In this episode, Clare is joined by Christine Mullaney who is a TEDx speaker and the host of the Connected Communication podcast. Christine shares her journey which took her from Ireland to China, Australia, The Outback, Poland, and now Spain. She explains what was behind each of these moves, how she adapted, and the role empathy and the language of the universe have played in helping her communicate and feel at home in all of these countries. KEY TAKEAWAYS Use your regrets to learn lessons in life and stop yourself from missing more opportunities. There are stages to culture shock. Understanding what they are and preparing for them will help you to settle in faster. Culture shock happens when you move back to your home country as well as when you move abroad. You need to learn to adapt, but you have to be careful not to over-adapt and lose yourself. Empathy and authenticity matter, people across the world respond positively to those qualities. Empathy enables you to communicate effectively, often, despite language barriers and significant cultural differences. When you feel fear, acknowledge that you are feeling it, ask where it comes from, and decide what to do about it. BEST MOMENTS ‘Spain is where my soul sings. ´ ‘Opportunity costs. There is always. a cost to pursuing opportunities.' ‘Language isn´t just words.' Breastfeeding & weaning your toddler with confidence and connection isn't impossible. But the reason it feels that way (at least some of the time) isn't your fault. In today's podcast episode I break down the first of 3 cultural traps that keep you stuck and frustrated on your natural term breastfeeding & toddler weaning journey. (The other 2 are available in my free instant-access workshop here!)The trap? The belief/instinct to start by changing your child's behavior first. What does it look like? ->Deciding it's time to wean->Shorten feeds/dropping feeds/reading the weaning story books->...and your child asks to breastfeed more, not less (and at an increasing volume.)Tune in to learn how to get un-stuck from this trap (and avoid it if you haven't fallen in yet!)Want to learn more from me? “If you're not advertising in the Latino space now... in twenty years you're just not going to be relevant.” - Julio Ricardo Valera Growing up bilingual and bicultural in Puerto Rico and the Bronx, Julio Ricardo Valera didn't see media that was made for him by people who looked like him. Establishment media (and big advertisers) have long misunderstood that the Latino community is far from a monolith, and younger Latinos like Valera simply aren't served by Univision alone. A Gen-X Harvard graduate, Valera's desire for English-language Latino-focused media that catered to the younger generation of Latinos led him to create Latino Rebels in 2011. Because Valera has been able to build a loyal, underserved audience, that he can speak directly to through the audio medium he can now definitively state “our demographic is exactly the kind of Latino demographic that you want to be looking for.” And it's paying off. His shows have attracted such big brands as Progressive, Miller Light, Don Julio, and Oxford Road's own Indeed.
