As we approach the inauguration of a new president here in the United States, it's hard to ignore the strong emotions and differing perspectives that have come to define this moment. Whether you feel hopeful, anxious, or uncertain, one truth remains clear: times of change call for us to ground ourselves in peace. Not the kind of peace that depends on external circumstances, but the kind that begins within us—a deep, steady calm that no headline or debate can shake. Inner peace is not about tuning out the world or ignoring what matters; it's about finding the strength to engage with life from a place of balance and clarity. When we cultivate this inner calm, we give ourselves the gift of responding rather than reacting. We create space for thoughtful action, meaningful connection, and even the possibility of healing. For many of us, these past months and years have felt heavy. The constant stream of news and the divisive nature of our conversations can leave us feeling overwhelmed. That's why I believe now, more than ever, it's essential to prioritize practices that nurture our minds and hearts. It's not a luxury—it's a necessity. When we take time to center ourselves, we become more resilient and more equipped to show up in the ways the world needs. To support this, I've created a 10-minute guided meditation designed to help you reconnect with your inner calm. In this meditation, we focus on three powerful tools: grounding, gratitude, and self-compassion. Grounding helps us feel stable and present, even in uncertain times. Gratitude shifts our perspective, reminding us of the good that exists despite the challenges. And self-compassion allows us to hold space for our own emotions without judgment, offering kindness to ourselves as we navigate life. It only takes 10 minutes, but the ripple effects can last much longer. Whether you're starting your day, taking a break, or winding down in the evening, this practice is a simple way to reconnect with the peace that's already within you. In moments of change, it's easy to feel like we're at the mercy of the world around us. But the truth is, we always have the power to create calm within. When we do, we can better navigate the noise, build bridges instead of barriers, and hold space for understanding and growth. So today, I encourage you to take a breath. Give yourself the gift of stillness. Not because the world isn't worth engaging with, but because you are worth showing up for—steady, clear, and strong. With peace and encouragement, James P.S. If you enjoyed this meditation, let me know in the comments! And don't forget to like, subscribe, and share with someone who might benefit from a little peace today. Because the new year is a time filled with challenges,  goal setting and attempts to turn new routines into flourishing habits; how fitting is it that in the new year, we would dig into James, a book that challenges professed believers to evaluate their lives and determine whether their faith is evident in their works.  As we dive into the book of James, it is my hope that our study will encourage each of us to declare that in this new year and in the years to come we will live lives where our faith in God is evident for all to see. When Kathryn Wombacher suspected her husband, Walter Andrew, of having an affair in the spring of 1920, she hired a private detective to follow him on one of his many “out-of-town” trips that he'd taken in their short marriage. However, rather than follow Walter out of town, the private detective tracked the man less than a mile from his home in Hollywood, where he discovered that Walter had indeed been carrying on a relationship with another woman—but that was to be the least of Kathryn's worries.Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAssociated Press. 1920. Please rate & review The Movies on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever else you listen to the show! --- For their short, WRECKED A BUNCH OF CARS, HAD A GOOD TIME, directors James P. Gannon & Matt Ferrin had to learn to place faith into their film stock. The movie, which documents a Connecticut demolition derby through driver interviews and on-the-ground footage, was filmed in one frenzied evening with sub-optimal light and only a handful of chances to nab the right shots. In the moment, there's no way to certify quality, so having faith in their film stock and skills was the only solution. The result was a frenetic joy of a piece, molded with a similar scrappy love to the kind that demo derby drivers employ in gutting their junkers and designing them in a manner suiting their larger-than-life personas. In my interview with Gannon and Ferrin, they discuss the do-or-die attitude that got this short made, the strange benefits of using expired film and provide an update of the feature film for which this short would be a proof-of-concept. Whether or not Einstein said it, the principle behind it is incredibly powerful. By making small, consistent improvements—just like compounding interest—you can see exponential growth in almost any area of life.Compounding Interest and 1% Daily ImprovementIf you improve by just 1% every day, that adds up much faster than most people expect. Over the course of a year, those 1% gains can compound into something like 37 times better performance. While this example simplifies things a bit, the principle of compounding is key here. It's about getting a little better each day and letting those gains multiply over time.Pareto Principle (80/20 Rule)Sanni, Anthony. The 80/20 Way to Productivity: Do More by Doing Less. Please rate & review The Movies on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever else you listen to the show!---Fantastic Fest hosts a wealth of shorts, celebrating the eclectic mix of filmmakers who make them. That being said, there was no way in hell I could cover this year's fest and not watch any, so today's episode gets into demolition derby mayhem: WRECKED A BUNCH OF CARS, HAD A GOOD TIME.Directors James P. Gannon & Matt Ferrin are currently working on a feature: HANDPAN, about a demolition derby driver stranded in the desert with only a case of beer for survival. Aspiring to shoot some test footage, their producer landed the duo and their crew an opportunity to cover the Durham Fair's demolition derby in Durham, Connecticut. What results is a dive into a world of junkers, clashing steel, DIY spray paint jobs and a gleefully reckless abandon of self-preservation.Shot with Super 8 and 16mm film cameras, the movie boasts all the grain and glory of the medium, including the happy accidents that come with using expired film. (This shit ain't cheap. Use what you have.) Whether it's the deep shadows or rich color, the movie looks gorgeous, almost as though we've time-warped into the '70s. Gannon & Ferrin play around with editing tricks of the period too; it's a nice touch. This isn't a complex feature. It essentially just plays out the event from beginning to end, but where it succeeds is in translating the anticipation, the giddiness, the pulse-pumping energy of a demolition derby through its pacing, handheld camera work and editing. This short's officially placed Durham, CT on my map & as this year's demolition derby rages on THE WEEK I POST THIS REVIEW, I wish all drivers (but especially Andrew cause he's my favorite) the best of luck.---Follow The Movies on Twitter: @TheMovies_Pod and Facebook: The Movies (I have ONE slot remaining for October's listener request episode. Though James has "made it" he didn't start out a flashy NYC Master Real Estate Investor, in fact, he began as an english major with no aspirations of real estate. He chalks landing in real estate as a stroke of fate born out of being in the right place at the right time, and the insight to listen and learn.     James talks to Gino and Julia doing business the "right way," and the mindset that is involved. Julia speaks about relationships with significant others and much in the same way that James talks about doing business the "right way" Julia connects that it's also necessary to empathize with your spouse and put yourself in their shoes. Empathy leads to compassion and the daily grind of life does become easier as children get older and you fall into a groove with your business.   During COVID James and his wife Allison wanted to take advantage of the time they had, that led to a podcast “The Insiders Edge to Real Estate Investing”, The Podcast in-turn led to a book by the same name.    Gino talks about continuing education and surrounding yourself with the right people, and praises James for continuing to grind while still building relationships. While James discusses the mindset, mentality and drive that puts people in the right spot. James continues on to explain scaling his business and building his team and speaks to the nuances of finding players that work better as a whole than apart. Julia wraps it up by bringing Gino and James back from real estate talk and focusing on how to deal with work and home life and the necessity of bridging the two together while maintaining sanity and structure.

This week Oli and James P are joined by a special guest: Cosworth engine designer Matt Grant. Listen to an F1 nerd's dream as Matt reveals the secrets of Cosworth V10 and V8 engines from the late 1990s to 2013. We ask Matt about designing a V10 and V8 engine, how they compare to today's immensely complex power units, and how an engine made its way into a car after a team had agreed to use Cosworth V10/V8 We hear about Matt's first two seasons in 1997 and 1998.  After a successful first season and tricky times in 1998, Cosworth jumped back to the front of the grid in 1999 with Johnny Herbert's famous win for Stewart at the Nurburgring. We find out Matt's thoughts on Ford buying Cosworth and works team Stewart in 1999, and how this affected Cosworth going into 2000. How did Cosworth interact with such a huge manufacturer? Matt gives us details on how the engine developed under the Jaguar name, and his thoughts on the blockbuster buyout from Red Bull after Ford sold Cosworth and Stewart in 2004. We get an insight into what happens when an F1 team fails: Arrows were a customer in 2002, but sadly went under midway through the season. With F1's "new teams" arriving in 2010, we hear about Cosworth's involvement as an engine supplier to all three teams. We get the details of h the final few weeks of the team's existence. Listen in Matt tells about his venture Modatek, and how it came about. We hear how these classic bespoke Cosworth engines are maintained, as well as his all-time favourite Cosworth engine and car combination. For extra nerdy goodness, here are some Cosworth V10 facts from Matt! Cosworth TJ V10 stats: Max power = 900 bhp, which equates to 300 hp/litre – the DFV only created 140 hp/litre when it first ran. Max speed = 19,000 rpm, which means that the piston moves up and down 300 times per second, which is 30 times in the blink of an eye. At this speed the piston goes from zero to over 60 mph and back to zero in a distance of just 44 mm, with only the two big end bolts stopping it from escaping. To keep the piston in the engine, the con rod bolts have to withstand a 3,000 kg load, which is more than the weight of a Range Rover, and the bolt thread is only 9mm. -- Keep up to date with all the latest Formula 1 News @ www.formulanerds.com -- Follow Us: Facebook - www.Facebook.com/FormulaNerds Twitter - www.twitter.com/Formula_Nerds Instagram www.instagram.com/FormulaNerds -- For Advertising & Sponsorship Opportunities:- Email Business@FormulaNerds.com Learn more about your ad choices. Cut To The Race | By FormulaNerds

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 11, 2023 41:48

The FormulaNerds Team return for a special episode of News from the Nerds to discuss a potential 11th team joining the sport. James M is joined by Sam and James P to cover and discuss the ongoing story: The row over Andretti's F1 entry continues to rumble on. FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem has now thrown his support behind the bid in a public intervention.  Andretti's bid to enter F1 has been met with pessimism by the teams for the last two seasons. Owner Michael Andretti has taken a new approach to turn the tide of opinion. After the FIA announced it would investigate new teams to join F1, Andretti announced its intentions to tie up with General Motors and Cadillac to enhance its chances. No public concerns were raised by F1 at the announcement, however, President Ben Sulayems's recent tweet condemning supposed negative reaction indicates F1 is still wary of Andretti's entry. The FIA President has become the most vocal support for Andretti as it chases a place on the grid. Speaking during a press conference at the Dakar Rally, Autosport quotes the FIA president as stating that new team entries form part of the “sustainability of the sport”. He added that up to 12 teams can be on the grid in the future: “Today there are two sides of sustainability. There is sustainability of the environment, and there is sustainability of the sport. If you want to sustain the sport, you have to open it to the rest of the manufacturers. And to us, we are allowed to have 12 teams on the grid”. Showing further support, Ben Sulayem highlighted General Motors's position as an engine manufacturer, stating “we should be encouraging them to come to Formula 1”. He added that he “needs a reason why” the sport would not welcome Andretti or General Motors. For our final Nerdy V10s special show, James P is joined by James M to interview a friend of the FormulaNerds Jan Magnussen, as we dive into his F1 career. Jan's career started in 1995 as McLaren test driver, before debuting later that year. Moving to Stewart Grand Prix for 1997, Jan remained with the team until midway through 1998. We ask Jan about attending the launch of the ill-fated 1995 McLaren, and hear the very unique reason Nigel Mansell started his short McLaren career in Team Principal Ron Dennis's bad books. Jan tells us about making his debut for the iconic McLaren team in 1995, and the preparation needed to race in place of the injured Mika Hakkinen. After his move to Stewart Grand Prix for the 1997 season, Jan tells us about his struggles, and how ultimately his career ended in the sport but led to a highly successful career in sports car racing.
