How defence SMEs can pioneer social impact in procurement

A golden opportunity in the era of Labour's Procurement Act The dust has barely settled on Labour's Procurement Act, which kicked in back in February 2025, and defence SMEs find themselves at a crossroads. On one hand, they're facing some real headaches; on the other, there's a chance to make their mark as genuine trailblazers in social impact. With government scrutiny on spending ramping up, smaller players can actually stand out from the crowd by showing they're serious about making meaningful change happen. The changing landscape of Social Value The Social Value Act was first introduced in 2012 when 'social value' was little more than a footnote in procurement discussions. It has been on quite the ride since then. Fast forward to 2020, when we saw the introduction of a proper framework with five clear themes: COVID-19 Recovery, Tackling Economic Inequality, Fighting Climate Change, Equal Opportunity, and Wellbeing. Labour hasn't wasted any time putting its stamp on things. Rayner's 'National Procurement Plan' has teeth, making Social Value non-negotiable in contracts and holding suppliers' feet to the fire. Since February, the new Act forces both buyers and suppliers to publish their Social Value KPIs in black and white. No more hiding in the shadows. The SME challenge: David vs Goliath It's a totally different ball game for SMEs compared to the big boys. When that 10% Social Value threshold landed with PPN 06/20, industry giants barely blinked - Jacobs simply bought half a consultancy and created Simetrica-Jacobs overnight. Job done. SMEs just don't have that luxury - their piggy banks aren't big enough for that kind of splash. To make matters worse, the advice they're getting often comes from forums dominated by the very primes they're competing against. Talk about the fox guarding the henhouse! The measurement problem is another thorn in their side: current systems that love to attach pound signs to everything naturally favour those with deeper pockets. When an SME takes on one apprentice, it's a big deal for them but it gets lost in the noise when compared to a multinational hiring a small army of graduates. The SME advantage: agility and authenticity But it's not all doom and gloom. Defence SMEs have some aces up their sleeves - their nimble structure means they can weave Social Value into their DNA, rather than bolting it on as an afterthought. As smaller and more flexible businesses, SMEs have the advantage of fully integrating Social Value into their core values, culture and everyday operations. Larger businesses often struggle to retrofit Social Value, but we, at RUK have been able to build it into the fabric of everything we do. This isn't just corporate speak - it translates into real-world impact. SMEs' local roots mean they actually understand what communities need. With Labour banging the drum for regional development, that local knowledge is pure gold. They can pivot quickly, create initiatives that actually matter, and build partnerships that deliver more than just PR points. Building Defence SME success in Social Value At RUK, collaboration underpins everything we do and we believe that SMEs can punch above their weight by focusing on these partnerships that matter, creating their own bespoke tracking tools. Developing a solid Social Value strategy takes graft, but we've found that having the right relationships in place makes all the difference when bidding for contracts. For RUK, Social Value isn't a box-ticking exercise; it's central to our entire approach to winning business. SMEs can flip the script on their limitations. By zeroing in on quality rather than quantity, and developing focused initiatives that play to their strengths, they can create impact that resonates far more deeply than the scattergun approach often adopted by larger players. A call to action for government and industry For this potential to be realised, we need some fundamental changes. Government bodies must craft guidelines that...

As the urgency to address the climate emergency heightens, businesses are coming under increasing pressure to monitor, report and reduce their energy use and carbon emissions to meet net zero targets. As a result, there is an increase in regulations to ensure that companies are taking the climate emergency seriously and not pay lip service to climate action. During September, we'll be taking a look at a few of the latest regulations that may affect your organisation, including: ·      SECR – Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting ·      ISSB S2 - International Sustainability Standards Board Climate related disclosures ·      CSRD - Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive ·      CSDDD - Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive In this episode, Mel Blackmore breaks down what Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR) is, its reporting requirements, it's qualifiers and how it can work in tandem with other carbon management initiatives. You'll learn ·      How do these regulations relate to ESG reporting? ·      What is Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting? ·      What are the SECR Emissions Reporting Requirements? ·      Who qualifies for SECR? ·      How can SECR work with other carbon management initiatives?   Resources ·      Carbonology ·      SECR     In this episode, we talk about: [00:30] Join the isologyhub – To get access to a suite of ISO related tools, training and templates. Simply head on over to isologyhub.com to either sign-up or book a demo. [02:10] Episode summary: Over the course of September, Mel will be exploring the latest climate change regulations that may affect your organisation. In this episode she dives into Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR). [03:20] How do these regulations relate to ESG reporting? – ESG requirements include a commitment to sustainability, and reducing your overall impact. All of these regulations contribute towards an organisations ESG reporting requirements, as they require tangible proof to back up your ESG claims. They will require you to provide comprehensive emissions reporting, the level of detail of which will depend on the specific applicable regulation. [04:05] Future content to look forward to: During September Mel will look at involuntary emissions reporting schemes, but in October she will be looking into the voluntary schemes that many are already adopting as part of their Stakeholder requirements. This will include: ·      CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) ·      EcoVardis [05:50] What are the SECR Emissions Reporting Requirements?: SECR has been around since April 2019, and was originally introduced to replace the Carbon Reduction Commitment Scheme. This is a mandatory scheme, so it is a legal requirement for those that meet it's criteria. For those that are familiar with ESOS (The Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme), it functions in a very similar way. This scheme isn't solely focused on reporting energy usage and carbon emissions, it's also looking for organisations to report on efficiency measures that are undertaken on an annual basis. Which is reflected in the financial reporting that you will also have to submit. It's important to note that SECR has specific requirements for the disclosure of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and energy consumption. Emission reporting requirements vary slightly between quoted companies and large unquoted companies and LLPs. For quoted Companies: ·      Global Scope 1 and 2 GHG emissions must be reported. Scope 3 emissions reporting is strongly recommended but voluntary. For large unquoted companies and LLPs: ·      UK based Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions and associated energy consumption. Scope 3 emissions from the combustion of fuel in vehicles or equipment not owned by the company. [10:10] Join the isologyhub and get access to limitless ISO resources – From as little as £99 a month, you can have unlimited access to hundreds of online training courses and achieve certification for completion of courses along the way, which will take you from learner to practitioner to leader in no time. Simply head on over to the isologyhub to sign-up or book a demo. [12:05] Who qualifies for SECR?:  All UK Quoted Companies: Any company that has shares listed on the UK Stock Exchange is required to comply with SECR. Large Unquoted Companies and Large LLPs: These are companies and Limited Liability Partnerships (LLPs) that are not listed on the UK Stock Exchange but meet two or more of the following criteria: ·      Turnover: More than £36 million per annum. ·      Balance Sheet Total: More than £18 million. ·      Number of Employees: 250 or more employees. These criteria ensure that SECR framework targets large organisations that have a significant impact on the UK's energy consumption and carbon emissions. By complying with SECR, these organisations can contribute significantly to the UK's sustainability goals. [14:10] When is the SECR disclosure made? SECR reporting must occur alongside financial reporting, being included within annual reports and Directors' Reports, which are then filed with Companies House. [14:30] The importance of Accurate SECR Reporting and Carbon Reduction -  The reporting process can unlock valuable insights and opportunities for operational improvements, leading to enhanced energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions over time. Demonstrating your organisation's commitment to energy efficiency and carbon reduction can enhance brand perception and foster positive relationships with stakeholders, including investors, clients, and regulators. [16:05] Integrating SECR Reporting with Other Carbon Management Initiatives -  You are missing a trick if you're keeping your SECR reporting separate from the rest of your business activities. It should be included as a part of your sustainability umbrella, and can be invaluable if you're going for other reporting requirements such as EcoVardis and CSRD. There's no need to reinvent the wheel if you already have something like an Environmental Management System in place, simply weave the additional requirements in with your usual annual maintenance. Established systems will already be adhered to across the business, meaning any new requirements will soon become business as usual. You could incorporate this as part of your Net Zero strategy, or Carbon Reduction Plan if PPN 06/21 is one of your reporting requirements. You could also incorporate this into your supply chain emissions reporting. If you would like some help with SECR, please get in touch with Carbonology. There is a growing pressure on businesses to address their environmental impact, both from the Government as well as a more sustainably minded consumer base. As a result, the need to carry out Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions reporting is being introduced as a mandatory requirement for tenders, and Government led initiatives such as Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting (SECR).   Today Mel Blackmore will discuss Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions reporting, and how verifying GHG Statements in alignment with ISO 14064-1 can benefit your business. You'll learn ·      Why is there a growing need to report on GHG emissions? ·      What is the difference between certification and verification? ·      What is ISO 14064-1? ·      What are the benefits of ISO 14064-1?   Resources ·      Carbonologyhub     In this episode, we talk about: [00:30] Join the isologyhub – To get access to a suite of ISO related tools, training and templates. Simply head on over to isologyhub.com to either sign-up or book a demo. [02:05] Episode summary: Mel will be discussing GHG emissions reporting, and why verifying your businesses GHG Statements in alignment with ISO 14064-1 is a smart move.      [02:30] What's the difference between Certification and Verification? – We covered this in detail on a previous episode, go back and listen to episode 162 [02:40] Why is there a growing need to address GHG emissions? – Climate change is a top concern for many. Consumers, investors and governments across the globe are all demanding greater transparency and accountability from businesses regarding their environmental impact. In particular, the carbon footprint a business claims to have. [03:25] What is ISO 14064-1? – ISO 14064-1 is in internationally recognised Standard for quantification of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and removals at the organisational level. In simple terms, this is the go-to Standard for businesses looking to calculate, verify and publish its carbon emissions. [03:40] Benefit #1: Making compliance and reporting easier – Now, it's important to note that the first time you go through this process will be like pulling teeth. You will need to do a fair bit of work initially, but once that's set-up, it will make the necessary annual reporting a much easier process. ISO 14064-1 verification ensures you are complying with applicable regulations such as SECR and the Governments requirement for a PPN 06/21 (within the UK). If you are based in the UK, there is now Public Sector tendering requirement to identify what your carbon footprint is and make recommendations for reductions in the form of a Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP). It can also help to streamline initiatives like the CDP (Carbon Disclosure Project) or EcoVardis. [05:40] Benefit #2: Taking a deeper look at your emissions footprint – Verification is not simply just ticking a box, it's about providing a clear picture of your organisations' total GHG emissions. Not just your CO2 emissions, ISO 14064-1 ensure you account for different types of emissions sources. This granular understanding will be crucial in identifying areas for improvement and developing an effective reduction strategy. [06:25] Benefit #3: Providing Trust and Transparency – Having your report verified by am independent third-party adds a layer of credibility to your GHG reporting. Anyone can just say their carbon emissions are X, but it's another to have that backed up by a third-party. They can ensure your claims are true, correct and that there is a credible methodology behind it. Stakeholders such as investors, consumers and regulators will then have the confidence that your emissions data is accurate and transparent. Carbonology can assist you with the training resources needed to do this – so check out their website to learn more. [07:30] Benefit #4: Pave a way for Carbon Reduction Strategies – We mentioned earlier about the requirement for a PPN 06/21, this requires a Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP). Whether you create one based on a mandatory requirement or not, having a CRP is a no brainer for any business. It helps you to understand your emissions, which is the first step towards reducing them. ISO 14064-1 verification lays the ground work for developing and implementing an effective CRP. This can translate into significant cost savings and a competitive edge in the long run. [08:30] Benefit #5: Embrace Mitigation – The verification goes beyond just cutting emissions. It supports mitigation actions like carbon removal projects, allowing you to demonstrate a holistic approach to tackling climate change year on year. [08:50] Benefit #6: It's a global Standard – ISO 14064-1 was created by over 140 representatives from over 50 countries globally to define exactly what greenhouse gas emission verification should look like. While there are lots of other ways to achieve Net Zero, it makes more sense to choose an established route that will be recognised as best practice globally. [10:25] Benefit #7: Tracking your progress – Verifying your GHG statements allows you to track progress over time. This data is invaluable for communicating your achievements both internally and externally to key stakeholders about your drive towards net zero goals. It also helps to showcase your commitment to sustainability. [11:00] Benefit #8: Participation in sustainability initiatives – Verification opens doors to participating in voluntary GHG registries and sustainability reporting initiatives. This in turn will help to broaden your visibility as an organisation, amongst the environmentally conscious stakeholders that will be looking for credible sustainable businesses to work with or buy from. [11:45] ISO 14064 is a no-brainer – It offers a significant strategic advantage and can help to demonstrate transparency with GHG reporting – something very sought after in the midst of a lot of green washing claims. If you'd like assistance with ISO 14064-1, visit Carbonology's website and get in contact, they'd be happy to help. We're also talking about Identification Technolgies driven by A.I., by Alitheon, with a huge impact to the world of counterfeit medications.  Independent Pharmacy Owners in Georgia take another blow to the face as their businesses and PublicHealth Services to their communities are threatened by the latest decisions on Senate Bill 198. Owners of independent pharmacies in Georgia are criticizing Gov. Office of Governor Brian P. Kemp 's decision this week to veto legislation aimed at rectifying a situation that has left them at a competitive disadvantage with pharmacy chains. Senate Bill 198, which the state House and Senate passed with only one “no” vote, would have required the State Health Benefit Plan (SHBP) covering teachers and state employees to reimburse independent pharmacies filling prescriptions at rates no less than the average reimbursement provided to chain pharmacies. Full article here: https://lnkd.in/epQsshEB This is State Representative Buddy Carter's home state and as a pharmacy owner, I am sure he's in disagreement with this decision which will exacerbate the problems our Georgia State Independent pharmacies are facing, causing many to face financial problems and some pharmacies will be forced to close. To add to this story, PPN was informed that the President of the Georgia Pharmacy Association Mr. Joe Ed Holt was fired from PruittHealth for publicly disagreeing with the decisions of Georgia State Governor Kemp vetoing SB198 which makes reimbursement for Independent Community Pharmacies unfair compared to mail order and chains??  "Fraudulent and unidentified goods infiltrate nearly every industry, damaging businesses, economies and livelihoods, as well as risking public health and safety," said Roei Ganzarski, CEO of Alitheon. "TIME's recognition of FeaturePrint as a leading invention puts this growing problem in the spotlight, where it should be." Anthony V. Minniti, RPh FACA joins the PPN on the PBM Reform Podcast to talk about why the PBMs, in their current state need to be removed from pharmacy care. As drug prices soar, the White House is taking action by hosting a pivotal listening session on Monday, aiming to dissect and potentially reform the practices of pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs). This roundtable will unite federal representatives and industry insiders, including Mark Cuban of Cost Plus Drug Company, to scrutinize PBMs' roles in shaping drug coverage and pricing. The focus is on the opaque dealings of PBMs, which many argue contribute to inflated costs for both consumers and the broader healthcare system. Shocking revelations unveil steep markups by the leading #PBM affecting West Virginia's public employees. The mail-order pharmacy owned by the PBM has been reimbursed as much as 100 times more than other pharmacies for specialty medications. This concerning pattern underscores the urgent need for increased transparency and accountability measures for #PBMs.  Pharmacy benefit manager (PBM) reform has emerged as a bipartisan priority in a divided Congress, as both Republicans and Democrats have advanced a myriad of bills that would begin to address PBMs, their lack of transparency, and misalignment of the market. At the same time, lobbyists that represent large PBMs continue to argue that drug companies (not integrated PBMs) are to blame for high employer or patient costs.

What is Pug Partners of Nebraska? Pug Partners of Nebraska is a 501c3, non-profit organization comprised of dedicated volunteers who are committed to rescuing and re-homing pugs in need. We believe that all pugs deserve a chance to be loved and to love a human companion. The majority of our rescue pugs come from what is called a puppy mill (a mass breeding facility), and we are very dedicated to these special dogs and providing them with the life they deserve. Our main purpose is to provide all of our rescue pugs with a loving foster home, quality dog food, medical care, and any other need that they may have while in our care. Our ultimate goal is to place each pug into a forever family that will continue to show the pug love, attention, and provide the care that they each deserve. We strive to educate our adopters and the public about our wonderful pug breed. Although pugs are quite different from most breeds, we want to show people how amazing these small dogs can be, and how they are great companions. Vision Statement Pug Partners of Nebraska provides a service to the community for pugs in need, by rescuing purebred pugs that are in shelters, puppy mills, whose owners can no longer care for them, and for those who have become lost/abandoned and to place them in a loving and safe permanent home where they will be loved and cared for as companion pets. Goals of Pug Partners of Nebraska To accomplish our mission, Pug Partners of Nebraska strives to: Rescue adoptable pugs from a variety of situations and place them into loving foster homes until their permanent home can be found Treat all pugs like our own, by giving them behavioral and medical attention that they need Act as advocates by protecting and advancing the pug breed by encouraging responsible pug ownership and by rescuing pugs from unsafe or abusive situations Carefully screen all volunteers to ensure that the most knowledgeable pug experts in the community are on board with pug Partners' mission Help reduce the pet over-population crisis by ensuring that all pugs adopted through our rescue are spayed or neutered Have useful information available to those interested in adding a pug to their family Provide the community with superior knowledge of the pug breed cooperate and network with other animal rescue organizations in the community and world-wide Incorporate programs to help the rescue succeed and involved more volunteers Pug Partners History One random July evening in 2008, Jessica Kamish was surfing the web looking for a sister for her current 3 year old pug Rocky. She came across the website for Midwest Pug Rescue where a banner read, “Foster homes needed in Omaha, NE.” As Jessica was the president of the Omaha Pug Club, with membership of more than 150 pug lovers, she was sure that she could find a couple of fellow pug lovers who would open their  homes and hearts to a pug in need and foster for the rescue. An email was sent out to the address listed on the website, and an email was quickly received back that there was a 6 year old female who was found in O'Neil, Nebraska who needed a foster home. At this point Jessica sent an email to the pug club asking for foster homes. One couple replied immediately, Megan and Josiah (Si) Hollibaugh. They had just adopted two pugs from another rescue and wanted to help out a pug in need. With much contemplation, Jessica and her fiancé Matt decided to go ahead and take on this 6 year old puppy mill pug and give fostering a try. They named their foster pug Lily.  Lily changed Matt and Jessica's life. As a puppy mill survivor she had never experienced life outside of a kennel. There were so many firsts, and they found glory in the small things.  The experience touched them both and they wanted to become more involved. Shortly after deciding this, Lily became part of their family. Jessica soon began getting emails about all the pugs needing rescued in Nebraska and Iowa. At this time, the only pug rescue in the area was Midwest Pug Rescue in Kansas City, MO, and it was obvious that the rescue need was great in the Nebraska and Iowa area as well.  Jessica continued to seek out additional foster homes to help with the influx of pugs that needed rescued in the area.  Megan and Si were the first foster home to take in a foster pug after Jessica. Their first foster was Yoda, a three year old mostly blind male who was surrendered to the Council Bluffs Animal Shelter. They too were touched by their fostering experience and wanted to find a way to help the pugs in need even more. After finding it hard to stay in contact with the pug rescue in Kansas City, Jessica, Matt, Megan and Si decided that it would be best to start up their own rescue and run it the way that would work best for them. Pug Partners of Nebraska was created in December 2008, and the EIN number request was filed with the IRS. In January 2009, a generous Omaha lawyer agreed to help the group file their 501(c)(3) paperwork. On January 30, 2009 the state certified Pug Partners of Nebraska's Articles of Incorporation. Since then, Pug Partners of Nebraska has rescued over 900 pugs.  We have over 20 foster homes, many volunteers, and have countless happy-ever-after stories about the pugs PPN has rescued. As the rescue has increased in size, Pug Partners added new positions to better help them rescue more pugs in need. In July 2009, positions were added to include a foster qualifier, foster coordinator, adoption qualifier, and adoption coordinator. In January 2010, these roles were further condensed to include a foster director and an adoption director.  In March 2010, the positions began evolving once again and will continue to evolve as the rescue continues to grow. Join us for a dinner benefitting Pug Partners of Nebraska! This special event directly supports our rescue efforts. There will be a live auctioneer, a silent auction, raffles, a photo booth, and a presentation of Pug Partners' mission and achievements for the year. Pia has published different books in the field of biology and in the field of photography. With her latest photo project “Water People Stories”, she uses the access and skills that she has in both professions, to make her scientific work more accessible to the broad public.   This show is sponsored by MPB.com: www.MPB.com   Inspirational Photographer of the Month: Pia picked Russian-born American photographer Anastasia Samoylova. Anastasia's work revolves around environmentalism, consumerism, and the picturesque. She has exhibited her work in many museums worldwide. She has also published several photo books with some of the finest publishers in the industry. You can find out more about Anastasia Samoylova's work by visiting her website: https://www.anasamoylova.com/ Water People Stories - The creation process for meaningful photo projects: In the main segment of this show, Pia shared how she started her latest photo project “Water People Stories” - the project combines her work and skills as a scientist in wetland ecology and as a photographer for street- and documentary photography. Pia realized that scientists are often good at communicating their results amongst themselves. But they are usually not that good at communicating it outside the scientific world. Pia wants to change that with her new photo project, where she combines her scientific experience and access with her photography. In this project, she wants to tell individual stories about people all around the world, and how water impacts their daily lives. For those people who live in urban spaces, access to water is taken for granted. But that is not the case for people all around the world, and climate change and global warming may have a negative impact on the water supply for many more people in the future.  Inspirational Photo Book Pick of the Month: Pia's pick: “Floridas by Anastasia Samoylova". From the publisher's description: “Evans witnessed modern Florida emerging in the 1930s, with its blend of cultures, waves of tourism, stark beauty, and blatant vulgarity. He photographed there until the 1970s, making Polaroids that still feel contemporary. Samoylova inherits what Evans saw coming. With intelligence and humor, she picks her way through the seductions and disappointments of a place that symbolizes the contradictions of the United States today. In Floridas, photographs by Samoylova and Evans are presented in parallel, weaving past and present, switching between black-and-white and color imagery…” The book is published by Steidel and has 192 pages Amazon: https://amzn.to/471qfwR Photo Festivals that Marco and Pia mentioned:   German Street Photography Festival is a part of PHOTOPIA 21. - 24. This volume, the first retrospective of his work, is a superb overview of his personal quest for freedom of expression and the liberation of the senses.”  The book is published by Thames & Hudson and has 144 pages Amazon: https://amzn.to/3NuuU1b   Marco also mentioned the three books, that Martin has recently published and talked about on the show:   Streetfotografie made in Germany 357 pages in German, published by Rheinwerk Verlag Amazon: https://amzn.to/46vIk5K   Next Level Streetfotografie: 256 pages in German, published by dpunkt Verlag Amazon: https://amzn.to/3NvwW1g   Berlin Unseen: 208 pages in English and German, published by teNeues Verlag Amazon: https://amzn.to/3PEBrsT   Links to Martin U Waltz: Web: https://www.StreetBerlin.net    Links to Marco Larousse: Web: www.MarcoLarousse.com  Twitter: @HamburgCam Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/marco.larousse/  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MarcoLarousse1  Workshops: https://www.marcolarousse.com/street-photography-workshops/  Eigen Energie Wende: https://www.eigenenergiewende.de   Links to PPN: Web: www.PhotoPodcasts.com or PPN.fm Twitter: @Photopodcasts Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/photopodcasts/ YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/c/PPNPhotoPodcastNetwork  Apple Podcasts: http://bit.ly/ppn-apple-podcasts  Google Podcasts: http://bit.ly/PPN-GooglePodcast Spotify: http://bit.ly/PPN-fm Please support our show by using our B&H affiliate link (click here) or Amazon Germany link (click here) which will not cost you a penny more than when you are buying at B&H or Amazon without our link.   Check out the Skylum LUMINAR software: Link: LUMINAR NEO (use the discount code “PHOTOPODCASTS” at checkout for extra savings)   And please share this podcast with your friends and subscribe via Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, or search for “PPN” in your favorite podcast app. We would also love to get your feedback. On this PPN Camera and Inspiration episode, Marco invited the inspiring photographer, author, and YouTuber Sean Tucker who has been on Marco's interview wishlist the longest and who has been requested to be a guest the most by PPN listeners. Sean was invited to this show because Marco had the feeling, that we all could use an inspirational jump-start right now, to get our creativity going and to either level up on current projects or to get inspired to start new photo projects.   This show is sponsored by MPB.com: www.MPB.com Inspirational Photographer of the Month: Sean picked Canadian-born photographer Joey Lawrence (Joey L.). Sean is impressed by how tasteful Joey creates his portraits and how meaningful his work is. Joey has some personal projects like the tribes of the Omo Valley in Ethiopia, the guerrilla fighters of Kurdistan, and Holy Men in India, where he mixes natural light and strobes to create very striking images. You can find out more about Joey L.'s work by visiting his website: http://joeyl.com Here are some behind-the-scenes videos of the three photo projects:: http://joeyl.com/onset/videos Motivation to pick up your camera and start new photo projects: In the main segment of this show, Sean shared different approaches to get in the right mindset to think about new projects or to level up on existing projects. Making friends with change and “embracing the suck” is part of the process, that helps us to explore and expand our mental, creative, and technical mindset for future photo projects. Inspirational Photo Book Pick of the Month: Sean's pick: “BYWAYS” Photographs by Roger A. Deakins. Sean is inspired by Rager A. Deakins as he is one of his favorite cinematographers who has done some of the most beautiful films of the last 20 years. Deakins' photos in this book are from rural North Devon and the neighboring seaside dating back as far as 1971. Sean likes the way Deakins frames his images with the same eye that he has when he composes his movies - but without the famous actors and lighting setup.  So it is like the purest version of his vision to Sean. The book is published by Thames & Hudson and has 160 pages Amazon US: amzn.to/43eROAq Amazon Germany: https://amzn.to/43DNURv Marco's pick: “The Meaning in the Making (A Philosophy - for the Creative Life)” by Sean Tucker.   Author's description: This book contains personal stories interwoven with the psychological, philosophical, and spiritual practices which help me stay a mentally healthy, inspired, and motivated "maker of things." I may be known first and foremost as a photographer, but this book has been written for anyone who makes anything; from filmmakers to musicians, and from painters to writers. So, no matter what your chosen creative outlet is, this book is for you. After a longer than anticipated break, Marco invited back his friend and PPN co-founder Scott Bourn to the 6. PPN birthday anniversary show. They did some catching up on what they had been up to since the last episode aired and then covered Scott's new photo genre “toy photography” which later transitioned into covering the good, the bad and the implications that Ai photography may have on the industry and society.   This show is sponsored by MPB.com: www.MPB.com Inspirational Photographer of the Month:   Scott picked Japanese photographer Hiroshi Sugimoto (born 1948 in Tokyo). Scott is particularly impressed that Hiroshi Sugimoto has reinvented himself and his photography many times and always became a true master at the genres that he worked at. Sugimoto has won many international photo awards and exhibited his work in museums and galleries around the world. You can find out more about Hiroshi Sugimoto by visiting his website: https://www.sugimotohiroshi.com   Here is a video interview where Hiroshi Sugimoto talks about his diorama work: https://youtu.be/q9GiyPbLYPg Toy Photography and some pros and Cons of the Development of AI in Photography.   In the main segment, Scott explained how he got into toy photography and shared some insights on his pre- and post-production approach for his impressive photos. In his process, Scott also saw lots of advantages to partially using AI in his post-processing workflow and has since embraced it and pushed his work to new frontiers. This led to an interesting discussion between Marco and Scott on the recent developments of AI in photography and how this may influence the photo industry and society in the future. Inspirational Photo Book Pick of the Month: “Conceptual Forms and Mathematical Models” by Hiroshi Sugimoto.   Scott was so inspired by the work of Hirosho Sugimoto, that he also picked his book: “Conceptual Forms and Mathematical Models”. The photos in this book show the degree of perfection that Hiroshi Sugimoto strives for in his images. Capturing still life forms in technical perfection while creating interesting museum art is what can be learned from the images in this book.
