The crew journey'd down to the Casey Jones Distillery and spent time with the COO Cody Turner. Going to Casey Jones is a step back in time. We were greeted at the door, had a tour with a great host April and experienced some cool tours that are open for everyone to enjoy. The history and story of this hidden gem is there in Hopkinsville, KY.
Square Stills, Moonshine, and Two Total Eclipses Ever seen a square pot still? No? Me neither. Apparently, for moonshiners in the Land Between the Rivers (now Land Between the Lakes) region, square stills were all the rage - they could be loaded into the back of a pickup truck, easily disassembled, and still put out high quality moonshine. And nobody did it better than Arlen Jones, better known as "Casey" because he only sold moonshine by the case. Casey ended up in prison twice, the final time leading to him getting out of the still-making business for good. Fast forward a few decades, and in a truly ironic twist, the government came calling for him to make one more still (a working one, no less!) for the Land Between the Lakes visitors center - and he did. That still stands today in the Casey Jones Distillery. When Casey's grandson, AJ, discovered his family's history (it was a poorly held secret), he decided to get into the game himself, too. A decade or so later, they have four mashbills of whiskey, are growing rapidly, and are the official bourbon of not one but TWO eclipses (they were in the line of totality for the 2017 solar eclipse and just outside of it for the April 2024 one). Finally, they're also members of the State Line Trail with MB Roland in Kentucky and Old Glory Distilling in Tennessee - look for my episode with Paul at MB Roland next week! In this episode, I had the pleasure of interviewing Cody Turner from Casey Jones Distillery, located in western Kentucky. We delved into the history and ethos of the brand, as well as their unique approach to crafting bourbon. Cody shared the fascinating story of Casey Jones, the namesake of the distillery, who was a still builder during Prohibition. Casey's claim to fame was his ability to create unique square pot stills, which eventually led to his arrest. However, the federal government later commissioned him to build a still for the Land Between the Lakes area. We discussed the different expressions offered by Casey Jones Distillery, including their moonshine, barrel cut bourbons, and their upcoming releases. Cody highlighted their commitment to transparency, with detailed information about mash bills and barrel aging on their labels. We also explored the growing trends in the bourbon industry, such as blending, transparent sourcing, and finishing casks. Cody emphasized that Casey Jones Distillery is well-positioned to excel in the finishing category, with their barrel cut product serving as a versatile tool for creating unique and flavorful expressions. Lastly, we discussed the various experiences offered at the distillery, including tours and tastings, as well as their upcoming special events and releases. Cody invited listeners to join their email newsletter and follow them on social media for updates on these exciting offerings. https://www.caseyjonesdistillery.com/ https://www.facebook.com/caseyjonesdistillery https://www.instagram.com/caseyjonesdistillery/ https://www.youtube.com/c/caseyjonesdistillery https://www.tiktok.com/@caseyjonesdistillery https://twitter.com/CaseysCut
Eucharist. Communion. The Last Supper. The Great Thanksgiving. It's the focal point of our worship service, but what does this bread-breaking really mean? We've brought in an expert to discuss. Father Cody Turner is the Curate for Worship at Church of the Incarnation in Dallas, Texas. In this educational and approachable conversation, we talk about what it means to “live into” the sacraments, the meaning of “real presence” in the bread and wine, what Episcopalians believe about communion, why children take communion in our church, and more. In the Season One Finale of JUST THE TIP-STERS, Melissa is joined on the phone by Michelle Kramer Joe - whose son - Cody Turner - disappeared without a trace in July 2015 after going out for the night and never returning to his grandparents' home in Yakima, Washington. Michelle has spent the last three years struggling to keep Cody's name in the forefront of police and the press, both of which she believes have never given their full attention to the case due to the stigma attached to Cody's drug and alcohol abuse. As Melissa points out in her discussion with Michelle, it DOES NOT MATTER what sort of mistakes one has made in life - NO ONE deserves to be forgotten and EVERYONE's life has meaning. Join Melissa as she closes out 2018 with a heart- wrenching plea from a mother for clues that might lead to finding her son. JUST THE TIP-STERS/SEASON TWO DEBUTS ON JANUARY 8, 2019.
