From meditation to meal sharing, daily rituals and habits have the power to bring out the best in your talent. Rei welcomes back Haruka Aoki, a Japanese poet and illustrator, to discuss Haruka's unique creative processes, aspirations to expand into various mediums, and day-to-day specifics of how they make a living as an artist. Haruka's artistic process combines writing and illustrating with deeper emotional connections and cultural expressions. Through detailed anecdotes and personal reflections, they share how a structured routine—consisting of activities like meditation, stretching, and maintaining a consistent work attire—fuels creativity and productivity.Haruka Aoki is a queer Japanese poet-illustrator and hope bender. They write and illustrate a regular narrative art column in The New York Times. Their picture book about a square navigating a world of circles, "Fitting In," was published in 2022 by Sky Pony Press / Simon & Schuster. Haruka's narrative artwork aims to inspire individuals with both wit and sincerity as their hand-drawn characters engage the world around them. Growing up often unsure of where “home” would be next, Haruka has befriended the abundant imagination found in nature and community, a constant starting point in their work. By foraging inspiration from ancestral and metaphysical realms to nurture their artistic practice, they hope to grow and provide an accessible space for collective healing. Haruka often feels deeply grateful to be an earthling.Timestamps:0:03 Haruka Aoki's Artistic Journey and Future Aspirations8:08 The Joy of Sharing Life's Simple Pleasures Through Art9:40 Creating Art Through Rituals and Structured Work Habits14:23 Empowerment and Assurance in Career and Personal Growth17:04 Habits and Rituals That Enhance Artistic Creativity17:36 Key TakeawayEpisode References:Haruka Aoki | WebsiteHaruka Aoki | NewsletterHaruka Aoki | InstagramRei Inamoto | InstagramI&CO | Corporate SiteSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Nostalgia Test Podcast

Dan & Manny are joined by friend of the show, artist & pop culture enthusiast Andrew Breen to put the 1989 fantasy comedy horror film Little Monsters to the ultimate test—THE NOSTALGIA TEST! “Little Monsters is one of the most repellent, distasteful, truly creepy movies I've seen in a long time, a movie so unpleasant I can't really figure out why anybody wanted to make it, and I don't know why anybody would wanna see it.” -Roger Ebert It's officially Spooky Season and what better way to celebrate than to put one of the weirdest and creepiest movies ever made to the ultimate test. Little Monsters makes the plot of every David Lynch film look totally normal. This movie was suggested by the guest, Andrew Breen, who's an amazing artist and a pop culture nerd like Dan & Manny. Little Monsters looks like a club Bill Hader's SNL character Stefon would be partying at until everyone turns into a pile of clothes. This movie has everything, Fred Savage, Daniel Stern on the verge of murdering his whole family, the woman who owned The Cleveland Indians in Major League, and a monster named Snick, who's a cigarette cross from between the girl who turned into a blueberry before she died in Willy Wonka and a broke down Meatloaf. Not to mention a PCP riddled Howie Mandal as Maurice the monster, who is an eleven-year-old/200-year-old blue lunatic getting children grounded, yelled at, and probably hit (hey, it's the 80s). So set your monster catching traps, make your peanut butter and onion sandwiches, make sure to check the apple juice before you drink it, and come hangout as we see if Little Monsters passes The Nostalgia Test. Have you ever considered that the most profound creative education might not happen in a classroom? What if it unfolds in the buzz of a print shop or behind the lens at a world-changing cultural event? In this episode, I sit down with legendary photographer Roy Lewis, whose journey is a powerful testament to learning by doing. Roy shares how his early days in a Mississippi print shop ignited his creative spark, leading to an unconventional path where Ebony and Jet magazines became his university. He offers a firsthand account of documenting FESTAC '77, the monumental gathering of Black artists and intellectuals in Lagos, Nigeria, and explains how these experiences shaped his iconic eye. This conversation is an intimate look into a life spent capturing our stories, reminding us that the richest lessons often come from the journey itself, not a predetermined map. Visionary contemporary artist Kent Monkman invites us into the brilliantly transformative world of his creative endeavors, where art becomes a powerful tool for rewriting history. As Kent prepares to showcase "History is Painted by the Victors" at the Denver Art Museum, he shares how childhood visits to museums in Winnipeg ignited his mission to challenge the biased portrayals of Indigenous peoples. With a masterful blend of beauty and humor, Kent's work confronts the misrepresentations by 19th-century settler artists, urging a reevaluation of the narratives that have long marginalized Indigenous voices.Step into the intriguing realm of Miss Chief Eagle Testicle, Kent's dynamic alter ego, who boldly subverts the gaze of traditional settler artists. This character, embodying gender fluidity and empowered sexuality, serves as a beacon of reclamation and resilience, offering a Cree perspective that reclaims Indigenous stories within art history. From abstract painting to a distinct representational style, Kent's artistic evolution reflects a deep homage to Indigenous traditions while innovatively engaging with historical narratives. We also explore Kent's journey beyond visual art, transitioning into literary storytelling with the memoirs of Miss Chief. In collaboration with Giselle Gordon, Kent weaves North American history with Cree cosmology, offering fresh perspectives that continue to challenge perceptions. The conversation extends to the profound impact of his exhibition "Shame and Prejudice" across Canada, fueling awareness of residential schools and highlighting the resilience of Indigenous communities. Kent's work is not just art; it's a legacy paving the way for future generations of Indigenous artists, fostering a renewed hope for a world where authentic representation and acceptance are the norm.Find out more about his exhibit here: https://www.denverartmuseum.org/en/exhibitions/kent-monkman

I've been telling you that I'm leveling up this podcast. Today's episode proves it!  I had the absolute honor of sitting down with Sophie Mazzaro, a world-renowned mural artist, sneaker customizer, and creative force whose journey is anything but ordinary. From her roots as a German exchange student in Texas to painting the now-iconic Kobe Bryant mural on the Venice Beach Pier, Sophie's story is a masterpiece. Every connection she made along the way contributed to the stunning tapestry of her artistic journey. As I interview Sophie Mazzaro for The Ripple Effect Podcast, she opens up about her early days growing up in Berlin, her move to LA to chase an acting dream, and how that world led her straight into the life of a full-time artist and entrepreneur. Despite growing up with parents in the IT industry, Sophie went in the opposite direction and pursued the creative route. She's worked on custom sneakers, tattooed incredible pieces, and painted massive murals, including one from the 72nd floor of the tallest building in LA.  What blew me away was Sophie's unfiltered honesty about the artistic grind: how she navigates creative burnout and the realities behind the “starving artist” perspective. We talk about the emotional story behind her Kobe Bryant tribute, building a business around her art, and her bold new chapter living in Wyoming, painting breathtaking wildlife pieces inspired by her surroundings. If you've ever wanted to know how to turn art into a business, what it's like to be a mural artist, or how to make it as a creative, this episode will empower you. This isn't just another artist interview. This is the story of a woman unapologetically forging her own path, one brushstroke at a time. Listen and get inspired by one of the most creative and driven artists of our time. This is Sophie Mazzaro, and this is her Ripple Effect. PS.
