Start to Stop Toddler Breastfeeding by Jenna Wolfe is dedicated to supporting moms breastfeeding and weaning their older babies, toddlers and preschoolers, and those who are hoping to make it that far and want to set themselves up for success.  You wanted to breastfeed for years, not months, but I bet you didn’t expect gymnurstrics, skin crawling with every latch, nipple twiddling, meltdowns, and still having sleepless nights. In this podcast you will find everything you need to extended breastfeed, full-term wean and even tandem feed without losing your mind (or your toddler’s trust). We will also cover nutrition, supporting healthy emotional and social development in your child, and so much more.  You will find fireside chats with incredible experts like Krystyn Parks of Feeding Made Easy, Samantha Radford of Evidence-Based Mommy, and more. You will leave every episode feeling like you have found your people and have a new-found confidence in your breastfeeding and parenting.  If you are looking to make some changes in your breastfeeding relationship with your older baby or child, make sure to download the free “Making Changes” communication guide & cheat sheet so that you can say “no” to the feed while saying “yes” to the need.  www.ownyourparentingstory.com/guide

It's been a hot minute since I've posted a new episode, but I am here!I'm also working on new content and resources - let me know what you want to hear about here. As I have been navigating diagnosis, treatment, and recovery from a number of health issues while also serving breastfeeding toddler families, I have noticed a few parallels between my own path to health, and the path to breastfeeding & weaning ease. In this episode I share about my own my sense of "felt safety" around wasps - yellow jackets to be exact, and how the timeline of the ebb and flow of the intensity of my fear coincided with the timeline of the intensity of my stress/overwhelm. I use that parallel to describe how our stress as humans shows up in our breastfeeding & parenting. From there, I provide 2 different ways to support a felt sense of safety so that you can in turn cultivate ease in your breastfeeding (and most other areas of life!):#1 - Soaking in the positive moments (because our negativity bias feeds our fear/stress). #2 - Meeting our fears/stress with kindness and self-compassion (because ignoring, catastrophizing, and/or arguing with ourselves only serves to reinforce and grow our fears and stress.) Try these 2 things out this week and then use the "fan mail"/text me option to let me know how they have made a difference for you.  Grab your free guide to say "No" to the feed while still saying "yes" to the need at www.ownyourparentingstory.com/guideLove this episode?! This week I'm answering a coaching call question from an extended breastfeeding mom:"My toddler often doesn't accept dad at night when she wakes up crying. I am and have always been the preferred parent.  I have just found out about a work trip I need to take which will have me away from my 2-year-old overnight for the first time.  Typically, I feed her to sleep and to resettle throughout the night.  If I am out of the house for bedtime, she does goes to sleep for other people, but it often takes a lot longer than if I am doing bedtime. Wondering if you had any tips that might help them both prepare for my work trip over the next few weeks and allow dad to be involved in general?"While there are a lot of things can be done to indirectly support a family in this situation, in this podcast episode, I break down a simple 3 part strategy to support a non-breastfeeding parent & a breastfed toddler for their first night(s) alone together. Whether you decide to night wean ahead of time or not (and I do explore this a little more in the episode), bolstering and leveraging your child's connection with the person who will be caring for them is key to a relaxing time apart. Find more opportunities for playful interactions between dad & kiddo (without pulling back from your own playful interactions with your child.)  Utilizing "bridging" tools to help your child feel connected with you even when you are apart and help that separation feel less scary and intense. Expand the non-breastfeeding caregiver's capacity to hold space for the feelings that may come up. Resources Mentioned: https://developingchild.harvard.edu/science/key-concepts/serve-and-return/Want to learn more from me? **SUBMIT YOUR Q FOR ME TO ANSWER IN FUTURE EPISODES**In this week's episode of Start to Stop Toddler Breastfeeding, I'm answering a question I received from a student in Own Your Breastfeeding Story. "How can I encourage my 2 year old to settle down when he is on the bed with us? We cosleep and most of the time especially in the morning when he wakes up, after he nurses from me, he immediately goes to wake up our 4 month old, or will start making big movements that will wake her up. We try to explain to him that when the newborn is sleeping (or anyone) we whisper and we try not to disturb them.Is this an unrealistic expectation of a toddler?  What else can we do? "This kind of situation comes up in lots of different contexts - and for tandem breastfeeding moms, it can feel particularly loaded. Breastfeeding is your number one tool, but maybe your toddler isn't interested, or maybe YOU aren't interested.  Are you destined to have a horrible day that begins with a stressful morning? In the episode I share a few different things to consider, and give some practical support: 1 - Check in with YOUR expectations first.  2 - Set your little one up for success by talking about this issue outside of the moment. 3 - Support them to have something else to do.  4 - Playfully engage with them to put them into a receptive state and avoid having to tell them what to do/not to do altogether.  Want to learn more from me? In this episode, I discuss the challenges of weaning your booby-obsessed toddler when they're not quite ready to stop breastfeeding. I explore the role of internal experiences, stress, and co-regulation in this process.Key Points:You Can't Magically Make Them Ready: Unfortunately, you can't instantly make your toddler ready to wean - no matter how badly you might want to! It's important to understand that their internal experiences and feelings can't be changed on a whim - but that doesn't mean you don't have anything within your control...The Toddler Breastfeeding Stress Spiral: I delve into the "toddler breastfeeding stress cycle" where a stressed parent can lead to more frequent breastfeeding, creating a cycle of stress for both child and parent. This is the part you CAN control!Addressing Your Internal Experience: By addressing your own internal experiences and managing your stress, you can turn down the dial of intensity in your child's breastfeeding demands and clinginess.  But, your ability to influence your toddler's readiness doesn't stop there.External Stressors: Examine your child's environment to identify external stressors that might be affecting them. Reducing these stressors can empower your child to handle the stress associated with weaning more effectively.Empowering Your Child: Weaning is a big change, and if they haven't stopped breastfeeding on their own they probably aren't "ready to stop" - BUT if you have laid the foundation well, you can empower them to move through the change of weaning without too much stress.  And the stress that is there will be met with connection & co-regulation from you that will strengthen your bond. Upcoming Workshop: Don't forget to register for the upcoming workshop on October 27th at 2 p.m. Eastern, where I'll dive deeper into these topics and answer your questions. The replay will be available if you can't attend live.Stay Tuned: In the next podcast episode, I'll be talking about how to know if YOU are truly ready to wean. Thank you for tuning in to this episode.Want to learn more from me? 30: Clogged Ducts, Engorgement & Mastitis in extended breastfeeding, weaning & beyond

Engorgement, clogged ducts & mastitis are words all breastfeeding moms are familiar with. They can be scary & overwhelming, particularly at the beginning of your breastfeeding journey, but can pop up throughout the duration of time that you are breastfeeding - mainly when significant changes are happening in your life, including night weaning & complete weaning. To further complicate things, there has been a fundamental shift in the way that science and leading lactation organizations and experts understand these conditions - this has resulted in the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine completely overhauling their Mastitis Proctol.  This means that the approach both lactating people & those who support them take when addressing engorgement, clogged ducts & mastitis has changed, or needs to change. This is relevant to those who are early in their breastfeeding experience, of course, but it's ALSO relevant to those who have been breastfeeding for a year or more.   You are more likely to be supporting friends & family members when they are encountering these things, and you are more likely to be using methods you were told to use when you face them yourself - but those methods are likely based on an outdated understanding of what engorgement, clogged ducts & mastitis are and could be creating MORE issues than they are solving. In this episode I break down: -> The big change -> Each condition in the Mastitis Spectrum of Conditions-> Support for general treatment & prevention -> The role stress plays (and what to do about it)   DISCLAIMER: This podcast is for educational purposes only and is not intended to be medical advice. Over the years I have taken many continuing education courses, leading me to finish my Bachelor of Science - with specialization in dental hygiene, at the University of Detroit Mercy in 2018. I have always been interested in how oral health effects overall health, and have taken many continuing education courses around this area. I have found that there are many people (including myself) with orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMD) and that people were just dealing with it. This brought me to do some research and asking myself - Why are people just dealing with the symptoms? There has to be negative long-term effects in having OMDs and there has to be a root cause to the OMD.During the shutdown of March of 2020 due to the global pandemic, I came across the field of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT). This was the first time I have heard of OMT and wondered why I havent heard of it before. Researching more about OMT, I knew I had to get certified, and completed my certification October 2020.During my studies of OMT I learned how to assess for signs and symptoms of orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs) and learned how to treat my own OMDs, realizing the impact it had on my overall health. "Sensory Overload", feeling ashamed of the condition of your house, constantly trying to "get organized" ... maybe it's just early motherhood, or maybe it's ADHD. As an LC working with breastfeeding moms from pregnancy through to preschool (and beyond!), I have been a little shocked to see how frequently clients come to me who have ADHD, suspect they have ADHD, or are surprised themselves how many boxes they tick off in a screening questionnaire.  There are so many ADHDer's in the "extended" breastfeeding community - but I don't see it being spoken about very much. As someone who was diagnosed with ADHD in adulthood myself, I knew it was important to open this conversation up in the breastfeeding space, and I knew that Katy Weber would be the perfect person to do it with. We talk about what the lived experience of an adult woman with ADHD is, different avenues for pursuing a diagnosis, and how to navigate the world once you have one. A little about Katy: " Diagnosed with ADHD at the age of 45, I've now made it my mission to help neurodivergent women learn to love their brains! I've spent the last 7 years coaching women to change their mindset and reframe their self-concept so they can finally recognize and lean into their gifts and abilities.I'm an author & public speaker, as well as a certified holistic health coach (INHC) and a certified yoga instructor (200 hr RYT). 16: Your Boob-Addicted Toddler And the Toddler Breastfeeding Stress Cycle

FREE Instant Access Workshop: Steal my Essential Roadmap to Toddler Wean, Tandem Feed & Extended Breastfeed (without feeling like a human fidget toy, or pushing your kiddo away.)Your toddler's boob addiction is actually a *GOOD* thing - AND there is a really good reason why it drives you nuts. Your toddler is still waking frequently at night to breastfeed.  You can't leave them with anyone without an *epic* meltdown. You are embarrassed to take them to the park because of the amount of shirt-pulling that is likely to occur, and it seems everyone around you thinks you should have had this figured out already. In our culture, all of those things are pretty “strange” for a toddler to be doing.  Because it's strange, our brains immediately go to “bad”.   Psychologically, we want to be like our peers. Practically, the standards we are used to measuring our child against (milestones, growth charts, etc.) are based on averages. “Kids that fall outside of the norm have something wrong with them” is an unconscious belief that is easy to develop.  Your toddler is addicted to your breast, and your only options are tough love or toughing it out. Or so you perceive.... But here is what your unconscious brain misses - it's not your child with the problem.  It's the culture. Now, I know that doesn't seem to leave a lot of hope. You're thinking: “I can't change the culture, Jenna.  Am I supposed to surrender to this chaos and hope that I survive until my child magically stops being a boob-monster?” I promise you, there is an alternative to the “tough-love/toughing-it-out” conundrum.  You don't have to force your child to do anything they aren't ready for, *and* you don't have to wait until they decide they are no longer going to scream “BOOB” as they dig their hands into your bra at your in-law's thanksgiving table. (No?  Just me?)Despite what others around you might say, your child still being “addicted” to breastfeeding is a good thing. Have you ever worried that boundaries around breastfeeding might be wrong or inappropriate? It can feel like you are caught between 2 worlds: One where sleep training is the norm, and breastfeeding beyond 6 or 12 months is said to be "more for the mom than the baby" And another where "surrendering" to your child's needs is the ONLY way to parent, and refusing a feed for any reason is inherently problematic. But what if there is a third option? In this bonus episode, I sit down with my friend and colleague, Samantha Radford to talk about this nuanced subject with grace, humility, and humor. Want to learn more from me?
