Beacon Photo Club to host second book arts fair According to the authorities, the definition of an art book (aka artist's book) is serious stuff. For Printed Matter, a nonprofit bookstore in Manhattan, they are "publications conceived as artworks in their own right." The Center for Book Arts calls them "artistic practices related to the book itself as an art object." Of the 28 vendors exhibiting at the Art Book Fair at the VFW Hall in Beacon on May 16, 13 live in the city or nearby. This is the second iteration of what the Beacon Photo Club intends to be an annual event, according to Emma McDonald Diamond, who founded the group. Broadly, the genre ranges from black-and-white zines to uber-elaborate permutations that make a paperback look like a cave painting. "What binds them is that they're self-published," says Chiara Di Lello, co-founder of the collective Little Histories, which will be there. One creator is Jennifer Lauren Smith, who will share her Weeping European Beech Baby Sleep Tonic. Her website reveals precise details about the binding, paper, color plates and cover, which is giclee on Hahnemühle Photo Rag. All 15 editions were printed, engraved and bound in Beacon. The reception is positive: Reed College will acquire an edition for its art collection (Smith is an alum), and another will be displayed at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Massachusetts beginning June 12. Smith just completed a month-long Interlude Artist residency in Hudson and is in the second year of The Photobook, a long-term residency program with the Penumbra Foundation. "The books are so laborious and precious, I'm almost embarrassed," she says. "But that's why they're expensive [$200 each]. I work in sculpture, so I'm a craftsperson, and I take the materials seriously." Little Histories will present zines with themes, such as using Wordle guesses to create the text. There's also one based on crosswords, says Di Lello, who previously created a formal art book exhibited at a Brooklyn show. The members of Little Histories, including co-founder Chelsea Mize, write personalized poems on the spot with a typewriter, hammering away at a piece of gray paper. "We talk with the person — I call it 'intake' — and figure out where their head is at, and if it's intended for them or someone else," says Di Lello. "They come back later and pick it up. They're not hovering over us." Andrea Moed, a ceramicist, is bringing zines along with hand-drawn comics. The cover of no costume depicts the view from her front door, including the porch, power lines, a pickup truck and her neighbors' houses. Her plans include Street Furniture of Beacon, New York, which will feature "a lot of weird stuff beyond the dummy light" in Beacon, she says. "At the foot of Mount Beacon, near the bus stop, there's some mutant, non-functioning contraption with four prongs." Moed also is a paper engineer (think pop-up books) using the digital Cricut machine at the Desmond-Fish Public library in Garrison to create little lamps. Scrawled on the walls of her studio are instructions for improving panels of her comic Monoculture, along with affirmations like "Less Think More Draw!!!" sketched out in colorful bubble letters. "Many people are tired of being online, and the pendulum is swinging back to tangible interests and hobbies," says McDonald Diamond. "CDs, vinyl records, cassettes and shooting photos with film are making a comeback, and this event reflects all that." The VFW Hall is located at 413 Main St. in Beacon. The Art Book Fair is scheduled for May 16 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free and open to all ages. See beaconphotoclub.com/2026-beacon-art-book-fair.

Every photographer dreams of publishing a book of their photographs. But what exactly does that entail? In today's show, we're going to peek behind the scenes of this complex and daunting process in a chat with two complementary figures who've spent their respective careers helping to redefine what a photo book can be. Starting with three basic questions—Why a book? Why now? And what is the role of a book in your career at this time?—our discussion expands to cover a broad range of concerns. From distinguishing between the many different publishing models available today, to insights on sponsorship and publishing contracts, to tips about marketing and getting people onboard with your project, you'll come away with inventive strategies for publishing your work in book form. We've envisioned this show as an impromptu master class, so get ready to take some notes! Guests: Mary Virginia Swanson & Rick Smolan Episode Timeline: 4:45: Mary Virginia Swanson's basic advice to photographers interested in publishing their photographs in book form, plus the different publishing models available today. 10:22: Rick's start as a freelance photographer and the story behind his shift in roles to launch the Day in the Life book series. 15:04: The importance of sponsorship or in-kind donations, plus innovative strategies for negotiating such deals. 23:04: The two different categories of photo books: greatest hits with the photographer as subject and a book that has a separate subject and overarching story. 27:55: Tips for going on press, advice about publishing contracts, and suggestions for buying back a book before it gets remaindered. 34:54: The issue of vanity presses, and the matter of requiring a subvention from authors to help cover the publisher's costs. 43:03: Publicity and marketing: You are the best salesperson for your book. Tips for getting your book seen and heard about, from magazines to podcasts. 49:08: Episode Break 50:02: Should you create a full mock-up version of a book or just show a publisher a selection of photos? 59:22: Benefits to working with a literary agent when seeking to publish a photo book. 1:01:44: Slicing up the pie by hiring freelaners or finding a partner to share in the work. 1:07:38: The importance of publishing deadlines and many important markers tied to a calendar, plus the cover photo and book blurbs. 1:14:22: Swanson and Smolan on their picks for memorable photo books. 1:25:19: Parting advice about getting other people excited about your project.   Guest Bios: Mary Virginia Swanson has spent her career helping artists find the strengths in their work, identify receptive audiences, and present their personal vision in an informed, professional manner. Her broad background as a photo educator, author, entrepreneur and advisor spans areas of exhibiting, collecting, licensing, and marketing photographs. A few career highlights include working with Ansel Adams to manage education offerings at the Friends of Photography in California, heading Special Projects for Magnum Photos in New York, and founding and directing Swanstock as a unique licensing agency for fine art photographers. Swanson is the recipient of many awards, including the Society for Photographic Education's Honored Educator Award and the FOCUS Award for Lifetime Achievement in Photography from the Griffin Museum in Boston to name just two. In 2011, Swanson co-authored Publish Your Photography Book with Darius Himes, which is now in its third edition. Currently, Swanson works independently from her home base in Tucson, offering classes, workshops and consulting services to artists and arts organizations, serving as an advisor for multiple nonprofits, and giving back through other community-minded activities.  Rick Smolan is both a photographer and an entrepreneur. A former contributor to Time, Life, and National Geographic, he is perhaps best known as creator of the Day in the Life book series, plus subsequent book projects of massive scope. As CEO of the multi-modal company Against All Odds Productions, Smolan designs and executes crowd-sourced, global projects that combine compelling storytelling with state-of-the-art technology. The creative force behind Litoff Studios, Mr. Zach Litoff himself, joins the show today, ready to discuss his new book. Zach seamlessly intertwines athleticism and artistry–blending his elite athletic background as an NCAA Championship steeplechaser with his innovative design work; this has led him to work with major brands like Nike, New Balance, and even Apple.Recently, he led the rebranding of the iconic Bay to Breakers race for their website, infusing it with fresh, modern visuals while honoring its rich history. Zach grew up in Boulder, Colorado, where he became enmeshed at an early age with drawing, climbing and running. At Monarch High School in Colorado he came in third in the state two-mile championships, third in the mile, and fifth in the 800m.At Santa Clara University he helped build a strong program, finishing as an All-American steeplechaser with PRs of 8:32 in the steeple and 13:52 in the 5,000m. Zach went back to Santa Clara and got his Master's in Marketing, and has since started his own company doing design work, marketing, photography, video production, web design, content creation and blog creation. Whew!Zach's latest triumph is a 160-page multimedia art book called "The Last Olympic Trials," which documents his experience at the 2024 U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials in Eugene. It blends film photography, painted-over Polaroids, mixed media, and hand-drawn illustrations to capture the shifting culture of the sportIn today's conversation, Zach takes me through his running pursuits, how he's shifted his identity in the sport and how he's gone about that, his thoughts on Grand Slam track, the story behind his new book "The Last Olympic Trials" and so much more. This is just a good chat between two friends. Welcome inside the world of Lee Williams, the creator behind two of London's photographic institutions- Rapid Eye Darkrooms & the Photobook Cafe - both of which we are proud to say are our neighbours, right here in the heart of Shoreditch. Typically, you'd find our guest for this episode, Lee Williams, behind the scenes, coming up with ideas that foster community and natural habitats for creative humans working in fashion, advertising and film- alongside (unknowingly) being recognised as a mentor to them. In this episode, we're taking you even deeper into Lee's personal story and how he's turned his passion into not one, but two thriving businesses. From leaving his native Wales and working weekends in an East London darkroom,  to receiving a £250 grant from the Princes Trust that led to him setting up his very own, Lee exposes his ambition behind a beloved community institution. And then right back to the present day - on why he encourages photographers to talk about their work during the printing process at Rapid Eye, and how his interest in the concept of  “third spaces”  led to the creation of the Photobook Cafe…It's also important to mention the two powerhouse women at the helm of both Rapid Eye and Photobook Cafe, making it all actually happen - Lee's wife Sebi & London nightlife legend Farika Holden. A massive shout-out to you both!Consider this episode your warm and cosy entrance into Lee's roots, mindset and above all, passion for photography. Today Justin shares his journey of putting together a self-published photo book, exploring the challenges of curating and arranging photos, and taking a photo roadtrip. He also dives into the significance of intention and connection with your subject matter. The Big Ideas:Embrace Emotional Connection: Engage deeply with your subject to capture photos that evoke emotions and tell a story.Value Quality over Quantity: Spend time refining your shots instead of focusing on producing a large number of images.Adaptability is Key: Be flexible and adjust your techniques based on the environment and light conditions you encounter.Curate Thoughtfully: Select and arrange your photos carefully to create a cohesive and compelling visual narrative.Photography Action Plan:Experiment with Light: Shoot during different times of the day to see how light affects your images. Use natural light and reflectors to fill in shadows for better composition.Curate Your Portfolio: Start by organizing your best photos into a digital portfolio. Arrange them thoughtfully to tell a coherent story or showcase varied styles.Slow Down Your Process: Spend more time on each shot, focusing on framing and composition. Analyze your photos on-site to identify and correct any issues immediately.Capture Emotion: Select subjects that evoke a strong emotional response in you. Aim to tell a story through your images rather than just capturing a scene.Engage with the Community: Join photography groups like the Beginner Photography Podcast Community to exchange tips and get feedback. We were recently asked about where we find inspiration while making photos, which led Kirk and Jeff to muse on the idea of being primed to find photo subjects. It's not enough to arrive at a destination with a blank slate—you'll create better photos and enjoy the experience more if you prime yourself to see what's in front of you. That can come from photo books, online photos of the same area, and more. The period of time from the beginning of the pandemic until now seems to have been ten years and at the same time only a few months. It's like we're experiencing some sort of collective time warp.  When I stop and think about ALL of the things that have taken place in that period of time, I start to feel overwhelmed.  In this episode of The Nerdy Photographer Podcast, photographer Kamal X and I tackle some of that time periods and topics entwined with the time. Kamal's new photo book, Black Astronaut, "gives viewers a striking depiction of a nationwide revolution ignited by the pandemic and the passing of George Floyd. By taking an innovative approach my book creates an unparalleled opportunity to explore pivotal sectors of our country's unrest." In our discussion, we also touch on subjects ranging from overcoming uncertainty and hostile situations to what it truly means to be yourself. Now that it seems so distant in many ways, we forget how lost and in uncharted territory we really were. Photography found me at a time in my life where I felt confused and voiceless. I wasn't sure of where I was internally and what direction I wanted my life to go. I welcomed my challenges and I found myself drawn to creating images that evoke emotions rooted in the many universal elements of the human experience.  My goal is to tell stories from all walks of life and give a raw voice to the world we live in, through compassion and honesty."
