Christmas Eve Luke 2:1-20 at Common Table: Repeat the Sounding Joy w/ Drew Willson
Christmas Eve / Luke 1:26-56 & 2:19 / Jonathan Haefs
Luke 2:1–20 The Birth of Jesus Christ [1] In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. [2] This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. [3] And all went to be registered, each to his own town. [4] And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, [5] to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child. [6] And while they were there, the time came for her to give birth. [7] And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. The Shepherds and the Angels [8] And in the same region there were shepherds out in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. [9] And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with great fear. [10] And the angel said to them, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. [11] For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. [12] And this will be a sign for you: you will find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger.” [13] And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, [14] “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” [15] When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go over to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us.” [16] And they went with haste and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in a manger. [17] And when they saw it, they made known the saying that had been told them concerning this child. [18] And all who heard it wondered at what the shepherds told them. [19] But Mary treasured up all these things, pondering them in her heart. [20] And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them. (ESV)

Christmas Eve: Luke's Gospel tells us that when Mary gives birth to Jesus, she lays him in a manger, for there was no place for them in the guest room. Scholars argue about where, exactly, the birth occurs—and why. Was it in a stable or the living room of a simple peasant home? Was Bethlehem teeming with visitors who were also there to be counted in the census? Was Joseph's family inhospitable because they disapproved of his marital situation? Regardless of where the birth occurs, we know that Christ is born in a crowded, unlikely place. And yet, God makes a place here anyway. God draws the circle wider as shepherds and unexpected guests arrive. This Christmas, let us also make room—for strangers and neighbors alike. For this is good news of great joy for all people. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/rev-craig-gommer/message

We remember the good news of Jesus's first coming and look forward to His coming again. Preacher: Jeremy Hager
On Christmas Eve, gifts will be on all our minds. What am I getting? Will my family like what I got them? Gifts are things we love to give and receive. And when we give them, they are things we're excited for others to receive. On Christmas Eve we are reminded of the truth that God is a gift giver and so presents us all with a choice: will we accept God's gift or not? Through the example of Mary, we'll see that there's no better response than to receive it with joy.

“Joy to the world” is a catchy lyric but can seem totally impossible when life feels messy. When we think “Christmas”, we think “joyful celebration”, but what happens when the holiday season doesn't match what's happening around us? Well, in this series we're going to find a way to say, “joy to the world anyway”. We'll discover that Christmas is a season of joy, even when life feels messy.Support the show
We don't talk about it often, but the Christmas story is filled with bad news. Bad news is the backdrop for the birth of Jesus. An unexpected and unusual pregnancy, an arduous journey, and no room at the inn. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong in this story. But then God shows up. God shows up in the middle of the mess to bring a promise of good news.

If there's anyone who could be proud on the first Christmas it's Mary, she gave birth to the King of the world! and yet she models to us what Christmas is all about - humility.

It's Christmas Eve and we're thrusted into the ever-familiar Christmas story in the Gospel of Luke. All the world should be registered. Mary's firstborn son wrapped in bands of cloth, laid in a manger. No room in the inn. Shepherds living in the fields when an angel appeared. Dr. Chris Croghan explains to Adam, Kiri, and Mason why it's so important to hear this text every year, why God uses everyday, non-religious people to accomplish His will, and the emphasis on the words TO YOU when the angel says, "to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is the Messiah, the Lord."Adam, Kiri, and Mason ask:Why does God give this message to the shepherds? Why was this such a trial for Mary? What should we pay attention to in what the angel said?Support the showInterested in sponsoring an episode of Scripture First?Email Sarah at sarah@lhos.org or visit our donation page: lutherhouseofstudy.org/donate
