In this episode we answer emails from Camille and Jeff. We discuss how 72(t) and asset swaps enable early IRA access, where to place managed futures and treasuries for taxes, practical cash options at IBKR and ultra-short term ETFs, designing a mix for higher safe withdrawal rates, when to ratchet spending and when to hold flat, and tracking mandatory versus discretionary spending, among other things. And THEN we our go through our weekly portfolio reviews of the eight sample portfolios you can find at Portfolios | Risk Parity Radio.Additional Links:Father McKenna Center Donation Page: Donate - Father McKenna CenterHow To Do An Asset Swap Video from Risk Parity Chronicles: How to Do an Asset SwapFI Tax Guy Post on 72(t): Retire on 72(t) Payments – The FI Tax GuyWhite Coat Investor Podcast with Sean Mullaney: Managing Taxes in Retirement with Sean Mullaney | White Coat InvestorTax Planning Book: Amazon.com: Tax Planning To and Through Early Retirement: 9798999841599: Garrett, Cody, Mullaney, Sean: BooksUltra-short ETFs for Parking Excess Cash: Ultra Short-Term ETF ListPortfolio Charts Descriptions of Variable Withdrawal Strategies: Retirement Spending – Portfolio ChartsBreathless Unedited AI-Bot Summary:What if your IRA isn't a locked box until 59½? We dig into the real-world playbook for early access and smarter withdrawals, showing how 72(t) and asset swaps let you fund life now without wrecking your allocation or triggering penalties. Along the way, we answer donor questions on where to park managed futures when tax-advantaged space is tight, how to rebalance when bonds live behind the IRA wall, and the cleanest ways to earn yield on cash at Interactive Brokers with short-term ETFs like SGOV, BIL, and JPST. We also touch on BOXX for high earners and ask our Canadian friends to weigh in on legacy RRSP headaches. From there, we map a durable withdrawal framework: blend growth and value equities, hold intermediate and long treasuries for ballast, and add diversifiers like gold and trend to raise your safe withdrawal rate. If pensions and Social Security cover the essentials, a 5% withdrawal from a risk-balanced mix can still thrive over 30 years, especially when you limit spending increases to 1% instead of full CPI. For raises, we compare floor-and-ceiling rules to ratchets so you can lock in gains after meaningful portfolio advances, yet stay flexible when markets wobble. To ground it all, we run through market movers—growth stocks buzzing, gold shining, bonds steadying—and share performance across our sample portfolios, from classic Golden Butterfly to leveraged variants. Takeaways are simple and usable: your access is wider than you think, tax location is a spectrum not a slogan, and the best spending rule is the one that fits your life. In this episode we answer emails from Roman, Andrew and Iain. We discuss the plusses and minuses of leverage, volatility drag, and how leverage interacts with diversification and withdrawals, general observation on tax optimization via account buckets, small cap value index funds and Avantis/DFA merits, and modelling annuities versus mandatory versus discretionary spending in retirement.LInks:Father McKenna Center Donation Page: Donate - Father McKenna CenterBen Felix Leverage Video: Investing With Leverage (Borrowing to Invest, Leveraged ETFs)Leveraged ETFs Paper: Double-Digit Numerics - Articles - The Big Myth about Leveraged ETFsOptimized Portfolios Article/Website: How To Beat the Market Using Leverage and Index InvestingJim Sandidge Chaos Theory Applied to Drawdowns: RMJ081-ChaosAndRetirementSecurity.pdf"Buffet's Alpha" Paper: Full article: Buffett's AlphaNew Tax Planning In Early Retirement Book: Amazon.com: Tax Planning To and Through Early Retirement: 9798999841599: Garrett, Cody, Mullaney, Sean: BooksMerriman Best IN Class ETF Selections: Best ETFs 2025 | Merriman Financial Education FoundationBreathless Unedited AI-Bot Summary:Ever wonder why leverage looks brilliant during bull markets but feels brutal the moment you start withdrawing cash? We break down the promise and pitfalls of adding leverage to diversified, risk parity-style portfolios, then show how the math of volatility drag and sequence risk can quietly erode safe withdrawal rates. It's an honest tour of what works in accumulation, what breaks in retirement, and how to engineer a calmer path without surrendering all upside. We start with the straight talk: leverage and concentration are the two proven routes to outperformance, but only one of them can be paired safely with broad diversification. From hedge fund history to the “Aggressive 50/50” experiment, you'll hear why high-octane blends can top the charts and then stall after deep losses, especially when distributions force selling at the worst times. We contrast that with return stacking and measured leverage, which aim for equity-like returns with better risk control, and we share practical tools—rebalancing discipline, cash buffers, and dynamic spending bands—to keep a drawdown portfolio intact.Taxes matter just as much as tickers. We walk through Roth vs traditional contributions, why present marginal rates and future flexibility drive the choice, and how to place bonds smartly across tax buckets. On the equity side, we revisit small cap value: why classic S&P 600 value exposure is solid, and how AVUV and DFA's profitability filters can sharpen the factor without turning it into active guesswork. Then we turn to spending: build the plan around real expenses, not theoretical annuities. Set a durable floor for essentials, keep a flexible layer for the fun stuff, and consider partial annuitization later in life if longevity and peace of mind are worth the trade.Support the show

Mike Mullaney might not be a household name, but if you follow NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle drag racing, you've likely seen his world-class work, albeit briefly as it flashes past the grandstands en route to a sub-7-second pass. Mullaney designs and builds chassis for “Flyin'” Ryan Oehler, who has already pocketed not one, but two “Wallys,” professional straight-line competition's top honor. An accomplished drag racer himself, the 35-year-old husband and father of two got his start a decade ago with Vance & Hines Motorsports. “I knew I wanted to be a fabricator,” says Mullaney, “but I had never turned on a TIG welder. I had never turned on a lathe. I had never turned on a milling machine. Matt Hines, Andrew Hines, and Eddie Krawiec taught me a lot of what I know today.”When COVID led to staff reductions at V&H, Mullaney struck out on his own, forming Mullaney Cycle Works. Before he cuts metal, Mullaney creates the entire frame in CAD. Why? One, he doesn't want to waste material. Two, he needs to know exactly where everything goes, down to the millimeter. Career highlight? That's easy: Oehler's 200.77-mph pass this past May at Route 66 Raceway. Episode 3159: Sean Mullaney offers a compelling defense of the FIRE movement by reframing it not as a claim to credit or privilege, but as a tool for improving financial outcomes through intentional decision-making. Acknowledging the role of luck, he argues that FIRE equips individuals with a framework to optimize their financial lives regardless of their starting point, making better choices more likely to lead to better luck. Read along with the original article(s) here: https://fitaxguy.com/2020/12/ Quotes to ponder: "Luck and choices are not entirely unrelated. The better financial choices you make, the more likely it is you will have good financial outcomes and enjoy better luck along the way." "Financial literacy without a framework and goals is sort of like teaching algebra in high school. There's nothing wrong with it, but how much did algebra affect your adult life?" "The point of the Financial Independence movement is not to 'deserve' financial success. It's Sunday, which means...it's recap time here on the Retirement Quick Tips Podcast. The theme this week was:Year-End Tax Planning Tips with Sean Mullaney, The FI Tax Guy I really enjoyed talking with Sean and getting his perspective on year-end tax planning considerations for investors. The most important takeaway from this week is that it's always important in the last few weeks of the year to take a look at your income and tax situation and decide if there is anything else you could or should be doing to help with keeping your taxes lower in the current year, or in the case of the Roth conversion, looking ahead to future years to lower your taxes down the road. The time to do this is now…before the distraction of the holidays pushes these planning tips to the wayside. Better yet, if you have a tax advisor, now is a great time to connect with them, be proactive, and ask them specifically about the tax savings strategies that appeal to you - get their opinion on which ones make the most sense in your situation and Tomorrow, 10 Money Tips From A 10 Year Old. My daughter Keegan has been eager to get on the podcast, and she's a very outgoing and chatty girl, so she has a lot to say about a great many things - even money. Children can be so wise, and they see things from an entirely different perspective than we can as adults. They're free from many of the money challenges that plague adults because of experiences, upbringing, hard knocks and successes. So next week, you'll hear her unfiltered perspective on money and life. Thank you so much for listening this week! If you're enjoying the podcast, please share the show! Patrick Rieger emailed some photos: "Hi Marc, I feel like I have been slacking this summer sending you pictures after having sent so many. Celtic Pittsburgh hasn't been doing much the past few months though we do have plans in the works for an event in October. Meanwhile, the renaissance festival season for my family and I started when we attended the Great Lakes Medieval faire the weekend of July 27 and 28. It was a great weekend, and we needed time away from the daily routine. With life so busy for everyone we hardly see friends anymore, and this was a chance to see many of them. We were happy to find that our friend Captain John Stout, aka Richard Brentar, has returned to Great Lakes after having been absent for a few years. I'm not sure what I enjoy more, his music or his stories, he always has lots of great stories to tell. We also saw the Jackdaws, Celtic Mayhem, and Michael Manderen. Sadly we didn't make the shows of Menagerie Music this year but we did manage to catch up with Lisa from that duo. My family and I plus a couple of friends went to see John McCann and Hamish at Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle in Pittsburgh on August 3. These two are a lot of fun and have great energy, and get the place jumping. I have seen them for 15 years, starting when they were part of the Corned Beef & Curry Band. Sadly that band broke up when one of the three decided to explore other musical paths. I'll be sending more pictures of Celtic musicians come September after trips to two more ren faires. Until then, slainte!" Cheryl Arvio emailed some photos: "Hi Marc, Sorry these photos aren't better, but this is Socks in the Frying Pan from Friday night's show at the Irish American Heritage Center in Chicago. Brilliant, as they always are! Bummed that they are not playing Milwaukee Irish Fest this year, but happy we got to see them (and pick up their new CD) in our hometown. Best,"
"The pleasure of being a coach is you get to bear witness to the process of what goes on behind-the-scenes. The fans only get to see what people do for a performance, but you get to know what's actually going on, the ups and downs... It makes those great moments mean even more." NAZ Elite's Head Coach Jack Mullaney joins us live in New York to reflect on his first year with the team. Jack shares what he loves most about coaching, his philosophy, what the transition was like going from coaching at the college level to pro level, and what's ahead for the team. Rene St.Aubin emailed: "When is your next trip to Ireland to get the feel of music and culture" Robin MacDonald emailed from Wolf Creek, OR: "Hello Marc, I have been listening to your podcast, Irish & Celtic Music, on Amazon Prime. However just within the last few weeks it has completely disappeared! It will not even come up on a search, which is crazy because your music CDs do. How odd. Did you get some sort of notification from Amazon Prime Music that your podcast was no longer going to be available? I will have to figure out a new way to listen to it and I will! I just enjoyed the convenience as I am not able to stream music much at work (bandwidth) but Amazon Prime Music seemed to always work. Best Regards," Robin followed that up with: "Hello Marc, Enjoy your trip! Thanks for getting back to me and for the link. There's good news though, your Celtic Christmas podcasts are still available on Amazon Prime! Love it always, any time of the year. " Patrick Rieger emailed some photos: "Hi Marc, My family and I have been busy the past month with a stop at our favorite pub and two renaissance festivals, so I'll be sending a few emails about the incredible musicians we enjoyed. On August 24, we went to Mullaney's Harp & Fiddle to see John McCann and Hamish, and an hour after they started everyone, including John and Hamish, got a surprise: the third member of the Corned Beef and Curry Band dropped in, Bob Banerjee. Bob is the most incredible fiddle player I have ever seen, and he has an endless number of bad jokes. He is the curry in the band's name, having been born in India. So for a few hours, this great band was back together. Irish musician Mark Guiser was in the audience that night, and was invited onto the stage for a few songs. Two wedding parties then dropped in for some post - reception fun. The energy, excitement and fun hadn't been that high at the Harp in a long time, and my wife and I only left because our son needed to get to bed. In one photo is The Corned Beef & Curry Band, from left to right, John McCann, Bob Banerjee, and Hamish, In the other, Mark Guiser and Bob. They were playing Hallelujah with Mark singing."

He also talks about his career in transportation, what a chief transformation officer does and truCurrent's role in electrifying fleets. He also shares why he thinks its importance to be open to new ideas and the importance of self-forgiveness during transformative times.
Matthew Mullaney was only 21 when he left Massachusetts to study abroad in Italy. But just a few weeks after his arrival, on January 31st 2003, Matthew left an Irish pub and disappeared without a trace. His disappearance triggered an international search across Europe, with several unconfirmed sightings reported until around 2006. After that, the trail went cold. Many theories have emerged about what might have happened to Matthew, but as of today, he remains missing. His case continues to be one of the most mysterious disappearances involving Americans abroad. In this episode of the show, I speak with Dr. Thomas Mullaney about his new book, The Chinese Computer. In the book, Dr. Mullaney outlines the history and evolution of Chinese language computing technology, and explores how the technology of the QWERTY keyboard changed this history of computing. We talk about how the structure of language has shaped the history of digital technologies, and Dr. Mullaney explains how China and the non-Western world—because of the “hypographic” technologies they had to invent in order to join the personal computing revolution— helps us understand the relationship between the human mind and the technologies it creates. Thomas S. Mullaney is Professor of History and Professor of East Asian Languages and Cultures, by courtesy, at Stanford University. He is also the Kluge Chair in Technology and Society at the Library of Congress, and a Guggenheim Fellow. He is the author or lead editor of 7 books, including The Chinese Typewriter (winner of the Fairbank prize), Your Computer is on Fire, Coming to Terms with the Nation: Ethnic Classification in Modern China, and The Chinese Computer—the first comprehensive history of Chinese-language computing. His writings have appeared in the Journal of Asian Studies, Technology & Culture, Aeon, Foreign Affairs, and Foreign Policy, and his work has been featured in the LA Times, The Atlantic, the BBC, and in invited lectures at Google, Microsoft, Adobe, and more. He holds a PhD from Columbia University.

For this special episode, we team up with Mark from the Shipwrecked & Comatose podcast to chat all things Lloyd Mullaney, who of course was played by Red Dwarf star Craig Charles. With Mark never having watched an episode of Corrie before save for a handful of famous Lloyd clips, it was a lot of fun chatting about the character and how he was similar to - and different from - Dave Lister. Our discussion also covers some of Lloyd's biggest moments, the issues raised by stories such as Paul Kershaw's racist remarks, and what Mark found most surprising about his first experience watching our favourite soap. If you're a fan of Red Dwarf, you can listen to Shipwrecked & Comatose at the link below: https://pod.link/1514570118

Patrick Rieger sent Some More Irish Pictures: "Hello Marc, A few more photos to share. First up, a few of Terry Griffith, the last few times he was on a stage with an in - person audience at Mullaney's Harp and Fiddle. One is from the 2020 fundraiser for the Pittsburgh Saint Patrick's Day Parade on February 13, 2020, and another is from his gig on February 28, 2020. Within a few weeks, the words Covid and Coronavirus quickly became part of our daily vocabulary, and the shows came to an end for a couple of years. On June 4, 2022, we had a retirement party for Terry. The best part of the night is when he strapped on a guitar and led the packed pub in A Health to the Company. There were tears and cheers for him throughout the evening, but most came during that special song. The last photo is from tonight, January 27, 2024. John McCann on acoustic guitar and Hamish on percussion packed the Harp & Fiddle. Lots of great music and an interactive audience.”

Don't believe long-term tax planning is crucial? Here's a new way to think about it: picture having a slow leak in one of your tires. Well if you just noticed your tire looking a bit flat, then of course head to Costco for some free air, get that tire back up to pressure, and move on with your day – it's a quick and effective short-term solution. But also keep in mind that you'll have to eventually figure out a permanent solution, whether it's a plug or a new tire that'll last you for years. You could keep kicking the can down the road and opt for the quick top-off, but eventually that shortsighted fix will cost you more in wasted time than addressing the problem at hand properly. Similarly, if you're only looking for ways that you can pay as little tax as possible for this year alone, then you're missing the forest for the trees. We're pumped to be talking with our friend Sean Mullaney about minimizing tax liabilities on the podcast today. Sean, a fiduciary financial advisor who writes at FITaxGuy.com, will be delving into both year-end moves and longer-term tax strategies, discussing when he prefers traditional over Roth, upcoming changes to 401k accounts, the best retirement accounts for solopreneurs, and much more!
