From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Generations of sewingDaniela Bianchini is a Minneapolis mosaic artist who is originally from Argentina. She's drawn toward an exhibit at CLUES' Latino Art Gallery in St. Paul that celebrates the art of sewing as it is passed through generations of women. The exhibit, by Columbian-Minnesotan artist Adriana Gordillo and Nena's Atelier, is titled “Connective Thread.” It opens Friday, March 14 and runs through May 14. There is a Cafecito de Hermanas (Coffee with Sisters) on Saturday, March 15 from 9 a.m. to noon that offers a time for workshops, resources, music and community connection. Register here. Daniela says: I feel very related to it. We all in Latin America grew up seeing our grandmas and our mothers sewing. I've seen a couple of images that the artists have been posting in their social media: collages of different compositions of fabric and flowers and needles, and things that you see that represent the art of sewing. The community will be able to write something: their emotions, or their feelings about the exhibition, and some sort of petals that will then be sewed together and put in a dress.— Daniela BianchiniCelebrating Latinos on BroadwayAnne Sawyer, executive director of Art Start in St. Paul, is looking forward to seeing Teatro Del Pueblo's “Voces Latinas: A Broadway Musical Revue.” Directed by Mark Valdez of Mixed Blood Theatre with musical direction by Brenda Varga, “Voces Latinas” celebrates Latino artists' contributions to Broadway through the years. Shows are at Park Square Theatre in St. Paul, beginning Friday, March 14 and continuing Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 and Sunday, March 16 at 2 p.m. Anne says: If you love musicals, this production promises to be so much fun. Teatro del Pueblo's performers will sing a curated, eclectic collection of songs that is a take on the Latino experience on Broadway. There are some older, really iconic numbers made famous by the likes of Chita Rivera, such as “A Boy Like That” from “West Side Story” and “Bye, Bye Birdie's” “An English Teacher.” But there's also pieces like Selena's "Amor Prohibido” and the “Hamilton” song “Dear Theodosia,” which was sung on Broadway by Lin-Manuel Miranda and Leslie Odom Jr. What is so engaging about this production is the range of musical styles and how they encompass so many themes, societal differences and passionate love, pride in one's mother country, family and the struggle to survive. It's a show that will take you on a real roller coaster of emotion.— Anne SawyerLilith Fair lives on Laura Hotvet loves the cover band Pandora's Other Box, and she's excited for their upcoming concert, which feels tailor-made for Women's Month. “The Legacy of Lilith Fair” celebrates the female musicians who took part in Lilith Fair in the late 1990s, and the artists who have followed in their footsteps. The concert takes place at the Women's Club of Minneapolis on Saturday, March 15 at 7:30 p.m. Laura says: Pandora's Other Box is one of the most energetic and fun-to-listen-to, fun-to-dance-to, talented pop rock cover bands in the Twin Cities. The show features songs from [Lilith Fair concert tour] founder Sarah McLachlan, along with Paula Cole, Sheryl Crow, The Chicks, Bonnie Raitt, Tracy Chapman, Pat Benatar, Indigo Girls and more. The second act will journey through the 25 years that followed, and this will be showcasing more current artists who benefited from the bravery of the original female pioneers in the Lilith era, such as Brandi Carlile, Taylor Swift, Beyonce, Carrie Underwood, Paramore and more.— Laura Hotvet

Who gets to tell the story? It's the season finale, and it feels like a perfect time to travel back to 2015, when a blockbuster hip-hop musical about America's founders took the world by storm. That's right... Today, Peter and Nathan return to the room where it happened and consider the theology of Lin-Manuel Miranda's Hamilton. _________________________________________ You'll hear: My Shot / Wait For It / The Ten Dual Commandments: Hamilton & Burr—like Valjean & Javert, like Jesus & Judas—represent oppositional forces, responding to similar circumstances with radically different approaches to life. They also each get a great “I Want” song. Burn / Quiet Uptown / Say No To This: Eliza Schuyler Hamilton, Maria Reynolds, Angelica Schuyler Church and the various roles that women play in this story. What does forgiveness look like – and what does Eliza see at the end of the musical? One Last Time / Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Tells Your Story: Few other musicals are so associated with presidential administrations as Hamilton is with Barack Obama. We think about the connections between the Hamilton project and the Obama project, wonder about the soft nationalism at the heart of this story, and think critically about the legacy of George Washington. Who gets to tell the story? You'll hear Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr, Phillipa Soo, Renee Elise Goldsberry, Christopher Jackson and the cast of the 2015 Original Broadway Cast Album. It won a Grammy. _________________________________________ Check out some of our all-time favorites! Phantom of the Opera Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Jesus Christ Superstar! Grammy and Tony Award winner Leslie Odom Jr. is ushering in the holiday season on The Christmas Tour, which he will be performing at the Hershey Theatre Dec 17. He will be performing holiday classics, and selections from his Christmas album Simply Christmas and The Christmas Album. For Odom Jr. Christmas is one of his favorite holidays and he's hoping to share that experience with the audience during his tour. “Christmas means family. Christmas means rest. You know, as Americans, we work. We work hard. And there's something about Christmas, too, Like a day or two after New Year. That's like the only time as Americans that we really allow ourselves to rest and push the pause button. People are not expecting you to answer your email right away, your text messages right away. So, it means pushing the pause button, you know, and focusing on family.” Leslie is a Pennsylvania native and is looking forward to performing in Hershey. “It's been a long time. You know, Pennsylvania holds such dear memories for me. I grew up in Philadelphia, of course, I went to college in Pittsburgh. My summer job was to intern on the House floor. You know, I was a page on the House floor in Harrisburg, so you know it. I am looking forward, as usual, to touching down in Pennsylvania and to having those that those rush of memories. I've got dear friends coming to the show in Hershey, and I want those memories around me at the holiday time. You know, it's really special.” CLICK HERE to see more about Leslie Odom Jr.'s upcoming tour.Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Welcome back to Not A Bomb! This is the podcast where we dive into some of cinema's biggest box office failures and explore whether they deserve a second chance! As the spooky season unfolds, Troy and Brad tackle the supernatural horror film of 2023, The Exorcist: Believer. This sixth installment in the Exorcist series, directed by David Gordon Green, treats horror fans as if they've never experienced a well-crafted scare before. It's baffling how a film can simultaneously recycle horror clichés while attempting to address themes of faith with all the finesse of a sledgehammer. Let's face it: this movie is a mess, and the guys don't hold back in their critique, exposing the film's glaring flaws and their hatred of David Gordon Green. Save yourself the frustration; instead of subjecting yourself to this cinematic disappointment, seek out a genuinely good horror film that respects the genre, your intelligence, and your time. The Exorcist: Believer is directed by David Gordon Green and stars Leslie Odom Jr., Lidya Jewett, Olivia O'Neill, Jennifer Nettles, Norbert Leo Butz, Ann Dowd, and Ellen Burstyn Not A Bomb has has plenty of spooky designs in our Merch store! We are in the era of peak entertainment. Through our phones, computers and televisions, we have access to nearly every movie, album, TV show, book and video game ever created. You'd think many of us would decide it isn't necessary to leave our homes. In the Indianapolis area, that apparently is not the case. IBJ just published its 2024-25 arts and entertainment calendar, and the number of music, dance, comedy, literary, film and theatrical events—not to mention art fairs and exhibits— to choose from is astonishing for an area that two generations ago was known as “India-no-place.” IBJ arts reporter Dave Lindquist has curated a list of 125 artistically significant and culturally relevant offerings that our readers can trust will be worth their time. Looking at this list, we can learn a lot about how the arts and entertainment ecosystem in central Indiana has changed. Right off the bat, you'll see that the 125 picks represent 60 venues, many of which only recently debuted as suburban communities engage in an arts amenities arms race. Not only is Indianapolis now a regular stop for Broadway performers like Leslie Odom Jr., it's also a place that's developing work for Broadway. Movies and musicians just beginning to sniff international recognition come to Indianapolis to help gain momentum. And then there's the generation-defining cultural phenomenon, Taylor Swift, who has chosen Indianapolis for the climax of the Eras Tour in America. For this week's IBJ Podcast, Dave has culled 10 events from his list for deeper discussion, and host Mason King adds a few more. And then they start examining the potential impact and import of “Swiftianapolis,” coming in early November. The IBJ Podcast is brought to you by Taft.

Over the weekend, President Joe Biden announced that he would be stepping down as the nominee and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris. We've had every reaction imaginable: excitement, appreciation for Biden's great work, fear over the racist and sexist attacks that are already coming, and everything in between. But despite our anxieties we are energized and ready to go! The conversations we have with our friends and family in the next 100 days will be make or break for democracy. And we couldn't have asked for better timing with our guest this week because we are joined by Sam Schwartz, an inspiring Gen Z activist who is currently leading the youth-driven Tour To Save Democracy. Sam's cousin Alex was tragically killed in the Parkland school shooting, and ever since then Sam has been a passionate advocate against gun violence. We were thrilled to have his perspective on the 2024 election, what young people think about VP Harris, and how we can get Gen Z to the polls in November. Finally, Rachel, Amanda and Jasmine raise a glass to Leslie Odom Jr., spending time outdoors with family, and conversations with constituents in this week's Toast to Joy.You can watch a video of our virtual event with Heather Cox Richardson here on YouTube and view our Project 2025 toolkit here. And next week we have another exciting event with Senator Elizabeth Warren! This week on the show Karen is joined by Natalie Napoleon, a world renowned visual branding strategist and product photographer with over 25 years of experience. An expert at creating strong, unique visuals for brands, Natalie is always asked by indie brands “How can I compete with the big companies?” Luckily, that's where Natalie's passion lies. In this interview with Karen, Natalie is going to reveal her deepest secrets so that you, and your brand, can stand out and stand tall next to the giants of the industry. KEY TAKEAWAYS Most small companies don't have the marketing budgets of the big hitters and this can create the perception that they can't create impactful marketing campaigns. However, Natalie explains that money is not the boundary that people think it is and shares some tips on how you can create impactful images on a budget. Why is visual branding so important? Natalie shares her 7 key points on why it is so, including the ability to create brand recognition and an emotional connection with your audience. Creating a strong brand is so much more than just taking professional images. Natalie breaks down the elements that she delivers in her training course, such as how to build a consistent style, create a visual story and a repeatable system. The number one mistake people make is getting the product right and then thinking about branding. This year Kara Young broke a Tonys record, becoming the first Black person to receive three consecutive nominations and only the sixth person ever to do so. "It feels special that the third [nomination] is historical, but more historical in the sense that it's civil rights activist Ossie Davis' words that are being activated and recognized." Young's nomination is for the play ‘Purlie Victorious,' a comedy written by Davis in 1961 and revived for Broadway this year with Young and Leslie Odom Jr. "This is 63 years since its last production on Broadway, and I feel like for this play to be recognized is so important." Young says the script of ‘Purlie Victorious' is "such an American masterpiece of text" and that it was the diverse audiences that came to see the play that made it so special. "In the history of people being silenced, you are listening to a Black woman, a Black man, a Black cast, speak their truth, unapologetically speak Ossie Davis' words. How magical is that?" For Young, it's the power of plays that inspires her. "I feel like plays allow us to see each other as human." “The room where it happens …No one really knows how the game is playedThe art of the tradeHow the sausage gets madeWe just assume that it happens But no one else is in the room where it happens …When you got skin in the game, you stay in the gameBut you don't get a win unless you play in the game.”Welcome back to the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast. These excerpts were in a song by Leslie Odom Jr. and Lin-Manuel Miranda from Hamilton. But they could also be applied to the conversation Laurence Tosi of WestCap and I had today.Today's show is with someone who has been in the room where it happens. Stories and perspectives shared today were from someone who has helped turn bills into laws in private markets.Laurence Tosi has been part of building foundational technology businesses and companies in capital markets and private markets – from investing in and building Ipreo, iLevel, TMC Bonds, and Tradeweb as an executive at Merrill Lynch where he served as COO of Global Investment Banking and Trading, building Blackstone from 2008-2015 as the CFO, Management & Risk Committee Member, Head of the Tech Innovations Fund, and Blackstone Treasury Solutions Fund, and building and scaling Airbnb as CFO and Head of Payments, Customer Experience, and Corporate Development. At Merrill Lynch and Blackstone, L.T. deployed $500M of capital, returning over $1.6B without taking a loss. He's now building WestCap, a $7.6B growth investing firm that L.T. characterizes as an “operating equity firm” that helps founders and companies scale their businesses at the inflection point in between traditional venture capital and private equity. L.T. and WestCap have leveraged their collective operating knowledge to invest in a number of industry leaders, including two industry defining companies in private markets, iCapital and Addepar. They've also invested in the likes of SIMON, which was acquired by iCapital, GoodLeap, Sharegain, Klarna, Paxos, AccessFintech, Treasury4, Hopper, Avenue One, StubHub, and more.L.T. and I had a fascinating conversation that took us to a number of places. We discussed:Stories from building Blackstone. The deeper meaning behind Blackstone CEO Stephen Schwarzman's comment “scale is our niche” and how “scale begets skill.”Insights L.T. and the Blackstone team had around working with the wealth channel that enabled them to transform how Blackstone and the industry worked with private wealth. Why the realization that at Blackstone, they weren't selling to the end investor but that they were selling to the financial advisor was such a critical insight as they worked with the wealth channel. What it means to transform Blackstone from a firm into a business.Parallels and patterns L.T. took from building and investing in foundation market infrastructure businesses at Merrill Lynch and Blackstone to how they are investing in private markets at WestCap.L.T.'s learnings from a focus on customer experience and simplifying the product at Airbnb. What's the unlock for alternatives that harmonizes the industry? Why consortium is a “bad word” but why standardization will be so critical to the next phase of private markets. Why private equity firms have the best business models in finance. The difference between being in the business of building their business between being in the business of building your business and what L.T. is trying to accomplish at WestCap.Why L.T. believes in the partnership model for alternative asset managers and why he believes that's an enduring model.L.T., thanks so much for coming on the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast to share your wisdom, experience, and deep industry knowledge from being a pioneer in private markets.
It takes a brave creative team to give Exorcist II: The Heretic a run for its money as worst "Exorcist" film, but at least part two was lovably batshit and a work of care and pearsonal vision, even if that vision was really weird. The Worst of 2023 concludes and bookends our series with unnecessary sequels with The Exorcist: Believer, David Gordon Green's attempt to resurrect the series. Navigating a pivot in plans, Mary joins Caitlin to cover David Gordon Green's recent body of work. We mostly chat about Exorcist: Believer, but we also talk about DGG's Halloween trilogy. To put it kindly, we weren't huge fans of Exorcist: Believer - partly because it tries to cash in on nostalgia and politics in cringe ways, and partly because it's just a bad sequel. Not even Ann Dowd could save it! Good for Ellen Burstyn for getting that bag, though. Tangents include: general hater vibes, trends, engagement rings, Kohl's, suburban luxury, and Saltburn. Be sure to check out Skin of a Killer, the Twilight podcast we do with our buddy Charlie. Next week we'll be back with a regular review.
This week on The Treatment, Elvis sits down with Emmy-winning writer, director, and actor Dan Levy, whose follow up to the much loved comedy series Schitt's Creek is the Netflix film Good Grief. Levy wrote, directed and stars in the film. Next, director Andrew Haigh joins to talk about his latest film, the high-concept drama All of Us Strangers. And on The Treat, Tony winning actor Leslie Odom, Jr. talks about a rapper he'd like to see on Broadway.

A Tony winner for his performance as Aaron Burr in Hamilton, he is now starring on Broadway in the hit play Purlie Victorious. One of the secrets to his success: letting go.
Director David Gordon Green returns to ruin another beloved horror franchise. After making three terrible Halloween movies that we covered, this time Gordon Green sets out to destroy The Exorcist franchise. We put off covering this for as long as we could but eventually had to face it. This wretched Exorcist sequel stars Leslie Odom Jr., Lidya Jewett, Olivia O'Neill, Jennifer Nettles, Norbert Leo Butz, and Ann Dowd. And Gordon Green even got 90-year-old Ellen Burstyn to reprise her role as Chris MacNeil. And for what, Mr. Gordon Green?! I'm getting angry just thinking about this movie! Hear our devastating takedown of The Exorcist: Believer. It will be followed by another terrible sequel called The Exorcist: Deceiver in 2025, and we will witness that atrocity as well!
Do you believe that this sequel is good? It's going to take some strong faith on your part. Synopsis The Exorcist: Believer is a direct sequel to the original 1973 The Exorcist. In this film, we get not one, but two, that's right two possessions for the price of one. When two teenage girls go out into the woods to perform a séance, they disappear and reappear days later acting… strange. Their parents struggle to find out why the reason th... It's possession, they are possessed. The father of one of the girls played by Leslie Odom Jr. must recruit an Oceans 11 type ragtag group of exorcists and Chris MacNeil reprised by Ellen Burstyn, who I can only assume had an important boat she wanted to buy. Review of Exorcist: Believer NBCUniversal shelled out 400 million on the rights to The Exorcist IP and entrusted David Gordon Green to work his soft reboot magic that he showed with the Halloween franchise. They've committed to producing two more of these exorcist films, and after watching this one… I'm not a believer. Much like most of the previous sequel and prequels in the franchise, this film fails to recapture the humanity, darkness, and complexity of the original. You could point to the fact that they keep giving these movies to mediocre or hack directors, but even John Boorman fucked up The Exorcist 2, and he directed Deliverance. Also, since The Exorcist was released, it seems like there is rarely a year that goes by that there isn't an exorcism themed horror movie in theaters. It's a tired horror trope at this point. As a result, The Exorcist: Believer comes off as another generic possession movie going through the motions while skipping all the “boring” parts like relationships, character development, or mystery. A lot of eyes have rolled over some of the messaging in this movie about being woke. Ellen Burstyn's line about not being part of the damn patriarchy and being excluded from the original exorcism comes off as heavy handed and completely detached from the story of the original film. I think Chris MacNeil's character is the greatest casualty of this film. However, I think the root problem is that in trying to make Exorcism more inclusive and exploring the universality of evil, it comes off as wishy washy and noncommittal. Score 3/10 https://youtu.be/RAR4_7LCDIg
When Tony and Grammy Award winner Leslie Odom Jr. takes on a project, he puts everything he's got into it. Admittedly a bit of a perfectionist, he's tried to embrace imperfection on his new album of original songs, “When a Crooner Dies.” He chats with Tom about the album and reveals what it's like to return to Broadway for the first time since his starring role in “Hamilton.”

This week on The Treatment, Elvis welcomes Tony, Grammy, and Emmy award winning actor Leslie Odom, Jr., — currently starring in the revival of the 1961 Ossie Davis play “Purlie Victorious” on Broadway. Next, LA Times TV critic Lorraine Ali joins to talk about the late Suzanne Somers' fight for equal pay on Three's Company, and the ripple effect it caused. This early passion for storytelling never left her, even when she pursued business in college. To succeed in Hollywood, you have to want it more than everybody else. Adhrucia stresses that it's not about talent, connections or who you know - it's about determination. The people who make it are the ones who simply want it the most and are willing to work harder than anyone else to achieve it. Learn the business side of your creative industry. Adhrucia went back to learn the money and economics of the entertainment business, even though she was initially allergic to anything financial. This allowed her to better understand how to create and sell her work, and gave her more creative freedom. Have confidence in a backup skill.
