In this episode of the Beginner Photography Podcast, I chat with Joe McNally, a renowned photographer known for his daring and diverse career. Joe shares gripping stories from helicopter photo shoots to capturing unique subway moments with Tony Bennet. He delves into the evolving landscape of the photography industry, stressing adaptability, the critical role of lighting, and the power of authentic storytelling. THE BIG IDEASAdaptability is Key: The photography industry is always changing. Be ready to pivot and explore different paths to stay relevant. The Power of Light: Master lighting to influence and enhance your photos, giving character to your subjects and depth to your stories.Own Your Mistakes: Embrace and learn from your errors. They are valuable lessons that shape you into a better photographer.Seek Adventure: Push yourself to capture compelling images. Step out of your comfort zone and let the story unfold naturally.PHOTOGRAPHY ACTION PLANMaster Lighting Techniques: Experiment with various lighting setups, including natural, studio, and mixed lighting. Study how light interacts with different surfaces and subjects, and practice using reflectors and diffusers.Develop Storytelling Skills: Create a series of photos that tells a compelling story, such as a day in the life of a local artisan.Focus on capturing authentic moments and emotions, not just technically perfect shots.Expand Your Skill Set: Try photographing different genres, like portraiture, landscape, or street photography, to broaden your experience. Take a challenging assignment, even if it's pro bono, to push your limits and grow.Build a Strong Portfolio: Curate a collection of your best work, focusing on diversity and range. Regularly update your portfolio to reflect your growth and current style.Embrace Continuous Learning: Attend photography workshops or online courses to learn new skills and techniques. Follow and analyze the work of photographers you admire, taking notes on what makes their photos successful.Resources:Check out Joe's book, The Real Deal  - https://amzn.to/3xedGBeFollow Joe on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/joemcnallyphoto/ Check out Joe McNally's Website - https://joemcnally.com/Download your free copy of 46 Creative Photo Ideas to Get You Out of a Rutat https://creativeimageideas.com/ Connect with the Beginner Photography Podcast! One of my favorite parts of doing this podcast is that I get to discover and meet some amazing photographers, and L.A. based Nikon Ambassador Joey Terrill is a perfect example. We've all joked about a photographer we know being able to "shoot anything", but in reality very few people can truly shoot any subject matter. There are a few out there though, Joe McNally comes to mind, that just get it. Their photography seems to breath it's own air, and be alive. Joey is one of those talents. His career has included a range of specialties including architecture and interior design, advertising and corporate photography, golf course landscapes, and editorial portraiture, and his macro photography is fascinating. Joey's website has three galleries, Portraits, Scenes, and Macro, and if you spend a little time there you'll get some insight into how Joey sees the world. Perhaps this quote from his website sums it up best: "My camera is the window through which I experience life" From extreme close-up or a vast valley, to a portrait of a corporate CEO made to look like a star, Mr. Terrill just seems to understand what we are doing when we take a photo. He understands how to make a viewer feel something, as though they've been invited into the scene. That, my friend, is a skill I wish I had. Joey has worked with clients like American Express, Coca-Cola, Disney, Golf Digest, Major League Baseball, Nikon, Red Bull and Sports Illustrated. As an educator he teaches workshops and speaks at seminars including PhotoPlus Expo, WPPI, CES, Imaging USA, and of course Nikon School. Join photographer and Nikon Ambassador Joey Terrill and me as we dive into the artistic world of his macro photography, on this Behind the Shot. Like good acting—and skilled retouching—masterful lighting is an accomplished skill that should remain mostly unseen. This is the takeaway from our conversations with two great lighting whisperers, Canon technical advisor Eric Stoner and Nikon Ambassador Joe McNally. We sat down with both of these experts earlier this year at B&H's 2023 Depth of Field Conference.   Our first guest is Eric Stoner, a Canon technical advisor who specializes in creating portraits with Speedlites and colored gels. He offers insights about the high degree of control these tools provide, describing how adding colored gels boosts creative improvisation and heightens impact. We also discuss the technological advances of the past 20 years, while reflecting on how great photography still hinges on learning the craft and connecting with your subjects.   After a break, Nikon Ambassador Joe McNally discusses his mission to light photographs in a way that provides an unfettered experience for the viewer. In addition, we explore his long and successful career as a working professional, from his formative years as a LIFE magazine staff photographer to the recent exhibition of those very same images in a fine art gallery. Stay to the end to learn about his latest book The Real Deal, which he wrote during COVID, and hear about his busy schedule of international workshops.  Guests: Eric Stoner & Joe McNally For more information on our guests and the gear they use, see: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/podcasts/photography/lighting-whisperers Above photograph © Joe McNally Stay Connected: Eric Stoner Website: https://www.mystonegallery.net/ Eric Stoner Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ericstonerphoto Joe McNally Website: https://joemcnally.com Joe McNally Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/joemcnallyphoto Joe McNally Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/joemcnallyphoto Joe McNally YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/joemcnallyphoto Joe McNally Twitter: https://twitter.com/JoeMcNallyPhoto Joe McNally Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com/joemcnallyphoto

**Correction: I misspoke when I said that Josh Taylor's trainer was Ben Davidson, when it's no longer him and is now Joe McNally. This is pivotal since I believe that this fight actually can be greatly influenced by the trainers. I believe this move may help Taylor, though there can also be a transitional impact too. I'll go with the positive influence, coming off Taylor's bad performance with Catterall. And as far as Lopez, good or bad his father isn't going anywhere and the kid believes in him.**Teddy Atlas and co-host Ken Rideout discuss the weekend's fights with more corruption in boxing and poor scoring over in the UFC. Today's guest, former White House photographer Pete Souza, is a bucket-list item for me. I started Behind the Shot because I am a fan of great photography, or more specifically great photographers. Through the over six years I have been doing the show, I have had a range of guests, in a range of genres, from legends, to people I wasn't aware of before asking them to be on the show. While I have discovered many amazing creatives through doing this podcast, when I started there were a few specific people I hoped would someday be on the show. Joe McNally checked off one of those boxes last year when he came on for the show Master of Light, and again when he helped with the show on the Best Photo Advice You've Been Given. Scott Kelby has now been on a few times, with Insights From Scott Kelby and Timeless Photography. Trey Ratcliff stopped by twice, for Raise Your Dynamic Range and Documenting Burning Man, Christie Goodwin did Fireworks, Ed Sheeran: Memories We Made, and also helped with the Best Photo Advice You've Been Given show, and Rick Sammon, David Bergman, and Don Komarechka each have been here too many times to list. Well, today checks off the name I never thought I would get, and excited doesn't begin to cover what I am feeling. Often described as the White House photographer for the eight years of the Obama administration, Mr. Souza's career, and influence on the industry, is so much more than that. Pete Souza is a best-selling author, speaker and freelance photographer. His actual title during the Obama years was Chief Official White House Photographer and the Director of the White House photo office. That job alone would instill fear in most photographers, but Souza has done it more than once! He was also the Official White House Photographer for Ronald Reagan. As an author, Pete has written some of the definitive books related to White House photography. His book, Obama: An Intimate Portrait, was published in 2017, and debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list, and to date it is one of the best-selling photography books of all time. His 2018 book, Shade: A Tale of Two Presidents, also debuted at #1 on the New York Times bestseller list. Shade is a portrait in Presidential contrasts, telling the tale of the Obama and Trump administrations through a series of visual juxtapositions. His most recent book, The West Wing and Beyond: What I Saw Inside the Presidency, was published in September 2022. This book lets us behind the scenes of the West Wing — and into the Oval Office, the Situation Room, aboard Air Force One, and beyond — in intimate detail. Based on his best-selling books, Souza became the subject of a documentary film, The Way I See It, in November 2020.  If you haven't seen it, I can't recommend it enough. It is absolute fantastic. The film takes an unprecedented look behind the scenes of two of the most iconic Presidents in history, Barack Obama and Ronald Reagan, as seen through Souza's eyes and camera. As Official White House Photographer for both these Presidents, Souza was an eyewitness to the unique and tremendous responsibilities of being the most powerful man in the world. The film also reveals how Souza transformed from a respected White House photographer and photojournalist to a searing commentator on the importance of having someone with empathy and dignity in the office of the Presidency. In addition to the national political scene, Souza has covered stories around the world. After 9/11, he was among the first journalists to cover the fall of Kabul, Afghanistan, after crossing the Hindu Kush mountains by horseback in three feet of snow. While at the Chicago Tribune, Souza was also part of the staff awarded the Pulitzer Prize in 2001 for explanatory reporting on the airline industry. As an educator, Pete Souza is Professor Emeritus of Visual Communication at Ohio University, and as a lecturer he is in high demand. He has lectured on his photography at the Smithson...

Brommer will give us a sense of the updated conference, which after two years online is now a fully hybrid in-person and online event. Of course, we at the B&H Photography Podcast look forward to being back at the live events and talking with the many photographers who speak and present their work.    This year's OPTIC Conference runs from June 12–15, 2022, and includes presentations by Chester Higgins, Camille Seaman, Joe McNally, and many others. There are also opportunities to try the latest gear in specialized environments, expert-led panels, portfolio reviews, a sunset cruise, the OPTIC Challenge Print Competition, and OPTIC Signature Photo Walks sponsored by Lindblad Expeditions. Online participants can check the selection of available webinars.   After our brief chat with Brommer, we present a very important encore episode—important in the sense that it was our first recording at OPTIC, back in 2016, and because we interviewed three incredible photographers and really began to understand the potential of our podcast. Our guests were Michael Kenna and, in another segment, Paul Caponigro and his son John Paul Caponigro. Each of these photographers offer wonderful insights into their creative processes and to speak with father and son artists is always a treat. Joe McNally has been writing a book for the last two years. He's been thinking about it for the last five. And living it for the last 40, as an internationally acclaimed photographer whose award-winning work has appeared in numerous magazines, including National Geographic, Time, LIFE, Sports Illustrated, and more. In The Real Deal: Field Notes from the Life of a Working Photographer, McNally, a Nikon Ambassador, tells you how it all started in 1976 as a Daily News copyboy (“the wretched dog of the newsroom”), and candidly shares stories, lessons, and insights he has collected along the way. The Real Deal is not a dedicated how-to book about “where to put the light,” though there is instructional information to be gleaned here. Instead, it's simply a collection of candid “field notes”—some short, some quite long—gathered over time that, together, become an intimate look behind the lens at a photographer who has pretty much seen and done it all.
