From Documents concerning the life and character of Emanuel Swedenborg by Tafel, J. F. I. (Johann Friedrich Immanuel), 1796-1863; Smithson, J. H. (John Henry), 1803-1877, ed. and tr; Bush, George, 1796-1859, ed, Vol 1. HIS LETTERS TO DR. OETINGER. Pg 153 Document 25 Concerning the Natural and Spiritual Sense of the Word. That there is an internal or spiritual sense in the Word, in its external or natural sense, as a diamond in its matrix, or as a beautiful infant in its swaddling clothes, is a truth which has heretofore been altogether unknown in the Christian world, and hence also it is altogether unknown what is meant by the Consummation of the Age, the Coming of the Lord, the Last Judgment, and by the New Jerusalem, on which subjects many things are spoken and predicted in the Word of each Testament, both Old and New. Without the unfolding and unswathing of the literal sense of the Word by its spiritual sense, who can know intellectually what is signified by the things which the Lord predicted in Matt, xxiv., and also in the Revelations, and in like manner in Daniel, and in the Prophets, in many passages. Make the experiment yourself, if you are so disposed, by reading those passages of the prophetical Word, which treat sometimes of wild beasts and cattle, sometimes of forests and brakes, sometimes of valleys and mountains, sometimes of bats, of ochim, tziim, satyrs ; try whether you can perceive anything Divine therein, unless you believe it to lie concealed inwardly, inasmuch as it was inspired of God, just as a diamond lies concealed in its matrix, as was said above. That the diamonds, or treasures, which lie concealed within, are those things which the internal sense contains, is fully demonstrated in the doctrine of the New Jerusalem, concerning the Sacred Scripture, 5-26 : and in the same doctrine it is further proved, that the literal sense is the basis, continent, and firmament of its spiritual sense, 27-36 ; also, that the Divine truth in the literal sense of the Word is in its fulness, in" its sanctity, and in its power, 37-49 ; and, likewise, that the doctrine of the church is to be drawn from the literal sense of the Word, and to be confirmed thereby, 50-61 ; and, moreover, that by the literal sense of the Word, through the medium of its spiritual sense, there is effected conjunction with the Lord, and consociation with the angels, 62-69. Exodus 8. 1. And Jehovah said unto Moses, Say unto Aaron, Stretch forth thy hand with thy rod over the streams, over the rivers, and over the pools, and cause frogs to come up upon the land of Egypt. 2. And Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt; and the frogs came up, and covered the land of Egypt. 3. And the magicians of Egypt did so with their enchantments, and caused frogs to come up upon the land of Egypt. 4. And Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron, and said, Supplicate ye unto Jehovah that He remove the frogs from me and from my people; and I will let the people go, that they may sacrifice to Jehovah. 5. And Moses said unto Pharaoh, Have thou honor over me, till when shall I supplicate for thee, and for thy servants, and for thy people, to cut off the frogs from thee, and from thy houses? Only in the river shall they be left. 6. And he said, Unto the morrow. And he said, Be it according to thy word; that thou mayest know that there is none like Jehovah our God. 7. And the frogs shall be removed from thee, and from thy houses, and from thy servants, and from thy people; only in the river shall they be left. 8. And Moses and Aaron went out from before Pharaoh; and Moses cried unto Jehovah upon the word of the frogs which He had laid on Pharaoh. 9. And Jehovah did according to the word of Moses; and the frogs died out of the houses, out of the courts, and out of the fields. 10. And they gathered them together in heaps and heaps; and the land stank. 11. And Pharaoh saw that there was breathing, and he made heavy his heart, and heard them not,

Very Dental: Is the Hygiene Model Broken with Dr. Jason Smithson

Alan is joined once again by the one and only Dr. Jason Smithson. We've often compared how dentistry is delivered differently between the United States and the UK, but today we compare how dental hygiene is delivered differently.  Summary: Dr. Alan Mead and Dr. Jason Smithson discuss the stark differences in how dental hygiene is approached in the United States versus the UK. They explore the reasons behind these differences, including insurance models, historical practices, and the perceived value of hygiene appointments by patients. The conversation also touches upon the role of diagnosis, consent, and duty of care in dental treatment. Key Discussion Points: Jason's Current Activities: Dr. Smithson discusses his teaching schedule at Spear Education, including new courses on aging teeth and other advanced restorative techniques. He also mentions his work in Australia and Europe. The Hygienist Shortage: Alan describes his difficulty in finding a hygienist due to increased pay demands and a shrinking pool of candidates. This leads into the core discussion of the episode. US vs. UK Hygiene Models: US: Hygienists are often the primary point of contact for patients, with a focus on regular cleanings regardless of individual needs and disease. The system is largely insurance-driven. Patients often prioritize the cleaning over the dentist's exam. UK: Dentists assess patients first, determining recall intervals based on risk factors (caries, periodontal disease, wear). Hygienist appointments are prescribed by the dentist and are therapy-focused (e.g., scaling and root planing for periodontal disease). Healthy patients may not see a hygienist at all. Value Perception: Jason argues that the US system can make hygiene seem like a cosmetic procedure, diminishing its perceived value, especially for healthy patients. The UK model ties hygiene to specific therapeutic needs, increasing its perceived value. Insurance and Payment Models: The discussion touches on the differences between NHS (government-funded) and private dental care in the UK, as well as the impact of insurance on treatment decisions in the US. The UK has a mixed system, while Dr. Smithson's practice is entirely fee-for-service. Direct Access Hygiene (UK): In the UK, patients can directly access hygienists without a dentist's referral. This is uncommon in the US. Diagnosis and Consent: Jason highlights the importance of explicit diagnosis before treatment, emphasizing that informed consent cannot be obtained without a diagnosis. He suggests that the US system sometimes relies on implicit diagnoses. Duty of Care: Jason explains the concept of duty of care in the UK, stating that dentists assume responsibility for a patient's care once treatment begins. This raises questions about the US system and potential legal implications. Efficiency and Multitasking: The conversation explores the inefficiency of jumping between patients and procedures, including hygiene checks during restorative work. Jason cites research on the negative impact of multitasking on quality and productivity. Patient Expectations: The discussion acknowledges that US patients have been conditioned to expect regular cleanings, even when not clinically necessary. This creates a challenge for dentists who might want to shift to a more therapy-focused model. Join Host Lyle Perez for a chilling finale to the Haunted America series as he explores the haunted history of Washington, D.C., on Halloween night. As the center of political power, the nation's capital holds layers of dark secrets, historic tragedies, and spectral presences. From the halls of the White House to the eerie streets of Lafayette Square, D.C. is alive with ghostly tales that reveal a side of history rarely discussed. Grab a warm drink, dim the lights, and get ready for a journey into the capital's haunted sites. Featured Locations: The White House 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20500 Home to more than just presidents, the White House hosts famous spirits like Abraham Lincoln, who's been seen by countless staff and guests. Queen Wilhelmina even fainted upon seeing his apparition. Dolley Madison is rumored to protect the Rose Garden, while Abigail Adams' ghost has been seen in the East Room. Public tours offer a glimpse into the residence, though ghostly encounters are never guaranteed. The Octagon House 1799 New York Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20006 This unique mansion, built in 1801, is haunted by the spirits of two Tayloe daughters who fell to their deaths in the staircase. Visitors report hearing footsteps, doors slamming, and feeling watched, especially in the ballroom. The house is open as a museum, inviting visitors to learn about its tragic history. The Capitol Building First St SE, Washington, D.C. 20004 The U.S. Capitol is haunted by the mysterious “Demon Cat,” a ghostly omen of disaster, and by John Quincy Adams, who collapsed and died in the building. Cold spots, whispers, and eerie figures are common, particularly in the rotunda. Guided tours provide access to this historical—and haunted—monument. Lafayette Square Across from the White House, Lafayette Square's dark past is marked by murder and scandal. The ghost of Philip Barton Key II, murdered by Congressman Daniel Sickles, is said to roam here. Shadowy figures and phantom gunshots disturb this otherwise serene park, making it a must-visit for thrill-seekers. The Old Stone House 3051 M St NW, Washington, D.C. 20007 Dating back to 1765, the Old Stone House is D.C.'s oldest unchanged structure. It's haunted by “George,” a spectral carpenter, and a child who tugs at visitors' clothing. Guests report feeling cold hands and hearing whispers, adding to its allure as a museum with deep-rooted mysteries. The National Theatre 1321 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, D.C. 20004 Known as “The Theatre of Presidents,” the National Theatre is haunted by the “Lady in White,” seen backstage and in the audience. Disembodied laughter and footsteps heighten its ghostly charm. Patrons attending performances may find themselves in the presence of D.C.'s most dedicated spectral audience. The Exorcist Steps, Georgetown 36th St NW & Prospect St NW, Washington, D.C. 20007 Made famous by The Exorcist, these narrow steps hold an ominous presence. Many report feeling watched or hearing footsteps echoing behind them, especially at night. It's a notorious location for those seeking real-life frights in the heart of Georgetown. The Hay-Adams Hotel 800 16th St NW, Washington, D.C. 20006 Overlooking Lafayette Square, the Hay-Adams Hotel is haunted by the spirit of Clover Adams, whose presence is felt through cold spots, flickering lights, and the scent of lavender. The fourth floor is particularly active, drawing guests who hope for a ghostly encounter during their stay. The Smithsonian Castle 1000 Jefferson Dr SW, Washington, D.C. 20560 James Smithson, the Smithsonian's founder, is said to haunt this Gothic structure. His spirit has been seen in the hallways, with footsteps and ghostly whispers adding to the building's aura. Visitors can explore the castle's history and perhaps feel Smithson's presence watching over his legacy. The Congressional Cemetery 1801 E St SE, Washington, D.C. 20003 This historic cemetery is home to prominent figures, and visitors often report eerie encounters, including the spirit of Clara Barton. Ghost tours reveal the haunted side of this iconic cemetery, with flickering lights and murmurs from beyond. In this week's episode of SheEO Lead-In, host Rebecca Jones engages in a thought-provoking discussion with Holly Smithson, President and CEO of Athena. Athena's mission is to advance 1 million women in STEM , by 2030. With only 1 in 4 STEM jobs held by women, their challenge is to educate and advocate for closing the gender gap and seeding greater innovation through diversity. Holly went from running a global leadership lab to running a proverbial crime lab now that multiple state's enacted legislation and pending lawsuits against diversity programs at colleges and corporations. Despite clear evidence that diversity drives significantly greater profits in companies, shareholder value and innovation cycles, its apparent this society is driven by somethings else entirely. The conversation delves into the critical importance of resilience and support for women in leadership roles. Holly shares her personal experiences and highlights the necessity of diverse perspectives to drive innovation and growth. She and Rebecca explore the roles of confidence-building, leadership development, and role models in empowering women to overcome fear and achieve their full potential.Together, Rebecca and Holly emphasize the value of recognizing and leveraging diverse perspectives, modeling positive behaviors and core values, and extending grace to others. Their discussion underscores the importance of fostering a culture of collaboration and inclusivity.Thank you for being a part of the SheEO Lead-In community!

Today is Wednesday, May 15th, and Happy 70th Birthday to MLB HOF George Brett. ***05.15.24 – BIRTHDAY – GEORGE BRETT*** I'm Bruce Jenkins and here are your top stories presented by KIA Mall of Georgia. Ohio man convicted of molesting 8-year-old girl Cocaine trafficker sentenced to life in prison Gwinnett's judicial candidates weigh in on the court system's biggest challenges Plus, my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on diabetes. All of this and more is coming up on the Gwinnett Daily Post podcast, and if you are looking for community news, we encourage you to listen daily and subscribe! Break 1: MOG   STORY 1: Ohio man convicted of molesting 8-year-old girl In 2019, Kevin McKenna, a 66-year-old Ohio man, molested an 8-year-old girl in Lawrenceville and Loganville, Georgia, multiple times. Last week, a jury convicted him on charges including aggravated sexual battery and child molestation. He received a life sentence plus 20 years and will be registered as a sex offender for life. Gwinnett County District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson condemned his actions, emphasizing the trauma inflicted on the victim and the relentless pursuit of justice by the Special Victims Unit. The victim reported the crimes in 2021, detailing instances where McKenna touched her inappropriately and attempted sexual contact. STORY 2: Cocaine trafficker sentenced to life in prison Glenn Smithson, aged 52, was recently convicted and sentenced to life in prison without parole for trafficking cocaine in Gwinnett County for over three decades. The conviction followed a bench trial where he confessed to his involvement in trafficking drugs investigated in 2021. Prosecutors highlighted the efforts of law enforcement, particularly the Gwinnett County Police Narcotics Unit, in dismantling his criminal operation. Investigations revealed Smithson's activities through wiretaps and surveillance, leading to his arrest after a traffic stop where cocaine was found in his possession. This sentencing marks the end of a long history of drug-related convictions spanning 30 years. District Attorney Patsy Austin-Gatson emphasized the community's safety with Smithson behind bars. STORY 3: Gwinnett's judicial candidates weigh in on the court system's challenges In Gwinnett County's upcoming judicial races, candidates address pressing issues such as mental health in court proceedings and fairness in treatment. State Court Judge Shawn Bratton emphasizes civility and respect in the diverse community, while Deputy District Attorney Ramona Toole highlights the need to tackle case backlogs through proactive scheduling. In the Superior Court races, candidates stress equality and individualized approaches to justice. Juvenile Court Judge Rodney Harris advocates for equal treatment regardless of representation, while Magistrate Judge Kimberly Gallant supports treatment courts for accountability and recovery. In the race to replace retiring judges, candidates prioritize mental health support for defendants, with B. Thassanee "BT" Gutter-Parker proposing a comprehensive safety plan, Regina Matthews advocating for continued accountability court programs, and Tuwanda Rush Williams emphasizing intervention plans over incarceration for those with mental health diagnoses. Voters can explore detailed candidate responses on gwinnettdailypost.com. We have opportunities for sponsors to get great engagement on these shows. Call 770.874.3200 for more info. We'll be right back Break 2: TOM WAGES STORY 4: Georgia prison inmate pleads guilty in meth conspiracy Christopher David Johnson, aged 46, has pleaded guilty to leading a methamphetamine conspiracy while incarcerated in a Georgia prison. He faces a minimum of 15 years to life in prison for distributing over 500 grams of meth. Johnson orchestrated the operation using multiple cellphones from prison, coordinating with accomplices through Facebook and text messages. His co-conspirator, Michael Paul Brown, was recently sentenced to 15 years for his involvement. The state budget includes $10.7 million for prison technology upgrades to prevent contraband smuggling. The U.S. DEA and law enforcement agencies from Georgia, Tennessee, and Virginia investigated Johnson's case, with his guilty plea entered in federal court in Abingdon, Virginia. STORY 5: Emergency hearing on Mulberry cityhood referendum set for Thursday An emergency hearing has been scheduled by a Gwinnett Superior Court judge regarding a lawsuit aimed at halting the Mulberry cityhood referendum on the May 21 ballot. Filed by retiree Stephen Hughes, the lawsuit contends that key aspects of the proposed city's charter are unconstitutional, including limitations on property tax collection and specified city services. Hughes' attorney argues that the referendum would deceive voters, as the proposed city's structure faces legal challenges. Supporters of Mulberry cityhood, such as Georgia House Majority Leader Chuck Efstration, denounce the lawsuit, alleging it is driven by special interest groups, possibly developers opposing the proposal. Citizens For Mulberry President Michael Coker maintains that cityhood enjoys community support and anticipates its passage, dismissing the lawsuit as a last-minute attempt to derail the referendum. We'll be back in a moment   Break 3: INGLES  10   STORY 6: LEAH MCGRATH And now here is my conversation with Leah McGrath from Ingles Markets on diabetes.   STORY 7: LEAH MCGRATH ***LEAH MCGRATH INERVIEW***   We'll have final thoughts after this.   Break 4: SCANDRETT Signoff – Thanks again for hanging out with us on today's Gwinnett Daily Post Podcast. Embark on an enlightening exploration with Drew Smithson, whose journey from healthcare executive to lifestyle medicine advocate epitomizes the transformative power of wellness. Throughout our conversation, Drew opens up about his career evolution, fueled by an unwavering passion for fitness and bolstered by his experiences in nutritional science and healthcare administration. His personal battle with weight gain amidst the pressures of the industry and the pivotal moments leading to the creation of DescendingUpwards are not just his story, but a reflection of the broader struggle within the healthcare sphere to prioritize genuine well-being.In today's healthcare climate, the irony of tireless leaders overlooking their own health is a paradox we unravel with Drew, particularly through the lens of his pilot program aimed at recalibrating the health of those on the front lines.  His transition to a clinical focus showcases an evolving perspective on patient care that champions the proactive integration of lifestyle factors.Lastly, we navigate the synergy of fitness and healthcare, where Drew underscores the pivotal role that exercise professionals should play in patient wellness. Through our discussion, we dissect the opportunities and obstacles of incorporating fitness into traditional healthcare, the potential of wearable technology in everyday fitness routines, and the promising partnerships emerging between health and fitness experts. Drew's experiences and insights offer a compelling blueprint for a more proactive, comprehensive care model, aiming to bridge the gap and enhance the health and well-being of patients everywhere.Show Notes Page: https://wellnessparadoxpod.com/episode119Our Guest: Drew SmithsonFor the past 20yrs, Drew has had a very rewarding and blessed leadership career acting as a mentor, colleague and friend across the continuum of care being Acute, Ambulatory and Post-Acute care.  Drew served in many leadership capacities, but always kept a focus on Clinical Operations because it's where strategy and practice come together to serve the clinical team and ultimately provide the best possible care to the communities they serve.  Life events happen when you least expect them and have the potential to change one's life focus and course.  He had just moved for a new role leading a major tertiary campus.  Soon after his family's arrival, COVID hit and as life changed for many, same did for Drew.  Drew began experiencing health events while working long, strenuous hours in a new home, city, state and organization.  Life events such as major family moves and new jobs can be stressful, but add into it an emerging pandemic and less than ideal health status to the mix.  Within 6-8wks, Drew experienced several health events that led to a hospital visit and soon after several clinic visits that resulted in the words if I don't change my current lifestyle, there is a high probability within 5-10yrs I could have serious health events. This was Drew's major wake up call and led to his re-ignited passion for Medicine and Lifestyle.  While he continues to focus through the lenses of an business leader, his interests and inspirations have shifted towards strategic innovations such as value (health) based care models and clinical integration efforts that are laser-focused on delivering high impact solutions that will imprFollow us on social at the links below: https://www.facebook.com/wellnessparadox https://www.instagram.com/wellnessparadox/ https://www.linkedin.com/company/wellness-paradox-podcast https://twitter.com/WellnessParadox
