#566 In this episode of the podcast, I explore how photography can be a powerful tool for self-discovery—not just a way to create beautiful images or chase technical perfection. I share my belief that the most meaningful photos aren't always the ones that earn the most likes or comments. Instead, our true value as photographers comes from how honestly we depict our lives and the world around us. KEY TOPICS COVEREDPhotography as Self-Discovery - Raymond explains that photography is more than just technical skill or visual appeal—it's a tool for self-exploration. The choices you make behind the camera act as a "mirror," revealing your interests, values, and the way you see the world. The Mirror and the Megaphone Metaphor - The “mirror” captures your authentic, unfiltered truth, while the “megaphone” amplifies what you choose to share with the world—curated, staged, or idealized moments. The real magic happens when your megaphone projects your mirror's truth.Practical Ways to Shoot Authentically - Raymond recommends concrete strategies, like setting reminders to document ordinary scenes (e.g., your fridge, messy rooms) to foster honesty in your work. He challenges listeners to photograph something honest, unpolished, and meaningful—if only for themselves.IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS & CONCEPTSMirror: The aspect of photography that reflects your true self—your interests, emotions, and what you naturally notice. It's about authenticity.Megaphone: The way you present or share your images, shaping how your story is told to others. This can be more curated or staged but is most powerful when aligned with your mirror.DISCUSSION & REFLECTION QUESTIONSWhat do your everyday photo choices reveal about you?Have you ever felt pressure to shoot for an audience instead of for yourself? How can you begin to capture more authentic and honest moments in your daily life?Grab your free 52 Lightroom Presets athttp://freephotographypresets.com/Connect with Raymond! #564 In this episode of the podcast, I dive deep into the idea that while capturing the right moment in photography matters most, it's not everything. I share my own experiences as a photographer, especially those early days when I felt overwhelmed by all the camera settings—aperture, shutter speed, ISO—and how easy it is to get distracted by what influencers say you need in terms of new gear. I open up about how sharing my photos online sometimes left me second-guessing myself when the feedback was harsh or not constructive, and how important it is for our mental health to not tie our self-worth to internet commentary.KEY TOPICS COVEREDThe Role of Moment in Great Photography - I talk about why the “moment” is king, but also share a story of photographing race cars with my son to show that technical choices—like shutter speed—are what give your images the power to convey emotion and story.Overcoming Overwhelm and Gear Envy - I reflect on my struggles with self-doubt, gear lust, and how feeling unskilled led me to blame my camera for missed shots. I encourage you to focus on learning and being patient with yourself instead of obsessing over equipment or social media critique.Shooting in Manual and Preparing for the Moment - I break down my personal workflow, from choosing settings to working with couples, so you can enter your sessions confident in exposure and ready to pay attention to the fleeting moments that matter.IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS & CONCEPTSManual Mode: The camera setting where the photographer controls ISO, aperture, and shutter speed, rather than letting the camera choose. This gives more creative control and removes uncertainty about exposure.Exposure: The overall brightness or darkness of a photograph, determined by settings such as shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Proper exposure is essential for capturing high-quality moments.DISCUSSION & REFLECTION QUESTIONSHow has mastering camera settings changed the way you feel during a shoot?Have social media comments ever affected your confidence? How can you protect your creative process? What can you do before a session to minimize stress and maximize your ability to catch authentic moments?Sign up for your free CloudSpot Account today at www.DeliverPhotos.comConnect with Raymond! I sometimes wonder, while writing these guest photographer posts, how many listeners or viewers actually read them. The truth is it doesn't matter to me, I write them for myself more than anyone else, and I find that trying to put someone's talent into written words really helps me distill my thoughts about their work. Take today's guest, Melody Mellinger, for example... I think my first introduction to Melody's work was back in February of 2020, for Episode 4 of the monthly Behind the Shot Critique shows I used to do with Don Komarechka - damn I miss doing those. After that, I think Melody must have had an image in at least 7 of the critique shows. What she doesn't know is that in every critique show, 28 in all, I always tried to have a mix of shots, so that there would be a few that we might have a lot to contribute to, and others that could work as a reference point, a baseline for what a great shot looks like. Her images were part of that later category. One image I distinctly remember was in critique show 5. It was called Open Wide, and it is a magnificent shot. My first thought was that I wouldn't have anything to say about it - yeah, it's that good - but when I brought it on screen during the show a few things came to mind, and Melody actually went and redid the image with our suggestions. Here's the BEFORE and AFTER for you. Since those first introductions to Melody's work I have become such a fan. What I find fascinating is that Melody's adventures in nature photography didn't begin until 2015, with her first DSLR, a Canon Rebel T6i. What led her to bird photography? Her children. She knew they were going to get tired of being models much faster than she was going to master that Canon, so she moved on to flowers and butterflies, before moving on again to the challenge of backyard songbirds. Since 2022 she has used a Canon 5D Mark IV, and for her bird photography she pairs it with a 100-400mm and a 1.4x extender. Yes, you read that right... a DSLR, not some new mirrorless body, and the shots she is making with it will blow your mind. Next time you think you need new gear, go browse Melody's Instagram. You'll quickly realize that you probably don't, and you can thank her for saving you money. Back in January, Melody posted that she'd won something from FStoppers, and the shot that was featured in their Best Images of 2024 Critique show stopped me in my tracks. I mean, wow... just wow. I knew right then I needed to get her on the show. Join nature and wildlife photographer Melody Mellinger and me as we discuss her amazing bird photography, and as we take a deep dive into the shot that she had featured in the FStoppers Best Images of 2024 Contest. In episode 654, Megan chats with Ashley Freeman about professional food styling, including how to embrace ‘mess' and other key elements that make food images visually appealing and unique. Ashley Strickland Freeman is the creator of the blog Little Black Skillet. Just like a "Little Black Dress," she strives to create approachable, everyday recipes her audience can trust and turn to again and again. With over 19 years of experience as a food stylist, cookbook author, recipe developer and tester, and culinary producer (culinary content creator for short), Ashley offers a unique perspective having worked on all sides of culinary publishing. In addition to developing recipes and food styling for some of her favorite brands, she's currently working on her fourth cookbook. In this episode, you'll discover the essential equipment for capturing mouthwatering food photos, how props can make or break your shots, and the role of color theory in food photography. Key points discussed include: - Invest in a quality camera and lens: Having the right equipment, such as a DSLR camera and a versatile zoom lens, can make a significant difference in your food photography. - Use a sturdy tripod: A geared tripod, like the Manfrotto, allows you to achieve precise angles and compositions for your shots. - Experiment with budget-friendly props: Look for unique items at thrift stores, fabric shops, and even your own home to create visually appealing scenes. - Embrace color theory: Understand how complementary colors can enhance the visual appeal of your food photos. - Prioritize composition: Use odd numbers, multiples, and strategic placement to guide the viewer's eye through your images. - Enhance food appearance: Techniques like brushing cheese with oil or using thickened syrups can help make your food look fresh and irresistible. - Embrace the "mess": Don't be afraid to capture the natural imperfections and realistic details that make your food photos more approachable. - Practice and trust your intuition: Continuous practice, studying other photographers' work, and having confidence in your own style are key to improving your food photography. #529 In this episode of the podcast, I chat with Karen Doughman, a middle school English teacher turned photographer. We dive into Karen's journey, her struggles with self-doubt, and her strategies to overcome them. Karen shares her experiences from joining the photography community during COVID, her ambitions to evoke memories through her photos, and her aspirations to master lighting. THE BIG IDEASOvercoming Self-Doubt: Acknowledge your fears but don't let them hold you back. Build confidence by taking your camera with you everywhere. Embrace Imperfection: Let go of the need for complete control in every shot, allowing for creativity and spontaneity. Focus on Authenticity: Aim to evoke genuine emotions and memories in your photos, rather than seeking perfection. Persistent Practice: Consistent practice and learning from feedback are key to gradually enhancing your photography skills.PHOTOGRAPHY ACTION PLANCarry Your Camera Everywhere: Make it a habit to bring your camera to all your daily activities, even if you don't intend to shoot. Challenge yourself with small, spontaneous photography projects to get more comfortable shooting in various settings.Work on Lighting: Observe how natural light changes throughout the day and practice shooting in different lighting conditions. Use simple tools like reflectors or white cards to manipulate light and learn how it affects your subjects.Embrace Spontaneity: Engage in Raymond Hatfield's challenge to take 100 photos within 10 minutes to push your creative boundaries. Photograph a family member jumping, focusing on capturing their movement and expressions rather than aiming for flawless shots.Build a Support Network: Join local photography groups or online communities to share your work, receive feedback, and connect with other photographers. Actively participate in discussions and group activities to gain new perspectives and techniques.Plan and Execute Creative Projects: Brainstorm and plan a thematic photo shoot with a clear vision. Execute your planned shoot, taking time to set up props and lighting, then reflect on the results to identify areas for improvement and celebrate your progress.RESOURCES:Visit Karen Doughman's Website - https://doughmanphotography.mypixieset.com/Follow Karen Doughman on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/doughman_photography/Take the 2025 BPP Listener Survey and help me to create the resources that will help you grow as a photographer in 2025!https://beginnerphotopod.com/surveyConnect with the Beginner Photography Podcast! In episode 597, Megan chats to Melodee Fiske about how food bloggers can hire a trained food photographer to scale their business and why it's important to hire a specialised photographer. Melodee is the creator and owner of Pretty Focused. She's a wife, homeschool mom and a second grade teacher turned food photographer. Melodee started working as a food photographer for food bloggers in 2016. In 2017, she started to have friends ask her to teach them how to do it too, so she did, and that's when Pretty Focused was born. Since then, she's had over 1,000 students join Pretty Focused to learn how to photograph food for food bloggers. Melodee connects them with potential clients inside their marketplace when they graduate. Over the last 3 years, 69% of our grads reported making $50,000+ working as food photographers for bloggers. In this episode, you'll learn about the benefits of outsourcing food photography, the strategies Melodee teaches in her Pretty Focused course, and how to become a trained food photographer to generate extra income. Key points discussed: - Hiring out photography is not a weakness: It is a strength that allows you to focus on growth and vision for your business. - Communication is key when handing over your brand's photography: Effectively communicating your brand and vision ensures the photographer can represent your blog well. - Pretty Focused teaches photography skills tailored for food bloggers: The course covers a variety of photography skills specific to the needs of food bloggers. - Pretty Focused provides coaching and community support: In addition to photography training, the course includes coaching and a supportive community. - Graduates earn significant income: Many graduates have been able to make substantial income working as food photographers for bloggers. - The Buyers Club connects trained photographers with food bloggers: This community facilitates connections between food bloggers and qualified photographers. - Outsourcing photography enables business expansion: Some bloggers have been able to start additional sites due to the ability to outsource their photography. - Make decisions based on your unique business needs: Avoid basing decisions solely on what others think and focus on what is right for your specific business Connect with Melodee Fiske Website | Instagram
In episode 591, Megan chats to Alexandra Shytsman about how to avoid 7 common food photography mistakes beginners make, including lighting, angle and styling mistakes. Alexandra Shytsman is a recipe developer, food photographer, and creator of The New Baguette, a plant-based recipe site. Her mission is to inspire people to cook healthier plant-centered meals at home. She is the author of Friendsgiving, co-author of The Complete Vegan Cookbook, and contributes to sites like Simply Recipes and EatingWell. She has also been teaching in-person food photography classes (in groups and one-on-one) since 2018. Originally from Ukraine, Alex moved to New York City at a young age and has lived there ever since. In this episode, you'll learn more about using natural light versus artificial light, the correct angle for shooting food, which garnishes to use and which ones to avoid and how to make boring food stand out. Key points discussed: - Lighting is crucial: Use natural light or photography-specific equipment, rather than overhead kitchen lights, to achieve flattering and accurate food photography. - Avoid tilted angles: Keep the camera horizon straight to create a more natural and comfortable viewing experience for the audience. - Provide context: Zooming out to show the entire plate or scene, rather than just a close-up, helps provide context and balance to the image. - Choose props carefully: Neutral-colored, non-distracting props are recommended to avoid drawing attention away from the food. - Are your photos in focus? Learning to use the camera in manual mode and checking focus before finalizing the shot can help ensure crisp, in-focus images. - Garnishes can transform boring photos: Adding thoughtful garnishes, such as herbs, spices, or seeds, can enhance the visual appeal of the food. - Plan before you shoot: Creating a mood board and shot list beforehand can help streamline the photography process and ensure all necessary shots are captured. - Embrace negative space: Allowing for some empty space around the food can create a more balanced and visually appealing composition.
