The 1949-50 CCNY Beavers basketball team were one of the unlikeliest of champions in sports history. CCNY was a tuition-free in Harlem, New York, intended to give working class students the best education possible. The school was comprised of minorities, many of whom were the immigrants or children of immigrants. In 1949-50, the CCNY squad, led by legendary coach Nat Holman, shocked the basketball world by becoming the first and only school to win the N.I.T. and N.C.A.A. tournaments in the same scene. At a time when college basketball was much more popular in New York than the fledgling NBA, the CCNY boys became the talk of the town and heroes to millions. The following season, several members of the CCNY team, including the entire starting five, were arrested as part of a massive point shaving scandal that had engulfed the entire collegiate basketball scene in New York City. Overnight, the CCNY boys went from heroes to villains. Their dreams of playing in the NBA were dashed and gambling scandal became a stigma which attached to them for the rest of their lives. The scandal was so persuasive that many members of the New York Police Department were caught up in it, leading to the resignation of the chief of police and the mayor. Matthew Goodman's The City Game: Triumph, Scandal, and a Legendary Basketball Team (Ballantine Books, 2019) is not just a book about basketball. It is a journey through life in New York City in the late 1940s and early 1950s, a window into how big cities ran in the mid-20th century, an inside look at the world of sports gambling, a story of corruption, and ultimately, a tale of working class people and the decisions they are faced with. Through the use of meticulous research, Goodman delves into the complex characters of the basketball players involved and how the scandal affected their lives moving forward. The reader is left to ponder one crucial question: Would I have taken the money had I been in their position? Paul Knepper is an attorney and writer who was born and raised in New York and currently resides in Austin. He used to write about basketball for Bleacher Report and his first book about the New York Knicks Teams of the 1990s is due out this year. In a week when the imposition of US tariffs by an increasingly unstable federal government weaponized by white nationalism pushes the US and global economies towards global recession and depression, the University of South Carolina Women's Basketball Team highlights ongoing tensions between race, power, and control in U.S. society. While Black students make up only 10% of USC's student body, they represent over a quarter of the state's population. Meanwhile, South Carolina's political power is shaped by hyper-gerrymandered districts, allowing white nationalist control, seen in actions like the state legislature's recent ban on DEI initiatives. The most potent DEI force in modern world history is the equity that blends the diversity in and inclusion of a full range of racial identities that mask under the label âWhite.ââMarch Madnessâ centers Black bodies on Basketball courts contrasted by predominantly white bands, cheerleaders, and fans whose own lives stand in sharp contrast to the lives of the families of those who entertain them in the arenas, making unavoidable issues of representation and control. In the week marking the 57th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination and funeral, we consider moral, ethical, and political challenges to those resisting diversity, revealing that their motives are rooted in full spectrum dominance, not dislike.Collective struggles for equity reveal clashing and irreconcilable societal visions.JOIN KNARRATIVE: https://www.knarrative.com it's the only way to get into #Knubia, where these classes areheld live with a live chat.To shop Go to:TheGlobalMajorityMore from us:Knarrative Twitter: https://twitter.com/knarrative_Knarrative Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/knarrative/In Class with Carr Twitter: https://twitter.com/inclasswithcarrSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Yeshiva University's men's basketball team rose to prominence during a Cinderella run in the 2021-22 season, earning the league's longest winning streak under star Ryan Turell and snatching the number-one seed in Division III basketball. Now, the team is back in the national spotlight for a different reason: a new documentary that follows the boys as they navigate their 2023-24 season in a post-Oct. 7 world. Rebound: A Year of Triumph and Tragedy at Yeshiva University Basketball premiered in April 2025 on FOX Nation. The team, which had six Israeli players on the roster, deliberated whether to cancel their season outright or play on. They ended up taking a mid-season trip to Israel, where they visited family and bore witness to the recent tragedy, ultimately deciding to use their platform to support Israel publicly. Director Pat Dimon joins Menschwarmers to discuss why he felt compelled to tell this story and what it was like following the team all the way to the Skyline Conference championships. Yeshiva University, in New York City, has the NCAA's only all-Jewish basketball team which has been celebrated in the past few years for having record- breaking seasons including a 50-game win streak that ended in 2020. When the Hamas terror attacks of October 7th happened, with six students from Israel playing, the team struggled with the decision to continue their season or cancel it, while some players wanted to return to Israel and fight alongside the IDF. The story of the team's struggle is told in full in a new documentary, âRebound: A Year of Triumph and Tragedy at Yeshiva University Basketball,â which is now on 'Fox Nation'. FOX's Eben Brown speaks with Rabbi Dr. Ari Berman, President of Yeshiva University in New York City, who says the school's basketball team is a true inspiration to other students at a time when the Jewish community could use a sense of normalcy.
