Dean Knuth was the longstanding Senior Director of Handicapping, GHIN and Green Section Administration at the USGA, and was the prime developer of the USGA's obstacle-based course rating system as well as the slope rating system (hence his nickname "The Pope of Slope"). We talk with Dean about all of his accomplishments at the USGA, as well as his life in golf beyond the USGA.
723: On January 1, 2020 the World Handicap System went into effect in the US along with several other countries around the world. In the US, this new system replaces the old USGA GHIN. Our guest is Dean Knuth, who was a charter member of the USGA Handicap Research Team and also created the USGA Course Rating System in 1976, then later the Slope Rating System to make handicaps more reliable and portable. Hence his nickname “The Pope of Slope”. He’s not a fan of the new WHS nor how it was implemented. He joins us to break it down. He also discusses the latest development in his latest venture as the co-founder and creator of the High Heat 257+ Drivers, Fairway Woods, and Hybrids designed so that amateur golfers can hit longer and straiter shots. Here’s an article that explains features of the new WGS. https://www.golfdigest.com/story/five-keys-to-the-new-world-handicap-system And here’s what Dean had to say in a GolfDigest followup. https://www.golfdigest.com/story/voices-the-flaw-in-the-new-world-handicap-system-dean-knuth Golf Smarter listeners get 20% off the new High Heat 257+ Turf Glider Sold model that will be introduced at the PGA Merchandise Show next week. The technology utilized is called the 3 Trampoline effect that is now legal according to USGA specs. The wild thing is that these High Heat 257+ are the ONLY clubs on the market with this adjustment specifically for mid-high handicap golfers. 637: Dean Knuth, the Pope of Slope, first introduced us to his retirement project back in 2016. Now, the High Heat Drivers, Fairway Woods, and Hybrids just got hotter! In 2016 the USGA permitted a conforming golf face to have a much higher “trampoline” effect, known as CT, on the toe and heel of the club face so that you don’t lose any distance or accuracy with mishits. 552: Bobby Clampett was the Low Amateur at the 1979 US Open and the 1980 Masters. He played on the PGA Tour and the Champions Tour in addition to being a network golf announcer/commentator. After playing with over 1,000 amateurs at more than 220 Pro-Ams he noticed something about their divots that separates high handicappers from Tour players. “...the Touring pros had a swing bottom approximately 4 inches in front of the center of the golf ball. For every inch amateurs were behind that 4 inches, equated to, on average, 4 strokes per inch!" In this week’s episode Bobby talks with host Fred Greene about his history, greatest influences, the Golfing Machine, and his effective method of instruction called The Impact Zone. Bobby is going to be giving a “Golfing In The Zone Clinic” at Michael Murphy’s Golf In The Kingdom Marathon charity event on September 11-12, 2016 at Peacock Gap in San Rafael, CA. 550 Premium: There are at least five different type of the Yips in golf. Full Swing, Chipping, Pitching, Bunker, and the least common but most talked about: Putting. Our guest is one of our all-time favorite golf instructors who actually specializes in eliminating the yips, Jim Waldron of the Balance Point Golf Schools. According to Jim, there are three contributing factors to the yips. Mental. Emotional. Physical (mechanics). “By definition, the yips (flinching) are unconscious. No one tries to get the yips.” Jim also touches on the contributing factors, examples, and devising a program that will eliminate them and “Flinch-Proof Your Game”, and curing a scratch golfer who’s yips got so bad, he handicap went up to a 12.
