Dom Giordano, WPHT host and former teacher, has dedicated much of his daily show toward parents who are taking it into their own hands to push back against school boards that have a negative impact on their children. This has culminated in a weekly podcast on education, Readin', Writin', and Reason, which has allowed wonderful relationships to develop between Giordano, educators, and parents throughout the country who are speaking out against overbearing school boards. First, Dom Giordano welcomes in Lindsie Rank, Student Press Council at FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression), to hear about a situation unfolding at Conestoga High School. Since the early 1960's, every year, the student newspaper, The SPOKE, would publish a ‘destination map,' that would show where graduates are going to college. This year, after a student complaint, the district has threatened to remove funding for the paper if they publish the map again. The district argues that this is in an effort to promote equity, but Rank explains the implications on the First Amendment that such a demand holds. Rank explains how students are pushing back, and explains how and why this is another case of censorship in schools in the guise of equity. Then, IDom welcomes in Steve Feldman, Greater Philadelphia Director of the Zionist Organization of America, back onto the Dom Giordano Program to discuss a concerning event that took place at Gladwynne Elementary in the Lower Merion School District. In late March, the school had a Cultural Heritage Night, and featured a display for Palestine, which included Palestine Liberation Organization flags, assertions that Jerusalem is the capitol of Palestine, and other anti-Israel and anti-Semitic propaganda. Feldman explains what he hopes the Lower Merion School District will do to remediate the situation, and tells listeners how they can help the Zionist Organization of America. Then, Dom hears from Joan Cullen, board member at Pennridge School District, who called in to discuss a Philadelphia Inquirer article about her District's 7-1 vote that would prevent students from using restrooms, locker rooms, and showers designated for the opposite sex.
Full Hour | In today's second hour, Dom welcomes Colonel Allen B. West and Stan Casacio back onto the Dom Giordano Program live in studio as the Colonel comes to the Philadelphia region for an event tonight in Whitemarsh Township. Dom, Allen, and Stan run through multiple topics of the day, each offering their own thoughts and breakdown of both the border situation and Trump's Town Hall last night. Also, Stan tells more about the event, and Allen goes in-depth into his history as both a scubadiver and skydiver, something he learned to enjoy while in the service. Then, Dom Giordano welcomes in Lindsie Rank, Student Press Council at FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression), to hear about a situation unfolding at Conestoga High School. Full Hour | Today, Dom led off the Dom Giordano Program by discussing a situation unfolding at Conestoga High School, after threats started to fly following a student walk out to protest masking mandates in the Tredyffrin Easttown school district. Then, Giordano discusses Ben Simmons comments made in his introductory press conference for the Brooklyn Nets, lamenting that Simmons continues to lean on a false mental health as justification for his actions over the last half year. Also, Giordano asks his side question for the day, telling that because of Dan's upcoming wedding, he'd love to hear suggestions for a first dance song. Then, Giordano gives an update on Krasnerland, the name he's given the crime-ridden Philadelphia under the reign of Larry Krasner, telling of a new ‘mental health script' that 911 operators have to read, leading to extended wait times when dialing the emergency service. Full Hour | In today's second hour, Conestoga High father Andrew McLellan and his attorney Gary Samms join the Dom Giordano Program to discuss a controversy unfolding at the high school in the Tredyffrin-Easttown school district after threats were levied following a student-ran walkout protesting masking mandates. McLellan's son was one of many who faced violent and racist threats after being one of the organizers of the protest, which stems from a lawsuit presented by McLellan and other parents against the district over overbearing mask mandates. McLellan and Samms contextualize the situation from their viewpoint, and tell what the school district has done to lead both parents and students feeling they have no other option than to create a disruption. Then, Giordano continues the discussion centered on the controversy at Conestoga High School, asking listeners what they drew from the interview with Samms and McLellan. After that, Giordano and his producers discuss the side question in depth, taking caller suggestions for great songs for a first dance between a bride and a groom. Finally, producer Dan brings his Dan Time with Dom, providing an update on both the Ben Simmons and James Harden introductory press conferences after the trade between the Philadelphia 76ers and Brooklyn Nets. This is the fourth and final episode in our exploration of the theme community this month, and I want to say from the start, that this conversation you're about to hear on equity, community, and culture has been one that I've been struggling with recently. There are many challenges and tensions that we face in schools and education today, but none may be more complex than the one surrounding equity in terms of race and gender. There's no question that white male privilege is finally being challenged in many healthy ways, and around the world I think what we're seeing is perhaps the last gasp for white males attempting to maintain power over the narrative of society. That's long overdue, but we have a very long way to go. "I Don't Know What to Do" For me personally, that struggle hit home about a month ago at a workshop I attended in Pittsburgh put on by Education Reimagined, a non-profit group out of Washington, DC. It was, in a word, transformative for me. As we were discussing ways that we could bring the idea of learner-centered education to schools as a way of changing the experience of school for the better for all kids, a number of people of color in attendance gave impassioned reflections on what it was like to live in a culture and a society that is still dominated by primarily white narratives. They argued with great emotion and frankness that these issues of equity reached well beyond schools and classrooms, and that there was still little widespread understanding of the injustices and fears that People of Color still carry with them today. It left me deeply moved, and to some extent speechless. I was almost happy when the white education secretary of a Central US state stood up at the end and said, "I don't know what to do" because she took the words out of my mouth. Since that weekend, I've been reflecting deeply on my own biases, on the societal narratives that re so rooted in white history, and on what I can do to not be complicit in perpetuating them. I know I'm at the start of a journey, one that for me begins with reading the book White Fragility, and also begins with bringing more voices of people of color and sexual orientation into my networks and my interactions. Creating Cultures of Community Which leads me to today's interview with Tricia Ebarvia. Tricia is in her 19th year teaching high school English, and she’s the department chairperson at Conestoga High School in Berwyn, PA, located outside Philadelphia. She was a Heinemann Fellow from 2016-2018, where she wrote regularly about creating an inclusive literacy classroom, and she's developed into a leading voice around anti-bias, anti-racist pedagogy. She co-founded the #DisruptTexts conversation on Twitter and elsewhere, and she's the co-director of the Pennsylvania Writing and Literature Project. Tricia and I talk about the difficulties of creating cultures of community, the many biases that educators bring to their work, and some ways in which we can begin to build more understanding of equity, race, and gender issues into our personal lives and into our classrooms. I learned a lot from our conversation and I hope you will as well. Don't forget, if you like what you hear today, please head on over to iTunes and give us some love via a review and rating, and I hope that you'll continue the conversation around story with us in our modernlearners community.
