (408 pages)   The book “One night in Rio” is a photo documentary of the German National Soccer Team at the World Cup 2014 in Brazil. The book mainly consists of photographs with only very few headlines or explanations in German. But this is a book that tells the story even without words. The first part of the book contains borderless full-page portraits of the whole national team and coaches taken before the world cup. The next part documents moments on the sideline of the final match Germany vs. Argentina which Germany won towards the end of the game. Paul was allowed on the field and documented the many little emotional moments of the players, coaches, staff, and fans after the victory. He also followed the team into the locker room and captured some amazing images of players celebrating, some sitting in front of the locker with their cell phone calling their loved ones, and others are playing soccer with their kids. His documentary continues with the bus ride back to the hotel, and the flight back to Germany where the team was welcomed with a huge parade which is also documented from the players' point of view in this book. At the end of the book, he took a whole set of portraits of the team again, but this time each person posing differently with the world cup trophy. This book made it into the book bestseller list in Germany. And no matter if you root for the German team or not, this book is a very intimate look at what is going on behind the scenes in pro sports. The pressure and the emotions that are involved can relate to any super bowl or other major sports event. Determining the “why” before the “how” in photography is essential to understanding your subject better and create stronger images. In each episode, they introduce you to an inspirational photographer of the month and also share an inspirational photo book of the month.
